    The greatest matches of all time in each Grand Slam all have involved Nadal. In my opinion this is the greatest US Open match I have seen (2009 Federer vs Del Potro final is a close second). The best Wimbledon match ever was the 2008 final between Federer and Nadal, the best Australian Open match ever is the 2012 final between Djokovic and Nadal (the 2009 semifinal between Verdasco and Nadal is a close second). And the best French Open match ever was a semi-final between Djokovic and Nadal in 2013. But the point here is Nadal is super entertaining to watch and has had so many wars of attrition!

      No. 2019USO and 2022AO were superior to 2008W and 2012AO. 2008W was the exact same situation as 2019USO when Rafa was ahead 2-0 sets and should have won the 3rd set but almost choked. Federer played HORRIBLY in the first 2.5 sets in 2008W, unlike Medvedev in 2019USO. 2022AO drama was also more fascinating than 2008W and 2012AO. Nadal had no business winning 2022AO but pulled off the miracle.
      2019USO had so much S&V and net points by both players. It was like watching an old 1980s Grand Slam final it was that cool and unique. Nadal and Medvedev played more S&V and net points in the 2019USO F than Federer and Djokovic at the 2019W F!!!

OMG... Rafa... what a fighter .. some of the toughest of shots that he hit.. from toughest positions on the court.. when he was down are unbelievable.. ( and the silly mistakes while giving the lead away -proving he is human after all). After the game.. in the stadium.., it felt like he may have snuck it through.., BUT seeing these highlights prove.., why he deserved this magnificent win every every bit. Thanks to Medvedev... for such a immaculate unimaginable fight. Please keep it up Daniil for Tennis ( next generation) sake. Vamos Rafa... Keep going. @kolkedd I agree, but even if you anticipate, the execution of that shot is extremely difficult!! He is very far back, so Nadal has time to see the ball coming, and he is quite to the left, so Nadal can cover almost any angle. It takes a perfect shot and Medvedev did it.

It was the FIRST time he won this kind of point on his return and not only was it abolutletly perfect, but it gave him the set :P

  • @gherbihicham8506

    An aspect that is overlooked in Nadal's game is his incredible net game, he is perhaps the best net player in the current lineup, not only does he have an amazing touch he is also one of the most consistent at the net, you can clearly see it here he made 50 plays out of 60 at the net, 17 out of 20 serve and volleys that is an incredible stat against such a good baseliner like Medvedev, he also made some pretty good stats and made some incredible volleys against Thiem at the French Open where volleying is super hard.
    Nadal's backhand volley and smash is one of the best in the history of the game, his forehand volley is little bit worse than his backhand volley but is still also quite good and gets the job done.

    • @BrandonSG13
      @BrandonSG13 4 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Gherbi Hicham he does have an incredibly good volley, perhaps what makes it so overrated is he doesn’t over do it
      A reason why those stats are so good is that Nadal only comes to the net when he is sure that it will benefit him, he never panics and runs in, or randomly decides to come in
      Everything is calculated
      From a fed fan :P

    • @thephantomeagle2
      @thephantomeagle2 5 ปีที่แล้ว +111

      The sheer beauty of it is that it's mostly self taught, his uncle was his trainer. Rafa's a natural righty. However, since he has a huge advantage being left handed playing, he taught himself to play left at his uncle's encouragement. That's why you see him with occasional one handed back hands. His forehand goes to the weaker back hand the vast majority of time on most other opponents. Give him a huge advantage in numerous ways. Less running around, a nearly equal backhand, and more.
      He's probably my favorite all time player, mostly, I admit for the fact that he's won the French 12 freaking times which is an unbelievable feat. Djoker has 7 Australians, Federer 8 Wimbledons, and Federer has 5 US opens. Borg is second at the French, which is often regarded as the toughest. For one person to win 12 in nothing short of phenomenal.

    • @mainemceachern1521
      @mainemceachern1521 5 ปีที่แล้ว +42

      John Randall Banks Uncle Toni has debunked this myth - he’s stated that he never forced/encouraged Rafa to play left handed as an advantage. Rather, Rafa initially played with both hands on the racket and evinced a certain ambidexterity in tennis, so he told his nephew that no real tennis player played with both hands and he encouraged him to play whatever way came more naturally (one handed). In the end Rafa wound up keeping his left hand on the racket for forehands. The “lefty forehand to righty backhand” advantage is also a myth, because consider the inverse: most tennis players are right-handed, so their forehands go to the lefty’s backhand. I.e. there’s no relative advantage. The only possible advantage I can think of is that lefties have against righties is that most break points are played from the ad court, from which side a lefty server has an easier time of striking a serve out wide, pulling the returner off the court, while the righty would mostly be hitting serves up the T from the ad court (and this “advantage” presupposes that wide serves are more effective than T serves).

      Nadal had the same problem in the Wimbledon F in 2008 vs Federer. 2-0 sets ahead and at 3-3 in the third set it was 0-40 on Federer's serve. Nadal just had to win one of those break points and he would have likely won the match in straight sets. The rest is history what happened when that Wimbledon final turned into an epic like the 2019 USO F.

      Nadal simply let up at critical points in the third, fourth and fifth sets. This championship should have been over in 3 sets. Nerves got the better of Rafa until fatigue took over in that 5th set with Nadal serving at 5-4. When you are tired you don’t have time to be nervous.

    • @iceescape

      Yeah I agree. Nadal was in total control in the 3rd set and the nerves got to him and let Medvedev back in. Medvedev didn’t start playing any better, Nadal’s serve and shot consistency just went away. But he’s a true champion and found a way to regroup and win when it came down to it.

    😳 OMG.... so many good points and such a dramatic twist and retwist. One month later and I’m still crying with joy from watching this... Medvedev was so close to winning this EPIC of a match but Rafa just willed himself to the victory. VAMOS!!!!! 💪🇪🇸🐂😬🏆!!!!!🎉🎊🎈🥂🍾

    When people say Nadal is just brute force and no technique, or that he doesn't volley well, they should look at this moment: 35:24
    Nadal won the first two sets, but then Medvedev somehow recovered with very agressive and inspired play. He took the next two sets, and everything was going to be decided in the fifth. But it was Medvedev who had the momentum in his favour, so at the beginning of the last set Nadal had to face a very difficult moment: first serving with 0-30, then with 15-40 and two break points to save. In both of those crucial points, he went to the net and finished the point with a touch volley. You have to be very confident in your volley skills to do that.

      @@meriru808 I mean maybe people said that 13 years ago, but I never heard anyone say that

      @Revanth His slice is also fantastic now. He completely ran out of power in his right hand in the fifth set (later during the Laver Cup Nadal said he had a hand injury on his right hand during the USO final), as John McEnroe said during the broadcast. That was why Nadal kept slicing the backhand in the fifth set and luckily for him Medvedev had no idea how to counter an effective backhand slice.

      Also Medvedev was serving phenomenally to lead 2-2, 40-0 in the fifth set. It looked like Nadal was not going to win that Medevedev service game at all. Nadal ended up BREAKING Medvedev in that game!!!!

    Best commentary and best us open final ever for an underdog vs legenda! Medvedev was scary showing his volley skills and some variety but Nadals experience was an advantage! Road to GOAT is visibly possible

    A very great joy to see two baseliners serving and volleying dozens of times, with success rates for each player well over 70%, an absolute delight to see!
