Please give it a try! It is a lot of fun. People that know how to crochet, find it easier to learn knitting than the ones that don't use their hands to make things. You already have the coordination. It is very creative and knitting projects are not as thick as crocheted ones. Thank you again.
Hey Joanne, I can't begin to tell you how thankful I am for your tutorials, you've raised my interest in knitting. It's so rewarding to be able to see a piece and say that you can actually make it yourself!
I couldn't figure out what I was doing wrong until I found this vid. THANK YOU!!! In a cast on 48 I was not repeating the k 2 tog. at the second set of 24. Your a life saver :o)
Óla 👋 I really love this stitch 😍 in France it is also called feathers and knitting fans « point plumes et eventails » and in Portugal and Brasil it is very well known and appreciated, it’s called there peacock point « ponto pavão » it’s an easy and beautiful stich thanks a lot for sharing and explaining so well 🙏💝 Lots of hugs and kisses for you and Ana from France 👋😘😘😘
This looks so cool. I love the three colors you used (needles, yarn, background) they really help to show what your were doing. You also liked how you showed and explained real well. I just know the basics of knitting but now I'm going to try this, thank you for the video :-)
I love it! Im less tha a newbie but I'll give it a try when I feel more confident with the two needles (I can only crochet so far) Thank you very much for your video!
thank you so much Joanne love watching all your videos you make it easier to understand who to do stitches I haven't learned yet. I find it easier to watch a video than follow a book sometimes the books are hard to understand. If I have any other questions may I ask you? have a wonderful night take care.
Hello MyiDestiny. When you cast off the stitches to the Feather and Fan, you cast off at any knit row on the right side of your work. The wavy effect will be there, the same as at the beginning of the scarf. It does it by itself. No need to do anything special. I am glad you are enjoying it! Be well. Joanne
I will. It's elegant and fun. I believe i have several on the web site. A pink and a blue. Will post a picture of the brown and gold soon. Thank you for watching!
Hello, I love this pattern but by the time I get to the third feather and fan repeat stitch I only have 33 stitches on my needle. What am I doing wrong? Thanks for all your tutorial help. I am a new knitter and they really help me a lot.
Hi Bill. You are probably not knitting some yarn overs. It happens sometimes. Make sure to count your repetitions(stitches) when you are knitting the row following the pattern row. Be well.
Thank you so much you have taught me to Feather / Fan stitch Whoop = ) . I am close to the end of my scarf could you please post a video to cast off the stitches to make the same pattern at the end as the beginning. Thank you so much have a wonderful day
Great! Please count, when you are knitting the yarn over, knit 2 together row. and also the row that follows that one, so you don't miss knitting (or purling) yarn overs.
The 'slopping" gets done automatically. www.joannesweb.com A gorgeous knitted pattern. This is a tutorial for a simple the knitted Feather and Fan Stitch. Pattern Instructions: Fan and Feather Multiple of 18 Row 1.- (RS) *(Knit 2 together) 3 times, (knit one, yarn over) 6 times, (knit 2 together) 3 times. (these last 3, together with the first 3 stitches, will show as knit 2 together 6 times). Row 2 and 3.- Knit. Row 4.- Purl.
Hello Ms Joanne! I really enjoy your wonderful video about this beautiful feather and fan pattern-it's lovely! I understand that 72 stitches will make a shawl...but do you think that 52 stitches will make a shawl? Just curious about this...
I would like to use this to make a mermaid tail blanket. I'm not sure how to decrease it though, because the mermaid tail gets skinnier near the end. So I would have to decrease the number of stitches but I'm not sure how...
The trick would be to have the same amount of stitches you knit 2 together as the number of stitches you yarn over. That is: if you k2 tog 6 times, and then yarn over 6 times, you would k2tog 5 times and yarn over 5 times, at the edges. That way you lose 2 stitches on each side without disturbing the pattern.
I just checked your website and blog. I don't see any photos of the tunic. Just a hat and a bolero. I'd love to know where the pink and blue ones are. I searched your entire website and couldn't find them. Thanks so much!
Hi Joanne. I'm still sort of a beginner and am looking for a pattern to make a baby blanket. Your pattern is lovely and simple. If I wanted a small border and size for a baby blanket, would you add a few knitted rows and a few knits to the ends? Also, how many multiples of 18 would I do for a baby blanket? I'm not experienced enough to modify patterns. Do you have the same pattern but for a baby blanket where I could use theee colors of yarn also? Thanks and enjoy your videos!
I made a small baby blanket for my grandson, with Caron's Simply Soft Yarn. It took 4 balls. I used #9 knitting needles and made 8 repeats. Plus 4 stitches on each side for the border.
Love it, but can you explain how I start to make a triangle scarf with this pattern of feather and fan. I'm an intermediate lol beginner and I've only made scarves . I would like to know do you just add stitches to add increases. Sorry I am hard headed sometimes in getting to understand the process.
Start with 18. As you add 2 stitches on each side by yarning over, you will increase enough to start making another set of 18 on each side. And so on...
hi madam really it is very nice and excellent stitch I learnt by watching ur video u r a very good teacher. please let me know in the pattern row can we do yo. k1 instead of doing k1 yo. please ans does the pattern change if we do like this please give reply. thank u
Hi Joanne, I have been knitting for about ten years. I have three baby blankets I have to make. And I would love to use this pattern for a baby blanket. How should I go about this?
I made it for my grandson, with Caron Simply Soft in Ivory. I made 9 repetitions. Used a #9US circular needle. At the beginning and end, I made 8 rows of garter stitch and also 4 stitches on either side. It turned out really nice.
JoannesWeb thankyou! So I should be looking over all at about 170 stitches. How many inches in height? I just came across your videos yesterday. And watching them and listening to your description on the pattern you reminded me very much of my grandma. From a fellow knitter to another thankyou!
hello mam i have just knit a scarf with this pattern but its curling along the edges.Could you please tell me the solution ? Because i am just a beginner and I love to watch your tutorials, they are very informative for beginners like me. thank you.
This is the stitch that made me want to learn to knit. I can not get the holes right. It comes out too big or too small. I also lose a stitch sometimes where the holes are suppose to be. I am increasing wrong somehow. I knit continental style. I have the yarn in front of the needle when I increase. I just have to get this stitch pattern. I want a scarf and shawl with this stitch.
+Jewel Rae It is truly a very pretty stitch. It's a matter of repeating it several times in a small project, like a washcloth, so you can see what it is you are doing.
It is a very pretty stitch especially when you do it. I'm going to try it in a washcloth like you said because I have been doing it in just a small swatch. Thanks
It worked I can see the holes now. I love this stitch. I was doing 18 stitches and it was not coming out. I did 36 and like magic they started to show. What size needles are best to use for a scarf and shawl in this stitch?
Hi Joanne, Is there a YO before the first knit stitch, where the directions read k, YO (repeat 6 times) I seem to be missing something because I ended up with only 17 stitches instead of 18. To me, there is a YO missing Thank you
Hi! The instructions read, k1, yo 6 times. You probably skipped a yarn over before the knitting 2 together sequence. Please check this. Be well and thanks for liking us!
I've practised this pattern a number of times and always keep missing something! I'm almost there, though! One thing I just noticed while watching again. In your 2nd row (1st row of plain knit, around the 12th stitch it seems that you correct something with your hand and I am not sure why or how you did this. Is this something that affects the outcome of the row? Do you know what I am talking about? Help! And I ADORE YOUR VIDEOS. Thanks, Melody in Montreal.
So, let's see. The fancy row is :( k2tog), 3 times; (k1,yo) 6 times; and k 2 tog (3 times). This is the repetition. That means you need to start the second repetition with (k2tog), 3 times. So when you put the end of 1 repetition with the beginning of the next repetition, you end up having (k2tog ) 6 times.
+JoannesWeb awesome!! I had been looking for this stich for the longest time. I had found it in a pattern for a blanket but wanted to make a scarf or hat and I didn't know the multiple of stitches to cast on. thank you so much for this video!! very helpful!
lindaknisley - Feather and Fan can be done in various multiples, not just 18 ! and Old Shale Feather and Fan are both the SAME stitch - just different names....
Unfortunately, this is NOT Feather and Fan - this is actually Old Shale. Feather and Fan is a 14 stitch repeat, while Old Shale is an 18 stitch repeat.
Unfortunately, I attempted your method of starting with 14 stitches and it didn’t work. (I did not follow this tutorial) every other tutorial I’ve watched and followed for the feather and fan stitch all said 18 stitches which worked.
This is an easy and beautiful pattern. ❤ I will make a scarf and Queen size blanket for our RV. Thank you very much for this video. 😊
I knit this scarf 8 years ago. Back again to knit another one. Thank you for your tutorials!
Please give it a try! It is a lot of fun. People that know how to crochet, find it easier to learn knitting than the ones that don't use their hands to make things. You already have the coordination. It is very creative and knitting projects are not as thick as crocheted ones. Thank you again.

A gorgeous knitted pattern. This is a tutorial for a simple the knitted Feather and Fan Stitch.
Pattern Instructions:

(knit one, yarn over) 6 times,
(knit 2 together) 3 times.
(these last 3, together with the first 3

Hello Ms Joanne! I really enjoy your wonderful video about this beautiful feather and fan pattern-it's lovely! I understand that 72 stitches will make a shawl...but do you think that 52 stitches will make a shawl? Just curious about this...
It depends which needles and yarn you use. If they are thicker, yes. Make a swatch to make sure.
I would like to use this to make a mermaid tail blanket. I'm not sure how to decrease it though, because the mermaid tail gets skinnier near the end. So I would have to decrease the number of stitches but I'm not sure how...

I made a small baby blanket for my grandson, with Caron's Simply Soft Yarn. It took 4 balls. I used #9 knitting needles and made 8 repeats. Plus 4 stitches on each side for the border.
About the answer below: Knitting or purling, depending on what the pattern shows.
how do you finish off while retaining the curved effect pls?
The finish doesn't look like the beginning. The curves go the other way. But it still shows. You bind off on the 3rd. Row, since it's knit and easier.
You can ask anything, any tine. I love it!
I just want to ask dat wen we will bind it off, will the shape be a straight line, n if so, will it look gud in a muffler?
No, not when you finish it, but you can still sew it with the beginning. Yes, it'll be nice for a muffler.
OK.
And so on...
how many stitches do you cast on. to make a scarf. you need more than 18 to do all the rows.
It depends on the yarn you use. If it's a #4 yarn, with size 9 needles, I would cast on 36
How do you bind off to make the ends match?
The ends don't match, because of the nature of the stitch.
Gracias x la respuesta, estare atenta de sus videos en español hasta la proxima .

+Amber Wood Absolutely. It will look very nice.

Have no idea! LOL
I'll ask my daughter. She is the one doing the videos and editing.
Be well!
Knits are multiplying by 11 why?
The pattern should be a multiple of 18. You are probably not making the yarn overs 6 times.
do you ever do the log cabin afagan? if so let me know plz,, thanks so much
Thank you for your tutorial. I am going to try and do this. Will let you know how it turns out. God bless you
I’m starting pattan it’s relly nice I’m knitting a shrug
This is a common misconception. This is not a Feather and Fan stitch. It is Old shoal stitch, the two are different and have been mistaken for years.
Thank you

Si, lo haremos pronto.
