This is the first time I have listened to an interview with Nancy and I am blow. Away by how beautiful, humble, smart with no ego lady she was. I am going to educate myself more about her life and music. What I have heard is wonderful. A lady way ahead of her time.
I met year back in the 90s. She was performing at Chene Park in Detroit and getting ready to go on stage. It was just me and her. I was the Office Assistant at that time and met SO many stars but she stood out to me. She was tall, classy and beautiful. As an aspiring singer at that time, I asked her about her life and what made her want to be a singer. She walked over to me and proceeded to kneel down to talk to me next to my desk and I was like "OH NO Mrs. Wilson, please don't kneel down, you have on all white!!" She said, "Girl, please its just a pants suit" LOL! We talked for over 10 mins. When we were done, she and I stood up and she gave me a hug and wished me well in my music career. Best memory, next to meeting Phyllis Hyman of my life. I love her voice and her sound!! She will be missed.
As a man I understand what she is talking about because I am an instrumentalist and the love for playing and singing is different than being in the show business side
My uncle Rusty Bryant gave Ms Wilson her start back in the day. She and my mother sang with his orchestra a lot before his career got started. My mother was Barbara McCarroll. He once told the story of Ms Wilson wanting to go with his band to California, but there wasn’t any room in the van with all of the equipment. She was upset. About half way through the trip they kept hearing noises in the back of the van. He pulled over to see what it was and discovered that Nancy had hid behind the drums. So they had to take her with them. The rest is history.
Wow. Always loved her voice but what an amazing woman all around. So smart so young! Self aware, focused and nobody's fool. A life well grounded and well lived. Such an inspiration!
I love her story....her beginning and her rise to stardom. I have been a huge fan and admirer of Ms. Wilson for years. I will always miss her. May she R.I.P.
I’m a fan of NW, and this guy is an absolutely amazing interviewer! He followed the conversation and based his questions on the path of the conversation. Just awesome!
This is the best interview of Nancy Wilson period. It's like sitting down and listening to an old friend speak their truth. Very insightful talk. She fills in a lot of the blanks and connects a lot of dots here. Excellent interview by an excellent interviewer.
To be so lucky to have this kind of business insight and personal introspection thereby making choices that are crafted in your best interest not the in the interest and greed of others. Wow and the importance of family. She knew what she wanted and crafted her life in that direction. A classic Woman's woman.
Nancy commanded any stage whether she was singing or speaking. Fantastic interview! I had always heard she never had a gold or platinum album. Such a shame. People, esp our black people, were always more than willing to help filth be certified gold and platinum but they could not support Nancy in the same way.
I've admired her and loved her singing for a long time (and had something of a crush on her, to be absolutely honest), but the admiration just amplified exponentially after seeing this. RIP Miss Nancy.
A jewel and so happy I had the opportunity to grow up listening to her music. Appreciate this interview and her knowledge. She was such a class act. rip🌹
At least now we know why she disappeared from the scene for a while. I always thought that it was due to the change of times and how the demand for jazz performers like Nancy began to shrink during the mid seventies. Her show was great but disco music ruined it for many..Jazz fusion was growing yet Nancy survived because she understood early the value of a good life! RiP
EVEN NOW IN 2021 I"M LISTENING. I STILL CAN'T PHANTHOM NANCY IS GONE. WHEN. WHERE, WHO SAID SO! MY DEAR NANCY I'M STILL IN YOUR AUDIENCE LISTENING. I thank God for my dear mother reminiscing with my siblings and I of her "gay"(happy, y'all) days going to see the big bands and Nate King Cole, Lena Horne, and many others in New York City while visiting and escorted by her older sister and boyfriend. Thank you Mom and thank you Nancy. You 2 would have loved each other.
i think the host just assumed that everyone wants to be a hollywood star and/or be in "show business" and it took a couple minutes for him and her to sort out that she really wasn't all that interested in it and didn't think it was all it was cracked up to be. ...a very, very mature POV for a teenager to have at that time....or any time for that matter. :)
To the American Black Journal, the Interview with Mr. Ed Gordon 'BET' personal Diary. I believe the interview was in 1994. To the Wilson Family your your Mother has Godly wisdom, especially when it comes to Ms Wilson ❤️ Love for her Family . Being w them and communicating w her Children, and the same go's for the hold world. We do know N. Wilson is a very Humble Woman and she Love the Lord, Christ Jesus... 😊 Min. T.L.Wellington to her Family
She talking my language because Me as a musician had to struggle with the same choices she is talking about. You can become so much an entertainer than you can’t relate to you own family anymore. That’s why I quit show business.
She says it right. It's up to the people with intelligent tastes to lift her to gold. She "wants it" not for her ego but for the legacy that is her gift to posterity. Like Ahmad Jamal she never had that big mega hit to match the cry from the soul, the wail that is the joy born out of misery to create the uplift of overpowering, healing music.
unfortunately, being happy, grateful, generous, giving is as inevitable as one's height or hair color. it's not a learned trait. it's inherited from on'e's parents. it's not learned. it's a comforting thought that it can be taught though. :)

@@ABCDuwachuithat's what I wanted to know! 😊
The research that was done with Mrs. N.W. was exceptional. Mrs. N.W. stood her ground. Now I understand.

Lovely lady. And she was a lady! Had her lps way back, before CD's. Yes, she was a gift from God. Always loved her. ❤❤❤

Such a classy self-assured QUEEN!! One of my favorite artistes.

She's simply a joy and delight to look at, and listen to. ❤
What an astounding woman. So forthright with a poise that is truly unique.
It's called "class," an almost non-existent quality these days.
@@sudelaine8653, you got that right. 👍🏾
Song stylist is a term I have yet to come across in my short 26 years but I absolutely love it.
There will NEVER, EVER, EVER be another! Thank You so much for sharing this! This. Lady. Here. Grace. Poise. Style. Talent. IN SPADES!

As far as I'm concerned, Nancy, YOU were the gold in all of your music!! And blessed are we to still be able to listen to your heart and soul!
Wow. Always loved her voice but what an amazing woman all around. So smart so young! Self aware, focused and nobody's fool. A life well grounded and well lived. Such an inspiration!

Such a grounded exemplary woman! So sad to see the Grammy winning, stardom-seeking "stars"(scars) of today.
