In my opinion,if Ao Oni is some kind of a demonic being,and the novel says it's some kind of parasite,this is implying some kind of cult may have summoned demonic parasites,which they somehow contained and experimented by injecting them into humans, creating the Onies,of course that's just my interpretation😅
In the Ao Oni anime movie, they gave an explanation that the transformation into these purple creeps are a result of nature fighting back in a form of the Bluebell flower, a type of sentient flower that can make men hallucinate a beautiful women in the forest, causing the male to be infected with it spores. These spores mind control men to "seed" women as its form of flower's parasitic reproduction cycle. The infected men not only getting their dick literally rots off but also mutated them into the Ao Oni monster. It's probably not canon but I kinda like this explanation, a combination of 'man playing god' with the 'nature fights back'. Kinda gives me the Obscure game series vibes with the corrupting plants and all.

It's never revealed with what happens in the game after the incident, except for the fact that we know more people die every year entering that forbidden Mansion, as shown in the ending cutscene. What I think the Lore could be Now, don't blame me if the Lore is already confirmed or if my take is "wrong". The last time I watched something about this game was a decade ago. I personally think that the main Parasite, that kills all of the friends, is the culprit behind the insane experiments. To me, the Parasites seem highly intelligent. He's probably trying to find a way to achieve higher forms, *somehow* finding ways to deform, fuse, differentiate the infected victims, sealing them off in a cage later on for further investigation. I'm more in the side of it being supernatural, which also is tied to a curse, because apparently you can become one by: 1. Get bitten by an Ao oni 2. Die in "cursed" zones like the mansion. Lore wise it happens to a guy that hangs himself, he later becomes an Ao Oni in the mansion.
