Why we do not appreciate W220 and love W221 ? Some say looks matters but for me difference between two cars must be explained more specifically.

I care a lot about my w220, it is a great car and i had 3 of them. Super reliable cars

@adnan The Great Diesel engines are turbo not naturally aspirated, the 3 I have had have been 320 CDI L6 engine. 2 of them the pre-facelift version with 197hp and the one I have now, the facelift version with 204hp. No engine problems except normal wear parts. The suspension is reliable and very comfortable, I prefer the comfort of this suspension and if something happens, repair it. With these cars it is very important to keep maintenance up to date.
@adnan The Great Air suspension issues on Mercedes are exaggerated tbh, it's mostly the front ones that give. Mine lasted 330k km until the front-right failed, replaced them both with Arnott branded ones for around 700 usd each.

Nobody hates W220,excluding some W140 and W221 fans/youtubers.It´s a beautiful and great quality car which was much more a technical milestone than W221.It´s biggest sin seem to be that it doesn´t look as big as W140 and W221.
I do like W221,but to me it´s not cozy at all unlike W220.Also,bad thing is that you are stuck with the W221 boring brown/black-white coloured multimedia,whereas with W220 you can replace the Comand with Android unit.I also think W220 interior is very elegant,much better than W211. So,these are matters of taste and opinion.
One thing that is not an opinion but fact,is that there was nothing wrong with the earlier W220s except rust.Facelift-cars are technically the same as their were before,only little more decorated.
You can have android in W221 as well. It looks great and I wanted to try one, yet I do not know about the reliability of these Chinese units so Im stuck with the original and its all good.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE my W220 S55 AMG! As much as it has broken my wallet, I still always geek out about how great it is! It has the presence, it has the aggression, it has that low growl, and it's blacked out. I did want a W221, but the version I wanted wasn't available nor affordable yet. The W220 is criminally slept on, especially those facelifted versions. And like James May said, it's the incredible shrinking car. You put everything in sport mode and it feels like a C-class. I also feel very cocooned in the W220. It's such a great car

I own a w220, and it is the most comfortable vehicle I've ever owned. It is only the bodywork of this era of Mercedes that let's it down. Because it is so good mechanically, I've spent an obscene amount on restoring the rusty areas. Though not perfect, it is now ready for a new lease of life.. . . And I think this is the most stylish of the S Class models!

Actually, w220 have better materials in the interior than w221. You can find cheap plastics in w221. You can check the Daniel Kon's video about comparison of these cars.

Cheap plastics are found in W222, you're confusing the two. Both W220 and W221 have quality materials in their dash and interior in general. Same with the e-class, W210 and W211 are both nice, the W212 is where they went cheap.

W210 is awesome and W211 is actually better in the design but material of lower parts are not great. I'm a owner of 2007 E-Class.

W220 was a bit of a disappointment, but the C215 (Coupe version) was a much better car, the interior was significantly nicer inside and so were the materials, the body was also aluminium, magnesium and plastic so doesn't rust like W220. If W220 had C215 quality (C215 was 30% more expensive) then it would have been a much better S Class.

W220 has been the pinnacle in Benz design and risk in cutting edge tech, which of course comes at a cost in reliability that the W221 benefits.
Nothing like the graceful looks of the W220.
I love them both honestly. Although I was never big on the w221's rear wheel arches. Thing is though, what is the most reliable w221? I hear the 7 speed trans is not a good unit and some engines have issues. I have a w220, and it's meant to have the bullet proof m112 and 5 speed trans combo. What is the bulletproof combo for the w221? The early 5 speed with which engine?

I bought my first W221 S550 2 years ago and although it's had some issues it's never been anything too major and only a dead starter has left me stranded one time. The engine has never had issues, the transmission has never had issues, and I've only replaced a suspension compressor and a strut. Airmatic is actually really good believe it or not. 170k miles and I am still less into this car infinitely less than a new Corolla. The V8 although makes only 382 horsepower, mated with the 722.9 transmission makes this car fly. Smoking Maserati Ghiblis and Chargers all day. It makes more power than the pre-facelift S55 AMG W220. It may make less than the supercharged S55 but it's not getting absolutely dusted by it. And the trade off is no ABC suspension and a more modern car. If you're looking for the most affordable S Class this is definitely going to be it and it's still a great car.
I love my W221 but if I could find a 2005-2006 W220 with the AMG sport package especially in black or silver for the right price I would buy it ASAP

I like my w220 S350, of course it has rust but it has been reliable for a long time, and the thing i like about it the most is the fact that everything is easily accesible on it
06 w220 brilliant silver with amg pkg is the best mercedes, sexy inside and out !!! Fenders on w221 is ugly that's why they dropped it.

I love my black 2005 S 500 4Matic I’ve had it for almost 7 yrs now and is a pleasure to drive I am going to get a 2012 S550 4Matic next week. Both cars are great and I remember yeeeears ago the W220 was a sexy car especially the facelift and AMG

@@diyandimov5104 Don't think so mate, W220 was pinnacle. W221 design tried too hard with blocky, edgy, bulgy looks, and it made it age faster, still ugly imo. Tech? Well yes, it benefited from the W220's investment.
I don't actually drive my w220, my mum does. Which is cool as I love to watch the w220 driving away. Good looking, significant looking lump. Always liked the headlights as they remind me of the Maybach of the time.
what kind of w220 you have ?
I drove a 2000 S for a while and loved it but like my 2013 S5 50 formatic much better. I feel like the inside is nicer, and I like the look with the extended part over the wheels. Both cars drive great. I have not had a 2013 long enough to comment on reliability versus the 2000. The only issue I had with the 2000 was the air suspension. I drove the car for 3 1/2 years and had absolutely no issues with anything besides that. My 2013 I picked up this month with only 46,000 miles on it.
S550 4.7 twin turbo ? How much was air suspension repair ?
On the 2000 s class, 1800 to change to normal suspension. 3400 to replace all the air parts. I sold it instead of fixing it as I could buy a used one for just a little more

At least in the USA the main issue that people had with the W220 was rust. My boss bought one and in Kentucky (the south not rust belt!) it rusted out within 3 years. I thought that they were nice cars but you rarely see them around here that don’t have rust on the bottom of the doors and the wheel arches and trunk edges. You NEVER see that with the W221 or W222

in my opinion it is one of the most beautiful Benz S Class ever produced, it will be its streamlined and soft line, with almost no edges, its elegance in the form of simplicity do yes in my humble opinion. today they would not be able to combine Elegance and simplicity all in one again, both inside and outside, it is really one of the S-Class, really well done. I love that car, you can really define it as an undercover luxury. this is my opinion about it.

I love my black W221 S550. I debadged it, tinted windows, custom exhaust, and ECU tune, yellow fog lights, and german front plate. People ask if it's a new car and it's a 2007 with 104K miles.

Debadging is kool. It adds mystery. I run a few W211 CDI’s that from 05/06 that get lots of compliments and people also think they’re newer than they are. They also think you’re rich. Lol. Not after my wallet gets “raped”. This era of MB is the best
... There's nothing really wrong with a w220. The newer the merc the further it is from the values that a Mercedes benz was all about. The air suspension and most of the maintenance will kill your pocket. But this car is strong. It was well built

Mmmh I currently have a 03 W220 430. It’s fine. The airmatic suspension is a treat to ride on. It’s big but manageable. My mom always says S-Classes are too big for her (she has a c207)but she takes my car everywhere. The M113 engine mated to the 722 trans is a reliable setup. It may not be the best S class as far as presence or interior quality or rust protection🙈 but it’s not a bad car. Design wise I think the W220 has a more timeless design than the W221. I came from a R129 to this car and I almost cried (I wasn’t ready to sell) but once I drove it I’m like damn this is smooth😌. Oh and I dream about the AMG W220s. I want an S55 or 65

I love my 2003 W220 S320cdi (facelift with new diesel engine). 1.The 5 spd auto box was in 2 series of Porsche 911's, Jaguar Supercharged XKR, as well as S600 of same years, Maybach etc. Needs to be reset now and again to relearn driving style. 2. Max Torque - Hits the 500nm max torque mine has from 1700rpm - 2300 rpm. other examples - From idle1000rpm 280nm, 1200rpm 375nm, 1400rpm 444nm etc (think get picture). Have to take it to Comfort mode in rain so gearbox from idle is in 2nd when it pulls off, else in Sport which uses 1st gear on takeoff, you just see Orange Triangle. 3. So far I've done 240,000kms and apart from Std - 1 x water pump and air shocks twice. Doesn't use any oil etc etc 4. Economical!! - Fuel Usage - 8,9-10.4 ltrs / per 100kms for solid traffic driving (done 300kms over 9hrs at average under 30kph), and on freeway anything between 120kph uses 5 ltrs / 100kms, and 160 kph using 6,9!! 5, Most NB tons of new cheap parts. Standard 225/60 or 65/16 Tires take African potholes easily without any mag damage or sidewall ballooning, and they cost the same if not less than a new set of Corolla ones, lol. 6. Easy for a DIY mechanic to service (all filters at top take 10 mins to chg all), and loads of space to work (more commercial straight cylinder 6 design in mind than 320d's v6s of time went into M's & G's.!! 6. MOST NB w220.ee wiki webpage, apart from mbworld.org forums...7.Favorites - I love the car in White, Bose sound (with aux female input), Massaging and Dynamic Active Seats, Dual Zone AirCon, Keyless Go, Space etc etc She's 20 next year 😍💗 I let go of a mint Mr2 Spyder with hard top, 40,000kms etc and kept the Benz when had choose. Less on parts. Less on gas. This idiot can work on it. 8. Window open, she idles and sounds like a brand new slick city bus re engine and gears, with the dump sound of air tanks releasing now and again, She's THE BUS!! Floor her and she flies!! Sorry for essay.

I have the face lifted S430 W220 And I can agree with many of the things being said. I do enjoy the car however I find myself wishing it was AMG car with more power and a little more aggressive wheels and Body moldings Because it isn't fully committed to being all luxury either. So pick one.
I also absolutely hate how my light tan interior has aged very poorly and not withstood normal day-to-day wear and tear very well. All the high contact points have faded and worn in a very ugly manner.

I'm glad nobody cares about the W220 as much, the S55 AMG model can be scooped up for so cheap. They're reliable (for an AMG) and have tons of power. I would never buy a non-AMG model W220 though.

The 220 had no presence. Not exactly ugly but as you said, ZERO presence. Unfortunately they had the Jappanese design the 221 so it looks like a Nissan Maxima on steroids. W140 was the last real S-Class.

you are heavily misinformed about the w220. I own a 2005 s55 amg and it is an absolute amazing car all around. the interior has super materials compared to the w221. far less plastics but the w221 has a better design of course along with technology. since I own the amg variant it has abc and it rides much stiffer compared to airmatic. the steering feels responsive and not too numb and boring feeling like newer s classes. w220 is more reliable in every aspect minus abc/airmatic. I truly love this car and also you have to only look at the facelift w220 they are much better in every aspect compared to the prefacelift. the styling looks much more modern and more presentable. I still prefer the w221 and almost every other s class generation over the w220. the amg variants are a must to own they are true sporty feeling drivers sedans with minimum body roll with abc sport activated.
