    Refinishing a double bound tele atm, obviously binding doesn't like heat guns very much so I'm going to remove the rest of the finish on the sides and rebind it, class video and exactly what I was looking for 👍

    Hunter, I was absolutely blown away this morning when I was watching a Strat setup video from Marty and you appeared. I watched you grow up across the street from us and really miss your family. So proud of you. Keep it up and maybe I can buy one of your builds one day. Say hello to your mom for me!

    I bought one of those binding tape dispensers from StewMac, for use one-handed, and it's awesome (although I did have to train myself to not instinctively grab it to anchor it). Really good to just rip off tape as needed. Also, I like your crip scarf.

      Yeah, I actually made my own tape dispenser which holds about 10 rolls haha. I just need to mount it! Thanks, wearing it to stay safe from the rona haha.

    Cool job. Where did you place the join in the back bind please?

    • @VanHoutenBuilds
      @VanHoutenBuilds  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I joined it right at the base of the heal of the neck. You will have to use a blow dryer or heat gun to warm up the binding so that you can bend it and form it around the curves.

    • @JesHill
      @JesHill 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@VanHoutenBuilds Cool thanks. I've done one so far, the fretless Stagg bass conversion on my channel which was mostly easy curves, but on a Telecaster now which needs double binding. I'm guessing the sharper corners of the heel are the biggest challenge to confirm to. Thanks for the feedback.

    • @VanHoutenBuilds
      @VanHoutenBuilds  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JesHill That's awesome! Yeah the tight curves on the horn are tough to get, but you just have to take your time and make sure you don't overheat the binding or it will warp. Just go about an inch at a time then glue and tape.

    Great stuff! Ever try Acetone, and whaddya think about that medium? Sounds like it might give you a little more time to press & tape with a plastic binding, since it does a sort of slow chemical meld to the wood. But would that work with celluloid binding? Our would I burn my garage down? Cheers - RR

    • @VanHoutenBuilds
      @VanHoutenBuilds  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! Yes, I've tried acetone before. Not sure about it working with celluloid, but you could try haha. I'll probably end up switching to acetone indefinitely once I finish off the tube of binding glue. Trying not to let it go to waste. Working with it is a mess!

  • @michaelaiello9525

    It’s amazing that you write back everyone commenting here. Thanks for this. I regularly contemplate picking up another unbound Tele , may be one that has battle scars already , and then practicing putting a binding on. Would you expect any current finish to be really messed up in this process? If you were already going for that distressed look, could this be a fine amount of collateral damage? Or is it just best to anticipate a refinish by the time glue is scraped off etc?
    PS: are you planing the entire body after this process, belt sander? Thx

    • @VanHoutenBuilds
      @VanHoutenBuilds  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks! Yeah I love answering people's questions on here! I would definitely plan for a full refinish of the body while doing that. You can get a lot of finish chip out and the glue can get quite messy! You can also use acetone instead of binding glue. The acetone will cause the binding to literally melt and adhere to the wood. Definitely less messy than glue. I would refinish afterward if it were me, and then distress the guitar after that. You will want a clear coat over the binding. for a cohesive look. Hope that helps!

    Hey man - nice video, thanks for the info! Did you already have the output jack hole drilled? If so, how did you keep the router bit washer from diving into it and thus translating that dive onto the binding route path?

    • @VanHoutenBuilds
      @VanHoutenBuilds  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Tim, so I had already drilled out the input jack hole. The bearing is wide enough and there is enough material with the size binding I was routing for to role above and below the hole. If you're worried about it though you could tape over it very tightly with a few layers of heavy duty tape and be very careful when routing around that area.

    • @timbradley
      @timbradley 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Right on, thanks for the reply. I decided stupidly to route my binding after I drilled my output jack hole and proceeded to totally forget about it...for me my router bit bearing dove into the jack hole it and that dive was transferred into my binding channel...d’oh!!! I’m hoping I can rectify the situation with some wood filler...hasn’t happened to me before - live and learn right!

    • @VanHoutenBuilds
      @VanHoutenBuilds  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Man I can't tell you how many times I've done stuff like that, just haven't gotten them all on film haha. Yeah you should be able to fix that with some filler for sure! Just make sure you put a decent sealer coat over the filler before spraying any lacquer! Good luck with the build my friend!

    • @timbradley
      @timbradley 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Excellent call with the sealer over the filler. Yeah it’s the f-ups that helps us learn, right?! Good luck with your build and many thanks again for the video and replies! Cheers

    Cool! How does it work with an existing standard tele body that has beveled edges?

    • @VanHoutenBuilds
      @VanHoutenBuilds  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You would have to sand the edges down until they are flat which would make the guitar body a little smaller all the way around depending on the degree of bevel. I did that with this one and it worked great!

  • @belminjasarevic4057
    @belminjasarevic4057 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    How would you go about adding the finish to it after the binding? Just tape it off and paint? Thanks!

    • @VanHoutenBuilds
      @VanHoutenBuilds  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can tape it or paint over the binding and scrape it afterwards. I like to do a combination of both as it is pretty difficult and time consuming to tape binding. I tape with painters tape as best as I can before painting, then after the paint has cured I scrape whatever paint made it onto the binding.

    How did you take the radius off the body edge? Did that marginally shrink the body’s footprint?

    • @VanHoutenBuilds
      @VanHoutenBuilds  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There wasn't much of a radius to begin with so I just sanded it slightly flatter and then used the rabbiting bit to take off the rest for the binding. It didn't shrink the body but maybe by less than a centimeter. Not even noticeable at all.

  • @GrumpyTy34er
    @GrumpyTy34er ปีที่แล้ว

    Okay, so do you just tape the crap out of the binding when you paint/stain the body? I have a mini-explorer body I might bind as practice and I will need to paint the body.

    • @VanHoutenBuilds
      @VanHoutenBuilds  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can either tape it before or just scrape the paint after. Just depends on if you want to do the extra work up front or after. I do it both ways, just depends on what I'm feeling.

    • @GrumpyTy34er

    How much binding did you order and do you have a StewMac or Amazon link for the binding router bit?

    • @VanHoutenBuilds
      @VanHoutenBuilds  ปีที่แล้ว

      I just ordered one order of it. Depends on how much binding you're doing, double binding the body, the neck, the sound hole's, etc. Here is the router bit: www.stewmac.com/luthier-tools-and-supplies/types-of-tools/routers-and-bits/bits/binding-router-bit/
      You will have to order the proper bearing for the size of binding you are installing: www.stewmac.com/luthier-tools-and-supplies/types-of-tools/routers-and-bits/bits/binding-router-bearings/

    How do I figure out the size of the router and bearing for the binding and what are you using like the size of binding bit and bearing

    • @VanHoutenBuilds
      @VanHoutenBuilds  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You will need to know the binding thickness and height first. Then you will need to buy the correct binding that matches the rabbeting bit and bearing. Stewmac makes it pretty easy. I would check out their website. You don't have to buy from from them, but it can help you figure out what you need.

    How much does it cost to get binding done on guitar?

    • @VanHoutenBuilds
      @VanHoutenBuilds  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Honestly I'm not sure how much it would cost. That's something I've never had requested of me, personally. I think most luthiers stay away from that as it means they would have to do a ton of sanding and a full refinish.

    how about for strat?

    • @VanHoutenBuilds
      @VanHoutenBuilds  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      A strat has too much curvature for binding unless it's done like an aerodyn type strat. Then maybe you could do binding on it. Might not look like a normal strat though and probably wouldn't be as comfortable to play b/c of the harsh body lines?
