I managed a store for a well known (west coast) chocolate candy shop and our district manager always pressed me to cut the night shift to one person. I always refused. Never would I let one person work alone at night. Safety means more than cutting your employee hours for profit. It’s crazy that people are willing to risk someone’s safety. I feel so sorry for all involved.

My wife use to work a late shift at a Supermarket for a few years. I didn’t like her working so late and she parked behind the store. Luckily she was always in company of other male employees when she worked late. I wouldn’t allow her to work alone at any late night store, far too much risk potentially involved.

I worked nights at a convenience store. I had an incident that two men, two separate vehicles at two separate entrances, pulled up and waited until I was to leave. They just stared at me. It was very rural area. Through experience I knew that police wouldn’t get there for at least an hour. I phoned the manager. He drove into the park lot and the other guys got into their cars, I got safely into mine, locked the doors. I am convinced that had I just gone to my car, not phoned and waited, I definitely would not be alive today. One of the vehicles was a white Mercedes panel van, no windows in the back, extra tall ceiling. When the driver paid cash for his fuel, earlier, he had many $100.00 bills in his wallet. His hands shook violently as he handed me the money to pay god his fuel, earlier.

I read that there is a proposed Michigan bill, requested by Jessica’s parents, requiring gas stations and convenience stores that are open between the hours of 11pm and 5am to install and maintain a security camera system or to have at least two employees on shift during these hours. I hope that bill passes! In Florida where I live, security cameras are mandatory but two employees are only required if certain crimes have occurred at the location. Interesting.. I hadn’t really considered what safety precautions are actually mandatory at these late night businesses.

I was 18 and it really shook me. I remember one night when he showed up the night after seeing him in public and trying to hide from him. He said I was really rude for that. I kept my finger on the panic button. Luckily he didn’t do anything. I told my bosses and they told the police and he never came back. I was a manager of a Keva Juice (similar to Jamba Juice) when I was 17. Yeah, a little young, I know but while working there before I was promoted, I had had a few sketchy nights of closing by myself. So when I was promoted I made sure that no one closed alone. We closed at 9 on weekdays and 11 on Friday weekends. I had multiple arguments with the owners as they wanted to cut down on cost and they felt it was wasteful to have two people working. I eventually had to give in but on those days where only one person was working, I would go in and stay with them just to be safe. Even at that young age I knew how dangerous that could be and while I understand wanting to cut overhead cost, it always made me mad that these adults didn’t seem to care.

This is another tragedy that should have been avoided. It has troubled me for years to see young ladies working alone at night in 7-11 stores or gas station mini marts. It is such a red flag fraught with risk that it defies belief that it would even be allowed to take place. My guess is that the lady who waited until Jessica finished her shift that one night feels similarly, and kudos to her for her actions, though regrettably it didn’t prevent the ultimate tragedy. Why anyone would not think circumstances like these could end badly is the real head scratcher here, but it’s heart breaking that it took something like this to bring about a change in the law to prevent others from suffering the same fate. I don’t have a criminal mind, but I can think of many establishments in the vicinity of where I live that are setups for just this kind of crime to occur, and much more needs to be done in the interest of safety to avoid another Jessica happening.

Retail, especially gas stations, now require in BC Canadian LAW that you not work alone. The owners (and large corporations that own gas stations in particular) have no excuse to have a single person working alone. When I ran my own moving company I never went out alone with a truck, after two sketchy experiences brought me into a 1) furniture theft ring, ;and 2) a drug collection problem. It's not worth your life. Jessica obviously was already getting really bad vibes from this guy. It's unfortunate she didn't call the owners, (or feel she had that as an option) to get them to come in and cover. BUT the owners did a DRIVE BY???? They will have to LIVE with this for the rest of their lives.

It’s particularly distressing when people’s lives are at risk due to dangers in the workplace. Often people are aware of the risks but they can’t afford quitting their jobs.
Regarding risks in the workplace, during this pandemic, many workers lost their lives by simply going to work and doing the right thing.

I met Jeff Willis several years before this. Awkward and creepy! Yes!!

Telling and showing your cousin? Duh! All he needed was the police to get a whiff of him and he convicted himself. If we can be grateful for one thing in this terrible tragedy, it’s that a lot of the people who commit these crimes are too narcissistic to realize they aren’t smart enough to pull it off long term.

Nice analysis Dr. Grande. This was a case very close to us. Law enforcement never stopped working this case, though sadly her body was never found. You usually get the details correct, just a few small things: Her name is pronounced Hear-inga, accent on the first syllable. The case occurred in Norton Shores, Michigan on the west coast of the state, on Lake Michigan. (North Shores is a town on the east coast, on Lake Erie.) And despite years of effort by her family and others to pass Jessica's Law, it has not yet passed the legislature primarily due to small businesses' cost concerns.

Dr. Grande, would you please consider doing a video on missing person Michele Harris? She was a mom living in upstate NY and going through a divorce when she went missing on the evening of Sep 11, 2001. It’s been suggested that someone may have decided to take advantage of the fact that many police / authorities were busy during the chaos of the 9/11 attacks in NY that day; police probably had significantly fewer resources to investigate potential foul play if it happened in the same state and on the same day as 9/11. If I stubbed my toe it was because of the negativity and I then I would get angry and curse loudly and because I'm clean now and a lot of the internal insanity is gone I'm realizing that one moment does not define me. I love knowing that if my day was kinda crappy that I can go to sleep and wake up to a new day. I always try to focus on positivity because my girlfriend of 7 years now, just had out 7yr anniversary September 22nd, is very much an empath and my negativity could really cause her to begin to stress and she's under enough stress because of her job that treats her like crap but she still works doubles and split shifts because her manager can't properly staff the place. While those like Willis prefer lone victims, there are those that have little regard for that. If anyone follows true crime channels, they know that violent crimes occur in businesses with 3,4, or more people working.
It seems that Ms. Heeringa had reason to mistrust her future abductor yet made no effort to convey this to anyone. That can no longer be acceptable. If you believe someone at your place of work is a problem, speak to someone about it.

I followed this case too, being close to it. It was haunting She was 5'1"" and 110 lbs. No match for a 300 lb nut job. About the Dutch names...if double ee, it's pronounced hear. If single e, double r, it's pronounced hair.

Enjoy your videos a lot. This happens to be my lifelong hometown until just a few years ago. Heads up, its Norton Shores, not North Shore. Just a minor correction for your otherwise usually excellent videos. Keep 'em coming.

I always thought this case was so unsettling. Just being taken like that from your job! Very scary thought. Thankfully he was so disorganized that they were able to catch him before he hurt anyone else! Kudos to the teenager that managed to escape! She undoubtedly helped to save lives of further potential victims! Thank you for your analysis Dr Grande!💖💖

A petite young girl working all alone late at night in an unpopulated area at a business with no CCTV? Practically an open invitation to sick assholes like Willis. A major gas station chain thinks it's too costly for CCTV though so obviously that takes precedence over even the most basic of worker safety measures. America. What a country.

Hi Dr. Grande, Yes, I believe that prison guard was also thinking that he could get those three square meals everyday as well. What a deal! Wow. Sad story. It’s sad they didn’t have someone working with her. And bad that they didn’t have cameras up. Enjoyed the video Dr. Grande.

According to the FBI, they figure there are at least 25-50 serial killers active in the U.S.
Some statistics say the average person will walk past 36 murderers (not necessarily serial) during the average lifespan.
Be like that 16 year old who managed to escape everyone. Stay calm, and think fast.

What's worse, think about how many serial farters are roaming the stores in search of victims!
All I can say is from their a** to your nose!
      LOOKOUT! 🌬👃😳🥴 👀

A family friend's daughter, late night 7-11 cashier, was kidnapped and murdered several years ago. I don't know if it is a Federal law, but it should be, late night cashiers/clerks must ALWAYS have a partner and video cameras installed in and out. Those two basic improvements save lives. Our poorest paid are often the least protected by their employers. Thank you for your analysis. Have a good day and take a nap.
