I’m using Active Aqua submersible pump AAPW800 and I’m doing the 1/2 go chiller with 3/4 connections. But when I open the pump to attach the strainer the pump inner thread is slightly smaller than 3/4”. Any thoughts? Thanks!
That was my concern with offering options. You will need to get a converter, the tip might be a 1/2" so you might need to order a 1/2" to 3/4' inch adapter or run it to home depot. If you can, send me a pic on IG @dmausjr
Did you ever figure out a solution to this? I’m having the same problem. The 3/4 is slightly too big. And the included piece that does screw in perfectly has a barb that is too big for my 3/4” hose. Super frustrating.
Loved the video and the clear, concise instructions for adding the various components. Do you have a suggestion for a cheaper alternative to the IB300? The Ice Barrel is out of my budget range at the moment, but I would like to use your 1/4 HP cold plunge kit with a more affordable tub/pod. Keep up the great work with the channel!
You got it! Super simple, all you need to do is fill the barrel up with water and look for water to enter into the strainer, if you dont see water, open up the hose to let teh air out. The goal is to make sure water is in the pump.
Hi David - Excuse me if this was already addressed; why is there a need to have a separate water pump, aside from the chiller? I've seen other chillers without external water pumps. Secondly, how do you sink up the water pump and the chiller from a power perspective or are the pump and chiller always plugged in and turned on?
Hey David, I got the 1/4 horsepower Amazon kit and 1 thing you would have to change is for the pump that was in the Amazon kit it’s afapate is 1/2 not a 3/4, everything else was right tho I just have to get a 1/2 to 3/4 adapter at lowes
What's the model of the Active Aqua pump you are using? Is it the 800GPH ? And what's the model of the chiller ? Is it the 1/2HP? That chiller is rated 800-1,600GPH, so you would be on the lower end of the specs.
I put in a UV green killing machine light in my plunge use hydrogen peroxide and water barrel stabilizer, do I need like a marine land water filter in my ice barrel too? I have this exact setup with strainer and all
Thank you for putting this together, great setup. I have been running for the last two months without issues but recently the filter just stops pumping water after a while which I assume is due to air build up. I primed it by filling the tubes with water and that seems to work for about a day and then the same happens again. Am I doing something wrong and is there a good solution for this? Thank you
You had two answers on how to add drain outlet to keep water from going on floor when draining. You recommended faucet splitter or a pvc tee. Not sure which one would be better and no clear about how to use the tee. The faucet splitter would have the pump and strainer at an angle when connecting. Possible to do a short video about this? Thanks
Love your videos! I know in your other videos you mentioned that there's a possibility that the inline pumps can burn out, I was wondering if you experienced that with an Active Aqua water pump or was it a different brand? If so, how long did it take for it to burn out?
Switched to Danner pumps, they are little beasts. Yes they could all theoretically burn out if they were on for a while with no water in the line. That is the main concern
Hi David. Thanks for this video as this is very thorough indeed. However, I've run into an issue where my 3/4" male adapter is not able to connect to the pump. I've tried numerous times and 2 unique 3/4" male adapters but to no avail. These same adapters have no issues connecting to the strainer on either end so I'm a bit lost here. I'm curious but I just checked my pump and it is the Style: 800 GPH model. Is it mandated I purchase the 1000 GPH model instead?
Ok just following up here but the 800gph pump has a 5/8" thread after noticing another hose fitting I was able to connect. I've submitted a return to Amazon and hoping the 1000gph pump model will have 3/4" female threading to fit the 3/4" male adapter.
Yes, thanks again @@DavidMausJr all squared away so now just wait for the barrel arrival tomorrow and the pump on Wednesday. I should be good to start cold plunging this week, thanks to your reviews
thanks so much for all the help! I ended up buying the 800 gpm pumps and the front cover had a 5/8 thread rather than a 3/4. Did this change since the video was made or should I have gotten the 1000 gpm pump?
I tighten the screw that connects the barrel to the filter too tight and now the tube is cracked inside the barrel and leaking. Anyone know where I can order a new part?
Hey David! Thanks for sharing your processes with us. I just followed the exact steps to install an active aqua chiller to my IB 300. Does the strainer get filled to the top when its facing up like that? Mine is only filling up just a little bit so I'm not sure if it's actually filtering the water. Thanks!
I purchased the pump you link to but the inside female end is 5/8, not 3/4. I am struggling to find a 5/8 to 3/4 coupling to connect the pump to the filter.
@@DavidMausJr Have everything setup properly, as in the video, though using 3/4 barb for slightly smaller hose (which I had in my old DIY and worked fine). Small leaks under intake from filter to pump, even though I have plumbers tape on each end. But my biggest concern is there is very little suction. The pump is trickling water through the chiller. My last DIY used a small pool pump and had plenty of power, but this pool pond pump feels weaker than it should be. At a loss, as I used to use a pond pump on my last one to drain water whenever I cleaned it out and it seemed to have more power/suction. At a loss here.
I found your Amazon DIY list for 3/4” setup!! That’s awesome. You mentioned an ozonator in the video. I saw the green water killer on the Amazon page, but not sure that’s it. Hoping to locate something next to the pump and chiller setup which will be about 15’ from the Barrel. Any recommendations for some type of inline sanitizer? Thanks, David!
David, I got the 800 pump and I'm using 3/4" tubing and everything. I got 2x 3/4" x 3/4" fittings to link the strainer and the pump together, but my 3/4" fitting won't fit in to the 800. It looks like I need 3/4" to 5/8"
Oh no! Yea the 800 might be a smaller hole. I use the 1100 and it comes with the right pieces. So sorry my friend. But you should be able to get that cheap on Amazon
Hi I just received my ice barrel three hundred, I bought a intex filter via Amazon. I’m a little confused with setting it up. I can be reached and I’m in south Florida. 😊
hi david , is i have the 1/2 hp chiller , will the 3/4 tubing will fit in the top part of the pump trough the chiller ? i think i heard you saying that the top tub attached to the pump is 1 inch ?
Let's say we have a week or 2 where the ambient temps outside are in the 40's. Can you use pump only to keep the water moving through the 'off chiller' Orr if we're plumbed through the chiller, it needs to be running? If it needs to be running, you would just shortcut the system with pump only flow during colder temps no through chiller, yeah?
Great video. Makes it really simple. I've seen in other videos that you thought 1/4hp chiller would be enough for the IB300. Anymore thoughts on that? I got my barrel and the chiller is next!
The male thread to male thread, where it connects to the pump keeps cracking and leaking water. Think it’s due to the weight of the pump not leaning on anything. This has been my second pump that’s cracked…
so you found that you didn't need any Teflon tape or o-rings on any of the fittings that you screw in that are from leaking or slightly dripping? also all fittings that were PVC like this for just hand tighten you didn't need tools to stop them from leaking etc.. I imagine over-tightening is worth cuz you could crack the plastic? thanks so much for your help and and videos
Thanks for the support and question. I didn’t use any tape, but it could help if needed. I also hand tighten almost everything, but I used a wrench a few times but not to over tighten, just to make it easier.
Will the 1/4hp chiller work fine for me? Trying to keep this as budget friendly as possible,I’m located in sw Florida so it gets hot but plan on setting it up in my garage
I think me and 10,000+ other people who have had their active aqua chillers outside in the elements since day one would say you are absolutely fine with them outside as they are. Obviously do so at your own risk... but Plunge used active aqua for years before making their own new chiller and they are all doing great outside. Active Aqua needs to make some changes to their recommendations
So that pump is a submersible pump, but you can use it out of the water, and it won't burn up? Also, does the 3/4 adapter come with the pump once you remove that filter cover on the pump? You went over that part kind of fast. Thanks brother :)
Important: All ports on the Ice Barrel 300 are 3/4 NPT (not GHT). Several of Dave’s kits include GHT threaded adapters that do not fit the Ice Barrel 300. Using those GHT adapters will result in damaging the threads on the Ice Barrel.
Thanks for the heads up. For reference, i agree with you however the pieces i have in the kits are exactly (after trial and error) what I am using and there are zero issues. I have updated all the kits for the 300 and they have both options. If you want to go with NPT to NPT exclusive, they are the brass options in the kits. Any questions, message me on IG: @dmausjr
Hi David, pinged you earlier on IG as well but speaking of 3/4 NPT to NPT, does Amazon have this in non-brass options? Thinking of removing the brass I've inserted now due to some leaking issues. Also, for the pump, I see a leak at the base of the barbed hose connector. This is the one that came with the pump. Should I purchase a different barbed hose connector for the pump that will fit my 3/4 inch hose? if so what is the thread connector size to the 1000gph pump @@DavidMausJr
Love your videos! So I put together the kit and cracked the lower threaded plug. How do you order parts from IceBarrel? I put in a support ticket and tried to use their chat feature on the site but no luck.
David, great video. Quick question. If I wanted to add a filter would that go in the place of the strainer? Or is that something that I would need to add to the system in addition to the strainer? If that is the case, where in the system would it be placed? Thanks for any guidance.
@@DavidMausJr thanks. And last question then I swear I’ll leave you alone. Although I live in Texas, it’s supposed to be down in single digits and my chiller is out side. You think that will be an issue or should I dc it and bring the chiller inside
Thanks for the video. I ordered my Ice Barrel 300 back in August but haven't received mine yet. In fact, I've tried contacting Ice Barrel multiple times through multiple channels to get an ETA and they won't answer me.
Oh man i am sorry about that! I know when i was at the HQ they were slammed with emails about shipping and they are a small team (currently building and growing). They were like "man i want to respond to each and every email about the shipping, but that would take hours and in that time i could also just process the shipping... dont want to make people mad but im going to just ship them their barrels." not word for word but i agreed. Its coming soon and i hope it comes sooner my friend.
Best review of ice plunges out there! Appreciate the play by play detail and discount code. I ended up going with an Ice Barrel 300 with ActiveAqua 1/4hp. I also used your 300 amazon kit products, I grabbed the 3/4 by 3/4 copper male connecters from your DIY kit on amazon but the copper fittings into the plastic recirculating pump seems like they do not tighten down securely enough for a water tight connection( I am still waiting on the ice barrel delivery but wanted to setup the pump and tubing. Should I just use plumbers tape and that should cover it? The kit does slightly differ from your video (video contains plastic fittings). Just an observation looking for clarification. Thanks!
Think a 1/2 HP paired with the 300 can hang for the stupid hot summers in Phoenix? Or is it best to go with more horses? It’ll be under the patio, but outside will still be a brisk 110°.
What do you think about the cold plunge … I know it is pricey but I am looking at the best options to add to my routine … thank you for all the content
David, thanks so much for all the info you provide. Your videos are crystal clear and your Amazon kits make things so easy! I'm going with the Active Aqua 1HP chiller and I have decided to install it in a waterproof vented deck box. I would like to get the deck box before the chiller arrives but I need to confirm what the vertical dimension is from base of the chiller to the highest point of the hose nipples on top so I can get a box that will accommodate. Can you tell me what that dimension is? I've tried finding it on the Active Aqua website and also through their customer service but I get different responses. I trust you to give me the correct answer. Thanks!
Just curious why you choose not to use a filter. I know the strainer sort of acts as a pre filter but every other set up I’ve seen has a filter as well. Thanks!
Glad you asked! The filters are just another monthly cost and they are going to get nasty. i use the Ice Barrel Stabilizer which works great plus i have a portable ozone machine i use in all my plunges about once a month. My water stays clean and clear without needing any extra stuff but people do go that route too and its great! I just like simple. The strainer keeps debris out of the pump and chiller and works just fine :)
Hi David. I am terrible at DIY projects. I bought the ice barrel 300 tub and a Nuvio recovery chiller (1/3 HP). I am struggling to figure out how to connect it. Can you help?
Does the chiller need to run constantly 24/7? I understand you can turn it off for the couple minutes you're in the tub. How long would something like a 1/4 hp chiller take to cool the water 20ish degrees? Thanks as always for the content!
I keep it on 24/7 but it only runs when it needs to chill the water back to set temp. Otherwise its just a pass through. That is a good test, from my experience in FL it doesnt take longer than about 5-6 hours. Basically I would fill up and turn on at night, by morning its cold. In 20 degrees it should take way less time, id leave the lid off in that temp and let it really cool down fast.
You said a “strainer.” Is that the filter? How long does the water stay clean? How often do I need to dump and refill with new water? Chlorine? I want to do this but I don’t know how long the water is going to stay clean and what to treat my water with.
The strainer filtered almost exactly what a 20 micron filter will, it doesn’t need replacing. Water will stay as clean as you keep it clean. People use chemicals but I tend to just use hydrogen peroxide and occasionally ozone. Water stays clean for Months.
Hey David, I saw Amazon has VEVOR Aquarium Chiller, 500 Gal 1892 L, 1.5 HP which is on sale for under $700, and it is a 1.5hp. Have you heard of anyone buying this over the Aqua? Since you can get a bigger unit for cheaper than the 1/2 hp Aqua. Thanks for your help!
Hi David, thank you for another amazing video and the detailed explanation! Would you be open to creating an Amazon page for the Ice Barrel 300 Chiller DIY Kit with 1/4HP Chiller that list all the exact parts needed? Would welcome purchasing all that's needed through your link!
Wow, if I'm being totally candid I didn't expect a reply (and certainly not this soon)! Thank you for considering and I (and I'm sure many others!) will keep an eye out to see if/when a new link is included in the video description! @@DavidMausJr
@@DavidMausJr Thank you for posting the complete parts list for the 1/4HP chiller kit - parts ordered! If I may ask two follow up questions: (1)PUMP SIZE: Is there any concern around the Active Aqua Submersible Water Pump being too forceful at 800 GPH since the tank is so small? I noticed that many whole system cold plunge manufactures use 400 GPH pumps (which is the min Active Aqua recommends with the 1/4HP chiller)? Would welcome any thoughts you may have in reply. (2) STRAINER CLEANING: How often do you recommend cleaning the strainer? Thanks again for any additional info you may be able to share.
I currently run the 1/4 with a 1300 GPH pump on the ModTub and its had no issues and what they use. Im sure you can get away with smaller but flow rate is the important variable for keeping the water cool in hot months Clean the strainer when it looks like it needs it or when you notice water flow is slowing down@@StevenJW-e5m
I really like the ice barrel 300, but I would like it even more if it had 1 in threaded holes instead of the 3/4 in. It seems like you will be putting a strain on the chiller if you opt for a chiller that has 1 in intake outlet.
@@DavidMausJr hey thanks for replying. Even with the adapter, you're still shrinking the hole to 3/4-in. Still hoping they upgrade to a one inch hole and let people buy adapters to get it down to 3/4-in if they want, haha Thanks for the great work by the way on your channel. Excellent coverage of products from all angles.
If there is any advice I can give to anyone wanting to do this DIY, please dont go with any less than the 1000 gph pump. The fittings are all different on the smaller ones.
My 300 came with a faucet and I'm having a hard time removing it so i can use the 3/4 adapter to connect to the rest of the setup. I'm hoping the faucet can be removed somehow
It should just unscrew. It might be on tight. Or yes you can use everything and just connect to that hose bib it will just angle down and might not work perfect. Play with it and let me know. Feel free to message me on IG @dmausjr and i will help you through it
I accidentally damaged the fittings supplied by Ice Barrell. I waiting for a reply from ice Barrell, but am willing to purchase on Amazon if you know of any solutions? I’m using a 1” tubing. Thx
Awesome! Not hard at all, you really wont need it permanantly, you could also get a unit to use only when needed. I have a link to the one i use in this video (my cleaning kits) if you want to check it out

So I’m in the process of getting this setup. Already bought the chiller and waiting on the 300! I know u mentioned u can just remove the strainer portion to drain. I’m trying to see if there’s a way to direct where it drains to instead of water going everywhere. Any suggestions?
Great question! If that is the cast just get this (you will still need every other adapter on my list to make it work) amzn.to/48h74zu and you can use the spigot that comes with the barrel :)
Hi David, Do you know if there is any way to decrease the sound of the chiller? I know there are sound blankets and enclosures, but I haven't found the best option. Thank you for being the best cold therapy channel on youtube!
Thank you for the love and support! Means the world! I have not played with that at all, other than putting some potted plants around it. Ill play around some more.
So I just purchased an Ice Barrel 300 using your code. Very nice. Question, I live in a four seasons climate and shortly it will be getting cold enough where I will not be having to chill my water much. I would like to filter and keep the water fresh to limit how often I'd have to drain it, especially as it gets colder out. Would it be possible to go from strainer to pump to whole house filter and then back to the plunge, until it starts to get warm out again and I can add the chiller like in this setup? Thanks again
Absolutely! You’d be surprised at how well the strainer does and you could just keep it all running and turn the chiller off in the winter. Did I understand your question correctly? I want to give you the best advice.
@@DavidMausJr I believe so. So same setup as you have here, just turn off the chiller? Water will flow through it but not be chilled by it since there is no need? Am I following? :)
Thanks for the content Dave, any suggestions for adding a Y adapter to connect a hose for draining? The tub is going to be in a garage, so we can’t just remove the strainer dumping water everywhere. Thanks man, keep up the great work!
For sure i get that! They are surprisingly hard to find (the right one) on amazon. All you need to do is get the right size adapter for the build you want to do (3/4" or 1") and get a hose splitter that fits what you are getting. Basically what you would get for a hose bib that you wanted more than one spigot on. Each will have its own shut off valve.
Does anyone have a link for Y connector your shut off valve connector compatible with the 1HP setup? Also, the issue I’m running into with keeping IB300 in garage is the amount of leaking from the barrel when my chiller is off and not flowing.
I was trying to figure out how to do something similar to be able to drain away from the barrel. What I'm doing is putting a cutoff valve before the strainer, so I can stop the flow while I disconnect the tubing running to the chiller and connecting what was left of the 25' of tubing to it with a 3/4 barb to 3/4 barb, and then opening the valve to pump the water away from the tub.
David how you doing brother. I missed you as wodapalooza I was also there, I’ve been watching your videos, wish I would’ve met you and said hi. I recently purchased an ice barrel 300, the bottom spigot bulkhead cracked on me 😅, do you know if I should just get 3/4 bulkhead or is there a link you can recommend. I’m waiting to see the chiller ice barrel releases but they’re late on that release that was supposed to be the 16th, I’m thinking of getting one of those chillers you recommended, I’m in Miami, and the sun faces my balcony in the evening, I’m facing west, should I do the 1/3 or 1/2 hp chiller.
Hi David, recently purchased the ice barrel 300. Coming from Canada would these barrel survive the harsh winters with epsoms salts? Do you think the inlets outlets freeze or crack? Tx
FYI anyone using the smaller water pump the inlet is not 3/4” but 5/8” and it’s impossible to find the right fitting. Best to get the same stronger pump he’s using so you can use the 3/4 “ fitting
Update got the stronger pump and it fits the 3/4" perfectly but then you still have the dam 5/8" on top going to the chiller, and they only provide a 5/8 to 5/8 but it has aeration hole which leaks water, so I did 5/8 to 1" fitting and bought some 1" tubing just for this specific connection. Its a bit of Frankenstein project with the 1/2hp chiller and 3/4 tubing. Also when I contacted aqua they told me the 800gph pump is not even to be used for inline! so I'm guessing the 1100gph is ok to go still.@@DavidMausJr
add a quick connect adapter to the release valve part and just quickly disconnect the chiller /pump assembly and empty water to refill the designed way
Hey @DavidMausJr , do you keep this setup outside at all times? I'm thinking about getting one but I live in an area where it rains/storms a lot. Curious if that would be an issue/obstacle

I have this exact setup with strainer and all
ActiveAqua says to set a deadband setting instead of turning it on and off. Do you do that? If so do you keep the pump running all the time?
Thank you for putting this together, great setup. I have been running for the last two months without issues but recently the filter just stops pumping water after a while which I assume is due to air build up. I primed it by filling the tubes with water and that seems to work for about a day and then the same happens again. Am I doing something wrong and is there a good solution for this? Thank you
Good chance the screen filter is clogged up, take that off and spray it out, that should work
You had two answers on how to add drain outlet to keep water from going on floor when draining.

Did you also send me a message on IG just want to make sure I give you the help you need. Sounds like you got it figured out. 🤙🏽
So sorry that happened! Amazon changes it and adds options. The 1000 is what you need.
Awesome, thanks David 🙏
I tighten the screw that connects the barrel to the filter too tight and now the tube is cracked inside the barrel and leaking. Anyone know where I can order a new part?
Hey David! Thanks for sharing your processes with us. I just followed the exact steps to install an active aqua chiller to my IB 300. Does the strainer get filled to the top when its facing up like that? Mine is only filling up just a little bit so I'm not sure if it's actually filtering the water. Thanks!
Awesome! It should still filter the water just fine. How’s your water flow?
I purchased the pump you link to but the inside female end is 5/8, not 3/4. I am struggling to find a 5/8 to 3/4 coupling to connect the pump to the filter.
Oh no! That is my beef with teh amazon kits, they sometimes add options and you have to select the right one. Im sorry brother
@@DavidMausJr All good. I found a brass fitting that goes from 5/8 to 3/4 t Home Depot. Lowes and Ace didn't have one. Thanks
Where can I find a plastic 3/4 x 3/4 Inch NPT Brass Hex Nipple Male Pipe Adapter? The brass seems to crack and ruin the plastic threads.
Search on Amazon. They are always going out of stock. Hard to keep on the DIY kit list.
Could u do this minus the chiller for the filter and circulation?
Great video on this install!
Thank you!
Can you do a video on maintenance of The Plunge during the winter months, specifically in NJ
For sure!
Send me a DM on Instagram @dmausjr I can help you through it
Does it matter if I were to use the Danner 1200 pump with a 1/4 hp chiller? I’d like to have a little more flow than the 950.
How do you clean out the barrel since your using the outlet for the chiller instead of the drain it comes with?
Could you leave that set up out in a cold garage or out building or would it freeze and break the chiller when it’s below 30 outside?
It should be fine as long as water is always moving through the chiller
hi david , is i have the 1/2 hp chiller , will the 3/4 tubing will fit in the top part of the pump trough the chiller ? i think i heard you saying that the top tub attached to the pump is 1 inch ?
Let's say we have a week or 2 where the ambient temps outside are in the 40's. Can you use pump only to keep the water moving through the 'off chiller' Orr if we're plumbed through the chiller, it needs to be running? If it needs to be running, you would just shortcut the system with pump only flow during colder temps no through chiller, yeah?
Totally you can run the pump with the chiller off, its basically just tubes running through the chilling unit and that is what you turn on.
@@DavidMausJr perfect. Thanks!
Love the video, where was the walkinginrain shut off valve mentioned in the video?
My 1HP is set up with 3/4 inch (connections, hose, etc) ... Any advantages to changing to 1 inch or disadvantages/issues staying with 3/4?
You should be good to go with it! It just helps with water flow rate but you are fine with 3/4"
Where can I find a plastic homogeneous 3/4 x 3/4 Inch NPT Brass Hex Nipple Male Pipe Adapter? The brass
Search Amazon they are always in and out of stock.
Great video. Makes it really simple. I've seen in other videos that you thought 1/4hp chiller would be enough for the IB300. Anymore thoughts on that? I got my barrel and the chiller is next!
Yes 1/4 is plenty with the insulation. 🤙🏽
Super helpful tutorial. I live in a Europe and wondering if you can recommend the pump/ filter and chiller options available in the EU?
Look up the equivalent to the Active Aqua. I don’t know the name there but the same manufacturer makes most around the world.
The male thread to male thread, where it connects to the pump keeps cracking and leaking water. Think it’s due to the weight of the pump not leaning on anything. This has been my second pump that’s cracked…
Would you recommend using an ozone generator with air stone with the ice barrel?
Yes
so you found that you didn't need any Teflon tape or o-rings on any of the fittings that you screw in that are from leaking or slightly dripping? also all fittings that were PVC like this for just hand tighten you didn't need tools to stop them from leaking etc..
I really think so!
Active Aqua says they are for indoor use only, do you have any recommendations on a covering for it outside?
Thank you @DavidMausJr Very appreciate of your helpful reviews.
Oh no! That a thick plug how did you crack that. Send me a pic of instagram @dmausjr
David, great video. Quick question. If I wanted to add a filter would that go in the place of the strainer? Or is that something that I would need to add to the system in addition to the strainer? If that is the case, where in the system would it be placed? Thanks for any guidance.
Finally got it set up. It works good. But it is leaking (dripping) from two of the connections. Does it do that on yours?
It can be a little finicky and when I change it up I can get slight drips, just have to tighten or losen a small amount usually.
@@DavidMausJr thanks. And last question then I swear I’ll leave you alone. Although I live in Texas, it’s supposed to be down in single digits and my chiller is out side. You think that will be an issue or should I dc it and bring the chiller inside
@DavidMausJr do you recommend using plumbers tape on the thread of the adapters and whatnot?
You can but its not entirely needed.
Could i use the all the parts with your 1/2hp kit with 1/4 hp chiller? I would rather have plastic then stainless fittings
For sure just adjust the size if needed
Thanks!
Use the plumber's tape that comes with the Ice Barrel 300. I found the ice barrel leaked until I added it.
Think a 1/2 HP paired with the 300 can hang for the stupid hot summers in Phoenix? Or is it best to go with more horses? It’ll be under the patio, but outside will still be a brisk 110°.
With the 300 it should be good to go but the 1hp is a complete beast and can handle any heat I’ve thrown at it

Thanks!
Same question here. No filter or ozone. Why? What do you do instead?
Glad you asked! The filters are just another monthly cost and they are going to get nasty. i use the Ice Barrel Stabilizer which works great plus i have a portable ozone machine i use in all my plunges about once a month. My water stays clean and clear without needing any extra stuff but people do go that route too and its great! I just like simple. Hi David. I am terrible at DIY projects. I bought the ice barrel 300 tub and a Nuvio recovery chiller (1/3 HP). I am struggling to figure out how to connect it. Can you help?
With your Ice barrel 300 setup. How low can you get the temp during Florida’s summer ?
39 on the money, and you can always add ice to that to make it lower. The insulation does an incredible job.
@@DavidMausJr was this using the 1hp or 1/2 hp chiller? I believe you said you keep it outdoors?
Hey David. Amazon has some 1/2 HP chillers in stock if you want to let people know.
Whoop whoop!!
Has anyone used the 1,000 pump with the 1/4 chiller. I see the recommend 500 to 800 but would like to use the 3/4 adapters. Smaller pumps use 5/8
Water stays clean for
Months.
The silicon tubing in the amazon kit is 3/4 inch inner diameter and you say the tube should be 1 inch, right? I dont understand
The sizing is different for each chiller. It depends on the chiller u pick
Does the strainer leak have you figured out how to set it up without leaks?
Thanks for all the helpful content brother! If you choose not to run the chiller 24/7 do you turn both the chiller and pump off?
Thanks!! You sure can, but it will also shut itself off when the desired temp is reached (the chiller)
How often do you change your strainer? And does it keep your water clean? I seen others using a bigger filter and what not
I change the water and clean the strainer once a month. It does a great job. A lot of people went overkill but that is the beauty of a DIY
Hey David, what is the lowest temp you are able to get down to on the 1/2HP or 1HP chillers when used with the ice barrel 300?

If I may ask two follow up questions:
(1)PUMP SIZE: Is there any concern around the Active Aqua Submersible Water Pump being too forceful at 800 GPH since the tank is so small? I noticed that many whole system cold plunge manufactures use 400 GPH pumps (which is the min Active Aqua recommends with the 1/4HP chiller)? Would welcome any thoughts you may have in reply.
(2) STRAINER CLEANING: How often do you recommend cleaning the strainer?
Thanks again for any additional info you may be able to share.
I currently run the 1/4 with a 1300 GPH pump on the ModTub and its had no issues and what they use. Im sure you can get away with smaller but flow rate is the important variable for keeping the water cool in hot months

I really like the ice barrel 300, but I would like it even more if it had 1 in threaded holes instead of the 3/4 in. It seems like you will be putting a strain on the chiller if you opt for a chiller that has 1 in intake outlet.
Totally agree. 1” would be epic. That’s why I recommend getting the 3/4 - 1 inch adapter.
@@DavidMausJr hey thanks for replying. Even with the adapter, you're still shrinking the hole to 3/4-in. Still hoping they upgrade to a one inch hole and let people buy adapters to get it down to 3/4-in if they want, haha

I have a question can I use a 1/2 horsepower chiller with 2 pumps to cool and filtrate 2 ice barrel 300’s at same time?
That is an EXCELLENT question and i honestly dont see why not. however i would probably go with the 1HP for the amount of water you want to push.
Can you use a pump with less power? I have a 400gph and I’m trying to decide if I need to buy the one in the video

Get a siphon that can connect to a garden hose
I was trying to figure out how to do something similar to be able to drain away from the barrel. What I'm doing is putting a cutoff valve before the strainer, so I can stop the flow while I disconnect the tubing running to the chiller and connecting what was left of the 25' of tubing to it with a 3/4 barb to 3/4 barb, and then opening the valve to pump the water away from the tub.
David, I'm wondering about having the pump run only when the chiller runs. Do you have any thoughts on that?
You can absolutely put this on a timer and save some electricity cost.
Hey! Sad to have missed you too! I would go with the 1/4 or 1/2 AA. Just published a new video yesterday on this topic, check it out!
Hi David, recently purchased the ice barrel 300. Coming from Canada would these barrel survive the harsh winters with epsoms salts? Do you think the inlets outlets freeze or crack? Tx
Thats a great question but i do know that IB was made for harsh winter climates.
you said it runs 24/7 out side ?
is it uncovered? rained on?
mine is coming in today , excited thanks for all the great info
That is correct! Awesome!! Enjoy!
FYI anyone using the smaller water pump the inlet is not 3/4” but 5/8” and it’s impossible to find the right fitting. Best to get the same stronger pump he’s using so you can use the 3/4 “ fitting
great catch!
Dumb question, but how do you empty the water once the chiller is attached? Is there a seperate port? Asking for cleaning purposes.
add a quick connect adapter to the release valve part and just quickly disconnect the chiller /pump assembly and empty water to refill the designed way
Great suggestion. Where I have mine I can just open up the strainer canister and it will all drain out
Hey @DavidMausJr , do you keep this setup outside at all times? I'm thinking about getting one but I live in an area where it rains/storms a lot. Curious if that would be an issue/obstacle
Yep! it lives outside at all times and have no issues. I am in FL and it rains a lot too
