  • Special thanks to Randall Nelson ‪@RandyforRoyals‬ and Steve Carlson‪@stevecarlsonvinylcommunity9147‬ for convincing me to do these Top Album rankings. I'm going to pick a few bands to do these rankings with to get myself in practice. I usually don't like doing ranking videos because my tastes vary from day to day, however, Randy explained the value of these ranking lists to other VC members, and I realized that it's also the reason why I like to watch them. So, hopefully you can find some value in my ranking of King Crimson studio albums as a huge King Crimson fan. Enjoy and tell me what you think, you can even list your own ranking in the comments if you want.

    Really enjoyed that Mike. I only have their 70s albums, so can’t judge their later material. I do agree with putting Red at the top. Cheers.

      Yes I'm glad you are a "Red" fan. In my opinion, "Thrak" is the closest album to that with its mix of heaviness and beauty.

    When I clicked this vid and saw you were doing a King Crimson ranking.. I knew that your #1 was going to be " Red" because I always feel we have similar choices in bands / artists. I like your list a lot, and agree with almost every spot on your Top Ten ! Good choice on " Thrax" as well ! 😊

      It always amazes me how much we agree on our music tastes and choices. I guess that's why your channel is one of my favorites. Plus the fact that I consider you a good friend who I'd love to go crate digging with

      @TCat's Deep Vinyl Traxx Don't think so at all.. " Larks Tongue" is way up there for me, and I'm gonna give Thrax" a good listen again, soon ! ✌️

      I knew you were a big KC fan. I'm very glad you enjoyed this one. I've been a long time fan and doing this ranking is tough because I love all of their albums, but I'm pretty happy with the order I put them in....at least for today 😂

    Thanks for doing this Mike, I personally learnt so much about KC from this. I only have a couple of studio albums so I will now be refocused on what albums I need to track down. I’d heard you talk lovingly about Red before so I guessed that would be very high. Well done, really excellent video and the graphics also helped. Thanks. Mike🎸

      I'm going to try to do another episode on the KC album series hopefully this week with more needle drops. It's good to see so many people are taking an interest in them since I've started reviewing each album. Thank you so much for your support Mike!

      I'm curious what your number 1 is. I'm very jealous that you got to see them during that period of time when they had what I think was one of their perfect line-ups

    Mike, this was really informative, especially for someone who is not entirely familiar with their music. I enjoyed the needle drops from your prior KC video. I have to grab a couple of their CDs. You have a wonderful KC vinyl collection! I'm defiantly going to check out Red.

      Red is a great album especially the track Starless which is a masterpiece. It has a beautiful main melody in the vocals and the 2nd half builds up to a very satisfying ending. Yes it is 12 minutes but it is my favorite track ever. I'll be going back to reviewing each album very soon with the needledrops.

    I have the Beat album, didn't know it was the 13th. Didn't know they had that many albums. It's not like their other albums, but I do like it. I have Lizzard, Haven't listened to it in a while. I bought a new copy of Court of the Crimson King...I'll never see that in good condition in the wild. It is a double album. The second album is alternative takes, kinda cool. Also have In the Wake of Poseidon. Thank you for sharing. Some stuff to watch for and maybe some to avoid. Cheers.

    • @TCatsDeepVinylTraxx
      @TCatsDeepVinylTraxx  ปีที่แล้ว

      That is the same edition of "Court" that I have and I love the alternative takes that are included. It's hard to do a ranking video when every one of the band's albums are excellent. I think "Beat" is great even if it was #13 in my ranking, but its still an album that I love. Thanks for watching!

    Hi Mike , saw the Thrak tour twice and absolutely loved that phase and album , People is so funky with Levins funk fingers. Good to see a less predictable ranking. Hope you are well .

      Thank you for the comment. I think in most cases, that if you have been a fan for a while, that you start to recognize which albums tend to have "staying power" and which ones don't age quite as well over many listens.

    I love this vid. I want the Reconstruction for the gorgeous cover. I have about 1/3 of their output but I want to be a completist since they are so interesting. That is surprising where you put Court but great justification. Thank you for this!! I look forward to the continuation of the individual album breakdowns.

    Okay I have #7 and #5. A lot of these I have never seen before. I do see Red once in awhile, I may now give it a try to see why it’s in your top spot

    • @TCatsDeepVinylTraxx
      @TCatsDeepVinylTraxx  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes by all means check out Red. Its a great album, but the song Starless is the most eclectic, beautiful and innovative track ever in my opinion. The theme and melody are so heartfelt and emotional but the 2nd half just blows me away the way it builds tension and has such a satisfying conclusion is perfect.

      @@TCatsDeepVinylTraxx I get the impression that most hardcore King Crimson fans regard 'Red' as the single greatest of their LPs, while singling out "Starless" as their greatest track. Though I too am wary of ranking works of art, I perceive 'Larks' Tongues in Aspic' as overall stronger than 'Red', which in turn is stronger than 'In the Court of the Crimson King' (which is the first King Crimson album I heard, and which contains my favorite King Crimson song, "The Court of the Crimson King").

    • @TCatsDeepVinylTraxx
      @TCatsDeepVinylTraxx  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@barrymoore4470 I know that a lot of the KC hardcore fans consider Red their best album, but I decided that long before I knew it was considered the "fan's favorite". I also decided Thrak was my 2nd favorite before I knew that it wasn't well received among most listeners. I don't pay much attention to what others say about certain albums before I decide if I like it or not, though I do take recommendations from others. As you probably know, most non-KC fans consider In the Court of the Crimson King as their best album. The music has to touch me in some way before I say it's an artist's best and then it takes time before I commit to it, sometimes many years. I also understand that everyone has their own opinions and I am learning that I can't criticize anyone else's taste based on my own, which has been a hard lesson to learn, but I'm getting better. If Taylor Swift or another popular artist is not my cup of tea, it doesn't mean that have any right to try to convince them any differently. So that is what I've been trying to do, to not give them an editorial about why my likes or dislikes are better than theirs. But that is also another reason why I don't like to do top 10 picks along with the fact that my music tastes can change somewhat from one day to the next depending on my mood or whatever. Larks' Tongues in Aspic will always be one of my all-time favorite albums though because of it's artistic merit but also because it speaks to my soul.

    I like watching other people’s lists too. I like to see how they rank albums and hear their opinions about albums I don’t have.
    I really like Discipline! For me, it’s the KC album (of the four I have) that I can enjoy the most tracks.

    • @TCatsDeepVinylTraxx
      @TCatsDeepVinylTraxx  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Discipline is the favorite for a lot of people. It is an album that is still very influential and the first KC album with the great Adrian Belew. When I listen to Discipline, I can hear foreshadows of industrial rock. The style of music on that album comes from the type of experimental music that Belew and Fripp were developing during King Crimson's first hiatus. I love Discipline !

      @musicisajourney ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@TCatsDeepVinylTraxx My favourite KC song, however, is One More Red Nightmare. I love Bruford’s drumming on that one.

    • @barrymoore4470
      @barrymoore4470 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@musicisajourney There is a riff heard in "One More Red Nightmare" where I could swear I'm listening to "Hunted by a Freak" by the Scottish band Mogwai, released in 2003, almost twenty-nine years after this classic King Crimson LP. It shows how much King Crimson's music was the sound of the future.

    • @musicisajourney
      @musicisajourney ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@barrymoore4470 There’s a song by the Japanese heavy metal band, Ningen Isu, where I thought the riff sounded so familiar and finally guessed it must be Red. Comparing the two, I heard they were not the same, but Ningen Isu are fans of King Crimson and previously stated that at least a couple of times they were going for a King Crimson approach for certain riffs.

    • @musicisajourney

      @@barrymoore4470 Mogwai? Yes, now I think I remember someone saying a Ningen Isu riff sounded like Mogwai. The KC influence?
