I have a very long, pointy object. Don't be a pervert, it's a spear.
Spear is what I call my penis. Who's the pervert now? *Oh, still me.*
Of course doctor bright is here
So is there a weapon SCP the foundation needs Skallagrim's help with? :V

Artie the Swolest Man in the World indeed.
Amazing how outside of a rock or club it's probably the first weapon ever used and the only evolution was putting better metal points on the end ov it instead of heating the wood point with fire even 1000000 years later because some non-human ancestor was using the spear long before us.
Spear Pros:
-Good for hunting and fighting
-Gives you range
-Can be thrown
-Good to use in Formations or individually
-Easy to produce
-Handling is easy tp learn

@@juwebles4352 I love when in the movie, someone stabs someone multiple times with a spear.
Let us not forget that a backward grip is perfectly viable on some spears as it still gives you plenty of reach, makes it easy to work with shields and allows for much more powerful thrusts.

It's okay to laugh. Just remember that for maximum penetration you need a narrow blade that is thick and stiff
Yeah. I didn't start giggling at 11:14 until he told me to stop giggling. Only then did I realize the double entendre.
"Hooks and barbs (in thrown spears) to prevent them from fighting."
And probably to prevent them from throwing them back at you.
The pilum was a good example. Though it didnt have barbs or hooks, it would bend making it impossible to throw back or pull out of a shield, have your adversary have to abandon it.
@@jacobberry5138 some did have barbs I think, so double points to the pilun.
Spears are the most underrated weapons in history. Everyone wants a sword... everyone used a spear. I love spears. They just work. They are cheaper. They are faster to learn. They can double as a quarter staff or a jo staff.
That's my comment from a different Channel
Finally the first non sexual comment. I was getting annoyed
Also, they require less metal and are easier to make than a sword.

@@Ivan_I99999 Thinner just means less brutal and less force required. For those that have the force, it doesn't matter. :)

BEHOLD! The wrath of a man with a pointer stick than you!
-Every conqueror before the invention of rifling
Rather more pointy sticks then a more pointy stick :)
And then people invent bayonet which is essentialy turning rifle into spear...
Instead it’s bigger bullet
Smoothbore muskets dominated pointy things long, long before rifling was invented and standardized.
Technically it's every conqueror before the bow but it's just smaller pointy sticks that travels further.
SO fundamentally, it's a very straighforward weapon. The penetrating end on the big wooden shaft gets thrusted into the other person. Whether that's a man or woman is a bit of a personal perference.
*sigh*
No, not preference. What dictates that is _necessity._ Sometimes, the flesh your rigid point spreads apart to enter is not that of a man.

@@Junior-lg9uf well... I'm believing that this kind of spear/dagger is more lokely to be a kind of ritualistic or ceremonial weapons rather than specialized in battlefield. Even as for banners, this would be kind of hard to be implemented, since sometimes Bannerman needs to protect themselves from enemies attack and the banner you held would be the quickest weapon you could have (since you grab it the entire time) please, correct me if I'm wrong, for this is just my own opinions with a bit of logical thought of mine.

There's not as many sub types, because any deviation would no longer be consider spears, they become Halberds, Lochaber axes, Spontoons etc.
Good point. I suppose if you where to lump spears in with pole arms you see that there's a similarly ludicrous amount of sub catagories to delve into.

I agree completely.
Take a speer.
Make it throwable, it's a javelin.

Another one for the books
I love the part where people with swords say, "I'll just cut the head off the spear."
You can certainly try; but then I still have a long stick to beat you with from a reach.
(also Schola Gladiatoria and Lindybeige did some basic testing of this theory and....nope. you wont, swordsmen)
But if that swordsman gets within three feet of you you're screwed, every weapon has its pros and cons
@@nooneinparticular9219 that's a big "if". A really big if.
@@Cloneman-ic9rx yes a very big one
Plus theres the fact that most people weapons have a butt spike and all of them can be choked up on. It is possible to cut the head off of a spear with a sword, but you need to use a dedicated hacking sword against someone who lacks skill, knowledge, and a reinforced haft.
All a skilled swordsman needs to do is dodge your attack; grab the wooden part the spear and thrust his sword into you. He could also rush in with a shield; parry the spear and then stab. However, a skilled spearman can counter those strategies.

Just messing around with fellow hema guys, I found that hooking with a spear in a group fight was almost certain death for the guy hooked, as he couldn't get the shield back in place before someone else took him out and his sword wouldn't reach me while I was hooking his shield. Was very effective in a 3v3 Spears vw sword and shields
Spears are the ultimate weapon for kill assists.
"I think that enemy got the point!"
About the Spear from Java at 10:30, it looks like the axis of the thrust would still be down the haft of the spear, so it could still be used effectively. I think the curve would either be used to encourage a slicing or chopping motion, and would act as a guard to keep the target from sliding down the shaft.
It was either designed that way to fill a ceremonial role, a try-piece from an experimenting smith, or as a practical joke one person played on another. Never underestimate the human desire to insult each other.
I imagine it would bend pretty easily tho

The last spear you hold really reminds me of a Japanese Yari. Not 100% of the style, but of the purpose, because you have a long blade, which cuts very well and in fact you not only learn thrusts in Yari fighting, you cut really much.
That training changed my mind on spears drastically. I hoped a bit you talk about them, too. They would fit in the video and you have today very accurate training programs for Yari.
He's probably got a Hewing Spear (a Norse staple), it probably makes you think of the Yari because they are both phenomenal and well-designed swordspears- an underrated subtype of spear. Also, nice to see another Yari fan out and about
