Trying Cheap Supermarket Sushi in Japan

  • Sushi from a Japanese supermarket called Aeon My Basket is very reasonably priced. When there’s so much good sushi in Tokyo, is there any reason to eat sushi from this supermarket?

Started “watching” your videos last summer as my sight was diminishing from some very bad cataracts. Your voices were very soothing thru that very depressing time. Thankfully surgery was very successful on both eyes and now I’m able to see your cheerful faces as well. Thank you for what you do. A faithful subscriber in western Colorado USA. 🙏

I only eat nigiri now. I love the taste of fish and the ocean not being interrupted by anything. Sashimi if possible but I usually get that at the sushi restaurant.

During my solo trip to Tokyo last time, I went to a supermarket inside the Nakano Broadway. Stumbled upon a shop that selling sushi and I got a good bargain on discounted sushi! Everything is so cheap and still fresh! I was in heaven but too bad I only can choose 1 set... So sad....

Koyadofu! OMGEEE! When I was a child, I called them little “pillows.” Talk about old school! Wow!! My okasama always always put them into futomaki that she made for us. Great sets of sushi for such a low price! I love makizushi and inari combo’s, hubby loves nigiri sets, Josh loves chirashi. I also like spicy tuna rolls. I still have yet to try tuna/mayo sushi or onigiri though.... Thank you boys, for sharing. The love and respect that you have for each other, was evident, in each of you giving up your favorites to the other. 🥰♥️🥰 My heart is full!

I miss this so much when not in Japan. Not just the sushi but the whole deli section of a Japanese supermarket (scratch that, I miss the Japanese supermarket in general). I've never seen sekihan in a sushi set. so interesting. I love kanpyo maki, as well as the ika nigiri and tamago yaki nigiri (if I have to chose from these sets). I never had tobiko sushi. only the tobiko eggs and I love agodashi (the dashi from flying fish). The shabu shabu soshi looks soo good. Would love to try that! perhaps it is better is you eat it with a yaki niku or sesame dipping sauce? I had a kalbi sushi at a kaiten sushi place in sugamo. That was great. Perhaps a bit strange but grilled meat and sushi rice go really well together I think, if yo get the seasonings right.
Maybe a gunkan sushi with egg salad or potato salad would be great. What do you think? Perhaps think of some interesting sushi recipes?

When my grandmother would make sushi she would put me (1-2 yrs old) on the kitchen table with it. I would have two fistfuls of sushi that I would be eating. Lol That was me helping her. I once OD'd on "stinky" daikon pickle. Sick for days after. 😂 I ate an entire jar of them when I wasn't being watched.

As the old saying goes: Different strokes for different folks. You do you! For example, I like to add a little extra wasabi when I eat fattier sushi like chutoro. I find that the fresh sharpness of the wasabi helps to balance out the fatty fish.

I think it's a case of 'when you know the rules you can break 'em'. It's when people come along like slobs without any interest in learning cultural etiquette and culinary tradition and how it all comes together to form a culture that people get grossed out or offended. But I bet you know precisely how to conduct yourself at a sushi restaurant so when eating in private, sure, eat exactly how you want, I totally agree with you there. Someone recently tried to lecture me online about where Turkish coffee fits in during the day, and that my wanting to drink it around breakfast time was 'all wrong'. I laughed and thought, 'it's my bloody kitchen and dude, you don't even know me, let alone what ethnicity I am or what country I'm typing from!!' What a weirdo I thought. Drench that sushi!

I remember visiting my elderly aunt in Kyoto. She said I had to take her to the supermarket late in the afternoon because that's when all the lunchtime sushi sets were marked half-price off. The supermarket would *time "fresh" stamp* all the sushi sets so you knew when it was prepared. My elderly aunt said that supermarkets that *time "fresh" stamp* their sushi sets have the best quality and to be very careful of stores that don't *time "fresh" stamp* their sushi.

Cheap sushi from a Japanese supermarket is probably better than any sushi from a mainland US supermarket.😀 Being vegetarian, I don't have to worry about the freshness and quality of fish in my sushi, so I have an easier time of getting supermarket sushi that's pretty good. Honestly, I usually make it myself in the way I was taught as a kid in Hawaii. 👍🏼

Inarizushi is the bomb. I'd be perfectly happy with just the simple one you had there... but having other stuff in there (sweet green seaweed, agar-agar, sesame seed, shreds of nori!) makes it even better. :) Just about everything here looked phenomenally good for supermarket sushi -- I happen to love surimi, so the imitation crab would also be quite nice for me.
I love tobiko nigirizushi... especially the beautiful, emerald-green wasabi tobiko, which can most definitely launch one's sinuses to the moon. From what I understand, tamago is usually the dessert in a nigirizushi course. It certainly is sweet enough!

While some American's often associate Sushi as "raw fish" , I noticed most sushi lovers in general are not afraid to branch out outside of the California roll. Maybe that's just where I live though.
Also, imitation crab is a gift from the gods.

I’m lucky enough to live in an area of the US where we have Wegman’s grocery stores and in our Wegman’s we have the fresh market and cafes...they have a sushi ya with fresh sushi made from 7am-7pm and it is delicious!!!! If you go after 7pm they fill the little refrigerators with the sushi and sashimi sets and you can get it discounted. I typically grab a maki set...two types of rolls 12 pcs & a nigiri set two types & 8pcs for about $13USD. A really good mixed fish sashimi set is about $10USD
    I 💗 Wegman’s sushi ya

You just cannot go wrong eating food in Japan from a Convenience store! Funny some of the foods entrees are very simple but others are complex to make and all are DLUX!

I like the way you guys assess the food you review. It is detailed and honest.
Japan generally has great food and there are lots of very good options at convenience stores and supermarkets but not everything is good. Your videos bring that out in a very enjoyable way. Keep up the good work.

Wow, can't get over the supermarket prices of sushi. In the US, supermarket sushi isn't cheap. It's like $8-$15

It's about the same price here in Aus but we have better quality seafood, so much so that we export local fish to Japan for sashimi!

One contributing price factor is that sushi is treated as a specialty food in the USA.

Since we don't have a lot of options for sushi in my area, the closest one being in Middletown and I don't think that they are open, the best ones that I have found are at Hannaford supermarket so far. Your first sushi dish caught my attention big time

There is sushi in supermarkets here in Canada I have tried but it tastes really bad. There is one sushi restaurant in my town that is really good that my husband and I eat at often. I love Saba and natto. I have ate live squid and fish when we were in my husbands hometown of Nagasaki 2 years ago, It was really good.

Main problem with supermarket Sushi is that it's made using produce that's reached the end of its shelf life, so rather than throw it out, they turn it into Sushi or something else.

There's a supermarket in my town that has a vendor inside that makes authentic sushi (owner is japanese and she uses sushi grade fish) and she's a family friend of ours. She always makes me an Inari whenever we come by and get sushi for lunch. :) It's been a while since I've seen her with everything going on but this video made me think of her.
