This is a gorgeous rendition, obviously Beth's voice is a highlight as always, but gotta give credit to the whole band. The whole musicalization of the song was stunning from beginning to end.
i agree with OP in the description. im a big portishead fan who just finished the entirety of The Velvet Underground's discography and this cover is a match made in heaven
"even better than the original" such a bold statement, way to piss off a load of velvet underground fans before they even listen? it's not a fucking competition
@kleefan8 Aww I'm glad you enjoyed it. You simply must watch the entire performance, it is very magical and lovely. Especially the end. Cheers and happy holidays :)
This is even better than the original by the Velvet Underground-- okkkkk then.I think reading this line before listening to the song made me not like a nice cover I actually would have liked.
I love Portishead, and had high hopes for this, however I was disappointed. While I will never forgive Doug Yule for what he did to the VU, for me his vocal on the original recording remains the definitive one
I would agree, also re Antony. Different issue - she's got the high notes, why not go up on the "me" of "walk away from me"? Instead goes for a "correct" but very conventional harmonic resolution.
Why's she smoking during the perfomance? Not having a go just wondered maybe it helps to relax her on stage? Not good for the singing voice at all i wouldn't think, still she sounds great!
Not here to compare. Just want to say, as a life long fan of Portishead, and undying lover of the Out Of Season album, this song moves me like no other P./Gibbons affiliated track. Am I wrong, or was this included on orig. CD release?
Not just a beautiful cover but a beautiful performance, like a scene in a movie.

It's sick, it's punk, it's beautiful, it's angelic. No human should look or sound like this. It's otherworldly. Man and woman gave birth to a angel.

Yes this comment to a tee, I came to say something like this, but couldn’t have said it better or as well
Great cover from a great singer
Greatest of all vocalists Beth
Love this song and a fab rendition.
Thank you for this, it's beautiful. She's beautiful in every way a person can be.
best version of a Velvet Undergroung music
Very nice Ms. Gibbons🎉
Beautiful voice! Sad as its meant..
Excellent cover. I’m a VU nut, so I can’t go past the original, but give me this over Antony’s version any day (and Antony’s is pretty decent, too).

Just gorgeous. I love Beth

Not to spoil you - but Imho the best Version ever was with Antony, Berlin live

i second that emotion
I agree, this is the best cover of the song, even much better than the original.
Last words (2021)
Oh I'm sorry; I didn't realise it had to be a competition for me to express an opinion.
I love Portishead, and had high hopes for this, however I was disappointed. While I will never forgive Doug Yule for what he did to the VU, for me his vocal on the original recording remains the definitive one
Are the two other dudes in Portishead in the band? I think so.
@QQueenQQful
You are most welcome :)

Me too!
she singing it like shes about to burst into tears. the song itself is dramatic enough. shes overdoing it, just like anthony is overdoing it.
--which is exactly what I would expect a Beth Gibbons cover to be.
She put her stamp on it, instead of just doing a karaoke cover. Good on her.
I would agree, also re Antony.

She's doing her own version. grapes for you?
No way is this better than the Velvet Underground original. Behave yourself 😉😉
No, but it's still so pretty. 🥺
No.
They both hit different. Like two different apples.🍎 🍏
Way better
The singing is good on the original but great here
EGGS!!!!!!
So we're all just ignoring Adrian over on stage right?
Thanks, but I hate eggs haha.
I just quit smoking. This was hard to watch
she's covering more Anthony's version than Doug's one...
This is in no way better than the original.
I like her voice, but it doesn't fit this song imo.
Blech. She had to smoke while singing?
Abso-Fing-lutely. Problem? At least she's not wearing a mask like a sheep!
@@christopherlaskoski189 it was 2003 dum dum

I am not sure but my original UK / European copy I presume it is does not have candy says sadly. Maybe it is on a US version or different release [:
