    Please note the MINI Cooper SE is NOT 4000 lbs as stated in the clip at 3:05. It is ~ 3009 lbs a significant error on this clip.

      The website lists the Mini Cooper as about 3700 lb. www.miniusa.com/model/hardtop/specs.html

      For sure it looks like curb weight was confused with gross weight capability (including passengers) as the regular hardtop has a GVWR of around 3700 lbs. according to its sticker

    Why are people trying to draw a comparison to Tesla’s? Why, just because it’s an EV?? That’s like comparing an Elantra and an M5 just because they both have gasoline engines.

    • @MikeCalhoun
      @MikeCalhoun 4 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      I don't know either. At $20-23k and 110 mile range, this falls into a good price/range for a lot of people. For people that drive more than that per day, then this car is just not for you. It's crazy how angry people get when a car isn't made for everyone.

    • @zanvoy6848
      @zanvoy6848 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      People are comparing it Tesla because it's one of the few electric vehicles on the market that is cheaper than the model 3. So if somebody is shopping for an electric vehicle they want to know the trade-offs they're making for the lower price point

      @A M More like $17k more (for a Model 3 SR+) since the MINI is eligible for the $7,500 Federal tax credit. Also, they are completely different cars and the MINI's build quality and finishings are better than the Tesla's.

    • @dansburns
      @dansburns 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @A M Mini’s problems have been engine and transmission. This car has neither and the i3 EV power train is reliable and proven. I personally don’t like the way a Tesla looks and I don’t like it’s interior either. It’s nice to have choices. For a runabout city car, this thing is perfect.

  • @davidc-l9174

    Great video, as always. FYI, the regular Cooper S weighs about 2,800 lbs. not 3,700 LOL. The SE is about 3,100 lbs. Also, the regular S offers only a 7-speed DCT right now, but a 6-speed manual is returning starting with March production.

    Finally an affordable EV that has high build quality inside and out, looks good and is (apparently) also very fun to drive. Those 145 or 110 miles are plenty enough for me.

    • @MikeCer93
      @MikeCer93 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Exactly, all those people claiming that the Tesla's self driving experience is the best for the industry doesn't understand that you can use an electric / hybrid Uber if you just don't like to drive. Tesla's terrible quality assamble and cheap interior means that all their price is for the self driving system and the batteries. A small city car that allows you tu have fun is needed

    • @johnlee5307

      I’ve had mine for a month Anna with daily free charging at work and a 60 mile round trip commute, I couldn’t be happier. The $7500 federal tax credit makes this the perfect second car. I’ve driven all the Tesla’s and I don’t care their design and quality.. the self driving thing is overrated as well as you still have to pay attention. With one pedal driving in the Mini SE it’s nearly same level of driver’s engagement.

    "Mini claims 110 miles is plenty of range for a car like this." 110 miles of stated range means real world is closer to 80. BMW pulled this garbage with the original i3 claiming it had 83 miles of range when it was really 62. This is absurd.

    • @darrengriffith9680
      @darrengriffith9680 4 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      I think they are being realistic with the range. For example, my fiat 500e has a lifetime average of 4kwh per mile. With 20kw available to access in it it gets 80 miles or so. With the mini, it has 29kw available. Assuming it's at least as efficient as my 500 that equals 116 average, which seems doable. Still not great mind you.

    Lots of comments here complaining about the range. What many people don't seem to realize are the constraints imposed by current battery technology. Roughly speaking, every 1 mile increase in range adds 7 lbs to the weight of a car, occupies an additional 50 cubic inches, and costs an additional $30. Thus, all else being equal to increase the range from approximately 100 miles to, say, 300 miles would require a battery weighing 1400 lbs more, taking up an additional 5 cubic feet, and costing an additional $6000. It can certainly be done, but you wouldn't have a MINI, you'd have something heavier, bigger, and more expensive (unless you cut corners elsewhere and/or sold the vehicle at a loss, e.g., the Chevy Bolt).

    Hey there… I’m at Bmw/manage Genius and I just wanted to correct something you have in your stats there… The mini Cooper S gas powered car range is between 2824 and 3018 lbs depending on options... not 3800lbs. And the SE is only 3158lbs... Call considering the platform like you said is shared with other minis on the UKL1 platformThat means that it was retrofitted onto the chassis… I think you might be confusing the mini SE with the Mini Countryman SE ALL4 which is 3719lb... As an owner of both plug-in hybrid and Bev minis as well as it being my job to know those kind of facts I feel compelled to point out the mistake… Otherwise great video

  • @TaylorMMontgomery
    @TaylorMMontgomery 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    We've got to get people educated about range and "range anxiety"... Electric cars will never be like gas cars. They are completely different. Most people only drive 30 or 40 miles a day... So a 200 or 300 mile range is really not needed for most. A longer range also means bigger battery which takes longer to fully charge.

  • @Thoughmuchistaken
    @Thoughmuchistaken 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    If I had to guess I imagine BMW couldn't fit the larger batteries from the current i3 into the existing Mini platform, and they probably wanted to keep the price down. For the right buyer this thing could be a great car.

      @Gilamath. 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The car is meant largely for city driving. Don’t forget that electric cars’ instant torque means that they have a much more even power curve, meaning that the 0-35 or the 25-35 on this car (which is what most acceleration on this car will be) is much better than most cars out there. This is a zippy little car, and considering how easy these are to park while still having a roomy interior, Minis end up being great city cars. An electric Mini will likely be the best fit yet for city roads

      It's not a rebate, it's a tax credit (so you have to pay at least that much in federal taxes to benefit from the full amount). Also, it applies to the first 200,000 electrified vehicles sold by a manufacturer. So, while Tesla and GM (thanks to the Volt) have burned through their allotment, Mini still has a long, long, LONG way to go.

    I honestly don’t think these will sell very well. Just to small and a lot of money and very poor range compared to other electric cars especially Tesla . They should’ve done a clubman electric first but I still really like this all electric mini. Very unique and looking forward to what they bring in the future.

    This reviewer somehow doesn't know that when a brand retrofits an ICE car, as opposed to making an EV from the ground up, there is very limited space to put enough batteries in order to get up in the 200+ mile range like he's suggesting to Mini. 15:59

  • @_Randwulf
    @_Randwulf 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    At 4000 pounds already, it would be almost 5000 pounds to get it over 150 miles of true range and for the extra battery required, it would have to be longer which wouldn't be a bad thing for the rear passengers... 👍😎

    110 miles, this car is 40,000$Cad that’s insane, either drop the the price or boost range, doubt they’re gonna be able to sell this car, too bad cause it’s cute I’d buy if they improved either of those things

    In the EU this thing is up against a trio of French "Superminis" in the same class: the Renault Zoe, the Peugeot e-208 and the Opel/Vauxhall Corsa E. The ranges on those? 240 (ish) and 209 for both the others.
    I just don't get it. Sure, the Mini will handle better than any of them by a long chalk but there's simply no excuse for having HALF the range of the Zoe in that segment.
    As a co-driver of a 2017 Leaf (wife's) with the 30KWh battery, which does around 110 miles, I can tell you right now that, while usable, it's not really enough. 200 miles should be the minimum in 2020.

    After all the specs, I have a few questions. Why did they make this? Who's buying this as their first car or second car? It weighs 3700lbs, 110 mile range, and can take up to 24 hours to charge. BMW has tech that can definitely improve these specs but they give us this. 🤔

    • @insightman
      @insightman 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They give us this for a lower price than the MSRP of any other BEV. It weighs 3,153 lbs. My 240-volt EVSE can charge it in 4 hours, should I manage to coast into my garage with zero charge left. They made this car for me, someone who values light weight and cornering above range.

    This would have been nice 5 years ago, but not now. If you are going to be this late to the DR market it better be good and this Mini/BMW is not. Interior looks like crap. Hard touch plastics everywhere. 4,000 pounds Mini with less range is not progression. This is a step backwards

      Ummm because the Model 3 is about $10k more expensive, and that’s just for the base model. And, the MINI is still eligible for the $7,500 Federal tax credit (Tesla doesn’t qualify any longer) which makes the price gap even bigger.
