  • FULL DYNO RESULTS-4.8L GETS CAM, NOS AND BOOST. CHECK OUT THIS VIDEO WHERE I GRABBED A JUNKYARD 4.8L, THEN APPLIED A VARIETY OF MODIFICATIONS. WE STARTED WITH A CARBURETED INDUCTION SYSTEM, THEN ADDED A HEALTHY COMP CAM AND SPRINGS. I THEN ADDED A SIMPLE NOS SNIPER PLATE NITROUS SYSTEM WITH STREET JETTING. AFTER THE NITROUS, I ADDED A TORQSTORM SUPERCHARGER. THE TESTING WAS FINISHED OFF WITH E-85!

    Richard, you need to build a 24 Hours of Lemons car with one of your junkyard 4.8 boosted motors. I'm pretty sure you could get most of the 102K of us to sponsor the build. If everyone here sponsored one part of the build, you'd have it funded in no time and we'd be able to see one of your junkyard creations in action. If you do this, you need to name the patrons "Holdener's Heroes" or something suitably corny! :)

    I appreciate how you don’t hate on things. That’s nice. I am primarily a turbo sb efi guy. But I appreciate a nice carby setup or blower deal. But the idea of keeping an open mind and honing discernment. For example, if you want to learn about wiring, maybe check how they do it on airplanes and boats. Maybe you can learn something and apply it to your hot rod. Same type of thinking and open mind for carb and efi turbo blower nitrous etc. it’s how we get better. Trying to grab the best ideas or methods from each for our goals and doing them. Maybe some ideas don’t work like we thought and some work better than we could have imagined. But the common denominator is open mind and learning while honing the discernment. For example I am a crimper not a solder guy. But that doesn’t mean there isn’t a place for it. Anyways. God bless and keep up the great work.

    Single plane all the way on any ls engine. I ran a dual plane on a stock 5.3 & 4.8 with a comp thumper cam. Both ran like garbage with horrible dead spots. Took the dual plane off the 5.3 & put a single plane on & ran awesome way more responsive & power everywhere you want it. The 4.8 I actually cut the center divider out & added a 1" spacer & fixed it. Basically making similar to a single plane....just buy a single plane.

    Back in the day, a built, balanced and blueprinted 283 Chevy, tuned would not only scream on high revs but it could tow a heavy car.

    • @glennmanchester1568
      @glennmanchester1568 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Sure but at a higher rpm down low even with no upgrades the 283 was. Certainly not much in the way of low end torque but ran so smooth and I loved them I only actually had 2 one that was In a 67 impala with a powerslide and it ran beautifully and the other was out of a 65 something I'm not sure of I got the motor after it was pulled the 67 went in my girlfriend's 72 Camaro with the only thing done was a krylon rebuild and an H.E.I distributor in front of a turbo 350 instead of the powerslide it really woke up even with the small little two barrel it came with I hounded her for years to let me put a four barrel headers and dual exhaust on it but she wasn't with it she kept saying why so you can beat on it and of course my answer was nooooo just so it can breath better and you'll get better fuel milage ( lies lies lies ) lol that small two barrel sipped the fuel lol anyway we broke up she sold it and I never did ever get to see the potential of a stock 283 with just some small upgrades like a 4 barrel and a free flowing exhaust I assume like any other small block the valve train would be the limiting factor for the Rpms which it really needs if I'm not mistaken and being a small journal motor could with the right heads not too far away from. The output of the infamous 302 so the stroke is a bit shorter it still would spin to the stratosphere and make ungodly power if it was built right but man it's really something you have to get used to the two 69 z28s I rode in were such screamers you'd swear it was about to blow up every time you ran it hard as I said it's something you have to get used to and get that God it's revving to death out of your head lol 7 grand is to your ears a whole different world than the 5 grand or so the average 350 sees but those small journal 283 302 and 327s loved it and lived to fight again another day if they had the roller valve train components we have nowadays holy hell they would really survive to fight another day from what I've been told that's what was the first to go not the bottom end the bottom ends held up just fine even with the oil pressure only at ten ish at idle and 50 ish at higher rpms

    • @richardholdener1727
      @richardholdener1727  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I love the 283-but even the very best one makes a lot less power than a stock truck 4.8L

    • @glennmanchester1568
      @glennmanchester1568 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Absolutely and to make power you had to spin the snot out if it hence short stroke motors shortcoming is just that issue whereas the 4.8 has a decent stroke and bore combination to get the best of both worlds along with the best cylinder heads to ever come off the assembly line and just the overall design taking 50 years of experience with small and big blocks and using that knowledge to make the ultimate small block engine moving the cam tunnel and allowing a larger overall cam diameter changed the game entirely they have profiles now that allow smooth idle with lots of vacuum at idle and and scream at full throttle which was unheard of and impossible actually before ..

      @johnparrish9215 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Phil-rs5wl My thought is this, by using liquid propane with the nitrous you don't have to be concerned with the cars normal fuel system since the propane is self pressurized just like the nitrous. It's also equal to or better octane ratio VS E85. It should be no more difficult to install than a regular nitrous system yet be able to produce more power, it also lowers the intake temp to freezing levels.
      I need to learn more about the direct injected engines because if they can be converted to inject liquid propane instead of gasoline it could be awesome.

      If youre really worried about it, I would use M1 as the fuel for your spray. Methanol is a heat sponge. Guys with roots blowers will get frost on the side of the case under boost. Propane works but doesn't take much more than typical gasoline to evaporate. It's about 40% higher than gasoline but a little more than a third of methanol. Stoic for methanol is also 6.42 where propane is 15.5. At stociometric air fuel, propane has 15.7% the latent enthalpy of vaporization as methanol. Given you can use vinyl tubing to hold methanol and not some high pressure line with high pressure pump to keep it liquid. If all you want is frost on the casting, methanol is an easier and more effective way to do it.

    There were 2 vortec 7400's in the late 90's. One used a distributor in the 2500 and 3500 series trucks and then in the top locks and Kodiak the other used a coil near plug design. Is the big truck 7400 similar to an LS?

    Is it possible to read fuel flow on the dyno and then compare fuel economy from stock vs modified at the same torque points?

    • @timothybayliss6680
      @timothybayliss6680 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You need a really accurate fuel flow meter. You can scale fuel usage with pulse width and lambda but that really only works well with back to back tests. I also don't know if the brake on the dyno can hold the engine at 0rpm per sec. For fuel efficiency testing you want to do sweeps with like 15" of manifold vacuum starting at 1500-2000rpm. Westech can probably do it, but it's a little outside the norm as compared to slamming a cam in and spinning the engine to 7k.

      They stop the lifter from spinning around. It the wheel on the end of the roller lifter turned 90 deg to the cam lobe it would wipe the lobe off. Some late model engines run a cradle thats fixed to the block, that may be something you can modify. Hope this helps.

      31 isn't particularly high. Ls2 guys usually have really good luck with factory thermostat and 27-28°. If it was run at 160°f and it has 9.4 v 10.5;1 compression that's enough for 3 degrees of timing. It might sound a little much but it's in the ball park.
