Well magnet fishing is normally fairly boring so he gotta make it interesting somehow, getting something interesting is rarer cuz normally it’s just junk
Not really worth it and he's probably not even doing it himself. Most of the things are like, railroad spikes, and are so rusted out that it would take months of bathing in solution to get the rust off.
Honestly, if he found something heavy that his magnet could hold onto, Id say... maybe 150-300 lbs max.... he could fashion a rescue rope system with a couple of carabineers, and one pulley, and he could really lift some heavy shit without having to rely on bare knuckle strength. Itd take alittle longer, but it would be a lot easier on him with the capability of relying on fulcrums to use lesser strength to achieve the same result of double max strength, and if the right cinch knots are employed, could save every foothold length of rope. Tedious, but in Rescue Rope class, extremely effective.

Hopefully im not the first to suggest this but umm..... have you considered maybe investing in a Geiger counter? You pick up alot junk and illegally dumped items and for all you know, some of them probably have radioactive ☢ properties in them and could be exposing yourself and your friends to harmful radiation. Some fishing lead sinkers are actually shaped similarly to radioactive sinkers used for testing. Invest in a Geiger counter that you can wear on your belt or something so that if you fish something radioactive up , then you can check it easily.

When you first pulled it out, you could hear and see it. But the shape and size of it, could it be an old school fire extinguisher? That was my first thought.
Hard to imagine his magnet, or his arms could lift a compressor... and none I know of are threaded on the end. More likely, it is a chunk of 4” pipe with a cap on it...

Next winter try using gloves from the housewares section of the grocery store. There are waterproof gloves that are flannel lined.
