We refer to Rob Halford as the Metal God because he's been singing like that his entire career. Diamonds and Rust, Green Manalishi, and quite a few more songs will give you his capabilities. A true legend regarding metal singing.
Is no one gonna say anything about the thumbnail not even being Judas Priest?! While Ripper Owen's was in the band for a little bit with KK, where's Scott Travis, Glenn Tipton and Ian Hill? 😂
It's been said that listening to Pain Killer for your first ever Judas Priest song is like getting fired out of a cannon into a hurricane. It may be the most intense song they've done in 50 years of music, but it does not show how versatile Rob Halford's voice truly is.
dont know what she's talking about. this is still in the melodic range of metal. where the singer is still actually singing instead of just growling. easy listening
Hi, Maggie... Rob is THE Metal Voice, and he could probably sing the phone book and make it sound amazing. This is probably their most thrashy song, boy there are a lot of other styles he can do. Here's a list of some of my picks, in no order: FIGHT- Immortal Sin HALFORD- Resurrection JUDAS PRIEST - Dissident Aggressor HALFORD- Nightfall FIGHT - Into the Pit JUDAS PRIEST - Peace JUDAS PRIEST - Sinner HALFORD - God Rest You Merry Gentlemen (yes, he does Christmas carols) there are a LOT more, but I can't list everything here because it would take YEARS. Thank you for this video... I love you, and you rock :)
weird suggestions for analyzing Rob's voice... She should listen to for example Blood Red Skies (LIVE from Epitaph), Diamonds and Rust (LIVE from Epitaph), Screaming for Vengeance (LIVE 1983) and even some solo stuff like Silent Screams or Resurrection by Halford
Thanks for doing this reaction Maggie, having a degree in Opera myself, also being the Chairman of the board of directors of the Orlando Symphony Orchestra, I am surprised that you missed the common baroque ground in this music, and the jazz saxophone inspired lead that Glen Tipton played in this song. Also, the way you described Rob's singing style in wrong, you do not pinch to hit those notes, you actually have to be wide open. I think once you listen to this style more and see how closely in matches up classical, particularly baroque period, i.e. Vavaldi's harpsichord works, you may actually start to fully appreciate what you are listening too. Maggie keep on doing what you are doing, and keep learning. Enjoy Juliard!
I always thought this isn't the best introduction to Halford's voice. Is really awesome how Judas Priest changed their sound from the early days to today. Could be interesting to a do a chronological check out (one song for album maybe?)
Do you consider "Welcome Home" by King Diamond to not be a best introduction to his voice? This is the way this song is supposed to sound. If you consider it "strange" or "weird" it's because you don't understand the sound of metal from that era. Painkiller is considered to be one of the best albums to introduce anyone to when getting into Judas Priest. Every song on that album is a metal classic.
@@eyesofascension8678 i love painkiller, the song and the whole album, it’s maybe the best metal album in history. I’m just saying another thing. Halford has so many skills with his voice, and this song isn’t the best “first taste” for someone who isn’t into heavy metal
I am not a singer but I can mimic what you were doing but you can't mimic what he is doing you want to go ahead and find the music and sing over top of it like you think it's so easy
Hoooooo boy, you’re going to catch a lot of crap for putting the incorrect band’s picture up first…that’s “KK’s Priest”, NOT Judas Priest (HUGE story behind that!)…KK was a founding member who departed around 2011(?) and Tim “Ripper” Owens was vocalist f/ 2 albums during 90’s…this song has KK but Rob Halford is the METAL GOD of vocalists and their definitive voice (although Ripper is awesome in his own right)… I DO recommend going a little further back into their catalog, like “Victim Of Changes”, “Dissident Aggressor”, “Electric Eye”, “Freewill Burning”, oh so many…
Thank you. Noticed the same thing. Wrong pic - not JP. Epic song, great reaction. Agree to really appreciate Rob, need to review their many variations of metal. So so many songs to choose from. One suggestion to hear not only his range but his skill is the combo Dreamer Deceiver, Deceiver done in the mid 70s.
WHo else was totally confused by the band picture she put on screen at the intro? Took me a second to realize that it was actually not Judas Priest but KK's Priest xD
Judas Priest was one of the founders of the Heavy Metal genre at the end of the 1960s. But it took over a decade before they got much airplay, record sales or concert attendance. And then they got a lot. It is true that they did improve noticeably over that period. But I think it was more that other metal bands of less extreme approaches got the public more willing to accept the overall genre. There was also (IMO) less competition for that particular audience who were turned off by styles like ska, New Wave that minimized guitar presence, electro-dance and the like. This is when Judas Priest came into their own, inheriting some of the Punk audience as well. Great reaction and analysis! I agree that getting exposed to a new style of music and understanding what it is all about can lead to an appreciation of genres that one might have ignored otherwise. Like, for example, opera. 🤣 So when are you going to offer a class on how to sing like Rob Halford? Or like a rock guitar? 🎸
Painkiller is the song that people who think they are Judas Priest fans recommend. The obviously more "accessible" songs are Living after Midnight, You've Got Another Thing Coming, and Breaking the Law. So the next song is this. Really if you want to hear Priest you need Exciter, Dreamer Deceiver, and Victim of Changes.
It's. Great metal music this is the kind of song to drive to with the petal to the floor you got to love it when people make fun of a iconic metal band that I'm sure will have a lot longer career than most bands

It's really funny the fact that the image in the beginnig and in the end of your video is not Judas Priest. Actually, they are KK's Priest. A band with two former members of Judas (three if we count Les Binks) and their departure was not in the best of terms... Good video.
I would never have someone listen to Painkiller as their first Judas Priest song. Like others have said below, go back to the late 70's and listen to some of those tunes first on through the 80's. Maggie, a recommendation from The Acoustic Rabbit Hole: Before Beach House became the current voice of “Dream Pop,” there was as 90’s band “The Cocteau Twins,” which featured lush electric guitar layers with a female soprano voice who only used vowels and inflections to sing (no words, or instead using words that were annunciated as un-recognizable.). The effect was otherworldly. People would as me if I was playing Enya, even though it was all electric guitars. My recommendation from them is “Carolyn’s Fingers,” And, I actually remastered the audio for that video on my sub-channel, The A-432 Zone, if you do choose this video. No need to credit me, but DO discover the magic this song that uses full-fledged operatics in the Dream Pop world! // Be well! - The Acoustic Rabbit Hole
It’s amazing to see you grow in your musical understanding! Watching you react to the music I’ve loved my whole life is inspirational. Keep up the great job ❤️🔥🤟
Dreamer Deceiver/ Deceiver off of Sad Wings of Destiny the studio version will be my pick for Robs greatest vocal. A magical rollercoaster ride through his ranges. Then check out NeObliviscaris Intra Venus or Forget Not!
Hi, Maggie. I appreciated what you said about going into metal and other extreme musical forms with some preparation. I imagine that you’re familiar with Schönberg’s “Pierrot Lunaire” pieces. When you’ve had a bit of preparation, those works are pretty damn cool, but not for the beginner.
Painkiller was on the music video game Rock Band, that I had on the Wii. I remember singing to it, because my friend was better playing the game guitar. It was fun trying to sing it, well not completely. Besides practically blowing out my vocal chords, I would try to last as long as Rob Halford at that last stretch he does at the end of the song. It was fun to try, but I fell just short after several tries.
Ohhh, Maggie. You have soooo much to learn about Rob Halford! Check out "Victik of Changes (studio)", "Beyond the Realms of Death", "Freewheel Burnin'", almost any Priest song, There's NOBODY as diverse as Rob Halford. And STILL performing to this day while in his 70's!
Love you Maggie!! Your channel is awesome ! I can’t recall if you have reacted to “victim of changes “ by Judas Priest . If you haven’t , you are missing out . That’s 1 vote for that epic song . Take care and god bless lady!!
Important note: after the song, that's actually a photo of KK's Priest, not Judas Priest. Figured I'd let you know that.

Dreamer Deceiver/ Deceiver off of Sad Wings of Destiny the studio version will be my pick for Robs greatest vocal. A magical rollercoaster ride through his ranges. Then check out NeObliviscaris Intra Venus or Forget Not!
How about show the right picture of Judas Priest. You showed KK’s Priest. Not the same
Hi, Maggie. I appreciated what you said about going into metal and other extreme musical forms with some preparation. I imagine that you’re familiar with Schönberg’s “Pierrot Lunaire” pieces. When you’ve had a bit of preparation, those works are pretty damn cool, but not for the beginner.
When we can hear of our fist metal gig reactions? :)
You need to listen to Dreamer Deceiver live
Ohhh, Maggie. You have soooo much to learn about Rob Halford! Check out "Victik of Changes (studio)", "Beyond the Realms of Death", "Freewheel Burnin'", almost any Priest song, There's NOBODY as diverse as Rob Halford. And STILL performing to this day while in his 70's!
This is the song you play, when someone ask what is Heavy Metal... This whole album is amazing.
This is the song you play when someone wants to know what it's like to get beat up in the bathroom of a sweaty, leather and chains, hardcore gay bar.
