If you look at the work of master painters, they absolutely painted the same subject over and over. Like monet and the water lilly pond, picaso painting the same woman over and over, frida kahlo and her many self portraits, etc. It really does help improve your art a lot.
Absolutely agree! At times I envision a way I want to paint a subject. And there are times I just don't like what I have just created. There are quite a few times I have repeated the same subject and we always find something new to learn even if it's the same subject...
It is good to envision what you want to create. It’s good to not be a slave to the subject and understand that the “failure” comes from motor skills and understanding of the medium, more than the product that our minds eye creates :)
Thank you so much for this golden advice. I'm a complete beginner and have fallen into the rabbit hole of painting everyday and painting just whatever grabs my attention..okay maybe also watching too much TH-cam on how to do watercolour painting.Yes I have a few practice paintings but I really can't see any progress because I have no basis to measure progress which I find very frustrating. So I'm happy to have found your channel and have subscribed. @@antoniocabrero i sent you message on instagram .. i saw that you won't be there til april , but just wanted to say hi .. my coffee cup pieces( and many others) are there 😁👍take care Norakag
I think it’s fun to paint the same thing again and again, because of the differences that happen.🤓🥳 I’ve become more familiar with the subject matter. I have learned how to do it a little bit better. It’s thinking through the problems that may have occurred the first time around. It’s fun try it
Its very true - even the old masters / impressionists ect always did that - paint the same subject multiple times, and when you think about it, its not really the " same" subject, as time changes things, simply the same location. Even using a photo as refrence, each painting will still be different and have its own character. Ive had situations in which my painting has got technically better with each rendering, but my eyes still go back to the first less perfect effort with its " mistakes " as it somehow has more character ( not always, but it sometimes happens )
Agreed… makes sense. This is a similar approach used by musicians who have to practice their pieces over and over just to get the intonations of expression just right.
Not just musicians, all great artists who we study in art history had to really struggle and practice to reach their full potential... Picasso, Van Gogh...all of them.. Hobby painting which many of us do today are okay as well, but that level of excellence can only come with disciplined practice...
I tend to bounce around but when i do multiple of the same subject I break it up. Like dragons come in many colors and shapes. Or malny different types of owls and forests. You're right about practice my Sensei used to say a well placed perfect move by a beginner could take down any master. Visual Art has many parallels.
oh shit i think u are right ....i have noticed this too...i have painted the view from my house many times and this is the only place i see improvement..my view changes moment by moment but u are right also that i felt it is like cheating if i keep painting the same subject ....as of today i am giving myself permission to do just that ..i am going to spend this year 2024 painting my view. THANK YOU !
I totally agree with u, painting, painting again, looking at your painting, compare and examine the difference, avoid some mistakes. Most importantly, enjoy your painting.
I like the title "93.4% of Artitst Don´t Practice this" because I was pretty sure that only 87.2% don't practice it. 😂Repeating what you do is a really compelling point for improving one's skills, unless the goal is just to enjoy the process. I agree with what you're suggesting and I would be curious to try.
While I haven't done this much myself, I have on the odd occasion. Mostly it's been trying the same image in a different medium eg watercolour then oils, or watercolour then pastel pencils. My problem is boredom. I don't read books a second time and am not interested in watching a movie more than once either. The thought of redoing the same picture is really off putting to me. It's groundhog day all over again, a movie I absolutely hated for the same reason.
I've been attending a life class, weekly, for over a year, which means i draw the human form over and over again. And I'm much better at it now than a year ago. So repetition is good.
In every artistic endeavor I've tried, I have found the people who struggled the most were the people who were either unwilling to branch outside their comfort level, or were unwilling to practice what they already knew. You need to do both if you want to grow.
I have been having a nagging feeling I should do this.. but went for something new ( and barely mediocre) I want to send cards out for holidays... will start practicing those
I noticed that you weren’t copying the source picture. I don’t know if you were intentionally changing the composition slightly or if you were left brain painting and painting what you think you saw in the colours you thought were there. It was still beautiful though.
Good observations! I am painting straight from the source. I wasn’t looking at that picture. That’s only for you the viewer to know what I was looking at. But the composition and angle I was looking it from is slightly different from the one in the picture:)
I am not going to paint something I don’t want to paint. Until it kills my desire to paint. Which is likely to come before some illusion of improvement like some illusion that my life will be long enough to “achieve” that illusion of improvement. I paint because it gives me pleasure! I am not going to paint something I don’t want to paint. Oh, you didn’t like my painting - I don’t care.
You are wrong. You are giving one of the worst advices for someone that wants to be creative. The best advice is to enjoy what you are doing. Your paintings lack an expressive touch as well.
@@antoniocabrero I understand but you need to clarify that this will improve your technical ability. There are different views on what great art is. Some people like strictly technical art and that is OK but someone might start thinking that technical art is the best form of art and might stray away from their original creative vision. Impressionist art and modern art basically strayed away from technical standards of how art was perceived in their respective periods.
@olllloollllo I absolutely agree and see your point. I can assure you that most of my videos I talk about the enjoyment of art, because that’s my main focus :)
Thant's true. Being creative and focusing on improving your art are coming from a different mindset. Being creative and not repeating the same picture doesn't mean that one will. not improve. Repeating the same picture for the sake of improvement will likely block the creative part.
That's just silly, art is not about mechanics it's about expression. Painting the same thing over and over doesn't help you become any better. The techniques of painting and drawing are the same for whatever you are painting. Painting a sky is just like painting water. You are just adjusting the application and you are learning with every action no matter what the subject matter is. What I will say is if you are trying to learn how to draw freehand you do need to just draw and draw. Like I said art is about expression and should be a joy to do not a burden. Sometimes a subject or style will make you work hard for it but that's part of the fun as well.
Sports are for fun as well, but practicing skills are important in order to become a better athlete. Imagine the difference between just showing up to play soccer and hoping to score, and practicing kicking the ball every day leading up to the game. I’ve drawn the same thing over and over until I get what I imagined in the beginning. Art is a process.
Art is what you make of it really. I am just sharing this for those who want to improve. I know this helped me, maybe it doesn’t work for you or that isn’t what you want :) I’m just the type of person that likes to see results and understand what I am doing by repetition
Art, is, a process, all I am saying is doing the same thing over and and over is a bit of a waste of time. You will learn just as much by trying various subjects and techniques and be expanding your knowledge even more because you will find new things to help you that you may not experience by repeating something over and over. I've been at this for 62 years so I do have some experience at it. But, to each his own.@@lorenknowles1521
Sure, I didn’t mean to imply to just paint one subject your whole life 😅 I meant it as in the beginning for someone who is new in art, it’s a good way to see improvements quickly. But as you said there is value in variation:)
