"The first time I ever really listened to Kyle Kulinski’s show was in the back of a cab last summer. The driver had his phone hooked up through the stereo and was pumping out an episode through the car speakers - loudly, as if looking to convert a captive audience.
    “Do you like Kyle Kulinski?”
The driver, Ahmed, was a recent immigrant and apparently a die-hard fan of Secular Talk, the political talk show that Kulinski broadcasts on TH-cam. I told him, yes, in fact. I do like Kulinski, had come across his show several years ago, and, all things considered, he seemed pretty good.
“He understands what we’re up against,” Ahmed said. “Like Bernie.”
But I was surprised to hear Kulinski’s name mentioned in the same breath as Bernie Sanders, particularly with such adoration. Because what I did remember about Kulinski’s show struck me as mostly capital-P “progressive” takes on the news - the left wing of the Netroots crowd more than the democratic socialism Sanders has popularized.
It’s an impression that wasn’t entirely incorrect.
“I have no time for philosophical, airy bullshit,” Kulinski tells me from his home in Westchester, New York. “I don’t want to hear about Lenin. I don’t want to hear about Marx. I just want a super plainspoken, straightforward agenda with a straightforward way of selling it.”
With over 800,000 subscribers and nearly 670 million total views on TH-cam, selling a progressive agenda is clearly something Kulinski knows how to do - even Democracy Now, the long-standing flagship of progressive media, cannot match his reach on the platform. Chapo Trap House can certainly boast a wildly devoted fan base (and a not insignificant degree of media influence), but their audience is roughly half the size of Kulinski’s.
While Secular Talk might be more likely to be looped in with the progressive networks around Air America and Pacifica alums like Sam Seder than the more resolutely socialist world, Kulinski’s fiery rhetoric, razor-sharp class instincts, and knack for withering takedowns sets him apart from his peers. Judging by his rhetoric alone, he’s closer to a Eugene Debs than a Chris Hayes.
But unlike Hayes, Amy Goodman, or his friend Cenk Uygur of The Young Turks - who began airing Secular Talk on his web network seven years ago - the thirty-two-year-old Kulinski is virtually invisible in the mainstream media. Despite his enormous fan base, his show has never once been mentioned in the obligatory trend pieces on “the Millennial Left” pumped out by the prestige media. Nor has Kulinski’s name ever popped up at all in the New York Times, Vox, the New Yorker, New York Magazine, or the Washington Post, despite his leading role in cofounding Justice Democrats, the organization widely credited with sweeping Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and the rest of “the Squad” to power.
Just last week, his Wikipedia page was deleted. The reason? “There is very simply no [reliable source] coverage of this person,” according to one moderator. In new media, he’s king - the Sean Hannity of the Berniecrat left. In old media, he’s nobody.
I suspect there are a few reasons for that. There is nothing “cool” about Kulinski’s show. (As a friend put it, “‘Welcome to Secular Talk’ sounds like something you’d hear on Egyptian radio.”) His no-nonsense social-democratic politics won’t get him much cred with the Full Communism crowd. He records his show not in Brooklyn or Los Angeles, but in a studio he built himself in his modest Westchester home. His hair is too groomed and his taste in clothes too preppy to qualify as “Dirtbag Left.” Nor has he ever attended an n+1 release party. “Not only have I not attended one,” he says, “I have no idea what that means.”
And yet he’s astonishingly plugged-in for a young man in the suburbs. Wondering how Sanders ended up on the Joe Rogan Experience? Kulinski, a frequent guest on Rogan’s wildly popular show, introduced them. “You make the most sense to me,” Rogan told Kulinski on a recent episode. “You’re a normal person.”
Much like Sanders himself, Kulinski’s show has a massive audience that just doesn’t compute with our media’s understanding of “what the kids want” or even “what the left-wing kids want.”
It’s probably for the best - the very woke and very WASP-ish decorum haunting much of the media world is nowhere to be found in Secular Talk. “Corporate Democrats over-focus on identity as a trick to divert you from the issues that unite us all - class issues,” he said on a recent episode.

He was a little bit of a smart-ass but would inject bits of insight to discussions to motivate keeping in touch with reality. But something about the 2008-onwards financial crisis seemed to just break the souls of some of the CNBC hosts. A group of them became angry, spiteful, uninformed, and overtly political all the time. They just opted into incinerating whatever value they used to provide.

Even though our understanding of the broader world and the fact that technology has vastly evolved since the 1600-1800's they could speak, argue, and debate most modern commentators under the damn table. What United States voters need to understand on Medicare for all, is this: insurance premiums, co pays and whatever else, all stop. If u need care, u go to your doctor or hospital and that's it. No insurance, no bill, no nothing. It's all now covered by taxes. This is the daily reality of every person living in the developed world, except for the United States. And because it no longer depends on employment, every one is covered, for everything needed to keep u healthy.

    • @matthewhartman7176

Bernie Sanders gives out the pamphlet and brochure on the daily to the American people since even before 2015. I think the majority of Americans understand at least the basic concept of M4A by the year 2024.
It's the American lobbyists of the American healthcare lobby and the American politicians they donate to that don't want to understand it.
Poll after poll shows a super majority of every day normal Americans, regardless of their political labels want at least a public option. And yet, we don't even get a proposed bill on even that.
I think you get the point now.
Clearly, as bad as things are broken in this country, people haven't reached their breaking point yet in a way that would activate their butt to get out into the streets and demand that their government works FOR THEM.
We're still have dumb ass arguments over what constitutes actual Socialism or not. There are some Americans that freak out over anything suggesting a very mild form of social democracy.
Basically, we're starting the healthcare race at -100 feet.
I spend roughly 6 months of the year in Singapore. They have a public option. I've had to visit the ER here twice. The entire out of pocket office bill was LOWER than my freaking deductible in the States. I didn't wait any longer for care than I would have in the States and the care itself was on par. I cannot relate to you how frustrated this makes me feel to know that I'm being financially robbed by the healthcare industry, all to line shareholder's and CEO's pockets.
For those of you who purposely misrepresent and mischaracterize the healthcare systems in other democracies around the world, and you know who you are, F'ing STOP. IT. It's disgusting, unwell behavior.

I get where you're coming from, and in a rank-choice voting system that logic would be really befitting and welcoming. I used to argue the same thing in the past. What you're stating isn't a falsehood, but it's not effective, because it's not the system we have. I've had to reckon with that over the years.
We have a two-party (monopolized) winner takes all system in a representative democracy. What this effectively means is that the losers of each contest effectively lose faithful representation for 4 years, but more realistically 8 years. That's a lot of time for policy, good or bad to affect someone's life.
Ultimately, this is a nuanced back-and-forth conversation between a concept and effective reality. It deserves the subtext.
Conceptually, you vote for the candidate that you feel is worthy of representing and hopefully championing your values like you illustrated. That is democracy in its purest form. Guess what? We don't have that form of democracy., and never did.
Effectively, in the actual form of democracy we have there WILL BE a loser and a winner, even in a contested election. So, if you don't vote, your vote in "non-form" goes to one or the other since you will live under the winner's rule whether you like it or not. So, you vote for the person that more closely aligns with your values so you're not under the rule of the person whose values further align with yours. Do you want level 3 pain or level 10?
Make no mistake my friend, I'm not apologizing for the system we have. I think it's corrupt and emboldens politicians to engross in incrementalism. I would love nothing more than to have a rank-choice voting system, where that would allow voters to actually vote for who they actually see most fit for the office.

    • @juliusthompson4794
      @juliusthompson4794 9 วันที่ผ่านมา

@matthewhartman7176 yea. I definitely get where you coming from, and you certainly aren't wrong. It's also why I never knock anyone for how they vote, or if they choose not to vote. Now I wouldn't say not voting is a great option, but it's an option, and I get how people can get to a point of disconnect with this system, and feel as if neither party truly represents them. That's not even counting the electoral college and that whole system where a person could win the popular vote and lose the election. It's the assumption these people operate with that your vote is already cast for them.... and if you don't give it to them. They want to shame people and claim that it now counts for the other candidate. They look at people votes as losing them. Instead of feeling like they need to earn them. Which as an independent is kind of crazy to me.

Why is it every other industrialized countries has figured out how to provide Universal Health Care but America just can't figure it out. Sad thing is they could do it but the US runs on greed.

Don't just vote, get active. Democracy is not going to save itself. CHECK YOUR VOTER'S REGISTRATION, help people get registered, WE NEED POLL WORKERS AND POLL WATCHERS, know your local candidates by name, Volunteer, reach out to friends and families and talk to them about what's important, if you run out of friends GO MAKE ONE, VOTE EARLY when you can, and VOTE BLUE. We don't just need Harris in office but Congress and Senate as well. 👠🇺🇸💙

Joe Kernen mentions Executive Orders (in the context of President Biden doing things without Congressional support).
    A quick reminder;
President Obama: 35 Orders per year, 276 total
President Trump: 55 Orders per year, 220 total
President Biden: 43 Orders per year, 130 total
Hey, Kernen....Who is it that does all those Executive Orders you seem so worried about?

Nothing like watching wealthy peoole complain about having to POSSIBLY pay a little more in taxes. Even as the working class as of now pays a higher % in taxes. They always cry like a baby and make it sound like it will be the end for EVERYBODY. Yet when the dust settles they go back to living their lavish lifestyles will a big smile on their faces. As the working class continues to crater under higher prices for essential goods and more of the working class loose their homes, move into a tent and eventually become homeless, give up on life opportunities and turn to drugs. Then these same people say that these homeless people need to get back to work and the situation needs to fixed. Whaaaat!

I've said this before, but since when are Dems being unrealistic and in need of a "dose of reality"? I think the majority are still really worried that TFG will win and only cautiously optimistic that HARRIS will win, if that!
