LA fires burn out-of-control as thousands evacuated from homes | BBC News

- Wildfires are ripping across parts of Los Angeles, leading to at least five deaths and burning down hundreds of buildings.
Nearly 180,000 LA residents have been told to evacuate and authorities say they're doing what they can to ascertain if any more people have died.
The Palisades fire, one of the five still burning, is thought to be "one of the worst natural disasters in the history of LA" - it now covers covering 17,200 acres and is 0% contained.
Officials are hopeful that the "tide is turning", with LA's city fire chief saying winds - which helped the fires to spread - are forecast to "subside" today, and aerial firefighting allowed to resume.

Born and raised Californian here. This type of fire is *not* surprising in California. What is surprising is the dearth of preparedness information. Folks have been talking about 100ft (30 meters) of defensible space for a few years now. No. That is not enough. It has always been 500 ft (150-160 meters) of defensible space. This type of fire is the reason for this. Yes, the Santa Ana winds are at play in this episode, but the thing folks need to realize is that these types of fires can also create their own winds. Where is the defensible space? What on earth!? This is utterly heartbreaking.
These are neighborhoods not ranches in Idaho .... most of the houses are far closer to each other than 500 feet -- and each house is flammable. Did you watch any of the local coverage of reporters being peppered with burning embers in 70 and 80 mile an hour winds? Defensible space is meaningless in this situation as embers are blowing hundreds and thousands of meters in the wind. Defensible spaces are wise in normal conditions, but not going to succeed in hurricane force winds.
Los Angeles should have been spending much more money on firefighters, placing water tanks at higher elevations above neighborhoods, and planning for worst case scenarios -- all of which they avoided doing. The Mayor cut the Fire Department budget by $18 million just 7 months ago -- despite warnings from the Fire Department that this would hamper them in an emergency.
@randygram9310 What you are saying is mostly accurate, yes, and quite well informed. Only one addition: the 500 ft of defensible space is not per structure, it's per subdivision. It's not intended to be around only one structure, it's a set of structures that would be defensible by the 500 ft. In CA fires, there is always a wild card. In this situation, it's the winds, in other years or episodes, it was something different. There are always wild cards specific to each event like this. A few years back, the Regan National Library was saved when most things in that particular fire were burned to the ground. The Regan National Library had 500 ft of defensible space around it. The defensible space may not save all structures, but it gives a chance to save many. In CA, you never turn your back to the waves, you have 500 ft of defensible space, never turn over a rock in the desert because of rattle snakes, and don't camp in a dry wash because of flood danger.
how the heck is 20 degree celsius weather hot enough to start fires like that?

Your health is your wealth, glad to hear so many people got out with there lives.
Even photos can live in your hearts
As someone who lost their house in 1982 in South Australia, my heart goes out to LA residents. Loss of things like photos, videos, children’s baby clothing, pets etc, and your home, is not fun. Our chicken coup survived, but nothing else. We were left with the clothes we were warning. Mum managed to grab the family photos and the cat and dog, then me and my two sisters walking home from the school bus, and made it to the football oval as the main front went through. I know there will be a big fallout with the LA fires, but even if there had been water, these fires are so big that it may not have made much difference anyway. My sister and brother in law who have recently built a house in rural South Australia have to keep a certain amount of water in their water tank for the CFA to use in case of fire. Also, we have building regulations in bush fire prone areas, but that is for new houses and doesn’t apply to old ones. In Victoria where I now live, whole towns have been decimated by fire. I worry for my brother and sister in the summer as they both live in rural properties, and when I see houses in the country side in summer, I automatically do a fire safety check in my head. I was 12 when we lost our house in 1983, and while typing this I am becoming quite tearful. I have nothing but admiration for my parents who still had three daughters at school and a brother at university who managed to rebuild their, and our lives. It took years. A house, whether big or small is more than bricks and mortar.
Very interesting account of your experiences! Glad your family made it safely through (did the chickens in their coup?) -- and stay safe in Australia going forward.
My heart goes out to them. Poor people...but why do Americans keep building highly flammable wooden houses instead of brick ( or stone) and mortar like us in Europe.? And their wooden houses are more expensive than ours too. I have never understood that.. Anyhow.. poor people :(
It even burnt the bricks with that high heat.
@@janet8418wooden houses spread fire
I agree that our houses are very flammable, and that they may be more expensive to build than your brick houses.
But California is expensive compared to the rest of the world. Wood is fast, cheap and holds up to earthquakes, that’s why we use it.
What we should really do is coat our wooden frames in fire resistant materials, among other things
Earthquakes!!!!! Bricks and stone dont do good at all against Earthquakes which california is known for
I think its because LA is in an earthquake zone. Apparently wooden buildings absorb the quakes better
There's not a fire department in the world that can overcome 90+ mile an hour winds during a drought. When they tried to use so many hydrants at the same time the water pressure dropped. To many factors at once...
The most significant factor still is the lack of preparation and policies made by your idiot governor.
