I disagree with many of your opinions on the console but even if you dislike it, you spoke about it respectfully and expressed your opinions in a very clear, mature manner. Props for that.
@@AdamKoralik Yeah, you can express yourself in a good manor even if you rip some of my heart. I understand that you are not a big fan of the PS2 and I respect that. You have an opinion and that is grate. You are a good content creator, you should do more videos. (Especially on the PS2, can you do a accessories recap, why, because I sadly never owned the multitap for any PlayStations. I know how it works but I would like to know more pls.)
something like a historical fact that PS2 was presented more as a dvd player than an actual gaming machine which it was supposed to be, how tf it is an opinion??
He’s brutally honest he said in one of these comments PS2 didn’t murder the Dreamcast sega did he is right if sega would have made less mistakes with the Saturn the Dreamcast would have done better also marketing
The first year of Dremacast was far superior to the first year of the ps2. But marketing and the DVD player. To be fair a couple of years in it really did pick up. GTA II and Metal Gear II.
Sega made mistakes with their decision with the Saturn, which in turn, affect the Dreamcast. But PS2 is still responsible unintentially to murder majority of the sales of the GameCube and bury Dreamcast even further down the line. Sony's inclusion of a built in DVD and playing playing the games is what made lot of consumers give attention to PS2 the most, especially with the affordable price. It's a brilliant strategy for lot of people prefering to buy PS2 over its competitors and the fact that Sega made mistakes that made people not trust them in a long run is the extra kicker to bury Sega in terms of console hardware after the early discontinuation of the Dreamcast. Sega made mistakes that affect their hardware business, but PS2 gave the final blow.
Have to disagree with some the comments here. While yes, PS2 held majority of the Market Share, at the end of day, it didn’t stop Sega from Continuing the Dreamcast until they can’t. Sega put the hatchet because they were already dead on arrival; they literally had no money to finance it in a stable way from the Get go, relying on funding from their Japanese Division’s president’s own money alone. The Dreamcast was never a financially practical system to support, but they did it anyway and they had a pretty good run for burning out quickly in the west and only fizzling out with other consoles in Japan. And it’s true, had Sega not been run by idiots and kept their Composure against Sony during the previous Generation, we probably still have them making hardware today.
your so true adam awesome reviews on the consoles, i love your review on n64, xbox 360 and the wii u, im an xbox gamer myself but im saving my money up for next gen and the wii u does look cool
I do argee with you,but that's how I always thought.I don't actually hate, but I flipping did love the backwards compatible with PS1 games since I played more PS1 games and.CDs then PS2 games and DVDs.I still buy games for the consoles,a lot of mature and Sega related games as I do not mean to give the Playstation 2 'backslash',but really loved the Playstation 1,had a lot of great memories especially with Toy Story Racer.
I always saw the reasons in the big success of the PS2 First: the cheap DVD Player Second: The Playstation hype Third: The backwards compatibility Fourth: The much higher marketing budget compared to Sega. I personally never liked this console very much, but because of the big sales numbers later it had tons of great games, more than any other console.
I got my Dreamcast for Christmas 2000 as PS2 were sold out everywhere. As it turns out that was for the best. PS2 had no games at the time, I remember a magazine I had a subscription to complaining about the less than stellar launch line up and giving game of the month to a PS1 game. Meanwhile, I was able to get Shenmue, Jet Set Radio, and Tokyo Extreme Racer and have a great time with my Dreamcast that Christmas.
Wish more people did that. DC had well over 200 games out by Christmas of 200, and I can say with confidence that at least 75 percent of them were worth playing. However, everyone's got to ride the hype train, just so they don't feel left out.
MrDeathSmiles We've all been there. I sold a bunch of consoles and games to a Funcoland when I was a kid to buy some new games for my Dreamcast, I later came to regret it.
Holy shit I didn't know that Sega had the chance to have GTA III on the Dreamcast. That game could have turned the dreamcast's fortunes around. Such a shame Sega had to screw up with the genesis peripherals and the saturn. Oh and I have a theory about why the PS4 controller is more comfortable. It's because they changed the angle of the controller prongs. this means that the thumbstick grip relative to the angle of the hand is more ergonomic. Making it more like what microsoft and Nintendo do with their thumbsticks in their controllers. Definitely a change for the better as this is something I've disliked about the original dual shock design Ive disliked for a long time.
The PS2 had a slower start than people remember but once it got going, you HAD to have one. The backwards compatibility and DVD capability were worth the price almost by themselves.
The system had two huge selling points: backwards compatibility with Playstation One (PS1) games, and the ability to play DVD movies. Released at a time when standard DVD players cost several hundred dollars, obtaining one free with a game console seemed like a terrific value. The PS2 DVD player turned out to be mediocre in quality (I recall some sound synchronization issues) but for the most part it served its purpose.
Not always. It makes aliasing worse in many instances by making the image look too sharp. Very obvious on Resident Evil 4 or Final Fantasy XII. I like S-Video better, it's really smooth (you mean the Japanese / european SCART/ RGB system right ?)
I agree with you at the begning of the video its not my favorite it a most sucks Xbox was my favorite I'm no fan boy but the ps2 almost had ps1 grafiics
It does blur things up a bit, which hides a lot of the ugly stuff, but the result is not as good as playing on a CRT. But all i had to do was remove my glasses...
RGB smoothens aliasing a little bit, i mean true rgb not composite. Composite gives you bad colors, horrible contour and blurry images. I have never been able to stand it ever since it appeared on the PS1/N64, i bought a RGB cable for all my consoles. I believe myTV has a pretty decent upscaler, and most of the sources i use are not Full HD. Even my computer is set to 780 because in full HD the letters are too small i hate it. The upscaler has a lot to do with the final result. My TV is from sharp, made in japan, which i believe is the most serious manufacturer along with panasonic. (They basically make the retina screens for the ipads). I play PS2 with RGB and it looks pretty good (i mean for a ps2). The gamecube games i play in Composite using my WII and most of them look better than with RGB, but also sharper which in some cases makes defaults very visible, but i don't like using the sharpness control of the TV because it just makes the image blurry. SO all i have to do is play far from the TV and forget to wear my glasses.
the ps2 actually had a STRONG launch: Tekken Tag, Timesplitters, DOA 2 Hardcore, SSX, Midnight Club, Silent Scope, Summoner, Kessen, Dynasty Warriors 2, Unreal Tournament and Armored Core 2 were some good games, decent at least as far as launch titles go, even if you rule out any non exclusive games. I guess you could argue that the GameCube or Dreamcast had heavier hitters, however the PS2s launch library is nothing to scoff at, and IMO is easily the best launch a Playstation system ever had.
Tekken Tag Tournament 1 was the only one worth playing at launch. That's all I remember playing til next year in 2001 when they finally got games. Hehe. Good times
The best thing about this system, for me, was the backwards compatibility. I previously had an N64 (ripping on my friends who had a PS1) and the PS2 allowed me to easily catch up on some great games I missed from the previous generation.
I'm a die-hard PS2 fanboy, but even I have to admit that the stock controllers weren't great. I managed to find and buy a cyber gadget Rensha 2 controller a few months ago, and these things are just amazing. They solve everything, especially if you have big hands.
12:15 $3 component cables generally don't look good. I know you now switched over to the HD Retrovision cables, but generally speaking if you're going to buy component cables for any console you should always buy either official cables or at least a high end third party version. In some cases, RGB SCART may actually be a better option. The PS2 is unique in that it also uses RGB for 480p content - albeit RGsB, and RGB generally has better colours than YPbPr. And if you need YPbPr, the SCART cable carries both YPbPr and RGB. If you have a SCART amplifier, you can send RGB through one output and YPbPr through another.
The PlayStation brand is the "Jack of all,Master of none"My first system was the N64 then PSone,Gamecube,PS2,Wii,XBox 360,PS3,Wii U,PS4 and XBox One.Never got a dreamcast because it was discontinued by the time my mum was going to get it for Christmas and never got an OG XBox because after the DUALSHOCK 2 I hated the original XBox controller and not many of the exclusives appealed to my gaming taste and you needed to buy an extra remote and dongle to watch DVDs
PS2 came out in the US on October 26, 2000. My brother preordered it, but didn't have the money for it, but I did on launch day. The store called saying it was in, so my brother and I go to pick it up, but leaving his work parking lot we were the 3rd party in a car accident, while still in waiting to turn onto the road. We were delayed, as we were witnesses. Our car was a Honda CRX tiny car. We get to Gurnee Mills mall, and buy it, sales person tells us once you leave the store, we are no longer responsible if anything happens. I only kept it for a week, and resold it for a profit, to my friend and co-worker. I only made $50 do to he was drunk at the time he agreed to buy it.
The greatest Christmas gift I ever got. Introduced me to the joy of DVD collecting and to this day I collect Blu Rays. There's a lot of consoles where you can say "No matter what you like this console has a game for you." PS2 has like, ten, of whatever you like. This was also the console where sports sims really turned the corner into GM simulators instead of just running a season. Fantastic wrestling games at the beginning and end of the console's life that were completely different. A glut of fine racers. An ocean of RPGs. Lot of stealth action action and sandboxes. The thing just got everything.

Marketing strategy. The name was perfect. The consumers knew it was the new PS. The most brilliant idea from Nintendo was the name Super Nintendo. if you change the names of the products it may confuse the consumers. Nintendo and Sega had that problems with bad naming like Dreamcast or Gamecube. I know the name PS2 is lazy but PS was a recognized brand. Brilliant idea. For exemple, if the PSVita was to be called PSP2 it might had a different path.
Personally, I've always loved the name, PS2. It speaks to a level of minimalism and continued line of success. The name, like the famous "299" speech epitomizes the personality of Sony. They didn't try to win people over with elaborate names based on planets or cats. Their surgical prose is clear, concise, and speaks volumes greater than the sum of its parts. Ever since the Nintendo CD fiasco, they've always been the gaming company with a vengeance, and for that, I find their straight-to-business attitude badass.
Nintendo always changes their name except for the Wii U and SNES. (Not counting portables). And guess what the Wii U was a fail because of its name. Nintendo changed the name for the Wii and DS and look those are Nintendo’s most successful consoles
@@MalarkeyMan the DS was successful because Nintendo dominated the portable gaming scene and everyone knew how good Nintendo was in handleds the wii was successful because of their marketing strategy by targeting casuals the Wii U failed because of their target audience and bad marketing casuals don’t care about upgrading to the next generation console and the bad marketing didn’t help people thought it was a tablet add on
peter cacic I don't hate the PS2. With the PS2 people tend to believe that if it's not your favorite console ever then you must be a hater. Neither of which is true.
Gray FOX Come on dude, I obviously have more than the games I showed in the video. I can't do the whole collection or we'd be here all day. What you're not getting is my issue isn't with the games, it's with the console themselves, what they represent, and how poorly they were made.
***** It goes beyond that. Most fanboys are general to a group. "Nintendo 4 life" "XBox Supreme!" "Playstation Nation!' "Sega Forever!" These guys are hyper focused on an obsession with the PS2 that is obscene. Coming from a guy so in love with one console (the Dreamcast) that I took the time to get a complete set for it, that says a lot.
***** You get used to it. The people I feel bad for are the ones who have legitimate reasons to love that console, but they get lumped in with the insane. Though that happens in many aspects of life, nothing new there.
peter cacic XBox One is hands down the worst console name in videogame history. No debate there. And yes, all the rest of those suck. 3DS...that one isn't too bad. Sells the line and the gimmick some what creatively. That being said, I got a 2DS...which is a terrible name.
No. The worst console is the Saturn. Also, Xbone isn't a derogatory term. It's a term that's been used to shorten the name of the console ever since E3 2013, like PS4 is a shortened name for Playstation 4.
Your wrong from my view. How design works is reverse here. The simpler the structure, the easier to develop quality titles, the stronger the console. Even at expense of potential graphical and performance potential. Because the game library becomes healthier and the smaller companies can compete giving you unique titles. Simplified and Easy to Adapt for Consoles makes more Unique games.
Unique Games PS2 - Excellent Library, PS3 - Great Library, PS4 - Amazing Potential Library N64 - Excellent Library, NGameCube - Good Library, NWii - Okay Library, NWiiU - Good Library, NNext - ? Xbox 360 - Good Library, Xbox One - Great Potential Library
The PS2 may have a ordinary name BUT it has the greatest game library of any console ever, and probably always will considering how hollowed-out and soul-less the gaming industry has become. The PS2 has an astounding amount of diverse and unique titles, and even some of the multi-plats actually look better on the PS2 than the XBOX, not many but some. In short, the PS2 was about games not hardware domination.
ps2 didn't really have any great fps games though, that's what Xbox caught on with, and that's the direction that 360 went in to win last gen. oh wait Wii won last gen didn't it? but yeah ps2 probably has the best game library of any system ever, shadow of the Collossus, gta, final fantasy. the ps2 did rpg games well and perfected what I call "the movie style game." the best ps2 games were 3rd person rpgs with cuts scenes that made you feel like you were playing through a movie, either rendered in real time, or pre recorded on the dvd, or a mix of both.
Kelly Kapowski Well I can see you are a dude bro gamer. Sadly, those group of gamers are known as a poison to gaming. That's why the PS2 outsold the OG Empty Box, despite it looking better.
halo3odst Dreamcast Had some great games like Shenmue. But keyword here, SOME. PS2 Had many great games that at that time, no other series could beat in story, graphics and sometimes gameplay. Metal Gear Solid 2 Sons Of Liberty, Metal Gear Solid 3 Snake Eater, Kingdom Hearts 1, Kingdom Hearts 2, Soul Calibur 3, Final Fantasy X and many other classics that MOST people remembered and enjoyed for years and years and even now. Meanwhile, lets look at the other consoles. The Dreamcast has some memorable games, again, Shenmue, Shenmue 2 Sonic Adventure 1, Sonic Adventure 2 and Virua Fighter. Those games are good and even great, but honestly, do people remember those games more than the PS2 games I mentioned? The games I named out lived for a very long time. Meanwhile, Shenmue is just getting its third game, and at the time it gets it, Metal Gear Solid would have been at its 5th game by game (Though that one kinda sucks). Alright! Onto GameCube. I actually have no beef with the GameCube. It has great games itself. I loved playing Zelda end of end. Thing is though, Nintendo has a third party issue and has it to this day. They still couldn't get classics like Metal Gear Solid 3 Snake Eater or even Kingdom Hearts. The only Nintendo platforms Kingdom Hearts ever came on was handhelds. Again, GameCube? Great exclusives, but shit third party support. Now (Sigh) we talk about the OG Xbox. Oh God! The dude bro console. First off, let me say this, the OG Xbox had a lot of great ideas. Xbox Live Was a great service and it paved the way for service based online services, it had more content in multiplats and yeah, the graphics on its console was the BEST out of all consoles. Sadly, those were the only good things the OG Xbox did well. Lets break down why I think it's the WORST out of the 6th generation. Games are the biggest reason. Really now? Who the fuck talked about Halo like that? Yeah I'm sure it was pretty popular, but not compared to anything on PS2. All it did was start an online multiplayer dude bro crowd. (Claps hands) congrats Failsoft! You guys basically started the cancer tread of gaming from 2004 and onward. No one talks about the fucking horrible story of Halo and the horrible main character of Master Chief. He is no Solid Snake or Sora. He has no depth to him. He is just a wanna bad ass space marine with a horrible voice. Give me a break. They had no other big memorable title on the OG Xbox either. In conclusion, the PS2 wasn't a perfect console, but the console or its power is irrelevant. It had great games on It that was remembered for a reason. That alone is why people love the PS2, myself included.
At launch PS2 didn't have much true, but that changed and very quickly. It wasn't just the DVD player that made it sell so much unlike what some people say. Was a factor sure but not the sole reason.
I wonder if GTA had been Sega exclusive, whether they could have hung on and built on that - regained that edge they had through the uncensored Mortal Combat days.
(I know this comment is old but still) Even with the fantastic GTA III, Sega could not make a comeback, one of the main reasons PS2 did so well at launch was not only the brand itself (With the PS1 being the third best selling console of all time) but the fact that it could play DVDs out of the box in the early 2000s, keep in mind, it's like getting a budget DVD player with an extra system attached to play games. It appealed to casuals even before the Wii hit.
The 6th. Generation was pretty tight, {Dreamcast, PS2, Xbox & Gamecube} they all had their moments, some pretty good games to got along with the hoopla. I loved the Dreamcast, i was on the lines when it first debuted. So many games, and decent ones at that, Soul Caliber blew my mind, what art!!! Substance and replay value were all there. Ah, Namco what a developer!!! my heart was with the DC, but there wasn't anything as special as Sony's PS2, the greatest console of all times, can't be touched or duplicated, no one will ever see another PS2, what a freaking Library!!!!!!!!! I did have a hard time picking between the SNES and the PS2, but the latter brought a format {DVD} to the masses, and that can not be over looked, history has proven, the PS2 really brought the concept media to the forefront. We will never and ever experience another era as such, the term "Eye Candy" was practically placed in our thoughts and minds, thanks to the Sony Playstation 2. It didn't matter what anybody else had at the time, the PS2 was total poetry in motion, i loved the other consoles as well, but the PS2, was a one of a kind media monster. You're presentations with regards to the 6th. generation, were somewhat interesting. Not my favorite by any means, but informative never the less!!! Keep up the good work: Martin
Well Adam the ps2 is my fav console of all time and why? because of it games. The rpg and horror style games, for me, is the best out there, examples: Persona series (shinmegami tensei), shadow hearts series, dark cloud 1 and 2, tales of abyss and legendia, kingdom hearts, final fantasy X, ar tonelico, etc, for the horror, fatal frame seires, silent hl, indigo prohechy, and many mores. However I game you the credit that was the worst looking on graphics but I really dont bother if looks bad because I want an experience playing it ;)
yes I know and you told us that, thats was I gave you the point that in fact ps2 is the worst console on that generation comparing on graphics etc, but the games was the only thing that for me make it the best console because have everything to choose, and well have a lot of rpg and horror games that is my fav type of game. Also I think the ps2 is the console with most official game releases I think again, have over 2000, again I think
Yep, the age would definitely be a factor. Though to avoid being hypothetical, that's also why the NES for example doesn't mean much to me as it was mostly before my time.
I never liked the PS2 all that much. Not the software itself as it does have a great library of games, it's the hardware that has always bugged me. I remember a few years ago that it stopped running games and movies and it kept saying "Disc Read Error." I had to pay £40 to get it all cleaned and fixed and ever since then, I've rarely played it. When you said the Sega Dreamcast was the last genuine gaming console, I partially agree with that statement. I personally think the GameCube was the last one but the PS2 felt like the beginning of game consoles being very gimmicky with media features and losing a lot of what made games feel different from other forms of media.
I love the PS2, but I think it was the least "smooth" feeling console that gen. To me, the Dreamcast and the GameCube were the best playing consoles that gen.
When you said that PS2 didn't have a great launch. That's very true. The only launch game I played was my favorite Tekken Tag Tournament 1. That game was beautiful when it 1st came out. That's the only game I was playing until next year with GTA 3, NBA Street, Jak and Daxter Precursor Legacy, THPS 3, & etc. PS2 truly one of the best consoles of all time. R.I.P. (2000-2013)
I remember when the PS2 came out all my older brother and his friends would say is how it can play DVDs. Meanwhile I was sad cause he sold his Dreamcast and the games with it to get a PS2. But TBH the PS2 was an awesome console down the line. If was backwards compatible with PS1 games so you can enjoy classics while you wait for new games to come out, which PS2 has some of the best games in the entire PlayStation franchise. When it came downright to features, the PS2 dominated. It was the first game console that blurred the line between a game console and a media center. Xbox also did this too with it's own DVD playback with it's annoying ass remote limitation but people eventually modded them into media centers lol. Although I can understand why you disliked it, I did too because it basically curb stomped the Dreamcast. But you can't deny it's massive influence in the game industry as a whole. Now consoles can stream media and movies and it's all because Sony decided to add DVD playback in 2000. But on the real they probably would've streamed media anyways but the PS2 earned the title because it has DVD playback first. All that being said, yes the PS2s display quality is ASS LOL.
I remember the PS2 launch, I picked up a bunch of DVDs, and played a shit-ton of PS1 games to see how they cleaned up. I actually don't remember which PS2 games I purchased though, maybe SSX, if that was a launch title lol. What I’ll always remember about the PS2 was the excess. Whenever Xbox, GameCube, or even the Dreamcast got a game, the PS2 would get 14 (naturally 2001 and onward). Sure the vast majority would be filler, but I remember just how insane it was when you started looking at release schedules. When games like Disgaea hit the PS2, it had to find a niche market whereas if that were released on any of the other platforms it would have been celebrated as a major coup. That’s the thing with the PS2, tons, and tons of games flooding the market to the point it almost made the other systems feel more special because all the big games on the other systems were celebrated to some extent. Not sure if I’m getting my point across, but that’s the thing I’ll always remember most of the PS2, the excess.
I miss 3D platformer they still make them but most are mediocre and I can't think of an 8th generation 3D platformer off the top of my head apart from knack which sucked, and yooka-Laylee but I'd have to try a demo
Imagine an alternate universe where the PS2 didn't have DVD support and failed so the DreamCast would have become the best selling console of all time. Unlikely, but not impossible!
How do you "modify" your ps2? I don't get it. I have a cousin who plays burnt games on it and he has the best games ever and I wish I had those games too but what is it that I need to be able to play burnt games on my ps2?
@@AdrianL2805 nah ps1 was very successful so ps2 would still be more plus most of you don’t realize it wasn’t just old people buying it for dvds if your a kid you can make the excuse of buying ps2 to your parents so then they could enjoy dvd on it and then you as a kid could play games so ps2 was also a chance for kids to make the excuse to get a gaming console because of the dvd plus ps2 has 453 exclusives Xbox only had 95 plus 25 percent of them are probably on pc so there fake exclusives whenever I say onimusha 3 is ps2 exclusives people bring up the pc port wich ya onimusha 2 and 4 are the only real ps2 exclusives in onimusha series but the thing is how can Xbox players say elder scrolls morriwind is og Xbox exclusives when that’s on pc but apparently I’m not allowed to say onimusha 3 is ps2 exclusives wich is dumb to me. would PlayStation 2 go to the 100s if it didn’t have dvd no but I still think it would win but maybe not you know why because Xbox had a DVD player it was guilty of lt I remember this guy I know who owned a Xbox just for dvd you think I’m joking so Xbox also was guilty of it but PlayStation 2 was a better DVD player you didn’t need to use a remote even tho there was ps2 remote and the ps2 is smaller too so I can see some dvd guy getting ps2 for dvd over Xbox for dvd plus there are many times PlayStation 2 looked better true crime New York City looked way better on ps2 and had better fps then GameCube and Xbox did look a little better but the Xbox had a game breaking glitch that doesn’t let you finish the game there’s tons of other time PlayStation 2 beat GameCube that no one talks about but as for ps2 and Xbox Xbox multiplatform usually a little better or there even like burnout 3 takedown looks near identical to Xbox version plus ps2 was first console to have more than 4 players ya not much people know that smh it’s as if PlayStation 2 is overtalked about but underrated in the same time PlayStation 2 online was underrated games like monster hunter and resident evil outbreak online we’re revolutionary socom too I guess but socom a little bland to me I should try it it’s like tactical shooter and had online and was exclusives never even played ps2 online I wish I did
+AdamKoralik you forgot to mentioned the ps2 until 2012 was able to run NETFLIX. I think if the Ps2 had better image clarity you would love it. Also, have you ever tried to connect your "PS2 To HDMI" to your "Scart to HDMI" converter using the HDMI as input? I was wondering how it would look like
+Chuyi Vue the ps2 image clarity is not an issue, it has a video filter that makes jagged edges extremrly less noticible when using component cable. i played some ps2 on ps3 and the image looks inferior imo because that sprcial ps2 filter is gone and i can notice jagged edges even more.
I got a PS2 after the Dreamcast died, just to play games published by Sega, like OutRun 2,Crazy Taxi 2,Yakuza series and Astro Boy just to mention a few of them. Nice vid and keep on giving us knowledge and memories to all us who have the heart of a gamer.
I just don't understand fan boys because all you said was that the ps2 isn't your favourite console of the 6th generation and that you don't like the controller but because you've said that the fan boys now think you hate the whole playstation and prefer the xbox when you chose the ps4 over the xbox one for the eighth generation. Fan boys are odd people.
I remember seeing this un boxed on launch day at my friends house. It was really impressive how professional it looked. And in my head I was thinking, wow, consoles arent a childs toy anymore. This is a legit home appliance.
To be fair Adam the numbering of consoles thing didn't start with the PS2. It actually goes back to the Magnavox Odyssey 2, a competitor of the Atari 2600 when it was still the Atari VCS (video computer system).
I agree with your opinion Adam on the Ps2 controller it is pretty uncomfortable and one worst controllers ever and you are right about the Ps2 being Marketed as DVD player that was the main reason why it was so successful.
Ah the PS2, many many memories with this system, another great video in your recap series, really really enjoyed this one for some reason. I suppose its because of your brutal honesty and how you really break it all down, its easy for most of us to approach the system with rose-tinted goggles and see it as nothing but the best but I feel its important to have that honesty and to really have the facts put in front of us. Great video
Hey Adam, what do you think its better: PS2 connected to a lcd through component or Ps2 connected to a crt tv through scart? I usually use component but like you said it doesnt look very good! at least in most games, some are ok.
I own a PS2 because I like many of its exclusive games, not because I like the hardware. In fact, whenever I hear the words "only on PS2" I can't help but be disappointed, because I think how much better those same games could have potentially been on the original Xbox in terms of visuals, content, and controls. A perfect example of that for me is Fatal Frame. Fatal Frame 1 and 2 are _way_ better on Xbox, and then Tecmo went and made Fatal Frame 3 only for PS2. I bought it and I love it, but man, if only that game was on Xbox. Another example of a game is Persona 4. Man did I play the crap out of it, but imagine if that had been on Xbox as well!
MrMikehunt87 I'm not talking about the Duke, but rather the controller S originally designed for the Japanese market. I think that's one of the best controllers ever made, and I prefer it over the Xbox 360 and Xbox One controllers.
all 3 consoles had completly different hardware, the ps2 had an emotion engine chip that had only 300 mhz and still could hold on to its competitor. Becuase it had a supirior graphicscard and its ram had hugher clockrate and was the fastest and had even more ram than the gamecube. The emotion chip could also kind of phsicis stuff etc. Yeah the gamecube got resi and xbox got doom but the ps2 got shadow of colosus and silent hill 3. Games like silent hill 3 and mgs 3 are exclusive for a reason because of its different architecture it wouldnt run on gamecube or the xbox
Aktuell Russland Yes, they all have different architecture, but that doesn't mean jack when it came to the possibility of enhanced, better ports on either GameCube or Xbox. There are many examples of games that were initially exclusive to one format and then ported to one or both of the other two, and speaking only of the Xbox, there are many examples of games that started off a PS2 exclusives and then were later ported to the Xbox with better graphics, better framerate and additional content. Metal Gear Solid 2, Fatal Frame, Tenchu Wrath of Heaven, Dead or Alive 2, Grand Theft Auto 3. The list goes on and on. An even bigger list than that are games that were developed for all three, or at least, PS2 and one of the other two at the same time. In almost every single case from any developer, the PS2 version was inferior by a good margin when compared to the version the developer was able to make on GameCube or Xbox. This is why I say I am disappointing whenever I learn that a great PS2 game is landlocked on the PS2 hardware and never had a chance to be superior on more powerful hardware. This is is why it's almost always a better idea to buy those HD collection versions of PS2 games on PS3 rather than play the original PS2 builds. The PS2 may have this legacy of having such an amazing and diverse game library, but to me and many others, games that were locked to the PS2 were doomed to suffer from the hardware itself, never having a chance to reach their true potential on either GameCube or Xbox.
if you noticed I said PlayStation not ps2 and sorry if you don't racing but its worth the mention it was a launch game on PS ,PS2, PS3,and PS4 just as the forza series has been launched for Xbox, Xbox 360, and Xbox one just saying its worth mentioning
Hey adam how you doing? I found your channel looking info about some consoles and i really like it! I been learning really good stuff over here and i have one question for you. The video i can get from the ps2 is using the component cable? I will appreciate any help thanks!
Sam Pirela I haven't used it. But I know what you're talking about. All that thing does is pass the signal straight through. It's really a purchase of convenience. It either looks the same as component or worse.
It's funny you don't like the dualshock 1~3 controllers and mention that they're just an evolution of the SNES controller. That's _why_ I've always found them comfortable while a lot of other controllers seem like big clunky bricks to me. I loved the SNES controller, the only issue I had/have with is the build quality. Somehow Nintendo made the NES controller so rugged you could crack walnuts with it and go back to playing Zelda, while the SNES one develops minor to moderate cracks if you sneeze on it. Sony kinda did the same thing to a lesser extent too. The first dual analog controller for PS1 (the old gray ones that don't say dualshock anywhere on them) are beasts, they're built to take a nuclear blast. Then you have the dualshock 2 ones that were much more fragile, and the first model PS3 sixaxis controllers were pretty flimsy (plastic bits around the shoulder buttons love to jump ship). Thankfully they brought some build quality back with the dualshock 3 and 4. You do make a good point about hooking up a PS2 to an HDTV. When I got my PS3 and HDTV I set my CRT aside because I figured I'd just use the new TV for everything. So glad I didn't get rid of it because when it comes to PS1 and PS2 games they look better on the CRT (to me at least). It is really weird because you'd think that Sony as a TV manufacturer would be more forward thinking when it comes to display, heck esp if they were treating the PS2 as a media box (I NEVER saw it as a media box, it's always been a game console to me).
a CRT TV for a PS2 for any retro console looks amazing better than an HDTV. a PS2 is meant to be played on a CRT TV I've played a PS2 on a HDTV and it looks horrible. if you did component on an HDTV and then used composite on a CRT TV the game looks gorgeous on the CRT. granted my CRT TV only does composite so I really don't know the difference between component when it comes to CRT TV but it still looks better than HDTV. and that's not the only reason to buy a CRT TV for your retro console there's a thing called input lag and with a CRT TV there's no input lag at all that makes all the difference in the world. so go out there and buy yourself a CRT and enjoy the PS2 and all of its Glory.
uppermostking02 It was designed for newer TV, but the clarity sucks so it looks better on CRT. I don't have anything againts CRTs or PS2 (actually like CRTs because of high refresh rates and I had a PS2 [didn't liked it so well because of the controller]).
It is sad and cringe at the same time that you have to start some of these vids with a 'just because I don't like XYZ does not mean...' Kinda shows the ppl you are dealing with and their own mental limitations...
Ya, he's gotta buffer his vids for stating his opinion so PS2 fanboys (like me) don't spam the comments section. Gamers, it's fair to say, are among the shittiest people when it comes to "criticism about things you may like". See gamergate.
I remember PS2 was mocked for 2 controller ports and needing a multi tap. Sly Cooper and Ratchet/Clank was the the system seller for me. One day I’ll get the transparent blue PS2 to play Japan imports
I honestly can't fathom how you would prefer the gamecube over the PS2. To each their own I guess. The PS2 actually has the PS1 hardware natively built in, so you get two systems for the price of one. The fact that it runs on DVD means that it can handle more cinematics and more complicated games. hmmm Devil may cry, God of War, Red Faction, Final Fantasy X, GTA vice City? or should I play some mario? I wouldnt play any of the fifth gen consols on an HDTV. WTF would you do that? That's what the xbox 360 is for. Im not interested in playing wind walker in any resolution. 😅
I prefer the gc over the ps2 because I like their exclusives. As to your logic on cinematic and graphical capabilities, the Xbox is better handling these things. Meaning all around better gameplay quality. Even the gc does better hardware wise. And why would you play sixth(not fifth) gen games on hdtvs is to get great quality in the image quality and resolution. And playing on a crt gives you 480i which is a resolution
+who Knows esports Yeah the Cube's problem wasn't hardware it was Nintendo repeating their screw up with the N64 by using an inferior in terms of storage capacity media format compared to what their competitors used.
I really hated the button placement on the Xbox controller, even the S controller had the awkward black, white, start & select buttons. The analog sticks on the other hand were far better than the PS2 sticks imo, much more comfortable & precise.
136paul136 I completely agree. The original Duke was one of the worst controllers I have ever experienced. Even the European and Japanese S-version is horrible, with very strange button placements. It's also extremely bad for fighting games because some how with all the money Microsoft has they still don't know how to make a proper D-PAD. Good lucking trying to FADC in Street Fighter using Xbox D-PAD, lol.
Adam Koralik can you maybe help me understand the technical aspects of why a ps2 hooked up through component just won't display ps1 games? I've been trying to wrap my head around why but I'm too stupid to figure out what would cause that.
Essentially yes. You lose Action Replay support on the Wii, if that matters. There was one other disadvantage...but I can't think of it at the moment...sorry.
The PS2 had a lot of shovel ware games as I can remember. Only like a small percentage out of the thousands of PS2 games were really good. I own a PS2 BTW.
I am also not saying that other 6th gen consoles had shitty games, because believe me they did have a handful of terrible games. But it was the PS2 that suffered a large selection of shitty games, which makes sense since every developer profited off the PS2's popularity by releasing whatever game they could make quick cash with.
The ps2 is comparable to the NES IMO. People gloss over 1/3 of the PS2 library which had great exclusives but multiplats were better on the competition while the other 2/3rds of the library was shovelware . The NES suffers from the same issue. Blimey, How nostalgia blinds people. The SNES and mega drive are better consoles that will always be timeless unlike the PS2.
PS2 is my favorite console of all time, my original 2000 model still works and it has given me more games than any other console, my collection is still growing and I will continue to play it until it eventually dies on me.
mrsiggia People don't like it because they think it's too small for their hands. I personally have small hands so It doesn't bother me but I understand where they're coming from. I don't like Xbox or the controller layout but I will admit it is very comfortable to hold.
I've been playing games since the age of 20 now 55 I still play games I had every console you can think of I loved the ps2 it was a great console at the time I also had the very first xbox both had different things you could do the xbox would play your music in the background when you were playing games the ps2 didn't but I loved the ps2 just the same I recently got a ps2 slim has well as the ps3 love both great games all round!!!
Same thoughts on the PS2 as you, I'd rather play the games on Xbox or Gamecube. Only used the PS2 for metal gear, zone of the enters,, gran turismo etc. Looking forward to seeing the Xbox and Gamecube videos!
PS2 was great, gamecube with its tiny disks was always strange because Nintendo was too cheap to licence DVD's from that strange copyright consortium. Never got into Xbox
I remember getting my ps2 on chrismas 2002 and I got x games skateboarding with it....UGH!!! so I had to wait to get another game after chrismas and I got MGS2 and when I popped that disc in I was mind blown I was like omg this is so awesome and I played it nonstop.Idk adam what do you think of the re releases collection in HD on the ps3? idk if I mentioned this or not but do you think it was a good idea for them to do this?
I'm thrilled they did that. Some of the best games that were exclusive to the PS2 are now liberated and have better video quality on the PS3. It's a wonderful thing.
(14:22) @Adam Koralik My favourite series, being Metal Gear, is vastly better on PS2 than on the Original Xbox. Yes, the latter version is a port, but the era defining story of Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, looks and performs better on the PS2. In all, the series deserved a mention. Aside from this, what are your thoughts on the series? Great video nonetheless!
Say what you will, but the 6th Gen was an epic period of console gaming. Gen 6 was simultaniously both the last generation of retro gaming and the first generation of modern gaming. And there wasn't a bad console in the group. And while the PS2 is kind of generic, it had SO many games, especially if you're able to dip into the Japanese library. It doesn't matter what you're into, the PS2 had lots of games you liked. What made it good is what made it bad, and that's that it was, literally, everybody's console. I had a PS2 during the 6th Gen, but never really played it after, my nostalgia pulling me towards other consoles. But now, in 2021, I find myself playing the PS2 more and more since it had so many fun games. It was really the cornerstone of my gamer days. I really enjoy exploring its massive library these days.
Ezcuse me Adam my ps2 battery died. So now the clock resets everytime.i must unplug it. Is it ok to leave the dead battery inside? I dont mind having to set a time everytime i unplug
I disagree with many of your opinions on the console but even if you dislike it, you spoke about it respectfully and expressed your opinions in a very clear, mature manner. Props for that.
Thank you sir.
@Hendrou Bilo PS3 controller compared to ps4 controller hurts my hands
something like a historical fact that PS2 was presented more as a dvd player than an actual gaming machine which it was supposed to be, how tf it is an opinion??
Most of what he said about the PS2 were not opinions? This comment is so condescending.
He’s brutally honest he said in one of these comments PS2 didn’t murder the Dreamcast sega did he is right if sega would have made less mistakes with the Saturn the Dreamcast would have done better also marketing
Yep the PS2 didn't kill Dreamcast it but it definitely buried it.
Comrade Stalin!!!
Adam I hope it means something to you, when you're one of the few people that I can watch for 20 minutes without getting sidetracked.
I do appreciate that.
I’m the same, he has good charisma
Take your meds kid.LOL....
@@ModernClassicWorld How about you take yours?
+dominic trofa The PS2 didn't murder the Dreamcast, Sega did.
your so true adam awesome reviews on the consoles, i love your review on n64, xbox 360 and the wii u, im an xbox gamer myself but im saving my money up for next gen and the wii u does look cool
tom newbon
Thanks for watching!
I still love my PS2. i had mine since 2008.
I have had my Playstation 2 since 2005,the slimline model.
I always saw the reasons in the big success of the PS2
First: the cheap DVD Player
Second: The Playstation hype
Third: The backwards compatibility
Fourth: The much higher marketing budget compared to Sega.
2000/2001 (first half) was fascinating. Dreamcast gamers were definitely having more fun, until they were forced to move on.
Greg Lytle hey it was
The system had two huge selling points: backwards compatibility with Playstation One (PS1) games, and the ability to play DVD movies. Released at a time when standard DVD players cost several hundred dollars, obtaining one free with a game console seemed like a terrific value. The PS2 DVD player turned out to be mediocre in quality (I recall some sound synchronization issues) but for the most part it served its purpose.
wish this topics were discussed in actual classrooms in schools :D the class no one would get bored in! lol
Appreciated, but there are 12 people who definitely wouldn't agree with you sir.
AdamKoralik real world teachers I suppose! haha
Trip Hawkins founder of EA Games and the 3DO company is a professor at my brothers university, UCSB.
Yea
@Cathrine Hubbs I use component, as that's superior to both S-Video AND composite.
I did turn it down, i had to. Results vary depending on the game.
F-Zero GX is stellar.
PS2 was my first DVD player, PS3 my first blueray player !
They all introduced something: PS1- CD, PS2- DVD, PS3- Blu-Ray, PS4- shitty game streaming.
KILLIE1869 The PS1 introduced CDs to game consoles in absolutely no way.
Ps2 was an amazing console, just cause it promoted DVD it doesn’t mean it was bad in any way
KILLIE1869 Ummm SEGA CD did that.
XAVIER1992 that's an add on,NOT a solo dedicated console itself.
the ps2 actually had a STRONG launch: Tekken Tag, Timesplitters, DOA 2 Hardcore, SSX, Midnight Club, Silent Scope, Summoner, Kessen, Dynasty Warriors 2, Unreal Tournament and Armored Core 2 were some good games, decent at least as far as launch titles go, even if you rule out any non exclusive games. I guess you could argue that the GameCube or Dreamcast had heavier hitters, however the PS2s launch library is nothing to scoff at, and IMO is easily the best launch a Playstation system ever had.
downphoenix also MGS 2
Nick that wasn't a launch game lol...
Wasn't Zone of the Enders a launch title?
Tekken Tag Tournament 1 was the only one worth playing at launch. That's all I remember playing til next year in 2001 when they finally got games. Hehe. Good times
If ps2 had Need For Speed underground at release..
My fav console that I still play to this day.
Sure, its wasn't perfect, but man, I love this machine.
I'm glad you enjoyed it sir.
+Michael Salvo Thanks for watching!
Some bloke here in Britain back in 2000/2001 legally changed his name to PlayStation 2 LOL
Nintendo always changes their name except for the Wii U and SNES. (Not counting portables). And guess what the Wii U was a fail because of its name. Nintendo changed the name for the Wii and DS and look those are Nintendo’s most successful consoles
That’s literally what he said in the video
@@MalarkeyMan the DS was successful because Nintendo dominated the portable gaming scene and everyone knew how good Nintendo was in handleds the wii was successful because of their marketing strategy by targeting casuals the Wii U failed because of their target audience and bad marketing casuals don’t care about upgrading to the next generation console and the bad marketing didn’t help people thought it was a tablet add on
1:08, it's hard to outdo the Nuon.
peter cacic I don't hate the PS2.
*****
It goes beyond that. Most fanboys are general to a group. "Nintendo 4 life" "XBox Supreme!" "Playstation Nation!' "Sega Forever!"
These guys are hyper focused on an obsession with the PS2 that is obscene.
Coming from a guy so in love with one console (the Dreamcast) that I took the time to get a complete set for it, that says a lot.
*****
You get used to it.
The people I feel bad for are the ones who have legitimate reasons to love that console, but they get lumped in with the insane. Though that happens in many aspects of life, nothing new there.
Va de gustos pues?!!! Para mi ps2 es lo mejor y la sega dreamcast fue muy limitada . Pero es por gustos y es respetable. Saludos
My favorite game of all time was on ps2 the cult followed gauntlet 7 sorrows. Followed by twisted metal black
peter cacic XBox One is hands down the worst console name in videogame history. No debate there.
And yes, all the rest of those suck.
3DS...that one isn't too bad. Sells the line and the gimmick some what creatively. That being said, I got a 2DS...which is a terrible name.
xbone is fine. at the moment it has more good games than ps4 (though 2015 is gonna be awesome for ps4)
Sergey Abdulov That has nothing at all to do with the name.
XBone is also not its name, it's actually a derogatory term for it.
Ah you are talking about its name, sorry
Sergey Abdulov
All good.
Unique Games
PS2 - Excellent Library, PS3 - Great Library, PS4 - Amazing Potential Library
N64 - Excellent Library, NGameCube - Good Library, NWii - Okay Library, NWiiU - Good Library, NNext - ?
Xbox 360 - Good Library, Xbox One - Great Potential Library
The Rational Man The GameCube had an absolute excellent library along with the Wii U
The way you said "It has so many good games fuck you" made me laugh so hard 😂
Yeah sounded like Cartman
Holy shit GTA 3 on Dreamcast, the Dreamcast would of made a shit ton of money
You seem to have confused the ps2 library with that of the dreamcast's
Really enjoying these videos Adam. You've got a good knack for keeping topics such as these interesting and come across as sincere. Great work.
Thanks!
C'mon, TimeSliptters was a awesome launch title for the PS2!
Just saying.
Thats why the playstation brand became a household name for game consoles. Because they never changed the name. Playstation brand just evolved.
Adam Kor a l i k the TH-camr what is your favorite video game console and video game generation
this is still my favorite video of yours. partial reason being the way you addressed the sony fanboys!
Monster Jam the Video game, Monster Jam Urban Assault, and Jeep Thrills were also both Wii and PS2 multiplats.
However I game you the credit that was the worst looking on graphics but I really dont bother if looks bad because I want an experience playing it ;)
I....didn't knock the games dude.
yes I know and you told us that, thats was I gave you the point that in fact ps2 is the worst console on that generation comparing on graphics etc, but the games was the only thing that for me make it the best console because have everything to choose, and well have a lot of rpg and horror games that is my fav type of game. Also I think the ps2 is the console with most official game releases I think again, have over 2000, again I think
lol
My ps3 plays the ps2 library, making it the best game console of all time by your logic.
halo3odst Well PS3 was better than Xbox 360. The failure gap of the Xbox 360 and PS3 shows that. (Cough) RROD (Cough).
PS2 is personally my favorite system of all time but I fully respect your opinion that you’re not big on it.
I was a 6th gen kid being born in 1995.
I personally think the GameCube was the last one but the PS2 felt like the beginning of game consoles being very gimmicky with media features and losing a lot of what made games feel different from other forms of media.
hey i know this dosnt have any thing to do with the video, but what would you recommend for getting the best quality out of a NES 2?
thanks.
Snake is right.
I love the PS2, but I think it was the least "smooth" feeling console that gen. To me, the Dreamcast and the GameCube were the best playing consoles that gen.
I don't mind the PS2 not up scaling well. (I just use my CRT for my PS2 games and older since that's what they were made for)
When you said that PS2 didn't have a great launch. R.I.P. (2000-2013)
At least the PS2 had a better launch than the Dreamcast in Japan.
That's a good point, I never really thought about that.
I feel like the ps1 also had this issue. Always having to look through shovel wear just to find something decent.
Yeah PS1 was the same in many ways.
Do you also have the Ratchet and clank series?
I think the Ratchet and clank games was a reason to buy a ps2.
I do have them, yes.
One big thing that bugs me...ONLY 2 CONTROLLER PORTS.
PS2 collection video at any point? I want to see all of your PAL games.
Every Ps2 fan I encounter will for some reason never admit it was successful because of the DVD support
The ps2 would still be very successful even if it didn’t have dvd
@@AdrianL2805 nah ps1 was very successful so ps2 would still be more plus most of you don’t realize it wasn’t just old people buying it for dvds if your a kid you can make the excuse of buying ps2 to your parents so then they could enjoy dvd on it and then you as a kid could play games so ps2 was also a chance for kids to make the excuse to get a gaming console because of the dvd plus ps2 has 453 exclusives Xbox only had 95 plus 25 percent of them are probably on pc so there fake exclusives whenever I say onimusha 3 is ps2 exclusives people bring up the pc port wich ya onimusha 2 and 4 are the only real ps2 exclusives in onimusha series but the thing is how can Xbox players say elder scrolls morriwind is og Xbox exclusives when that’s on pc but apparently I’m not allowed to say onimusha 3 is ps2 exclusives wich is dumb to me. would PlayStation 2 go to the 100s if it didn’t have dvd no but I still think it would win but maybe not you know why because Xbox had a DVD player it was guilty of lt I remember this guy I know who owned a Xbox just for dvd you think I’m joking so Xbox also was guilty of it but PlayStation 2 was a better DVD player you didn’t need to use a remote even tho there was ps2 remote and the ps2 is smaller too so I can see some dvd guy getting ps2 for dvd over Xbox for dvd plus there are many times PlayStation 2 looked better true crime New York City looked way better on ps2 and had better fps then GameCube and Xbox did look a little better but the Xbox had a game breaking glitch that doesn’t let you finish the game there’s tons of other time PlayStation 2 beat GameCube that no one talks about but as for ps2 and Xbox Xbox multiplatform usually a little better or there even like burnout 3 takedown looks near identical to Xbox version plus ps2 was first console to have more than 4 players ya not much people know that smh it’s as if PlayStation 2 is overtalked about but underrated in the same time PlayStation 2 online was underrated games like monster hunter and resident evil outbreak online we’re revolutionary socom too I guess but socom a little bland to me I should try it it’s like tactical shooter and had online and was exclusives never even played ps2 online I wish I did
Is playing Gamecube games with a Wii using component cables just as good as playing them with a gamecube with component?
Great honest review.
+This no gay, this Wesley Thanks for watching.
AdamKoralik oh, it is my pleasure! Keep up the good work!
Yeah, tell me about it.
They should just respect your opinion.
LittlestObow
Would be nice, but it's whatever.
True
I remember seeing this un boxed on launch day at my friends house. It was really impressive how professional it looked. And in my head I was thinking, wow, consoles arent a childs toy anymore. This is a legit home appliance.
To be fair Adam the numbering of consoles thing didn't start with the PS2. It actually goes back to the Magnavox Odyssey 2, a competitor of the Atari 2600 when it was still the Atari VCS (video computer system).
I've tried the best cables for all sixth gen consoles on modern TV's & the best is still RGB through a CRT tv.
My favorite games are the “Legacy of Kain” Series.
I'm thinking about getting Twisted Metal Black soon because I found it at Walmart for $5 sealed. I'm happy they still sell ps2 games.
Great video
+Sheldon Murphy Thanks!
they have the hdmi converter for the ps2 that cleans it up pretty good
I would dispute that: th-cam.com/video/H0J3ERZ3nTk/w-d-xo.html
.....Grand Theft Auto for the Dreamcast was in the works and they axed it?? Hearing that made my cry, puke and gag all at once. :"(
they did make a gta game for dreamcast
BeastMaster69 what is it called please let me know
One Boy Many Memes Official it’s GTA 2
Hey Adam, what do you think its better:
PS2 connected to a lcd through component or Ps2 connected to a crt tv through scart?
I usually use component but like you said it doesnt look very good! at least in most games, some are ok.
Component digital, definitely. Though the PS2 video quality sucks either way.
AdamKoralik Thanks for answering!
@Satoshi Matrix I agree completely.
MrMikehunt87
I'm not talking about the Duke, but rather the controller S originally designed for the Japanese market.
Aktuell Russland
Yes, they all have different architecture, but that doesn't mean jack when it came to the possibility of enhanced, better ports on either GameCube or Xbox.
Adam, have you ever used a VGA adapter for the PS2?
Is it better than the component cable?
I was unaware they made one, though I'd be astonished if it was.
14:54 I thought the Game Boy was the first console to have the webcam with the Game Boy Camera.
Also Great Videos as always
I wasn't really including handhelds.
AdamKoralik My bad lol Still awesome Video I didn't know there was an Altered Beast on the PS2, I was like "Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaat???" lol
if you noticed I said PlayStation not ps2 and sorry
if you don't racing but its worth the mention it was a launch game on PS ,PS2, PS3,and PS4 just as the forza series has been launched for Xbox, Xbox 360, and Xbox one just saying its worth mentioning
+Lynchology101 I love you.
What are some "must have" games for the ps2? im looking to pick up a few.
PlayStation controller bad? Woah ,talk about unpopular opinions o.o
i hate playstation controller, and was my first console.
The ps1/2/3 controller was always uncomfortable due to the analog sticks and the short handles
Bit late (3 years lol) but do you not have a copy of shenmue 2 for dreamcast? Is your dreamcast region free or can it even play pal games?
Fun Fact: If the PS2 where a country, It would be the 9th most populated country. Ahead of Russia and just behind of Bangladesh.
Hey adam how you doing? I found your channel looking info about some consoles and i really like it! I been learning really good stuff over here and i have one question for you. The video i can get from the ps2 is using the component cable? I will appreciate any help thanks!
I assume you mean the best video quality, if so, yes. Component is your best option.
I'm going to get one right away! Also there is a HDMI adapter on ebay, do you think that adapter will make any different?
Sam Pirela
I haven't used it.
Matthew Graey Use a component cable on your hdtv with the ps2 and it will look way better
Hey Adam i was wondering if you had any plans after the fifth generation retrospective to do one on the 4th generation or before?
I might do it, but it won't be for a while.
Well if you do i look forward to alot of new information on consoles nobody might know even exist.
a CRT TV for a PS2 for any retro console looks amazing better than an HDTV. a PS2 is meant to be played on a CRT TV I've played a PS2 on a HDTV and it looks horrible. if you did component on an HDTV and then used composite on a CRT TV the game looks gorgeous on the CRT. granted my CRT TV only does composite so I really don't know the difference between component when it comes to CRT TV but it still looks better than HDTV. and that's not the only reason to buy a CRT TV for your retro console there's a thing called input lag and with a CRT TV there's no input lag at all that makes all the difference in the world. so go out there and buy yourself a CRT and enjoy the PS2 and all of its Glory.
uppermostking02 It was designed for newer TV, but the clarity sucks so it looks better on CRT. I don't have anything againts CRTs or PS2 (actually like CRTs because of high refresh rates and I had a PS2 [didn't liked it so well because of the controller]).
he preorder the ps2, so he played on old school crt...
If I were to use some sort of composite to hdmi converter on a ps2 would it still display ps1 games?
+Nicholas DeForte Probably, but that's highly not recommended.
Adam Koralik well alright then thanks for telling me before I did something stupid. I appreciate you answering my questions.
Adam Koralik well alright then thanks for telling me before I did something stupid. I appreciate you answering my questions.
I just imported a ps2 from Japan and the memory card I've been using for my US ps2 isn't recognized by it. What do I do about this?
Ironically I like the PS controller. I think it is far better than the Original Xbox controller.
To be fair, I think the PS2 controller is better than the Duke XBox controller....but I do like the XBox Controller S better than the PS2 controller.
Is it possible to hook up a ps2 through component and just set it to RGB in the settings so that it'll still display ps1 games?
+Nicholas DeForte Sadly no.
Adam Koralik can you maybe help me understand the technical aspects of why a ps2 hooked up through component just won't display ps1 games? I've been trying to wrap my head around why but I'm too stupid to figure out what would cause that.
PS1 games simply don't support it.
There was actually a good launch game. Timesplitters :)
Hey I'm Milki ツ and Tekken Tag Tournament 1. How can you forget that?
Gamecube game running on a Wii with component video looks the same as a real Gamecube with component, right?
In the US, I believe so. However, in PAL land, Cube Games did not prompt for progressive so Cube scart was the best we got.
3,870 games total worldwide.
***** Also 750 PAL exclusives, most of which are crap.
I am also not saying that other 6th gen consoles had shitty games, because believe me they did have a handful of terrible games. But it was the PS2 that suffered a large selection of shitty games, which makes sense since every developer profited off the PS2's popularity by releasing whatever game they could make quick cash with.
+almighty_luigi No, the Dreamcast had more shovelware games than the ps2
The ps2 is comparable to the NES IMO. People gloss over 1/3 of the PS2 library which had great exclusives but multiplats were
better on the competition while the other 2/3rds of the library was shovelware . The NES suffers from the same issue. Blimey, How nostalgia blinds people. The SNES and mega drive are better consoles that will always be timeless unlike the PS2.
PS2 is my favorite console of all time, my original 2000 model still works and it has given me more games than any other console, my collection is still growing and I will continue to play it until it eventually dies on me.
i love the playstation controller!
mrsiggia People don't like it because they think it's too small for their hands. I personally have small hands so It doesn't bother me but I understand where they're coming from. I don't like Xbox or the controller layout but I will admit it is very comfortable to hold.
mrsiggia So do I, Sony didnt change it much because people liked the design.
mrx same here
GrayWoIf I loved the GameCube controller. That was very comfortable to hold.
Thanks for watching.
I purchased a grand total of 8 PS2's in my life
I must've too. I would run them so much they'd just burn out lol
That is one thing i hated about ps2's. Their lasers liked to burn out.
pichum4st3r all the fat models that I have are broken. Only one i have that works is the slim model
Love the original/Twin Snakes remake, never really enjoyed it much after that. I beat 2, but didn't love it. Kind of never bothered with the rest.
PS2 is definitly my least favorite 6th generation console. still a decent console in my opinion. shity graphics for alot of games
steve p AND SHITTTTY ANOLOG STICKS
*Analog
You are incredibility moronic.
steve p You must be moronic!
Idiot. -_-
Say what you will, but the 6th Gen was an epic period of console gaming.
Nuon Master Race.
greatest console of all time
Yeah, no, best selling yes, i would agree, but even if you are going by game library, the original PS3s were much MUCH better.

Replace console with PlayStation because it does not come even close to the GameCube, DS, and Xbox 360
Ezcuse me Adam my ps2 battery died. So now the clock resets everytime.i must unplug it.
Is it ok to leave the dead battery inside?
I dont mind having to set a time everytime i unplug
Yeah it won't hurt anything, but replacing the CMOS battery should be pretty easy.
