I also tend to find myself synching from the M32 to the DFAM.. on the other hand when I'm connecting to a larger modular system I prefer having a separate master clock / clock divider module type thing that goes out to everything else including the Mother, so that the M32 doesn't have to be running to get the whole system moving (not the subject of this vid obviously :)
Yeah, I've been using Pam's as a master clock. I've actually been encountering problems with using the Mother as the master clock. Sometimes it creates a stutter step and throws everything off right on the initial trigger. It's not all the time, but enough to be an annoyance...
Loving your Moog tutorials. Learned so much! I've managed to sync my M32 with my Maschine mk3 via MIDI cable and I have my M32 patched into my DFAM. On my M32, I can now easily change the note durations to slow it down if I'm doing something like D&B at 170bpm. BUT! I can't seem to figure out how to slow down the DFAM too. Is there a way to do this? Thanks!
Yep. Assuming you're going from the assignable output to the DFAM, you have some options. First, on Page 1 of the Setup Menu - option 3 divides the sequencer clock of the mother by 2. Option 4 will slow it down by dividing by 4! If that doesn't get you where you want to go, you could change the Clock Output PPQN on page 5. Hope that helps!
How can I sync Moog Sound Studio to receive sync from Arturia Keystep Sequencer ? I need to send midi out from Keystep to midi in of Mother 32 to make Dfam and Subharmonicon work together with Mother 32.
Make sure the switches on the back are set to "internal" on the Keystep. This will set it as the Master Clock. Try that and let me know if it resolves the issue! :)
@@braintree56 Hi, please, I just tried that and there is no sync in Moog Sound Studio, I used sync cable from sync out keystep to tempo in of Mother 32 and midi out from keystep to midi in of Mother 32 being Mother 32 as primary clock, I mean, assign out Mother to adv clock in Dfam with trigger out Dfam to clock in Subharmonicon. The tempo in of Mother set to mode 2 and 3 and assign out of Mother set to mode 2 and 3.Thanks
@@johnkx2484 Ok. Help me understand exactly what the problem is. Are you playing a sequence from the keystep and the DFAM and Subharmonicon aren't syncing up?
@@johnkx2484 I just tried it and I was able to sync everything. 1. Make sure the Keystep is set to "Internal" 2. Plug Midi out of the Keystep into the Midi in of the Mother. You DO NOT need to patch from the Sync to the tempo in. 3. Go to the settings menu on the Mother by pressing "Shift+Reset+Set End+8" 4. Go to page 1. and select option 2. 5. Patch from the Assignable output to the Adv of the DFAM. Make sure that the Run/Stop Button is activated. That should do it... Let me know if that works.
Fantastic vids Braintree56, so keep 'em coming! I have a general query on syncing to an external drum machine the Berhinger RD-9. I know I need trigger out (there are 3 on the RD-9), but how do we know what PPQ for the DFAM? Also could you offer any advice on adding something like the Ableton Push 3 to your setup and connecting say, MIDI to CV to give more flexibility for pitch control on DFAM? I'd love to see more vids on controlling the DFAM and/or Mother 32 via something like Ableton Push 3. Cheers!
Thanks! For your first question - PPQN doesn't really apply to the DFAM. It moves one step for every trigger (pulse) it gets. So you want each step to be a 16th note, you would have to set the Drum Machine to 4ppqn. If you want each step to be a Quarter note set it to 1ppqn. I don't use Ableton so I won't be able to do any videos on it at the moment. However, I might go down that road eventually. I know that Ableton has CV tools that you could use which - I think - could be used to program in specific pitches. You would have to patch it into the VCO input...
@@braintree56 Thank you for the response, that makes sense! Keep up the good work with the excellent vids and tutorials, defo some of the best I ahve seen on DFAM, Mother and others on TH-cam.
Thank you for the great and concise videos! Diving into your videos into each piece and trying to sync up the Sound Studio 3 to run in conjunction with a computer and have units that are able to sens MIDI and/or cv/gate (the DFAM is great piece and hoping to acquire the Serendipity DFAM Thing to amend the DFAM's omission to extend with the reset/stop function...) Could I ask which would be the preferred way to be able to start/sync the Sound Studio 3, the Mother 32 is the ideal candidate to be the first in chain? Keep up doing the great work!
Thanks! I prefer the Mother. There is a video on the different syncing options. For me going Mother to DFAM to Sub has been the easiest. With the others you'd have to use multiples or the run/stop is a bit funky. I suppose you could get it to work with another chain - but that's my preferred method.

Yes, I have another synth and the problem is the same, the switch is set to internal in Keystep being the Keystep is the master sending sequence into Mother. and I changed my midi cable and channels midi and nothing happens.
Hi, I got it, the problem was that the patter bank bottom in Mother must be empty, no sequence recorded, to Keystep send midi master data by midi out with sync ok in Dfam , Mother and Sub, anyway, thanks.
I actually tried out a lot of different patch cables and settled on Luigi's Modular. I really like them a lot. They don't get kinked and feel really nice. You can also get each color in different lengths whereas it seems other makers would make different lengths different colors. My only "issue" is that the colors are different from the pictures online. Blue looks navy online, but it's kind of a sky blue. Nonetheless - I think you'd be happy with them. :) (I did not like their braided cables... Unfortunately not. You'd have to clock from something else to get the swing.
