I’m gonna be honest, I am in the bowling alley right now and I couldn’t bowl at all, I watched this video in my seat and stepped up and got a strike. Thank you so much
I have been watching these tips for a few weeks as im now getting into bowling with friends. I went from 95 to 130 to 160 average quickly. I just bowled my first ever game over 200 with a score of 259 (which im sure was mostly luck) but these videos have really helped
I did this today, I was losing to my friends and was behind 20 points, I searched up how to bowl on TH-cam right on the spot and watched this video. I got 3 straight strikes and got the dub 🤤
Tip #4. Wow! Who knew the swing, release and hook you can get just by having great fundamentals and letting the rock do the work would look so effortless! I mean, I've been massing with some E.J. Tackett type releases like crazy and no wonder I was all over the shop!
Fuggin’ liked this. I’m literally in Japan about to go bowling for the second time this week, and I’m in the living room practicing on the floor slipping and sliding and falling, and once I saw this, it made so much more sense 😮💨😮💨
Great video! Packs a lot of good stuff into five minutes. I am a fairly new silver coach, and I always tell my students the ball should hold on to your hand, and the ball should swing your arm, not the other way around. Huge believer in tight thumb holes...I preach using tape to achieve that perfect snugness. If I were to add one more tip, it would be that you don’t have to overpower a typical house shot...less effort, less muscle, and more consistency is often the key to success.
A great example of what you said on that last point is that every bowler knows how easy it is to strike on that twelve frame fill ball. After you've made your spare in the 10th frame, you tend to relax and just let the next ball roll. On that last ball you often get the strike that you might have been struggling to get all game long. That's because you stopped trying to overpower the shot. Less is more.
Ironfangzu Soooo true, I have had a problem with doing this for years and it’s so hard to do once you develop a bad habit for so long. Great example for me is the spare shot...I’m always more relaxed thus the ball comes off my hand like butter and everything just “works”.
Watched your vid before going bowling with the fam. Can’t even remember the last time I bowled. Shot a 118 even with a 0 in the first frame. Thanks I just followed your advice

Awesome! We backed off from recreational bowling due to our areas pandemic increase…. Hoping to be back on the lanes soon…. Initially didn’t care to get “good”, but always trying to get a little better! 😉 Now, after seeing just 2 short tutorials, I am eager to get both better and good! Going to search your channel for something about ball weight! Thanks so much!!
I was at empire in Webster and I watched this video and it helped me do better than my last 5 games (I did 6 games). This video is the most helpful thing that I ever watched.
Thank you for the tips! Could you help explain the footwork during the bowling, and how your right leg ends up cross behind the left foot like that? You move in leading with your left shoulder, then at the point of delivery the weight is all on the left foot as you face the lane square on, but how does that right foot cross over? I think many beginners like myself have problems with the actual bowling action, and the right footwork will help us bowl with better control, and as you say, let the ball swing the arm!
Coach Shady and Mike! Great content, love this segment and always want more! Good Stuff here ✊🏽👍🏽✌🏽😊✌🏽👌🏽✊🏽 can’t wait to apply this back on the lanes...
My league average was at 197 two years ago and now it is 171.. I am struggling and I have no clue. Extremely Frustrating. I watched this video Wednesday and wrote down the steps. I bowled Wednesday night and NO LIE, first game was a 289. Missed a 300 in the 10th frame. 225, and 182 for a 696. I never comment, but I had to, to this video. Thank you!
I'd suggest you get your (good) pro shop person to open up your thumb hole. Then you fine tune snugness with the type of bowling tape that gives you that just right tightness
At least for me , first of all having a tighter thumb has been fantastic , I used to have the hole let out a bunch and then use tape but I don't have that problem anymore
But for me with a very elliptical thumb , having it beveled out and tight up and down against my PIP joint keeps me from both laboring and getting stuck. It's a little fine tuning I go through with every slug in every ball but it's worth it.
Absolutely Loved it. By eye, your free practice swing looks push -pulled. Show off that sweet swing you have. You remind me so much of my mentor, Dick Ritger. Great work.
I have to thank you very much, I watched this video just over an hour ago and I got 118 from a 50 a couple months ago. This is a great guide would recommend to new bowlers. 👌
I suck at bowling. After going out three times, I improved enough to get 100~ points. I'm going to test out these techniques to see if I can do better.
Thank you much appreciated, I like to see folks improve and enjoy the game, it’s a great game and we all strive to get better, thankfully the equipment and technology of today helps us do that more than ever. Just remember that lessons are only the foundation to improve your game, you must practice what you’re taught and develop good practice habits. In other words, make your practice productive. Practice with someone who can critique you constructively. Don’t try to learn it all in one practice session, practice different things at different times, whether that be footwork, timing, balance, or arm swing just to name a few, focus on one or 2 things at a time. Practice your form at home, in front of a mirror, you’d be amazed at what you can learn by doing simple things and looking at yourself. There are ball drills you can do at home and You Tube has some videos on that…don’t focus so much on your score when you practice, it’s more important to know that you are hitting your target consistently and picking up those spares than achieving scores that don’t count…Anyone can strike but the secret to improving your game is your ability to make spares on a consistent basis. You do that and I guarantee you will see your average climb. Best of luck!

If someone could fix how expensive and inaccessible bowling is in the UK that would be great. It was fine about 15 years ago but it’s so expensive and the lanes are so poor now it’s a disgrace.
I started bowling again since now everything is opened back back up and I'm bowling 202 216 and 241 and the ball is hooking really nice but in fall they change the oil pattern and it's so oily my bowling ball doesn't hook at all do I need to buy another ball for oily conditions?
I’m having trouble with my ball getting stuck to my hand. I bought a brand new IQ , hand it drilled to my span .. hand the grips changed to I believe the largest available (in the pro shop) but when I release it it feel like it sticks to my thumb and sometimes even my fingers.. I notice in the video you mention having a tight thumb hole.. could this just be me having a improper release?
Yeah, none of these are "hacks", but the most basic fundamentals of bowling. ball fit and grip, proper preparation, arm swing, release, and then follow through. It really can't get more basic than that.
I will take this info has much as i can, I have gotten a invite a few hrs ago and haven't gone bowling in 9 years and didn't know even then we will see how it goes.
How tight is the thumb hole suppose to be? My first ball I had drilled made my thumb swell. I had to keep my thumb on ice during league so it wouldn't swell.
A proper fitting ball shouldn't make your thumb swell excessively. I'd suggest going to a reputable pro shop\ in your area and having your fit checked. The span and pitches of the holes are also a factor in the fit in addition to the actual hole sizes. Thanks for watching and good luck!
