    As a Greek I give my seal of approval for this very well researched and structured video, its on point on both negatives and positive and very well balanced non biased of how it is to live in Greece without any bs exaggeration. Love it , great job subscribed :)

    Thanks for the education. I'M 70 years old and have been thinking of retiring there as I believe I could live relatively comfortably there. I've always been fascinated with Greek history and mythology. I'm thinking I might be to old now and I'm terrible at learning languages. I've always dreamed of riding my motorcycle in the Peloponnese. Maybe one day soon, it's so beautiful there...thanks again.

      Hi Gary, I’m turning 65 and am seriously considering retiring in Greece. Trying to do as much research as I can. May I ask if you ever did get to Greece and where you’re from originally? All my grandparents were from the Peloponnese and I’m American. I know this is an old post but I hope you see this.

    Thank you very much, this was a very informative video and coming from a person who is actually living in Greece makes it a true gem, my wife and i are planing on establishing our own business in Europe and Greece was one of the locations we were looking at, of course many factors have to be taken into consideration and one of them was the tax we have to pay and the school for our 2 children, i will be looking forward to your new videos and i hope we can get a more in detail video about how did you go about setting up your business there and how long did the process take etc etc. again i highly appreciate your effort and wish you all the best.

    It was wonderful seeing the perspective of a foreigner, I'm very happy you enjoy our country. Hope you the best with Greek, it's honestly a very difficult language. To be a bit antagonistic, I'll just say Greece is heaven for the rich, but bottom of the barrel for its youth and middle class. Compared to most of Europe, at least.

    • @LivinginGreece
      @LivinginGreece  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      whilst we are by no means rich we know we have it slightly easier here than some of the greek people. The minimum wage is incredably low and unemployoment is high. Taxation is high and complex so even if people do make a little money they have to pay tax on it. We can earn a slightly higher wage because we work online. But we do appreciate that great weather and fantastic food is of little consequence when you have only a little money. Hopefully now the reparations to the IMF and World Bank, EU and Germany are paid off, Greece can regain full control of its finances and help those at the bottom of the income scale.

    just a small disagreement on what is said at the 34th minute: you can absolutely get a job in a multinational company in Athens if you don't speak a word of Greek... I know several people working for Philip Morris , Sanofi, Petroleum companies, Shipping, Brittish Pharmaceutical companies and other multinational businesses that never learnt Greek and have been here for more than 7 years.... also Hotels and tourism related businesses may hire you for a non-receptionist work without knowing Greek anywhere in the rural areas or islands

It can be daunting to make the move but once you have done it, you wonder why it was so much worry. Why not try it for say 6 months over the summer and see if you want to go back to UK? We rent our UK house out so will always have something to fall back on if needed.

    I really want to move to Greece because my mother said it was beautiful. Her side of the family come from Spartans, but I am just a little bit and I do not speak Greek. I am 53 years old after 15 years of truck driving I am just sick and tired of living in the US. I want to sell my house and buy something very small and simple but I understand work is very hard to get for expats. That really concerns me. I am in fantastic shape for my age and a fast learner. But I am still concerned about language barriers and employment opportunity.

      @LivinginGreece  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Ralph, thanks for watching, we are going to make a video about working as an expat in greece in the next month or so, so stay tuned. Yes it can be difficult to find work, it depends on your skill set and language level. We work online so can be based anywhere in the world so we are luck in that respect. I do know many expats who work here in all different kinds of jobs. Another thing to consider is that life here can be very much cheaper than at home so you might not need to earn as much or work as much. We try to work a 3 day week and manage to survive most of the time. This makes doing different or lower paid work easier. Wages are not very high here. I'll explain more in the video as there is a lot to think about.🙂

    • @roberthanley
      @roberthanley 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Hi Ralph. As an Irish person living in Spain, I think you are right to want to move from the United States to a European country like Greece - excellent culture and food, with success in life not being measured in money terms. Since you say you are a fast learner, and because you do not need a huge amount of money to have a nice quality of life in a country like Spain or Greece, here is my recommendation: learn to earn money online by teaching English online - US-based companies like Cambly do not require any particular qualifications, only the ability to speak English. You could try this right now in the United States; and, if it works out, you would then have the freedom to live anywhere in the world without needing any local work - so long as you have sufficient access to internet. Your Spartan heritage is something to be very proud of. Buena suerte from Spain.

    I went the other way around! Left for Australia around 2011 and even after so many years i still think Greece is much better on beautiful places, food, entertainment industry and the kind of humour that we have that you won’t find easily in English ppl! Thank God i already knew English - you definitely don’t want to come here and start having thick accent or not being able to communicate. Can be a huge barrier for work and of course the racism that goes with it. Though Australia have millions of immigrants or 2nd and 3rd generation ppl, so it’s not like Greece which is more homogeneous and intact in that respect. Greeks are pretty much ok and they don’t have issues with Europeans certainly not from the UK. I still remember young British guys and girls showing their boobs and theirs arse in Crete outside clubs but i guess being young and drunk kinda have a certain effect on ppl when they go abroad. Living in a village is different from living in a big city like Athens, but then again if you enjoy ur time over there then it’s totally fine! Hope that one day i will come again and visit Greece, it’s been 12 years now and it feels weird not being able to visit the place where my family is.

      Interesting perspective from a fellow immigrant. You are right, greeks are really fine with foreigners, even from countries with a dodgy past like Turkey and Germany. Which is more than can be said for the UK. 12 years is a long time to be away from the family. We hope you get home to see them soon!

    Hi Andy + Tanya I just got back from holiday in Rhodes , very nice quite scenic! Anyway one thing you talked about in your vid was the price of electricity! ..I thought to myself while in Rhodes ,hang on all this sunlight they have here why don't they use solar energy surely this will help with electricity prices! Surely this is the way to go .. I saw some modern new builds and they had some tiny ones ! But in general none anywhere ! Doesn't make sense to me !

      That’s a good point , some of the coastal areas have a nice breeze blowing so one would think if a wind turbine or solar as you mentioned was set up would be the road to go but maybe there are restrictions!

      Many houses have hot water heaters on the roofs with the tank on the side, Those are not solar pannels, only radiators heating the water.
      There are are many eolian farms (wind farms) on some high mountains and in the Greek islands.
      A lot more could be built, However, Those Solar pannels and wind farms are not so cute for a country dependent on 'post-card perfect' scenes !

    This is exactly the video I’ve been looking for! Honest, balanced and subjective! Well done. I turned 50 this year, a milestone. Keep thinking what, how do I want to spend rest of my life? In my opinion the U.K. is going down the pan! Work life balance so unbalanced, lack of community, work all week, exhausted at weekends and for what? Really??? So? What do I plan for the future? Change of environment, lifestyle, country, etc? 6 months a year, all permanent residency shift? Most definitely one of these. My experience of Greece is predominantly some of the Ionian islands a few times, plus Rhodes. All ready I love what I’ve experienced, albeit in holiday season. But, out of season, can it be worse than living in the U.K.? Errr? I very much doubt it! I’m heading to Zakynthos in a few weeks time for holiday, “thinking time.”. I’ll no doubt be watching this video whilst there! It’ll be a great help! 🙏

    As concerns in finding friends ... like in all kind of engines even with the social ones if you like to know what is inside or better take part you must first stop it then open it. A Greek “social-village” engine is self-stoped in the Bar/kafeneio, the church, in festivities or sport activities else you can stop such engine by inviting people to your house from time to time.
    Since you find difficult to learn Greek (you must instead persist and of course turn on the television more often for exercise) and you are not an orthodox as well as in your age sport activities is , maybe, not a valid option i recommend you to learn Backgammon (a Greek effortless national sport) and so spend more time in Kafeneio

    Nice video. Lots of useful info. I lived myself in Athens, for four years. Thought that was until 2003, I can confirm that all what you said is true.
    Greece might not be 100% perfect, certainly, but there are worse places in the world to live at.
    However, there is something in which I do not totally agree, and it is about the Greek philoxenia issue..
    Let me tell you first, that I love Greece deeply. No matter what.
    I lived in the capital, only , but I know that the Greek character is not always as friendly and good-humored as the youtubers insist on saying.
    Everybody highlights the Greek phylloxenia, as if it were something intrinsic to the Greek caracter. but let's not forget that the word xenophobia is also a greek word. Think about it.
    I don't mean to offend anyone, but things are the way they are.
    I am sure those that, those who think that Greece is the worst country in the world to live in, would have been grateful if someone had told them the "harsh truth" and not a sugar-coated version of things.
    Perhaps, they would have arrived to the country, more prepared for the cultural shock, once there.
    And... Don't you have any plans to learn Greek?

    • @LivinginGreece
      @LivinginGreece  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      All very true, I'm certain that not all Greeks are friendly just as you say. I do think there are more friendly people in Greece than those that are openly hostile. I can only speak from our experience and say that the majority of people here are very friendly and welcoming. We probably wouldn't know those who aren't anyway. Learning greek is essential here and we are slowly learning a little but have plans to study properly when we have finished house renovations!

      It depends how you act if you go to Greece with an attitude and arrogance thinking you are better than them then no they won't be friendly but saying that most GREEKS go by the famous FILOTIMO and are amazing people

    • @inmyopinion8507
      @inmyopinion8507 ปีที่แล้ว

      I do not know about the amount of attitude or arrogance you find some people show when in Greece. Some tourist are as you say, some arem't.
      I know what I said. No theories. No "I think" or "in my opinion". I've worked in tourism there, for several years and know how they act, react and behave.
      I do not need to explain myself any longer. If you haven't run into those kinds of people, good for you. But that, doesn't make them invisible or non-existent. @@athenarockabilly6245
