When the name "Shelby Cobra" is whispered among automotive enthusiasts, the image of a thunderous V8 engine nestled within a curvaceous roadster immediately springs to life. The Cobra's legacy is etched in speed and style, originating from the partnership between legendary racer and engine builder Carroll Shelby and AC Cars in the 1960s. However, the Cobra story is about to be rewritten with the debut of a truly insane creation - the "Diamond Edition Carbon Fiber Shelby Cobra Race Car" by Classic Recreations. Now the name is kind of lame, but a fully carbon fiber cobra isn’t.
Now for those that aren’t all tha familiar with the cobra, The tale of the Shelby Cobra is a symphony of power and speed, conceived from Carroll Shelby's ambitious vision of combining small British sports car elegance with the heart-pounding vigor of American muscle. This marriage birthed the original AC Cobra in 1962 - a lightweight roadster sporting a Ford V8 engine, propelling it to exhilarating speeds. With each Cobra painted in an iconic shade of blue, the legend took shape on racetracks, as these roadsters wreaked havoc on competitors across Europe and North America.
The Cobra's unmatched performance and innate ability to dominate the racing scene solidified its place in history. Powered by a thumping V8 engine, it tore through the competition, including the formidable Chevrolet Corvette. By 1965, Carroll Shelby had conjured the legendary 427 Cobra, pushing the envelope further with a monstrous 7.0-liter engine that unleashed over 485 horsepower in its racing trim. And you need to remember this car tipped the scales at 1068KG’s ot 2355ibs. Which meant that this thing had an unrivled power to weight ratio.
Fast-forward to the present day, where Classic Recreations has embarked on an audacious journey to redefine what the Cobra represents. The "Diamond Edition Carbon Fiber Shelby Cobra Race Car" is a limited edition masterpiece designed to celebrate the Cobra's 60th anniversary. This time, however, the story unfolds with a carbon fiber symphony that carries a tune of power and precision.
The carbon fiber body, weighing a mere 88 lbs (39.9 kg), adorns the chassis like a tailored suit, hinting at the upcoming performance spectacle. With an estimated total weight of under 2,300 lbs (1,043 kg), the Diamond Edition promises a dance of agility and acceleration. Now that’s not a whole lot lighter than the original, but where the original made between 400 and 485Hp from its 7.0 V8 this one uses a smaller engine, but this smaller 5.0 V8 is a little angrier
The heart beneath the carbon-fiber-clad hood is a 5.0-liter Gen3 Coyote Aluminator engine from Ford Racing, adorned with a Magnuson supercharger and a MoTeC engine management system. This ensemble orchestrates an awe-inspiring symphony, producing a staggering 1,000 horsepower and 1016nm of torque. Mated to a six-speed manual transmission from Tremec, this Cobra unleashes a 0-60 mph sprint in around 3.9 seconds, surging forward with raw energy. Now before we talk top speed I do have to say the original did they same sprint in 4.2 seconds back in the 60s. which goes to show how crazy that car was. Anyways The carbon cobra tops out at a top speed of approximately 190 mph (306 km/h). So it is no slouch
But this car isn’t just about speed, it catapults the Cobra's legacy into the future. The cantilever suspension, graced with billet components, offers a glimpse into racing engineering, while transmission, oil, and differential coolers underline its performance focussed engineering. Forged wheels and a Shelby 6PF 4PR braking system by BAER ensure uncompromised control and stopping power. In other words this thing should be a joy in the corners.
Now I hear you, how much would one of these cost to own. Well Only ten of these masterpieces will grace the roads, each priced at a staggering $1.2 million. Yet, the price tag is not the only jaw dropping detail. The Diamond Edition, which as I said goes for over a million dollars isn’t even street legal. So you can only legally drive it on a race track, you could probably take it offroad without braking any laws, but I wouldn’t recommend it.
Anyways Classic Recreations CEO Jeff Stone's vision and the whole idea behind the car was - "What car would Carroll build with today's technology?" - That being said at the end of the video ill ask you, is this was he would have build with todays technology if he had to reimagine the cobra?

    I don’t think it’s what he would’ve made using today’s technology.
    Still my dream car.

That's a ridiculous price. A 100% aluminum body Kirkham weighs about the same at 1/4 the price with the same drivetrain or better.

They have been talking about a carbon cobra for over 10 yrs. Any real Shelby enthustist would covet the aluminum version. No racer would risk 1.2 mil. So it leaves the collector / art buyers. I dont really think this car lives up to that quality. Just look at it closer in slow motion. You will see the defects. So I agree with you. it is way way way too much for a garage queen. give me a driver in fiberglass or aluminum any day.
I bet F5 or Superformance will have a carbon version before long anyway.

Too bad it's not street legal. But the lucky owners must be on taking it to the track, else I won't understand the world anymore.
    Cheers!

what makes it not street legal? it looks like it has headlights, brake lights, turn signals and a windscreen which makes it street legal

Don't even need a windscreen in the UK to pass IVA. But the seatbelt anchor points need to be tested. I don't know if the chassis is carbon - doesn't look like it.

If they aren't making the frame out of carbon fiber - it's a total waste of project.
