    Great comparison, Ian! I have the Phantom 3 Standard and wondered what I was really missing against the Mavic. To tell you the truth, for my type of flying (usually within a 700' - 900' radius) I think the Phantom is all the bird I need. 1080p resolution is all I need as my computer can't even handle the 2.7K of the Phantom. Thanks for the comparison video, I can rest assured now that I've got the perfect drone for my use at this time. Cheers and good flying!

    100% agree Ian. The Phantom is a great drone for someone to get started with. I bought a P3 for $250AUD so smashing it isn’t so bad. Yes it’s big compared to the Mavic or even Spark, but seriously if anyone is buying a drone for a bit of fun and to learn on, you’re going to be doing it near home or transported in the back of a car, so it’s not as a big a deal as one might think. The only time it’s an issue is if you want to take it on a plane for holiday shots, but then again would a complete novice be doing that? I don’t think so. So Ian you’re right, get yourself a cheaper P3 have fun with it and if it’s still in one piece when you want to upgrade, it should be a reasonably easy sell. Afterall, it’s still what was a top of the line DJI product.

    Great review, the Mavic was always going to win. The Phantom 3 however is far more robust, and replacement parts are very inexpensive, and being slightly less technical many could repair the Phantom or upgrade parts themselves. Would like to see the mavic vs the Phantom 3 pro, especially in the video and stills quality department.

    • @IaninLondon
      @IaninLondon  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cheers! If it's down to camera, then the P3 Pro would win I think. Range would be close, but the Mavic will always win on portability and quick set up...

      I just bought the p4pro, i usually build my own, I hate the phantoms and the way they look but i can't build my own quad with the camera, gimbal, flight time, the p4pro has. The camera is incredible. For a while i thought about the mavic, but settled on the p4pro purley on camera. i have diy tris and quads for blasting around. I think the p3pro is perfect for beginners, that have an interest in videography/photography. Also the p3pro has been out a while and has proven itself to be trustworthy.

    Hello Ian in London, this is Iko in Seattle (originally from Germany). Thank you very much for this comparison. I am in the market for a drone and these 2 happened to be on my shortlist. Ultimately I intend using the drone in Search & Rescue, so range and size might eventually dictate me getting a Mavic - but for starters the P3 seems just fine.

    • @IaninLondon
      @IaninLondon  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Iko. Glad to help you out. If you are looking to use the drone out in the field, walking, then the Mavic will probably be the right choice thanks to its small size. But be aware that all drones have similar cameras to your cellphone; quite wide angle with no zoom. Something 30 feet away will look quite small.... So unless you're searching for people in bright orange jackets, the help may be limited... (So maybe try a cheaper drone first). Ian

    I own a Phantom 3 Standard, and routinely fly round trips just shy of 5 miles in huge circles, lasting up to 20 minutes duration, all using Litchi Mission Hub. I pre-plan the flights on my desktop computer, take the drone outside, send it on its way, then go back indoors to do other stuff until just 5 minutes prior to the drone's scheduled arrival, at which point I step out to execute a manual landing on a purpose-built table.
    Phantom 3 Standards are currently changing hands for as low as $120 on ebay, and I wouldn't buy any more costly a drone, even if I had the money burning a hole in my pocket. The Phantom 3 Standard is that proverbial diamond in the rough, for delivering spectacular range and imagery, on a tightwad's budget. Your mission, if you choose to accept it, is to buy a Phantom 3 Standard TODAY. This tape has self-destructed.

    • @IaninLondon
      @IaninLondon  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Just remember you're supposed to be watching the drone in case of a light aircraft flying low, or a balloon flight, or microlight... But otherwise, top points 👍🏻👍🏻

      @@IaninLondon I live in a remote rural area where the only passing aircraft are at cruise altitude 6 miles up, with no helicopter traffic at all. The nearest DJI No Fly Zone is good 100 miles away, so my only worry in this neck of the woods, would be hawks.

    Nicely done mate. Loving getting to grips with the Mavik and looking forward to putting it to work this coming week during a Dunkirk Photo Shoot we have on Friday and Saturday with it filming the Behind the Scenes footage on the beach and in the studio. Portability of the drone is a huge deciding factor for the work I do as any bigger and then I'm having to decide if I take it or not, and if not then I'm definitely missing out on some filming possibilities. That being said if I do end up getting as much use out of it as I hope then I'm thinking of upgrading to the Phantom 4 Pro ... but in the mean time hoping DJI introduce some of the it's features into the next Mavik...if that makes sense.
    Thanks again mate...great video.

    • @IaninLondon
      @IaninLondon  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Cheers Glyn. Yes, in your line of work, you need the drone to be like an additional lens, not a major part of your luggage If you want to improve the camera, then you'll need to go larger and the 4 Pro or the 4 Advanced would be the obvious choice with their full 1inch 20 M pixels sensors. Still photos are where you will really see the difference, but both the 4 pro/adv and the Mavic will be fine for video.
      Good luck with the Dunkirk shoot.
      Cheers,
      Ian

    I didn't realize the range was so short on the Phantom.. we're supposed to keep them in sight so I guess it's still ok. I will be the subject in most of my shots, anyway... or near whatever my subject happens to be. It is nice to know the Mavic can always get me to the far shots. I personally went with the P3S as my first advanced drone because of price and because it does not have all the avoidance sensors. The drone forces me to "fly" it instead of just guiding it. I felt it was important to develop the core flight skills and then later move to something more robust. This way if the fancy addons didn't work I still have the basic flight skillset to fall back on in case of an issue/emergency. Plus at the time the second batch of Mavics that were made during the Chinese New Year were coming out and reports of poor quality and flight issues were pretty common. Oh and the P3S being an older flight system already had the bugs worked out of it.

      Fully agree. I think the sensors on the Mavic are a bit over played. You should be well up out of the way of things and they don't work on tree twigs which are enough to knock your Mavic down.... Range is the big advantage... But if you're done staying under half a mile, you should be fine and happy.... Cheers, Ian.

      Phantoms are great, but the P3 Standard uses a radio system that is prone to disconnects after you get more than around 500 metres, and much closer if there are loads of trees around. But the P3 Advanced and Pro don't suffer from that issue as they use a compeltely different radio system for control, as does the P4. All I'm doing in this vid is offereing the P3S as a much cheaper option ... Cheers, Ian

    Some people obviously miss your point here. Mavic is obviously better, but I've ended up deciding to get a Phantom 3 Standard as a rookie drone pilot with an intention of upgrading to a Mavic or better in a few months. Budget, experience, shooting and flight intentions are the decision makers here. Getting used to P3S I think I'll keep it a little longer than I've expected, because for not it just does the job for me. Anyways, it's a great video, with I've seen this one before I went through the difficult choice of either spending, or holding back. :) Cheets mate.

Great Quality images (research on how to set up the camera and use decent editing software and its as good as you need I think personally this side of a professional necessity. It is a little bulky, I use a recently found back back skeleton that holds the drone, an extra battery and the props (you have to carry the controller and tablet though :( ) The best Range I had out of mine was 850 metres over a reservoir in South Wales with a Mavic Pro following all the way.. again, more than adequate.. however, there have been occasions when i needed JUST that little extra 200 metres to get close to a subject or detail.. I get around this normally with editing software but, the quality DOES suffer. The battery life is great, (be mindful in cold weather you will need to warm them up or the P3S won't fly). As you said Ian the intelligent flight modes are cool but I only use POI and Follow me.. However I do have track mode by using the paid for APP LitCHI which allows you to play and fly your missions without even leaving the home.. you just turn up at the location dn it flies the preset paths with direction, height and views already set in.
    The Magic Pro; My friend whom I fly with regularly have just moved up from a Yuneec 400 4K.. another good quality flying camera but he felt it was too large, cumbersome and just lacked battery longevity. His Mavic is just as you have said Ian. Compact, efficient and a decent battery life to boot. The camera is awesome but he says he can't tell the difference. As for the intelligent flight modes.. he prefers the track and tripod modes.. everything else he doesn't bother with. For him RANGE is king.. He loves to fly it to its maximum range and does so regularly without dropouts and loss of signal unto 5500 metres..we are different fliers though, I love the cinematic effects he loves the sensation of flying. one thing to mention, with the "fly more pack" (extra battery and bag...) he doesn't feel that the magic is safe in the bag as well as the batteries.. he says (and I agree) its uber snug.. and if dropped or banged what would the damage be. so he does carry another small bag for extra batteries and things like a power bar and sd cards etc.. I would probably mention the DJI googles for the Mavic.. I don't believe you can use them on the P3S. so if you are looking for immersive FPV experience thats the one to go for. the price of the fly more combo today is £1300 that is nearly four times the price of the P3S. Return to home on the Mavic is far more superior,, the forward sensors in collaboration with the belly sensors and downward camera gives UTTER (I SH*T you not) perfect location return to home accuracy to the MILLIMETRE.
    In conclusion. Both are fab. but unless you NEED 4K, unless you NEED 6000k range, unless you ABSOLUTELY NEED a small package drone The DJI Phantom 3 Standard is more than capable. On my channel I use it to good effect. I have put filters on it, improved the carry options and bought extra batteries not original equipment all for less than £500 allowing my 2 hours of flying time n relative comfort and freedom of creativity.
    Finally, I'm off to the states in a few weeks and my son has a DJI Spark.. from what I have seen this is my next drone,, as good a camera, more range, a little smaller and a bit of collision avoidance for half the price of a Magic.
    Ian, I love your on screen presence, you are a natural! haha.. keep up the great work. Happy flying all.
    Much love!
    Gareth

      Evening Gareth. Great to hear from you and I fully agree with pretty much your whole summary there. That was the whole point of this video; to make it clear that range and portability are pretty much the only reasons to get the Mavic. Granted they're both pretty big reasons and were my own, but those may not be a requirement for everyone.
      The Mavic actually photos its take off point which is why you get precise landing. I nice touch but I usually hand catch mine...
      I got the fly-more combo and yes, the bag is very snug; so snug that I can't see how you can get the remote in unless you've got a stick-guard fitted. But it's well-padded and I'm pretty confident it's protecting it okay, but a slightly bigger bag would have been better.
      One final point; my feeling is that the Spark is not a great product for its price, so check out the specs carefully before you buy. The camera is really poor; much lower spec than the PS3. 15 minute flight time and its range is indeed severely limited; remember you don't get the remote with it so you're limited to using your phone's Wi-Fi. If you do buy the remote, then you're spending and extra £250 taking you up to £700 which is mad considering you can get the standard Mavic + remote for £1050 on some offers, or $999. All DJI drones seem to be stepped down for CE (European) use and the specs for the Spark are really poor for CE use, which is automatic based on your location.... 300-500 metres max. www.dji.com/spark/info#specs
      Anyway, ta for the good words; I like to have a bit of a laugh in front of the camera whilst getting the facts across.
      Interesting you're off to the States in couple of weeks; I'm off next week for 3 weeks; Eclipsing by any chance? :) I'm up in Utah, Colorado and Wyoming for a few weeks. Have a great time fella and chat v soon.... Ian

      Thanks Ian,
      I have (because of this, so thank you) realised that the range is only 300m!! absolutely no point now. I was willing to forgo the 3 gimbal Gimbal for portability and the lower flight time (batteries are cheaper) but the range is a deal killer for me now :( to say I'm gutted is an understatement.
      Guess I'm gonna be getting a P3 Advanced pretty cheap and better range and Camera but familiar controls and performance.
      LOVE... the locations you are going to. Me? I'm doing North Carolina & Georgia... then February North Dakota & Texas.. no Eclipsing for me sadly.. way above MY skill set. hahaha.
      Keep safe fella!

    Hi, fair review, but the Mavic is much more stable indoors, my home wifi drove my P4 wild, yet the Mavic is rock solid in any environment .

      TBH, I've never flown indoors. I've never understood why you'd do that :) I fly to get photos and video of landscapes. But yes, if you want to fly indoors, then the Mavic is generally better (but still read plenty of horror stories of Mavics going bananas indoors.... Stick to out doors! Ian

    Nice vid!! Have been flying the P3 for about a year now. Have really enjoyed it. My first real crash was due to the compressed video feed, you would think 720 hd would be sufficient, and it is, unless you're flying among technical and close quarters w/ trees etc. I had a branch literally jump out of nowhere and it dropped the drone into an icy snowy floor :-( I replayed the wreck several times and the video feedback didn't show that branch until it was 2 ft away. The other complaint is hovering and finite input. The P3 is amazing all things considered, but if you're hovering within a couple of feet of an object or person, you have to ride the controls (I noticed that was the case in your video above too). This also makes for indoor flight a little more anxious. The P3 gives a good image, amazing views via the gift of flight, but it would be so cool to have better and more smooth finite control. It seems once it gets moving it's really hard to curve its trajectory and speed smoothly. I've practiced and practiced. I get some great shots, but it seems to get away on its own a little. Not sure if the Mavic is like that? Also, the sensors on the Mavic are a great perk, but I don't think they detect small things like a tree branch or power line? Plus, it'd be great to have those sensors above, behind and side to side, even if they're limited in their detection. It would be great to set the sensitivity of those sensors, what sort or size of objects to detect.
    So, would you feel confident letting the Mavic hover relatively close between the tops of two trees (is it that stable and sure) unlike the P3? And are the controls more responsive in flight on the Mavic? For instance, if I'm doing a shot that sweeps or orbits an object and am trying to keep the object in the center of the shot, the input and flight results seem to vary some with the P3 making this difficult. I usually can get a good 180 degrees w/ a take or two, but 360 is nigh impossible.
    Thanks much!! Sorry for the BIG comment 😬

    • @IaninLondon
      @IaninLondon  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Howdy again. The P3 will drift; it relies solely on GPS and that lock drifts by a few feet all the time. The Mavic uses downward cameras when it sees objects below within 20 feet, hence it sits rock steady.
      Sensors all around wouldn't help too much IMHO; they protect against large objects, but not everything. Have you watched my new video on the top 15 ways to crash? I cover trees, powerlines and a few other ways to lose it... th-cam.com/video/yZxvyHfj8gU/w-d-xo.html

    • @mnstar53
      @mnstar53 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      There is no way in the world a video feed can cause a crash. I don't know who fed you that nonsense, but you should stop listening to the immediately. Also, it is insane to fly ANY drone within a foot of an object and not expect problems. I don't care how many sensors you have, a gust of wind can cause it to drift a bit. Good Lord.

    • @IaninLondon
      @IaninLondon  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      mnstar53, we're talking about the Phantom Standard here; it only has GPS for lateral stability; the compass and altimeter won't help much when you're trying to hover. You can see I love the phantoms, as most of this video is about how good it is compared to the Mavic.... Totally agree you can't be flying closer than a good 3-4 feet from any object as you'll always get unexpected drift at any time....

    I'm still nervous about pushing my Mavic to the limits. I've taken it out to roughly half a mile before, but I've had occasions where I've lost connection with my remote at a distance of 200 feet.
    One thing that I've yet to look into is the emergency return feature. Is it supposed to return to a home point (assuming that you set it) when it loses connection with the controller? In my experience, I've had to restart the controller and attempt to reconnect with it while it hovers in place.

    • @IaninLondon
      @IaninLondon  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Aaron. It's not an emergency RTH. It's a useful RTH. It auto sets whenever you power up and is a fine way to bring your Mavic back, especially if it's a bit breezy.... Just try it out by pressing the return to home button on the left of the screen.... This is different from the lost signal RTH but are you losing signal frequently? ,Ian.

    I purchased the phantom 3 standard a week a go and it's great just want to fly it all the time, my only issue is it's size it's noisy and not very suttle probably draws more attention also a chore having to wind the props on and off, although I haven't flown a Mavic I can only assume it handles a bit better in the air aswell? if I had loads of spare cash would get the Mavic air but for the price I payed I definitely got a lot for my money!

Sorry to hear about your app problems; assuming you're Android, you may find it runs fine on your device if you download it from DJI.com Just because it's not listed on Play store for your device doesn't mean it won't run fine. I had to download and install manually for my old Lenovo tablet.... Be aware though that it may run slow or even freeze, which isn't really what you want when you're in the air... :) Cheers, Ian

      Many thx for reply Ian. In both cases I downloaded from the Play store... but get a quite ridiculous ''pulsing'' dialog box which won't go and stops any progress. Phone is an S4 with Jelly Bean - I think that's 4.0.1 The tab is a Tab A - 6.0.1. DJI say both no good. Not sure how I'd install from a file got from DJI site - wonder if that's worth a try if feasible. May be I'll try and get an iPhone Mini with IOS 9 or better... downside is expense!!

    Hi Ian, pal what it took you so long to make another great video :) I have got mine mavic baby last month and boy oh boy.... Of course straight away I crashed it in my flat, couldn't resist the first day I got it :) nothing major happened but I learned my lesson. I am still scared to fly far away, or when I am on top of the mountain here in Ireland, but step by step I learn something new every time I fly this baby. I had an issue with mine, that was loosing connection with my remote control and my Samsung, but I find out its that small wire which connects it got damage. So now I connect it through usb on the bottom and it works. Ian if you could help me with few questions that would be amazing. I would like to ask you: 1. Do you use any of lens for better videos? 2. What video editing program are you using on you computer ? 3. After your accident with your first mavic are you scared to fly to far or that it will fell? I mean I have that feeling that I will loose it or it will fell in the water, even on 70% battery :) I don't know maybe its a rookie feeling and will go away after few more flights. 4. Could you recommend fly mode if you want to do a great video of any beautiful sight ? I reduced my gimbal movement to 30 % because it moved to fast and it wrecked my video concept :)
    Sorry pal for such a long message, but from all the youtubers I feel that you are the genuine one and the real one who can help beginners as you had your fails and learned from it and they say ''You should be learning from your own mistakes''....... yeah, right :)))) Thank you again for your amazing videos and looking forward for another one. Arnold

      Hi Arnold. Thanks for that! Have to say, this vid was a bit fiddly to make, hence the delay :) A lot of editing involved and it took a week of an hour or two each evening to piece it together after I'd finished shooting it. And I was also sorting out my mini channel intro vid that I posted the other week just to say hello to new visitors.
      So, your questions: First off, don't fly indoors. It will almost always end in tears sooner or later, but usually sooner. Stay out doors away from trees and people :) 1 - I just use the stock lenses on the Mavic and phantom; never thought of replacing them; not sure you even can given that they're fixed in place. I did use NV filters on the Phantom but haven't got myself a set yet for the Mavic; they only help when you're shooting video in bright sunlight or want special effects (especially over water) with stills. 2. I use fully paid Power Director 15 with Color Director installed as well. Simple and intuitive for editing. 3. It's like riding a bike; get out and build the confidence; have confidence in the device and know it's not going to plummet to its doom just because you're a little high or over water. Look at it this way; once it's more than 20 metres high, any fall will be damaging, so don't worry about the extra height when you're flying high... Finally, you've already made the main improvement in your settings by reducing the gimbal movement speed. Make use of 'POI - Point of Interest' but otherwise, keep it simple; slow steady flying forwards or reversing is generally a great shot; also rising up whilst shooting, but you need to be careful to keep the camera aligned down if you're rising up higher..... And be brutal with your editing; a single great shot becomes boring if you see it 4 times from slightly different perspectives. ...
      Off to the US for a month this week, so won't be too much in the way of vids for a month unfortunately, except maybe the odd scenic vid! Cheers, Ian

    Ian, thank you! Did I understand you correctly? When filming myself fishing from a boat, the Ph3 has updates available where the drone could circle me as a point of interest and/or follow me in the boat?

    • @KrisNi
      @KrisNi 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, the P3 has intelligent flightmodes like point of interest (you can set the surrounding speed, hight and distance). You can also tell to follow you (It will track your Controller, not an object), but then it won't fly circles, just straight follow (There's another app which will enable the object tracking mode).

    Thanks Ian, useful information but I wanted a drone with a small form factor for portability on a motorbike, so the standard phantom seems a bit bulky for me. I recently looked at the Spark to, until I found out it has a 300m range over here in the UK. Oh, I'm pleased you managed to get your Mavic replaced. I lost a Hubson once - not the same I know, but I spent a good few hours in brambles trying to recover it. I'd probably still be there if it was a Mavic. Cheers

      Hi ironman :) Yeah, if you're on the bike, you have to have the Mavic... And I did spend 5 hours in those brambles in the exact line of flight.... Never again :)

      The Spark with a controller has an optimum 1.2 mile range.. just using your phone as a controller, a lot less.

    • @Ironitis
      @Ironitis 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not in the UK, we're subject to EU airspace regulations which substantially limit the power. In the USA you'll get 1.2 miles under FAA power limit regulations. In the EU you'll get 300m, with the controller.

    Hi ian what do you think of the carbon props for the phantom👍🏻

    • @IaninLondon
      @IaninLondon  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I no longer have my phantom. But for carbon props in general, they're stronger and better when you crash, but that's about it. Any lightness in weight is not going to make any real difference.

    Since you obviously own both, honestly which is your favorite? The one you find yourself flying the most. I already own the phantom 3 standard and have been considering to buy the Mavic pro because of it’s great size and portability

    • @IaninLondon

      I have now sold the P3S and replaced it with the new Mavic Air; the portability is the key driver for me. So I have a Pro and an Air now...Have a watch of this video....

    Would a Mavic mini be a good option to buy or buy a used Mavic pro? I can get a Mavic pro for $ 100 more

    • @IaninLondon
      @IaninLondon  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I am still waiting for my Mini to arrive, but given its portability, probably the Mini. The P3 is huge in comparison.

    I’ve changed my decision on drones a Mavic pro or a phantom 4 I will travel twice in a year. What do you think I should get

    • @IaninLondon
      @IaninLondon  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mavic 2 Pro had the same size sensor and range as the Phantom 4 Pro. But is a fraction of the size when folded. Its not just travelling but also storage and weekend drives.... M2Pro would be my choice. 👍🏻
