A Proposed Minimum Wage of N100,000 is Unrealistic and Unacceptable - Upah

  • The figures are manifestly clear. At the time we did N30,000, inflation rate was at 11.4%, today inflation rate is at 33.7%, the exchange rate today is N1600 to the dollar, interest rate and customs' duty and tariff as well as energy tariffs have more than tripled. A N100,000 minimum wage will come to nothing, N615,000 is modest enough to sustain the average worker.

Nigerians are quick to say the NLC is asking for too much on behalf of the Nigerian workers. But the same Nigerians watch as the least political office of a ward councilor earns over 400k in salaries and allowances monthly for doing almost nothing. Let’s not even go higher to other political offices. The Nigerian workers are grossly underpaid.

100k is a SLAVE WAGE. It is a direct insult to all Nigerian workers. It is government's way of telling all Nigerians "we know you are starving, but you are fools who will accept anything".

@RufaiUseni Do you know how much your senators are earning? N29.48million per month, which is still around 1/50th of the 615k that Labour is asking for. Tell me the unfairness in that demand. A Nigerian senator earns 265% of what an American senator is earning per month, you can make your research. And you ask the man not to compare us to America, when our politicians are even living larger than the American politicians, without a pity to the economic size.
A Nigerian senator earn a hardship allowance, wardrobe allowance, furniture allowance, all these are aside their basic salaries, I mean, how is 615k too much for them to pay, if they can pay themselves more than the American politicians.

    In 2014, with $1 = N154, a minimum wage of N19,800 would be equivalent to N192,855 today at $1 = N1500. Similarly, N30,000 in 2014 translates to N292,215 today, while N615,000 today matches N63,140 in 2014.

The simple issue is that people purchasing power is badly affected but not to the extent of 615k. I think between #100k-#150k is fine. The inflation has eroded people's purchasing power. The increase in purchasing power of people will change the reality and stimulate growth. The man is right here but 615k is not a reality. But labour should stay on the neck of thieves that steal our collective patrimony. The politicians are the bane of the country development. Social engineering is a way to go. When faced with challenges, leaders shouldn't make excuses or explain why those challenges can't be met. Their role is to brainstorm, find solutions, and figure out how to overcome these challenges. The National Labour Congress has proposed a new minimum wage. It’s not leadership’s job to say it’s too much. Instead, they should address the problem by asking, "How can we solve this issue?" It’s not just about money; it’s about addressing economic hardship. True leadership involves finding solutions, not dismissing demands as unreasonable. Claiming something is impossible is a sign of incompetence.

I don't know why this is so difficult to understand NLC. Cut down on the cost of governance, use the money to pay workers and then demand productivity from the workers and economy will grow. This in turn will spill over in time to SME. Like the guy said in the interview, there is a law that detailed who fall into the category of paying the minimum wage. I stand with the NLC. Productivity brings wealth.

Obviously, the stance on the subject discussed may be unrealistic, as highlighted by Rufai and the lady. But the way and manner the questions are put to Mr. Upah were not logical and practical enough. Mr. Upah emphasized with experience fundamental viewpoints, which may not be feasible with the deplorable economic state of Nigeria. However, Mr. Rufai, as much as he is such a great guy and factual, should learn some modesty and logic of interviewing his guests without unnecessarily agitating or bringing them down, mostly his tone of voice and demeanour are unwarranted of his noble profession.

  • @mikeANDZA
    @mikeANDZA 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

Rufai changed the context of the discussion and in the process completely goofed, shooting himself in the foot.
It is very absurd probing your guest in such a rude manner by ignorantly asking him how he would be able to to implement a 615,000 minimum wage he was an employer.
His job on the show was to offer insights based on existing facts, and not based on hypothetical facts.
If the law provides that 615,000 is the minimum wage, then yes, if he is an employer he is mandated to comply with that provision of the law, regardless of whether or not he can be able to pay, which is not Rufai's business by the way.
Baba earlier mentioned, the failure to implement the 30,000 minimum wage is not as a result of paucity of funds, but out of wilful neglect to to do so, and even provided the FAAC statistics to back that up.
Maybe Rufai is not aware the minimum wage Act is not applicable to every category of work force, or an establishment with less than 25 persons workforce, or that it is due for review after every 5years.
Rufai should humble himself and allow intelligent baba to school him.

Simple economists will tell you that cutting government costs will not only save money but can divert some of that savings to Labor.
Senate and house of Dissembly should not earn their current salary. Labor unions should instead mount a serious protests at Abuja.

No employer especially in the private sector and manufacturing will pay 615 k with out passing this to the consumer as increase in price salaries are part of labour costs . Let’s not talk about the civil service which is not productive and Steve government who cannot even pay the current minimum wage . An America? No comparison we need to move away from that mindset

Do you know how much your senators are earning? N29.48million per month, which is still around 1/50th of the 615k that Labour is asking for. Tell me the unfairness of that demand. A Nigerian senator earns 265% of what an American senator is earning per month, you can make your research. A Nigerian senator earn a hardship allowance, ward robe allowance, furniture allowance, all these are aside the basic salaries, I mean, are we not our problems?
