"The first time I ever really listened to Kyle Kulinski’s show was in the back of a cab last summer. The driver had his phone hooked up through the stereo and was pumping out an episode through the car speakers - loudly, as if looking to convert a captive audience.
“Do you like Kyle Kulinski?”
The driver, Ahmed, was a recent immigrant and apparently a die-hard fan of Secular Talk, the political talk show that Kulinski broadcasts on TH-cam. I told him, yes, in fact. I do like Kulinski, had come across his show several years ago, and, all things considered, he seemed pretty good.
“He understands what we’re up against,” Ahmed said. “Like Bernie.”
But I was surprised to hear Kulinski’s name mentioned in the same breath as Bernie Sanders, particularly with such adoration. Because what I did remember about Kulinski’s show struck me as mostly capital-P “progressive” takes on the news - the left wing of the Netroots crowd more than the democratic socialism Sanders has popularized.
It’s an impression that wasn’t entirely incorrect.
“I have no time for philosophical, airy bullshit,” Kulinski tells me from his home in Westchester, New York. “I don’t want to hear about Lenin. I don’t want to hear about Marx. I just want a super plainspoken, straightforward agenda with a straightforward way of selling it.”
With over 800,000 subscribers and nearly 670 million total views on TH-cam, selling a progressive agenda is clearly something Kulinski knows how to do - even Democracy Now, the long-standing flagship of progressive media, cannot match his reach on the platform. Chapo Trap House can certainly boast a wildly devoted fan base (and a not insignificant degree of media influence), but their audience is roughly half the size of Kulinski’s.
While Secular Talk might be more likely to be looped in with the progressive networks around Air America and Pacifica alums like Sam Seder than the more resolutely socialist world, Kulinski’s fiery rhetoric, razor-sharp class instincts, and knack for withering takedowns sets him apart from his peers. Judging by his rhetoric alone, he’s closer to a Eugene Debs than a Chris Hayes.
But unlike Hayes, Amy Goodman, or his friend Cenk Uygur of The Young Turks - who began airing Secular Talk on his web network seven years ago - the thirty-two-year-old Kulinski is virtually invisible in the mainstream media. Despite his enormous fan base, his show has never once been mentioned in the obligatory trend pieces on “the Millennial Left” pumped out by the prestige media. Nor has Kulinski’s name ever popped up at all in the New York Times, Vox, the New Yorker, New York Magazine, or the Washington Post, despite his leading role in cofounding Justice Democrats, the organization widely credited with sweeping Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and the rest of “the Squad” to power.
Just last week, his Wikipedia page was deleted. The reason? “There is very simply no [reliable source] coverage of this person,” according to one moderator. In new media, he’s king - the Sean Hannity of the Berniecrat left. In old media, he’s nobody.
I suspect there are a few reasons for that. There is nothing “cool” about Kulinski’s show. (As a friend put it, “‘Welcome to Secular Talk’ sounds like something you’d hear on Egyptian radio.”) His no-nonsense social-democratic politics won’t get him much cred with the Full Communism crowd. He records his show not in Brooklyn or Los Angeles, but in a studio he built himself in his modest Westchester home. His hair is too groomed and his taste in clothes too preppy to qualify as “Dirtbag Left.” Nor has he ever attended an n+1 release party. “Not only have I not attended one,” he says, “I have no idea what that means.”
And yet he’s astonishingly plugged-in for a young man in the suburbs. Wondering how Sanders ended up on the Joe Rogan Experience? Kulinski, a frequent guest on Rogan’s wildly popular show, introduced them. “You make the most sense to me,” Rogan told Kulinski on a recent episode. “You’re a normal person.”
Much like Sanders himself, Kulinski’s show has a massive audience that just doesn’t compute with our media’s understanding of “what the kids want” or even “what the left-wing kids want.”
It’s probably for the best - the very woke and very WASP-ish decorum haunting much of the media world is nowhere to be found in Secular Talk. “Corporate Democrats over-focus on identity as a trick to divert you from the issues that unite us all - class issues,” he said on a recent episode.

Ironically in his last interview with Cenk Uygur, Lex told Cenk that he didn't feel like they really challenge their guests on their show. Then Lex went on to ask Trump what his favorite ice cream was.
I found it crazy and strange how Donald Trump was the next person to be interviewed by Lex Fridman after he just interviewed Cenk Uygur. I watched 1 interview of Lex before & it was with Randall Kennedy. It was an interesting interview with some new things I have learned but, I haven't seen other of his interviews yet. It seems Lex interviews mostly right wingers & is trying to be like Howard Stern, Joe Rogan, and now Logan Paul.
He took time to blow Rogan in both interviews, too.
@RagingFlamesRedGuyAttitude I think it was 100% strategic. Get a liberal guy on before you talk with trump so he can say "I interview both sides!" Cenk is okay, but he's hardly an equal to trump in relevance.
@@ChanceYolo it's exactly what Theo Von did too. He had Bernie on then a week later he has Trump on.

he is not born with a silver spoon in his mouth.
he has to earn his living and build his brand from scratch.

He says it himself : "I could be working in tech, create and AI company, but I want to do this"

First, Trump talks to a guy who's only audience are twelve years olds, then he talks to a comedian who's viewers probably don't vote, and now he talks to Lex Fridman who's viewers were already going to vote Republican.Trump is really expanding his voter base by going on this online circuit 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
You have no idea what you are talking about . Lex audience ain't republicans at all
Exactly what I thought. This didn't add voters to his base.
It might have
Who was the first one? He's not worried about expanding his base. He's counting on the swing state hillbillies, or he's hoping to create enough chaos to where the supreme court decides.
"Make voting easy"
Proceeds to list a bunch of ways that make voting more difficult
While he is early voting with a mail in ballot. Can’t stand this two faced, idiot.
Lex is literally on his knees sad sight to see. Very pathetic of him.
Lex started, using his dads connections, as a science podcast which fumbled the science for clicks, turned to politics and failed in politics.
Kyle and people in this channel are so deep in their bubble that they think a true-neutral guy like Fridman is a MAGA conservative. The purpose of this interview, and Fridmans channel/niche in general, was to get a relaxed guest to talk freely, to get to know the person, and we got that somewhat. The alternative to this interview was never a tough, critical, fact-checking political debate, where trump gets destroyed, as everyone here seems to salivate over. The alternative to what we got here, is no interview at all. I didn’t like it either, nor did I like the interview with that manipulative dirtbag Netanjahu. But I do have a better grasp of how incompetently trump thinks. Goal achieved.
But we already know how incompetent tRump is. We learned absolutely nothing new here !
"a true neutral" is just a future right-winger, I'm afraid
It seems to me, Mr. Pilot, that you are one of the very few who kind of gets what is going on here. Fridman isn't stupid, he probably outwits most of us.
The astute viewer will have noticed that, although Fridman has the habit of letting his guests speak freely, he will usually also ask follow ups and clarifications. In this Trump interview, those were ostensibly absent. And there is a reason for that...
More then ever, Fridman wanted to give his guest a platform, without any interruption or distraction. This way, Trump had a chance to present his case the best way possible, and he would have no excuse if he messed up the interview.
Fridman will let his audience judge about the content of the interview, and since there was no pushback, the content consists solely of what Trump had to say. If he would have said anything intelligent, it would be appreciated and praised. If he would have said something stupid, it would be of his own doing and he would be judged as a fool.
Trump could have said anything he wanted. The sad truth is: most people that I know personally would have done a better job at answering the questions for him then he did himself. The guy is an imbécile, he is completely ignorant about literally anything. He hasn't got a clue about the real current state of affairs in the USA. AND THAT IS EXACTLY WHAT THIS INTERVIEW SHOWED AND PROVED.
Rest assured: do the same interview with Biden or Harris, and the result will be the same: a line-up of platitudes without ever saying anything concrete. As a European, I am embarrassed on behalf of the citizens of the USA: Biden, Harris, Trump... All of them corrupt to the fckn core and one even dumber then the other... What a SHITSHOW.
David thank you for saying the quiet part out loud
@@KurtVanBever well said, sir
I have a serious question: does he actually believe “asylum” in immigration means mental hospital? He keeps bringing up “insane people from mental institutions”, where tf did he get that from?
Trump is so old that he still comes from the times where mental asylums were a thing. That's probably what he thinks it is when he hears people seeking Asylum. He's not a very smart dude, he must be one of the dumbest people to ever stumble into the office of the presidency of the United states. That's saying a lot because George W bush used to hold that title. Trump makes bush look like an intellectual. That's how bad he is.
That would explain a lot
OH. MY. GOD. 😂
His good friend Hannibal told him.
The simple answer is that trump is a moron. 🤠
The other difference about communist and fascist is they’ve been calling every democrat a communist for the past thirty years including practical conservatives.
Humiliating for Fridman. The fact that he gave a platform to the former guy says everything.
Lex is not bipartisan. He may interview "both sides". But he ALWAYS pushes back on left ideas, but let's right wingers skate along on hugs and kisses. Lex isn't someone to be taken seriously.
Everyone please take a shot every time Kyle criticizes Lex or thinks Lex will correct Trump.
This is a dark, dark, timeline. Insane how many people think this guy, who is the most obvious con man and fraud I have ever seen, is some kind of savior.
Savior holding a bible upside down for a photo op. 👍😆😆😆
Trump is my savior and Jesús is my president.
Comments in the Lex interview was depression. “Hes a genius and so honest and Kamala is a dumb traitor who will destroy the country”. No some, but all comments. The ignorance and insults were terrifying. Total denial
Maybe it's changed, but at the first hour after posting, there were plenty upvoted comments calling Trump out on not saying anything and being dumb/senile.
He's appealing to the same maga morons who already live him. He's not adding voters.
The anti-Kamala and pro-Trump surge of comments are just comment bots to make people believe everyone thinks a certain thing.
People who struggle with thinking will just follow the heard.
It's a technique being used to control people.
Elon uses it too to convince people he's not an idiot and bankrupt
You missed the best part:
“Is there anything you like about people that lean left?”
“Well, you gotta respect that everyone’s in there”
😂😂
Does this Lex guy know trump at all? Of course he has nothing good to say about anyone on the left.
Greeting from Germany ,Thank you for PEACE work.
Kyle has one soft spot and that is Joe Rogan. Kyle starts dancing like Trump when the opportunity comes to critique Joe.
He definitely has had a few cracks at him recently but he isn't dumb, he wants another show with him and I for one want it to happen, Rogan won't do it though, Kyle is too quick on his feet to call out the BS he babbles. You are right that he doesn't call his shit but maybe for the wrong reason.
How amazing would it be if Kyle could interview Trump. I would pay SOOOO much to see that!
trump can't handle real interviews. Or real debates. 🤠
Any real interview would be good. It's been years since he's sat down with a real journalist.
Same. Trump would be trying to bail out of the interview after the first question or the second he gets pushback from Kyle or he'd probably try to berate Kyle. 😂
@@zzzT.His Hillary debate wasn't real? The biden debate wasn't real?
Lex was a fucking joke in this, what a fail…
Why does Trump sound so tired and lazy. Is he getting tired of his own shtick?
he is not lazy. he has always been a B/S artist.
insofar as his being tired, he is 78 years old. and campaigning is a F/T time job during the season.
@@AsifKhan-hf9zy he should quit
@@gamma-rayburst4611 Why quit when he has meth to keep him going? If he quits he goes to Jail
@@AsifKhan-hf9zyhe's not campagning full time though.
He jsut gives occasional pressers in front of his house and does 1 rally about every 2 weeks. And still he's tired as fuck.
does he sound as lazy and tired as our current president?? god i love bootlickers
You have to understand how Lex operates.....his "interviews" are designed t get to know people, not to challenge them and fact check them. He is not about gotchas. I listened to the interview and liked it. Trump came across as reasonable and approachable. I think he is doing a far, far better job of reaching out to Gen Z compared to Kamala which is who she is losing them. Calling Gen Z dumb did n't exactly help her out.
I have never understood why Lex Friedman has a podcast and is considered a worthy interviewer. He has always seemed inarticulate and facile to me. What am I missing??
You’re missing that he mostly started out with just talking to scientists and topics he knew about… branching outside academia he still has to learn
@@ryryry_25
He interviewed both actual physicists and complete crackpots while giving equal credence to both because he knows even less about physics and math than he does about politics.
This is a sin whats been happening over the last four years. Trump not going away and accepting America is great without him.😒
Lex Fridman is AI personified
Lex supports zalensky and Netanyahu. Two war criminals and Zionazis. and so do most American politicians..
He's artificial intelligence? That doesn't make any sense... at all.
Lex Friedman's delivery is as boring as Trump's
I have a lot of time for lex and applaud him for giving everyone an opportunity but it’s brutal how off he is from person to person.
He gave Cenk plenty of pushback and with trump essentially zero.
Say what you want but he is right about the border. If the democrats would just give it a little attention it would take the legs out of 80% of his talking points
Kyle Kulinski, has to be the most spot on political analyst that ever lived at this point. So proud of this man and his beautiful family. Keep it up brother. ❤️🔥
Really? the guy turned Shit-Lib in the last 30 days, as he needs the views, look at his videos a month ago or from around the assassination attempt,,, completely different take
Totally same sentiments here 🙌🏾👌🏾💪🏾
It is true that Trump’s schtick seems tired these days.
He is also 100 years old. 🤷♂He's doing exactly what Joe Biden was doing last month, but the GOP have no other options.
So boring. Listening to trump & lex was a snoozefest.
@@ozsheila55 That’s my point. The guy was genuinely entertaining and good to listen to when he first ran. Now he is bitter and boring. The magic is no longer there.
He's always been bitter. He was born bitter. Every narcissist is bitter.
OMG your imitation of Lex asking Trump to bring down the temperature was hilarious
No. He didn’t lose “virtually everyone of those cases” Kyle. He lost EVERYONE of those cases.
Trump has nothing at all to say. He loves to talk, without saying anything. I’m assuming the reason is that he knows nothing.
These podcast this Flex guy does are incredible boring. If you are not going to have a serious discussion with a politician and just let him lie without end. Then what is the point ?
To help himself lose? 🤷♂️
Not one interesting moment. Except maybe when trump said he lost the last election.
Lex reminds me of Ben Carson. I find this kind of profile fascinating. They are very knowledgeable at a specific topic (Lex Computer Science, Carson Medicine). Yet, they are complete morons about everything else. I can’t understand this kind of brain
autism?
@@cacapichi8564 As a computer scientist I can tell you he is at best bellow average. But he is good at spewing word salad made of buzz word and hypes, just like Elon.
@laboo62 he is way out of practice at this point as well. Authority on nothing more than glazing sessions
Theres a lot of that going around these days, especially on the right. I can't think of any correlations on the left.
If someone spends almost all their time on one topic, they're likely to be clueless about other topics
Thanks Kyle. I’ve heard Lex’s interviews before and I kind of got his approach to interviews, but this interview with Trump clearly exposes Lex as a poser/ pseudo intellectual. What a disastrous interview.
I even get annoyed at him for not even being in the slightest critical about ai and its impact on our power consumption or intellectual property....
Kyle treats other podcasters with professionalism just like with mainstream media. That's his blindspot on not calling people like Joe Rogan and Lex Friedman for what they are, shills. It's not that they don't know how to pushback on bullshit, they need that bullshit on their platform for their right wing audience.
Easy fix, get your own interview with Trump Kyle
Trump would never agree to an interview with Kyle, cause he knows Kyle won't softball the interview like Kex did.
He would never take it. Hed watch his content before hand and go fuck that.
Lex is so disappointing.
Like Crooks .
