All copters use less energy when flying forward compared to hovering as they get extra lift from the forward movement. That being said, the Mavic is probably still more efficient when moving
Thanks for this great review, i will buy the Mavic pro because i live in Belgium and here it’s not allowed to fly with a drone that weighs more then 1kg without having a special license for flying bigger drones. The Mavic is very transportable and very nice low weight so i can take it everywhere with me in Belgium without license.
Nice comparison, but it's incomplete without talking about the controllers. And I'm not a selfie person, but I think the gesture technology is pretty cool.
Thanks Ready Set Drone for your non confusing, and very informative video comparison of these two DJI drones! A quick question if I may. I am a old guy that is into model railroading and taking photos of trains so I can paint up some for me and my grandson. Momma (the BANKER) would probably beat me if I spent $1000 on a drone to take those pics, even if I enjoyed the drone flying too!), so my question is, what is a drone in the $300 and below range that in your opinion, would be a good choice for a half-blind klutz (I destroyed multiple COX airplanes as a kid, trying to take off!!) and would have an acceptable camera resolution + range( probably not more 500 yds). Any suggestions and tips would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks!
Thanks for the comment. Based on your criteria, I would suggest picking up a Phantom 3 Standard. I think you can get them for around $300 and it has acceptable camera resolution and range. You might be able to find a used on on eBay for cheap too. Thanks for watching!
+Wong Jian Rui 3 standard on ebay between £300-450.. be perfect for what you want, great camera, easy to fly, good flight times and more than enough range. you'll pick one up for close to 300..
I recently bought the P3S for $330 from DJI refurbished so it is like new and have been loving it. The price right now is $400 but if you watch it for a while it should go down again around major holidays.
Mavic vs. Phantom 4 is not even a question anymore... Mavic does many things the Phantom cannot do, and the Phantom holds very little over the Mavic and it is more expensive. Really tough to justify at this point... Phantom 4 Pro however is a different story ;)
Thank you for this great comparison - excellent for me, looking for a replacement of my Phantom 3. A lot is going for the Mavic, but I cannot help noticing the staggering difference in image quality. The Phantom is tack sharp, while the Mavic looks positively unfocused. Check 15:23 - the left side of the image is not just a tad soft, but quite frankly totally blurred. I don't think I could accept this subpar image quality and I am just about to cancel my order. Did you set the focus correctly?
Just coming at this as a 35 year photographer, 2.8 versus 2.2 does not provide THAT much extra in the way of depth of field (distance in focus). I don't own either of these, but am thinking of the Mavic some day soon. Maybe the 2.2 aperature is causing the softness on the Mavic, also lens build can make a difference. Maybe there was a dud lens element in the test Mavic. Hard to say..?
I'm a sailing filmmaker and will be trying to hand catch my drone (after I've gained some experience with it :-) so thanks for the heads up catching the Phantom. Have you got any resources on learning to hand catch or otherwise working from a boat? If you had to guess, how many times will I hand catch the drone before I drop it? I assume I will lose the drone so I am looking at cheaper older Phantom 3 units :-)
When you say "have GPS on the Phantom" do you mean do I have GPS on the iPhone I control it with? I was afraid we'd have to stop... harder on a sailboat unfortunately...
I just bought a Mavic 2 Pro a couple months ago, and I absolutely love it! The Hasselblad camera is amazing. I was shooting video of a local sculpture park at 5:45am before sunrise, and the picture quality was like broad daylight. In fact, that video can be viewed on my TH-cam Channel.
Just received my Mavic Pro (Ordered in Oct) Thanks for the comparison and look forward to flying. It also appears that based on the production delay the price has escalated. The prices I'm seeing are mored geared towards folks that are reselling (upwards to $1500-1600.00)
Pawel Orzechowski the phantom 4 pro can shoot 4k 60fps 20megapixel 100mbps bit rare footage, the quality is miles ahead of the mavic. I am talking about the PRO specifically though, it has a much MUCH better camera then the original phantom 4 original.
Daytona 6263 no it doesn't shoot in raw ? Maybe the phantom 5 will but no I don't mean raw footage. The sensor had a huge upgrade in the camera between the 4 and 4 pro and just watch some proper videos comparing the footage between the two, huge difference in quality now.
Great video presentation - thank you. I was wondering if I could catch my drone on our catamaran by simply putting out a large, wide aperture catch net, and fly / drop the drone into that net. Would the blade rotation stop when it hits the net or would we do damage? I do not like he idea of catching the drone by hand and we want to film the boat under sail. I look forward to some valuable comments around this ... Cheers for now Brent
Just a note to say you can use an iPad mini with the controller, you just have to disconnect the side USB cable and plug one into the bottom. The gaps in the side of the controller clamps hold the corners of the iPad.
Thanks Ready Set.. l appreciate the info, I was reading my comment and I see that I have the word magic instead of Mavic. I think spell check put it in there and I didn't notice it.
I do a lot of photography and just wanted to mention... a 2.2 vs a 2.8 aperture is not negligible. As the aperture numbers get smaller, the difference between the numbers has more of an impact. I'd have to do the math, but I'd guess the 2.2 lets somewhere around 2x the amount of light as 2.8.. maybe a little less..
Just got my Mavic this week. Can't wait for the weather to cooperate so I can get it in the air! If I need to look professional, I'll show up with my Inspire. But the Mavic will come along too! Great video and comparison! I might still get the P4 Pro...
Go loyola! haha I liked that selfie pic at the end This is the best drone review channel ive found on youtube. Liked and subbed, thank you for this review. Very well done
As a teaching pro at a major 30,000 student university, FAU, the issue of f2.2 vs f2.8, this is a relatively significant factor on how much light strikes the images. About 40% more light with f2.2 optics will illuminate its imager as compared with f2.8 optics. Otherwise we like your videos.
Phantom 4 and Mavic are pretty much the same price. Also you probably aren't getting a Mavic anytime soon! The stock is so backed up. I am waiting on my pre-order.
I want this drone for my hubby's b-day, is it too cheap? Thanks! www.amazon.com/Holy-Stone-F181-Quadcopter-Headless/dp/B00SAUAP5C/ref=as_li_ss_tl?s=toys-and-games&ie=UTF8&qid=1493086319&sr=1-3-spons&keywords=drone&psc=1&linkCode=ll1&tag=product0d4-20&linkId=c3e74d1a1be3ee6d83cf5152443af8e2
Hi. Not here to bash you, but i think you're wrong about the footage quality comparison. The Mavic has problems with aliasing at higher framerates. (above 30fps) Also called "moire effect" Can be seen in this video at 4:17 in the golf flag's pole and edges of the windows of the houses. It is a camera limitation and can not been fixed by firmware update. Not a huge deal for everyone but for me it was a dealbreaker and i ended up getting the Phantom. Also it is cheaper in Finland than the Mavic. Phantom 4's camera simply is better. These are aerial photography tools and the most important thing is the camera. Also seems to me that your Mavic's lense's left side is blurry? It is a reported issue also.
nice, clear no nonsense review. the Mav is better in low wind for the same reason it not so good in wind, it's flying weight means lower trust and a faster response meaning in low wind it can adjust quicker with less power, but in wind its running at higher rota speeds so has less in reserve to cope with the wind. the sound level is also connected to weight and thrust needed.
Can't wait for my Mavic to arrive! It feels like it's been forever since I ordered it! Actually kind of has been..... October 15. If I'm ever concerned about what people think about my quad, i
Andrew Smith congratulations buddy! Glad yours is finally coming! I'll certainly keep waiting, as I really want it...... just irritated with DJI as usual. They definitely make the best products hands down but they know we can't get products anywhere near what they produce anywhere else..... their customer service repeatedly shows that. It's like dealing with Rc4wd.
Really comprehensive review. Your approach to the objective and subjective things is perfect, and should be used as a model for more product reviews. Great videos!
Great video. Just wanted to know do you need to have a internet connection for use ? i know you mentioned using on boats and some areas may loose connection.
He is so right about the PRO LOOK when you show up to do a job. That comment is just on point. I’m a sound engineer and as soon as I got the wireless iPad controlled mixer people reacted like if I was working for a major artist!! Psique
Track scenes were shot at Gorzyki Middle School in Austin TX. I thought your baseball field scenes looked familiar but Pinnacle in the background was the dead giveaway. Thanks for the video, I'm looking into buying a drone in the near future & found it helpful.
At 4:06 .. the fov is different.. but the crispness is very different too .. ! Is it the result of the edit or is there that much different in the native file ? 15:30 .. same.. the footage is far better on the phantom.. ! The mavic is blurry as hell.
Your video is helping me a lot in deciding. I have owned p2v and p3p before. At this point I still can't decide if I should get the phantom 4 and then wait for the mavic 2. Or just get the mavic and be happy with it. I see so many videos of concerns on the mavic that are holding me back. thanks for sharing
second career for me. rather than doing what I trained for , am now going back to school for skill set in AUVs; looks like masters is best option. dont go for the 1 day wonder courses" on be a drone pillot; is not what the industry is looking for ..you have to have some STEM ability...if you cant get past basic math, physic, stats, et al...or think you could learn it with motivation, dont bother. UAV jobs ; you need some basics math, chemistry, IT, physics, stats knowledge. if you dont have it...start at a community college and take nothing but STEM....and IT...you CAN get there!
I just had a thought that we usually tow a dinghy about 8' x4' , if i spread a net across it would this be easy to land and take off from ,sorry i am such a newby but you really know what you are talking about and i would appreciate your comments.
great video. I have a phantom 3 standard and I love it! Hoping to upgrade in the future and I think the mavic is the one. The portability is second to none.
For me the best new feature of the mavic has to be the increased range. A 1.2 mile difference is not trivial. And all the other features are basically equal to the p4, but in a smaller more portable form factor that is $200 cheaper. For now I am happy with my p3p. But I almost pulled the trigger on a mavic. I will probably wait until the mavic 2 to upgrade. nice video!
totally i have one still, pro plus though with low noise props. Theres no way i land it in sand or dusty terrian like when out fishing. Also its better in the often stronger coastal winds and can safetly deal with 800gms lift. i'm getting a mini 4 pro for its weight (249gms) and ease of portability. Thanks for your thoughts even several years later.
I just had a Phantom 3 get caught in one of my trees and the guy never came back for it.This thing was so beat up I guess the battery is the only good piece of anything that is left.Great vids sir...!
Thank's for the great video. In regards to flight time I've heard people talk about being able to buy slightly higher capacity batteries from the after market scene. Have you heard of such a thing ?
I really appreciate and enjoy your videos. The information and your opinion has helped me immensely helped me in my decision making process. Thank you so much.
Both of these are roughly the same price though; that's why I compared the Phantom 3 STANDARD with the Mavic... for someone starting out who simply can't afford a Mavic or who doesn't want to trash a $1,000 drone whilst they're learning..... Cheers, Ian
Exactly! :) My video shows the only two main differences are the size and range.... The camera on the standard is actually same size sensor and pixel resolution as the Mavic! Which is a little surprising given the price :) Great vids as ever guys Ian
Nice comparison . I would think if someone is going to show up as a professional to a wedding event , they might be bringing an Inspire instead of either of these 2 . IMO . I have both of these and think I am starting to like the Mavic more because of its portability . And an ipad mini 4 fits in the Mavic controller without too much effort.
You did a great job. Yet, from my research I have learned that the Mavic will not shoot 1080P at 60fps without issues. Are you sure you had it set at these settings.
Glad to hear it. If you have not checked out our comparison of the DJI Mavic Pro and Mavic Pro Platinum, you should watch that. The Mavic Pro Platinum is the best value drone on the market today in my opinion.
By the way see a major difference in DOF defocus in your videos, on the Mavic vs Phantom. The 2.8 is sharper and has a deeper DOF than 2.2. 2.2 is brighter sure by a little.
Thanks will take that on board! Will keep watching your vids when they happen. I used to fly fixed wing years ago And now I'm nearing retirement I thought something like the drone would be for me! And I'm pretty sure it is,I am also in pinnacle studio For my home movies etc, and I'm sure I could add some fantastic footage to my movies with the help of the Magic pro. But my flying skills were over 20 years ago and I know you don't forget it I'm sure I'd be a little rusty, plus all the technology today I find it a bit of a mountain to climb! Like using the mobile phone as a flight screen, and if you can't see the drone how do you control it etc etc. I'm sure I'll get there with you guys available and your videos! Keep up the good work! Dave UK Dave UK
Great review , I’m thinking about adding the mavic 2 zoom as my second drone to supplement my mavic air. I actually feel the phantom is starting to look more like a toy to be honest. Maybe the phantom line needs to die as the mavic is really just a slimmed down phantom with folding legs, the actual guts of the machine are likely almost identical.
Im surprised you seem to regard the video quality of both to be of much the same. Based on the bits of footage you showed I'd of said that the phantom's video was noticeably sharper and the colures feel more believable, if a little washed out. Thanks for the review, very informative.
Hi; Great comparison video. The Mavic is on my wish list, but still debating on weather to buy it or not. My current GPS camera quads consist of a P3 Standard, Bebop 2 and a Yuneec breeze. In your video comparison at about the 15:35 mark in the video, the colors on the Mavic of the flags and close up images look warm and more realistic. The P4 looks a little dull and the colors are less vibrant. When you look at the trees at the farthest point of the videos the images on the Mavic look more blurred or out of focus. The P4 image is more clear, but the colors are still on the dull side. Also, have do you have a opinion on which one handles rapidly changing light conditions better. Such as shade to full sun, or when flying in wooded areas where you suddenly come into a very sunny area. Always enjoy your videos. Thanks for all your time and effort. Greetings from Western Canada.
ill go for mavic. thanks a lot for the comparison. im starting a vlog soon so ill buy one for filming. =) thanks

Thanks for the summary, Now I have DJI Phantom 3 Pro and will buy DJI Mavic Pro, unfortunately in Indonesia has not been sold.
Thanks for the comparison !!!
I've been watching you for several months, but this is the first time to write. Oh... you're the best drone columnist!!!
All copters use less energy when flying forward compared to hovering as they get extra lift from the forward movement. That being said, the Mavic is probably still more efficient when moving

Great choice!
Nice comparison, but it's incomplete without talking about the controllers.
And I'm not a selfie person, but I think the gesture technology is pretty cool.
I really appreciate your no-nonsense straight forward videos. Very informative.
Best comparison video of the two!
FINALLY, a message delivered the way it's SUPPOSED to be: honest and straight forward... No bull... Thanks, now i KNOW which one I'm buying
Thanks for watching!
any tips and tricks of mavic pro because we love it.
+Ready Set Drone may i know the actual price of the phantom 3 standard . thanks

3 standard on ebay between £300-450..

I recently bought the P3S for $330 from DJI refurbished so it is like new and have been loving it. The price right now is $400 but if you watch it for a while it should go down again around major holidays.
Ready Set Drone Thank You! Keep up the great work. I hope to view more of your videos.
Good stuff!! Although I bought my mavic pro, I just listened to the entire video to find out what's in phantom 4 and the difference. Good job!
Mavic vs. Phantom 4 is not even a question anymore... Mavic does many things the Phantom cannot do, and the Phantom holds very little over the Mavic and it is more expensive. Really tough to justify at this point... Phantom 4 Pro however is a different story ;)
The phantom 4 is better
I watched this vid multiple times because I'm looking to buy a Dji drone and this really helped thank you
Cool! Thanks for watching. Which one are you getting?
I know this is almost 2 years later. But since they are huge in the second hand market this is still a very informative and relevant video!! Thank you
Thank you for this great comparison - excellent for me, looking for a replacement of my Phantom 3. A lot is going for the Mavic, but I cannot help noticing the staggering difference in image quality. Time to start saving
SHP did you save enough?
Yea also curious, were you able to buy one?
Great genuine comparison. Like the fact that you actually chose one over the other. Not another 20 min video without the closure. Cheers mate
Thanks!
Wow! Perfect video like for you!
I just bought a new DJI Mavic Pro I love it.
I'm a sailing filmmaker and will be trying to hand catch my drone (after I've gained some experience with it :-) so thanks for the heads up catching the Phantom. +Distant Shores TV It is actually pretty easy to catch the Phantom. Just be sure the boat is not moving and you have GPS on the Phantom!
When you say "have GPS on the Phantom" do you mean do I have GPS on the iPhone I control it with? I was afraid we'd have to stop... harder on a sailboat unfortunately...
get the Phantom 3 standard, that is what your looking for. Has gps built in and has live live to your phone.

Always glad to help!
You do some seriously good review's comparisons,I'm researching drone's,so your reviews are the best I've seen.Thank you & Happy Christmas.

Phantom 4 Pro has a better camera, but that Mavic sure is portable.
mavic has a better camera lol xD

Thanks for the fine Pro Presentation. I'm new to the Drone mindset, so I'm trying to gather info. on what and if I want to fly.
Great explanation. Very clear and straight to the point. Congratulations from Brasil.

I really appreciated you compared the 1080p images of both devices.

That was a well prepaired and helpful comparison.

Thank you for that amazing video. That really helped me!!
Over all I like the Mavic Pro better; however, I like the video on the Phantom 4 way better.
Love your video! What is the best Hard case to use for DJI 4 Pro because I'm going to Mexico and want to take it with me. Carry on of course!

great video. I have a phantom 3 standard and I love it! Hoping to upgrade in the future and I think the mavic is the one. The portability is second to none.
people have also 3d printed parts for the mavic to mount a tablet with
Great video with detailed comparison, hope to see one with DJI inspire 2
Thanks guy! You covered all the info I needed. I'm upgrading from DJI Phantom 3 Pro. Aiming towards DJI P4
Awesome - glad to hear it!
4:03 .. Does the Mavic's camera actually suck, or did you forget to prompt the camera to focus?
For me the best new feature of the mavic has to be the increased range. A 1.2 mile difference is not trivial. And all the other features are basically equal to the p4, but in a smaller more portable form factor that is $200 cheaper. For now I am happy with my p3p. But I almost pulled the trigger on a mavic. I will probably wait until the mavic 2 to upgrade. nice video!
Just got a mavic 2 zoom amazing I love the zoom range is very sharp.
With the Mavic, you don't have to mount the propellers. Good review/comparison. Tks.
totally i have one still, pro plus though with low noise props.
Very good video with important considerations! Congrats, buddy!
I really appreciate and enjoy your videos. The information and your opinion has helped me immensely helped me in my decision making process. Thank you so much.
Glad to hear that!
Great comparison! Good job!
Both of these are roughly the same price though; that's why I compared the Phantom 3 STANDARD with the Mavic...
for someone starting out who simply can't afford a Mavic or who doesn't want to trash a $1,000 drone whilst they're learning..... Cheers, Ian
I agree that if you are just starting, a P3 is a great way to go!
Exactly! :) My video shows the only two main differences are the size and range.... The camera on the standard is actually same size sensor and pixel resolution as the Mavic! Which is a little surprising given the price :) Great vids as ever guys
Ian
the p2 is better then a p3 standard wtf r u talkinhg about that thing is garbage at least p2 has no height restriction. im gonna get the mavic for 745
Nice job on reviewing both Drones...very informative
Well done! Intelligent, well thought-out comparison of the drones.
Thanks!
+Brian Meister Thanks!
Thank you for the video. I want to especially thank you for being unbiased.
Good review, all info without music fill in.
Great video- tons of great info. I'm not a drone flier yet but I'm shopping, so this was a great help. Thanks!
Although I will never own either of these quadcopters , the video was very informative , and interesting : Thumbs up Kelly :)
Tim Robinson haha same here
why not? im sure you can spare $1000 if you really want to.
I couldn't even spare $10 lately lol
Tim Robinson work hard and I guarantee you can get one. Make it your goal! Hustle. You can do it.
bruh! same... but if i do i go for the mavic for its portability
Great video! We went with the Mavic and have been really happy with it. We just captured some incredible footage of sharks swimming near surfers
Do more vids on the mavic I will get mine January
YEAH ! ... Same here hopefully ...
Me too! I don't have money for it yet but hopefully by late December I can save up enough.
Any experience with cold weather flying, sub zero. I was wondering what sort of affect the cold would have on the batteries.
Thanks will take that on board! Will keep watching your vids when they happen. I used to fly fixed wing years ago
And now I'm nearing retirement I thought something like the drone would be for me! And I'm pretty sure it is,I am also in pinnacle studio
For my home movies etc, and I'm sure I could add some fantastic footage to my movies with the help of the Magic pro.

Hope to see some stuff from the Phantom 4 pro. Specialy the pro's and cons between the phantom 4 pro and mavic
Yes - working on it. Will have some more P4 Pro videos out soon!
Ok cool man.
I am kinda looking forward to the phantom 4 pro.
Im surprised you seem to regard the video quality of both to be of much the same. Based on the bits of footage you showed I'd of said that the phantom's video was noticeably sharper and the colures feel more believable, if a little washed out.
Thanks for the review, very informative.
Great Video! I'm planning on getting the P3S!
Would like to see this review comparing the Mavic to the new Phantom 4 Pro
Thanks Kevin! I've been to Banff, Calgary and Vancouver - beautiful place. Thanks for watching and happy flying!
thank you sir......for your informational videos.
I don't get why they didn't put legs on the back of the mavic
george aura ikr
Maybe to try and make it lighter.
Maybe for those legs on the bottom that push in when you land.
It's all about the foldability and small package for backpacking it.
george aura - Mavic flies, it doesn't walk or run, so legs would be unnecessary appendages. It stands on its little back feet just fine.
New to the hobby so I decided to learn on the Phantom 3.
Good choice!
