I grew up in Brooklyn, never been to a bar. A new friend took me to my first bar on 6th Ave & 10th Street in the Village and what happened, a flower lady walked in. She was so poor. Bought a flower, had to because of my love of Phil’s song
Phil wasnt just talented, but he was sensitive. He was incredibly perceptive, which is why his music not only exemplifies the 60's but it transcends it.
Everything about him was wonderful: his songs, his lyrics, his amazing singing voice and his caring for humanity. He's one of my personal heroes. For me, he still lives!
Phil used to come to Montreal quite frequently back in these [those!] glory days, to a modest [tiny!] club a stone's throw from McGill University. Introducing 'FLOWER LADY' the very first time he shared it with us, he recounted how he'd been strolling along Sherbrooke Street, rather late one night, winter coming on - when to his great surprise, by the main ['RODDICK'] gates of the University, he stumbled upon a flower lady, seated right there - on the sidewalk - her wares still on display. The encounter moved him immensely - - - profoundly - - - and gave birth to this gorgeous song.
Phils should have brought that FLower Lady on stage and given her a year's earnings in a show and asked for contributions. But the people demanded a Madonna do the minuet for naked millionaires.
Phil was Unquestionably the creator of 60’s protest music. SO many perfect songs, SO many, and on so many topics-War, Race, Poverty, Inequality, etc. This song is so sad and true because I saw those flower ladies in the Village bars back then, as I’m sure Phil did, AND, nobody ever bought any flowers from them. Heartbreaking. Loved Phil at his concerts held every Good Friday night at Carnegie Hall (Chuck Berry actually opened for him once!!!) Miss him every day, that’s why I still play his songs every day. I was fortunate to see Phil at a concert in LA in about 74. Mimi Farina was opening act. She also died prematurely as of course did her husband Richard who was a brilliant writer on a par with Phil and Bob.
The A & M years, a very creative period for Phil. I was fortunate to catch him live at Doug Weston's Troubador in West Hollywood. Took a date who had never heard of him and she was hooked forever.
Try listening to Phil's cover of The Beatles 'I Should Have Known Better' from The Broadside recording; it is seriously funny. God Bless You Phil my forever hero.
There should be a Hollywood movie about this hugely inspirational, and wonderful singer-songwriter-activist. There was talk of Sean Penn playing him years ago but I never heard more of it. Often it takes forever for Hollywood to cover important people, like Oppenheimer.
I wonder if they actually covered his life if they would show his time in Chile. RIP Allende and Ochs. Phil's story doesn't have a happy ending. Hollywood would find a way to bastardize it in my opinion.

In the winter of 1975 I happened to see Phil at Folk City. He had just done a performance in which it was obvious that his voice was gone. Apparently, as the story goes, he was mugged on a trip to Africa and strangled which damaged his vocal chords. After the show, Phil, looking disheveled and hyper, I offered to give him a ride to a bar he just opened called Che'. I also told him about musician friends of mine who would be a great backup band for him. He was in no mood under the circumstances to entertain that idea. I gave him a ride to Che' and said goodbye. In April of '76 I read the he was no more. It was a tragic day for one of the best of the best. RIP Phil Ochs❤️

I love this man's music. To have been siting there where the guy with the sunglasses is sitting observing this show. I never learned of Mr. Ochs until 18 years after his death. I have thoroughly enjoyed listening to his music and doing my own covers of it over the past 28 years.. Phil was a rather liberal fellow, I lean more conservative. No matter. Sometimes I don't like what Phil may be saying, but I will love how he said it...and how he played it and how he sang it. A true artist.

They are pretty young. I would imagine most of them are still alive. Phil Ochs himself would likely still be alive if you didn't kill himself.
