- The entire Metallica catalogue has been reviewed, one song at a time with every song and album rated to come up with the definitive ranking of all the albums as well as choosing 14 great songs by them to go with this video.
I have been a long time fan of most of their work, especially the 80's era . Even though I knew every album well a fresh listen was the best way to do this so I re-listened to the entire Metallica catalogue one song at a time before doing this.

The first 6 albums are masterpieces. And the rest are good solid albums. I love Metallica! It's hard to rank their albums for me.

Honestly I don't hate any of their albums,I love AJFA the most with it's cold and powerful tone and it's theme about Justice for all.

I think ...And Justice for all has great songs, but poor recording quality. They should have rerecord it with Metallica album quality. But I like AJFA just like it is, but wouldn't put in #1. I still would rate MoP, Metallica and Load above it.
The fact Orion isn't a 10 blows my mind.
9.5 is pretty damn close to a 10. I have ranked 9 different bands albums and Orion is the highest ranked instrumental….it’s rated very high

@NM Ngl that’s a crazy take, One is a clear 10 that not even haters disagree with, it shows off every aspect of the band, great writing, great riffs, amazing solos, drum work is really good, bass is good, it has ups and downs. Yes it’s an opinion, but unless you hate the genre of metal or are looking for reactions, I can officially categorize this specific opinion as stupid.

I was a very late 90's kid and my dad had every album in rotation when he'd play Metallica and while objectively the thrash days are absolutely killer, I'm really drawn to their hard/heavy rock sound. People might not like the change and they don't think it's genuine but I do and I think they do it just as well
Monstrous effort to do this and kudos to you. With that being said, the fact that you rated Escape and Sad But True the same is absolutely ludicrous.
Also, whether you have a bias for the thrashier stuff or not, Wherever I May Roam is a perfect song. The godly mix, the middle eastern vibe, the riff, the solo, the vocals - all perfect for what they are. 9/10 is unreasonable IMO.
You need to remember these are my personal ratings, saying certain songs shouldn't be rated an 8 is the wrong way to look at things. As the great man Pete Pardo says we all hear things differently. You can say you think Wherever May Roam is a 10 without saying me giving it a 9 is wrong. A 9 is a very high rating anyway, but thanks for showing some interest.
@@danielsultimaterockmetal9363 I think you missed my point. It's not about whether you enjoy the song or not, clearly a 9 is a good rating, it's what specifically would make it not a 10 from anything other than a biased perspective. I might not like pop music, but there are going to be songs that have a catchy hook, chorus, lyrics, etc - that even if they don't match my tastes I can recognize them as perfect for what they are (take Blinding Lights by the Weekend for example).
Is Roam my favourite Metallica song? Not by a long shot. It's not a thrash song and it's not trying to be. But for what it is, it's essentially flawless.
Some songs in the Metallica catalog (take the stuff on AJFA or DM for example) have obvious gripes, whether it be the mix or the actual song writing and structuring, that make for obvious critiques. Roam just doesn't have that. It's a perfect song, though IMO not the perfect METALLICA song.

Kill em All 9? Were you drunk?
@@JCStorm76 the album has many great songs (four horsemen, whiplash, anesthesia, seek n destroy, phantom lord), but none of them stand out AS much to me as certain songs from all other albums, save St. Anger. Apart from those pieces, the album is pure aggression and doesn't even have a calm breakdown in between (some may consider this as a positive). This, combined with the aforementioned point, barely drops it half a point below Hardwired, Load and Reload (looking back, it honestly could be tied with Hardwired).
Don't think that 9 is a bad position. I still really like the album.
@@emolga3147 It’s easily one of their best. In fact it’s my favourite. Objectively I realise it’s not the very best but anything lower than top 5 is wrong I feel. Hardwired? I wouldn’t even mention that album in the same breath as an album like Kill em all. One album is iconic, a minor classic even, the other is just average. Even Death Magnetic is better than Hardwired
@@JCStorm76 yeah that's fair. Hardwired's first disc is amazing in my opinion, but the second one is horrible, apart from Spit Out the Bone. I slightly adjusted the list.
On the topic of Death Magnetic, I think it's an incredible album with some of their best songwriting, ruined by production. The Guitar Hero audio files have the same mixing, but the volume hasn't been turned up ridiculously high, so the songs sound much better.

Beyond Magnetic is an EP, not an album, but hey I’m not complaining. Glad such a good set of songs is getting recognized by at least a few people.
@@coconutmango4422 well, if there were more songs on the ep then it would be more solid, therefore ranking slightly higher. i love rebel of babylon, hate train, and just a bullet away. hell and back is decent, but not what i’m looking for. yes, hell and back is probably the most completed-sounding song on the ep, but it is plain. the song reminds me of cyanide. maybe they slightly changed the riffs from cyanide and used them in hell and back.
St. Anger is way underrated.
I don’t think it is. It isn’t only coming last in the Metallica ranking. I have now done ratings for 151 albums from 11 bands and St Anger is not above any of them.
@@danielsultimaterockmetal9363 it has flaws but not more than, f.e. death magnetic. Snare sound is pretty much whole problem and, in some, lyrics. There is a rerecorded version of it and it sounds amazing. Also when played live

Songs like All Nightmare Long and Hardwired wouldn't make the cut on albums like Lightning, Puppets or Justice. It's ok for you to like them more though, we all hear things differently.
Personally my favourite album is Ride the lightning but im the person that likes st.anger its very powerful and ANGRY.
I also like garage ink. A lot of the covers were not bad.

Good video - not a task I would attempt - I'd be forever at it! As for my input, I probably would have rated Low Man's Lyric and St Anger (song) higher. In agreement with The Day That Never Comes as the best track on Death Magnetic. I always thought that song was underrated but maybe it's not.....

Love the breakdown! But to give My Friend of Misery an 8? You must be high. That's a 10. Also, every song on Master of Puppets is 10...no hate, just sharing my opinions as well :) haha Master of Puppets and the Black Album are very rare examples in any genre of music where every song is 10/10. And for it to be done by the same band twice? This is why they are legends.
Metallica is one of the few bands ever to have at least one timeless hit on every single album (cept St. Anger) haha

So Where the Wild Things Are and Halo on Fire are both better than Fight Fire with Fire, Battery and Damage Inc? Now I have seen everything.
Those three songs got 8.5/10 which is about right IMO, if you think they rate higher that’s fine, as the great man Pete Pardo says we all hear things differently

Respect the opinions but damn that death magnetic tiers made me tear up. Should be way higher than putting on a tier over st anger.
Big improvement over St Anger but for the most part Death Magnetic doesn’t have the quality of songs of those earlier albums
So, Iron Maiden have 17 studio albums at a rating of 8.68, which is great. An extra 7 quality albums, lol

Interesting since I consider Justice and Puppets a double masterpiece and I always have trouble deciding between Load and Death Magnetic, as well as the Black Album and Lightning.

Please rerelease St. Anger without the snare so we can properly critique it.
Good ranking, even with the snare fixed it won’t make much difference. The songs just aren’t at a high level in all aspects.

The first four albums are incredible, then they basically became a different band and just started sucking. Death Magnetic is pretty good, though. Really glad I had Slayer and Pantera in the 90's.

My favorite overall album has to be ride the lightning, while being only fifteen

Death Magnetic is far and away better than Load, Reload and Hardwired. IMO it's on par or better than the Black Album. Top 4 are solid though.
