The Man Behind California's "3 Strikes Law" - Douglas Walker

  • เผยแพร่เมื่อ 22 พ.ค. 2023
  • In the late 1990's, newspapers were filled with stories of men and women in California who were sentenced to life in prison for misdemeanor offenses. The most well known case involved Jerry Williams, the man who received 25-years-to-life for stealing a single slice of pizza. These strict prison sentences came because of the "3 Strikes and You're Out" law. A law that was pushed to California voters in 1994 because of a man named Douglas Walker.

I remember when two kids beat and robbed a pizza delivery guy near me. Instead of prison they were sent to go camp on an Alaskan island. They played video games, rode 4 wheelers, shot rifles and hunted for sport, drank liquor and booze, were visited frequently by family and friends, what a joke. Shoulda put them boys in a prison cell.

It’s crazy how many lifers are clogging up the prison system with light bogus crimes like I knew a guy who got life for walking out the store with a pack of steaks, was chased he then punched the loss prevention officer and was given life now the taxpayers will take care of him for probably the rest of his life I believe that strikes should be serious crime like child predators ,murderers and bank robbers not a guy who stole a pizza or a steak!!

What it had the most to do with was super-rich people and their companies/corporations making massive investments in the privatised prison system, and at the same time making massive contributions to 'law and order' lobbying groups who were pressuring legislators to pass more and more strict and less and less just laws, like '3 strikes and you're out' law. This happened not just in California, but all over the US. It's a good way to make money if you don't care about the utterly destructive effects it has on your society.

Like Joe Biden's 1994 crime bill that sentenced poor people to an automatic 5 years in prison and forfeiture of all their money and assets including cars etc just for having a tiny piece of crack or residue. While people busted with small amounts of powdered cocaine got rehab and probation.
He gave his children millions of dollars and high paying jobs when they smoke crack tho.

And the shame of it all is; the law allows rapists, child molesters, and child trafficking to only receive a slap on the hand. The law will easily put away gang members from hanging around their neighborhood (even if they live there) or from hanging out with a child hood friend who happened to live in the same neighborhood for just being together. But, overt their eyes when a sex offender lives in a school zone or hangs around zones he isnt suppose to be near. It goes to show how many people in the judicial system are into that kind of thing. Epsteins Island is still very much in existence. Its just on land that continues to stretch around the globe even more blatantly.

My suggestion for balancing the three strikes law. For the intended purpose of incarcerating individual who are in fact career criminals but also sparing those who really are just making a mistake and don't deserve the third strike.
I say if the crime will end up being 7 years sentence or more you can give them the strike. If your willing to do a crime of that level you deserve whatever you get, that's not a petty crime sentence, that's not a fist fight, that's not petty theft, that's not fraud, it's not possession of narcotics with intend to consume. It would be like aggravated battery, assault with a deadly weapon with intent too cause bodily harm. Possession of a large quantity of narcotics with intend too sell.
I guess a lot of this depends on state your in but I think generally I'm on point with the punishment times, and quality of crimes that would justify a third strike.
Everyone deserves a second shit even third chance under some circumstances some conditions people live in deserves even more depending on the upbringing. But nobody should get so many chances they are a menace too their community. Nobody should lose a child for your second or third chance.
I tried too think of something neither side would really argue with

And you punch that or push him back a little to hard and he slips and cracks his head on the concrete. You sir would be charged with manslaughter and that is a crime that would lead you to getting a strike.
I've never been in trouble I've never had a strike but I've seen normal people minding their own business end up in trouble because trouble came to them. • @jacksonbauer5199
    @jacksonbauer5199 ปีที่แล้ว +3

There’s a difference between aggravated robbery and shoplifting… The law should never have applied to petty misdemeanors. The people saying “well just don’t break the law” have zero understanding of how difficult life can be for some people. If a homeless person steals food and your response is “lock them up”, you desperately need psychiatric treatment (because you are probably a sociopath). I’m not saying that there shouldn’t be consequences for minor crimes, but life in prison for bad checks or petty theft is borderline retarded.

Doesn’t matter if you get 25yrs for a low level crime you had chances you committed 1 bad crime went to prison and came out and didn’t change you get your 2nd strike for another bad crime you to prison you now have another chance to change but no you decide to commit a low lvl crime and get 25yrs then too bad you had several chances to change so now deal with it you’re an adult you
    Knew the consequences

Inmates would complain about the 3 strikes law. I'd ask them, "Do you have kids?". If they said yes, I'd ask them, "How many chances to you give your kids if they misbehave? One, two or three? They are kids and as such, they're stupid. You are an adult and you already had 2 chances. How stupid are you to break the law again knowing you'd be facing a third strike? So I don't feel sorry for you!".

Sell drugs 3x u go for life
Sell drugs 2x at age 18-20...Dui... At 40.... U face life
      It's not only violent crime
And to be convicted of a violent crime they don't even need a victim

Rather than prison for drug users stealing and petty crime the should be made a labor camp service , minimum 1 year , hard labor for at least 8hrs a day then rehab after that ,not a soft rehab where they get coddled but somewhere you really gotta put in work. all in a controlled environment , pay for their labor should be reduced to pay for all their housing and needs while serving their 1 year and remaining monies could be put on a tab where they can purchase things from commissary like candy bars etc , give them a taste of what it’s like to work in the real world while in a structured environment. I think a lot of addicts get so lost they just give up and the thought of working seems so out of reach. I like to think most people want to have some purpose in life and working is a good way to achieve that. Now violent criminals should go to prison and it should be tough , a place that isn’t a hangout , it should be a war zone so that people would opt for the work camps and the rest can stab and rape eachother. Private prison systems have made prison a for profit industry and the tax payers are footing the bill, it costs over 100k a year to have someone in prison where they contribute nothing , some families in calfornia work 2 incomes 40+hrs each a week to barely make 60-70k and they have to raise a family on that, how the fuck is California raping it’s citizens like that? This is why so many drug offenses are just tickets now , theft is insane because there’s no penalty and bums are everywhere. California politicians are like abusive parents , the 3 strike law is like the parent who never tries to parent but instead blows up and yells at you or hits you when you make a mistake. The other what we have now is like the vacant parent who is not concerned , blank , on Xanax checked out self consumed. 3 strike is a good law but should be for violet crime though I also believe in the death penalty unfortunately even with all the modern forensics like dna cameras gps it takes way too long to execute people that are 99.999999999% guilty and instead drags things out so it costs so much Money they abandoned it. Dont think the leftist democrats care about people here in California by not putting them in prison and abolishing death penalty, they don’t , it’s money that’s it , if they cared they would make work camps not pass out needles and crack pipes, they would have labor camps not tickets where people just crumple them up

WHILE IT'S ABSURD TO IMPRISON SOMEONE FOR STEALING A PIZZA 🍕 SLICE, (OR A $130 JACKET), I have to wonder why someone with two strikescagainst them already would still steal the slice!
It seems anyone with an above room temperature IQ who had two strikes would be walking on eggshells, staying on the "straight and narrow", and avoid ANYTHING that might come even kinda-sorta close to breaking a law.
So, partbofvthe problem is with the criminals! (DUHH!)

They need to abolish the 3 strikes Law , the reason is a lot of people don’t really know how the district attorney manipulate the law and stretch it to the point it damn near breaking the law that it was intended for district attorney will give you 2 strikes for your first offense with no prison time they call it a turn around you go to prison to get a number and come right back to county less then 2 months tops
