- This is from an out-of-print live album I have that A&M put out in 1990.
It was archived for 20 years until it was dug up and released with the full support of his brother, Michael, amongst others.
Phil performed it at the Pacific National Exhibition Garden Auditorium in Vancouver in early 1969. This was only a few months after the the Lincoln Park riots, where he had witnessed the peaceful protesters be beaten, violated, arrested, humiliated, and tear gassed by the police. Events like those and many like it depressed him immensely, and would eventually lead to the various mental conditions that plagued him and eventually led to his suicide in 1976.
Despite the downheartedness that followed the rest of his career, including this show, it was one of the most beautiful shows he ever did.
The album is called 'There and Now: Live in Vancouver 1968'. The album title date is inaccurate.

Once a Phil Ochs fan, always a Phil Ochs fan!
I saw him in March 1965 at the Unicorn Coffee House in Boston and at the Folk Festival in July at Newport where everyone was there! I love Phil. I can still sing Draft Dodger Rag perfectly. Sad that he felt let down by the movement. I do too but I am still fighting at 72.
I spent time as a teen in the house in Far Rockaway that his sister owned half of where he died. The other half of the house was open for music and chess and conversation. I met Prem Rawat in 72 who shows people inner peace and the joy that comes from that. I wrote a letter to the house residents in 76 that I had an intuition that he needed a lot of love but it was opened too late. I sent videos of Prem to artists I admired for years that if they ever feel out of touch with their inspiration [Phil left a note saying the words didn't come any more] they should learn to turn within where the fountain of feeling never ceases to flow.
This could be one of the best songs ever written.. Profound lyrics.
One of the great, lost troubadours of the 60's - he really meant it.
This song is such a masterpiece. It really takes someone special to sit down with a guitar and a handful of simple chords and write something this epic.
I discovered Phil Ochs when I was 14 in 1967. He is so achingly brilliant and poignant. I still cant listen to him without feeling so desperate and passionate. I truly love and respect him so much. So totally under-rated!

I discovered Phil Ochs in my early twenties in the early 1990's.
@@pontifixmax I discovered him just last week. He is completely unknown here in Europe. I'm 48 and I've been listening to Dylan, Joan Baez, Cohen, Neil Young, Joni Mitchell... my whole life. But how come I had never heard of this genius? He's right up there with them, what an amazing songwriter!
I've been transfixed with Ochs since my introduction to him through Billy Bragg . Pleasures of the Harbor is an outstanding and haunting album. Crucifixion one of his greatest songs.
It is a great song but I have a difficult time getting through it. It depresses me like no other song.
So beautiful, so sad. As was I learning he had died, all these many years ago. I still tear when I hear this. I wish he was with, we need the raised voices. 😢

Phil Ochs was an incredible songwriiter. However, the lyrics to this song surpasses all the others in terms of his songwriting ability.
I feel like When In Rome and Ringing of Revolution are close. Some worthy mentions are The Doll House, Floods of Florence, Song Of My Returning, and Pleasures of the Harbor. However, this song itself is one of the best songs I've ever heard.
