I love how each element has a different mentality for it's fighting style. Earth is, elementally, Aang's opposite. This was Katara's theory as to why Aang couldn't get Earth bending as quickly as the other elements. There is also the change in mentality that Aang has to grasp as well. Attacking and taking things head on is so opposite from how he approaches things up to that point. This is probably my favorite part of the lore.

Yeah you're thinking right direction in the discussion there, you can absolutely come at each element with the thinking of a different style. Similarly, it was probably so easy for Aang to pick up Waterbending because his way of thinking from Airbending was easy to translate into the flow of water. Another thing worth considering, whilst Aang's personality is very Airbender, not all benders align so perfectly with their natural bending style. It's possible Iroh was able to invent a way to redirect lightning because he is very open minded, and has a personality that aligns very well with the 'go with the flow' nature of Waterbending.
