David Rudisha's London 2012 race may be the second greatest race in Olympic history. I added up the IAAF performance scores for the top 8 finishers of these two races and the women's 10,000m in Rio scored higher than any Olympic race in history and is still has the highest score of any track race in history. 5:19 Interesting that the commentator pointed this out. Japanese runners do this (leading from the start) because they have to "appear to be trying hard" for the only people that count to them in the world, other Japanese. Their second responsibility is to fall back and wait until it is time to pick off struggling runners in the last few hundred meters. This also plays well in Japan, "look how perseverant we Japanese are!". Japanese runners follow this pattern in all international distance events. Yuki Kawauchi actually won with this strategy in the 2018 Boston Marathon as all the top runners had already dropped out. His winning time was the slowest time Boston had seen in over 30 years.
Japanese tend to keep the race honest. Races during the Mo Farah era were ridiculously slow and tactical, boring. Boston marathon 2018 also has the highest rate of DNF(Did Not Finished) among elite runners of all time. That should tell you how difficult the condition was that year for the athletes.
