This is the kind of show where you watch a whole season in a day and freak out that there isn't more. It's like a rip tide. You are grabbed and pulled along through chaos and emotion and left in awe of the cast and crew. SO FUCKING GOOD
Seems like you’d forget it easier if you didn’t at least catch a sleep between episodes for it to sink in, sounds rough. Watched it with someone else, one ep at a time as you would, and it was a blast for weeks (just like these react series!!)
@@Xanderj89 i finished it all in a day. i found a void inside me afterwards
literally what happened to me back in november. found it on a lazy sunday night. was done by early morning of tuesday. my wife was not happy.
Yes… and that we did. And I was late for work because of it. 🤣
Show is outstanding!
Then watched the second season the next day.
I finished this show yesterday, watched both seasons in less than 24 hours and i already can't wait to re-watch it but slower. It's just so good I can't believe I thought I wouldn't like a show about cooking even though I had heard it's good 🤣🤣
as a chicagoan, WE ARE NOT EAST COAST. we are THE midwest city. and the hard-nose attitudes of the characters have less to do with Chicago’s culture, which contrary to popular belief is actually quite mellow and friendly, and more to do with general machismo culture of professional kitchens
period
No I mean Richies attitude is 100% supposed to be like a stereotypical chicago dude. Might not be accurate to everyone but that’s why it’s a stereotype
nah minneapoils is the midwest city
Ebon moss-bachrach is his name and he is excellent. Hes also in Andor which I highly recommend whether you like star wars or not.
I second this. Andor is prestige TV up there with better call Saul, etc.
Third vote for Andor!
bear and andor squad sound off
Andor sounding off
He’s also Lieberman in “The Punisher” with Jon Bernthal.
Based on 2 seasons, The Bear is already one of the best television shows I have ever seen. A triumph on every level. I can't wait for you to start really getting to know the characters and their dynamics.
I’m personally only two eps in and already I think they balance the drama, comedy, and just general chaos better than most shows I’ve seen
I’ve worked lines in kitchens on the east coast, west coast, and deep south, hole in the wall bar kitchens and places with custom crystalware on every table. Most of them, if they were worth half a shit, had people who gelled like they do in the family meal scene.
It ain’t a Chicago thing, east coast thing, it’s a cook thing. When you’re on the line, neck deep in the weeds, and the ticket printer is a thing of sheer terror, you’ve got to be able to deal with the heightened emotions and tempers of the strong personalities around you. In comparison to that, affectionate roasting when you’re all chilling having a drink or pre-shift smoke is just like, well, it’s affectionate. It’s camaraderie.
You just started a journey into one of the best television shows in history. The writing, the acting, the technical aspects. One word "Forks".
I manage restaurants and later on became a chef and I can completely relate to this show.
Love that! Glad to see the show did this such justice.
Matty Matheson is an actual chef. The big fella with the mustache and backwards ball cap. He has a TH-cam channel and he’s fucking hilarious.
Matty is also executive producer on The Bear! First found with Dead Set on Life on Vice. Dude is super funny and a seriously talented chef!
That claustrophobic style of filming doesn’t quit either. There are moments when I felt like I couldn’t breathe due to the tight shots. Such an intense show with SO much heart. Looking forward to your reactions.
On first watch, you don't realize how important that final scene is.
Just finished binging this series and you're right. Completely forgot about the can until I saw this reaction.
So excited for you to watch the rest of this show!! Episode 7 is one of the best episodes of TV I’ve ever seen, and then season 2 manages to reach those heights in almost every episode 👌
This show is watching people gain a passion for something and learn to respect each other and it's the best show.
Peak TV, and I'm here for this, Jeff
As someone who worked as a line cook in a busy local restaurant & bar for 5 years, I can confirm that this show is a pretty accurate depiction of working in the restaurant world. (Including the shouting, constant arguing, and the high tension of working close-quarters with other people in a very stressful, fast-moving environment, LOL)
as a chef who worked his way up from a line cook since the age of 15... this show gave me nam esque flashbacks 🤣
Carmy was absolutely getting his a** whooped by a carrot. 😂😂 I totally forgot about this scene. I love this show. I was hooked from the first episode. Everyone looked unpolished and plucked right off the street. Sadly rare to see in American TV and films. Very happy to see you review this from a filmmaking perspective. Let's goooo!
LMAOOO NOT THE “HELP THE BEAR” BAR FROM MYSTIKAL 😭😂
Bro I’m so hyped so many people know about this hahaha
I have a decade in the industry, this show gave my coworkers and I so much anxiety. 😅
All the videos of pro chefs reacting to this show and I’ve been waiting so long for someone in film to do one and shout out the insane level editing. Glad to see you called it out immediately it’s definitely one of the strongest points of the series.
Agree about the insert shots! This is a show that cares about details. Through inserts and zooms, this show makes you pay attention to the small things in beautiful ways. It appreciates well, in the way that a well cooked meal makes you notice the layers of flavor and texture. There's a montage in season 2, in the episode Sundae that I had to watch twice in a row. Magnificent stuff.
It's dope you are reacting to this show. Have you seen any other FX shows besides Fargo, like Sons of Anarchy or Snowfall? If you are a fan of John Singelton, Boyz in the Hood and such, it's a must.
Food films and tv shows have become a favourite genre of mine - check out Chef, Big Night, Burnt (not the best but it's ok), The Hundred Foot Journey, Boiling Point (the short, then feature film, then tv series - it's a whole thing)
such weird timing, i just finished season 2 yesterday for NYE. It's really fucking good. Just wait till you get to the christmas episode in S2
You awkwardly rapping Mystikal out of no where in the beginning is a great example for why I keep coming back to this channel.
LMFAO. Great reason right here!
I love the Bear. Really charming cast and great directing. The culinary world is very fascinating and intimidating.
Thanks, James! 🍽 The first two seasons are brilliant. Looking forward to Season 3... perhaps by next autumn?
Gonna sub to that Patreon now lol I need these thangs in full length, no pause.
LMFAOOO see ya there fam!
This series is so great. Glad you're along for the ride. There is so much Filmmaking ("F" was capitalized for a reason) happening here that I bet you'll have tons to add to conversation.
So excited to see you react to the Bear it is so excellent, will be following your reactions closely
It’s a good time! Happy New Year 👌🏽
I've been working in restaurants for 13 years. This is the most accurate representation of working in a kitchen.
unbelievably kind, unbelievably stressful, unbelievably great show. enjoy the ride.
Bit if an update: after watching your reaction to this episode, I decided to dive into the series myself. I binged it, now I am looking forward to your reactions. Thank you James for your reactions and recommendations!!!
This show completely blew me away. I watched it on a whim, totally blind. I only knew Jeremy Allen White was starring it in and just wow. S2 is some of the best television I've ever watched.
Happy New Years everyone :)

Have a great day y'all!
I am insanely impressed that it only took you the first 5 seconds of the show to compare it to Uncut Gems and Good Time. Most people don't start the comparisons until the actual chaos and relentless swearing begins lmao.
I love this show. The characters in it feel so real. And they grow on you. Some like a fungus but they all grow on you. And it's not Carmy and Sugar's dad who died recently. It's their brother. Fun fact: the restaurant is inspired by a real place and the dude selling the beef out of the back of his car is played by the owner of the IRL place.
YOOO LETS GO this one is PEAK bro, you're gonna get so anxious so get ready 😂🎉
So hype you are watching this! One of my favorite shots in all of television is in this series! Cant wait till you get to that episode!🙌🏼
"I know you're not getting jumped by a carrot" omg LOL 😂
😭
Love that you're watching this bro
Dude, you're gonna fucking love this show. A little touch of characterization that I really love is that Richie is an avid reader. It's something you might not expect, but gives extra texture and dimension to him.
Happy New Years bro and yes, onto one of my fave shows. The flow of this show is downright nuclear. It actually matches the conditions of the restaurant biz. Almost claustrophobic and when done with the day you almost take on a whole different persona. But tomorrow's already here and it starts again. You won't find another show to match this. Hope you enjoy as much as I think you will. And you say The Punisher huh? Wellllll. 😅
Same, can’t find that here in the west 💔
Nice James. I watched this show on a lark and was struck with its originality and honesty. I can only imagine you're going to love this. Truly engaging character driven storytelling.
PLEASE DO LIKE 3 EPS AT ONCE ITS SO GOOD
I'm a professional cook have been for years and currently am. THIS SHOW NAILS IT. NAILS EXACTLY how kitchens are. Maybe crazier but then you just hired bad people. 😂 Should 20 out of 10 show. ❤❤❤
Absolutely love this show! One of my favorites!
I loved this show BEFORE I watched an entire episode.
NOTE: the very funny joking around pops out at you. when you know more about what's going on in their lives.
Really interesting how you mentioned PIG, as the two are very similar- not only because of the cooking, but the grieving or lack thereof.
Dude, "Good Time" is so awesome. Totally missed gem out there. Great call out.
Edit: "Pig" too! Fantastic. Check out "Dinner Rush", 2000 with Danny Aiello and John Corbett. It's the perfect kitchen movie with a side of mobster action that you never knew you needed
I also just started watching the show. Previously, I assumed it was over hyped. NAH, it’s so damn good.
Yeah this slapped hard. Loved this series!
If you've somehow missed the movie "Big Night" with Stanley Tucci and Tony Shalhoub, you owe it to yourself to watch it. A great movie from the 90s about brothers, a struggling restaurant, great food, great music, takes place in New Jersey. Watch it!
Can't wait for you to do episode 7. Its MASTER filmography. IYKYK. I don't want to ruin the surprise for you and am gonna love watching you figure it out/realize it when you get to that ep.
Just finished bingeing this show - it took me about 4 episodes to REALLY get into it. Absolutely loved it and can't wait for S4. It was so well written, so well directed and acted! The acting and directing is so good, I felt like I was watching REAL people going through all this stuff. Amazing.
Okay yeah, bringing Shia LeBouef as the missing brother would fit perfectly and make for the craziest plot twist ever. Great call.
I know it's been said to you for sure my dude, but this ain't east coast. The this is the absolute beating heart of the *urban midwest*, my dude. The captured essence of Chicago, Milwaukee, and Cleveland.
cannot blush about this show enough, if you catch an itch for stressful, chef-related media, "Boiling Point" starring Stephen Graham is a must watch, i won't spoil the film's selling point, so i'll just say i'm sure you'd love it and i'm sure everyone else would love to see you watch it.
Love.
RICHY IS THE BEST. He’s one of those people that you’d want to murdur in real life but in a show and on camera he’s just so fucking entertaining and his character gains so much depth with genuinely every singular episode. Almost every conversation in this show has a point and an effect their is not really any wasted shot or moment.
Damn...I can't wait for him to get to "Fishes" 😂
Edit: also pretty sure "Forks" is one of my favorite episodes of TV in recent memory
This show came out when I really needed it. My life wasn’t particularly shitty but every show out felt shitty lol then this came out and literally the shots the acting the writing the story the pacing the accuracy EVERYTHING was on point.
Richie being grateful for Philip K Dick shows he's an intelligent person. He could accomplish great things if he applied himself.
Speaking of bears, you should watch "Grizzley Man."
Really enjoying your channel. Keep up the good works. I caught your Oceans 11 reaction the other day It is one of my favorite films I think. Also wanted mention Bernie Mac I saw in Bad Santa the other day that movie is something else Billy Bob Thornton is hilarious lol. I definitely recommend especially the unrated Badder Santa version lol. Has to be seen to be believed hilarious.
Can’t wait till you get to Fishes and Forks in season 2.
FLAWLESS television.
''The Bear'' is a play on Carmy's last name, and his own nickname as well. I'm sure as you've watched the show its become more obvious since multiple people reference him as ''bear'', and his brother as ''Mikey bear''. Its also a pretty sweet nod to Chicago with The Bears being our team. Lots of different avenues with the name and its a beautiful beast of a show.
I watched two episodes of this but didn't continue. Maybe with your commentary, I'll like it more.
Fun fact: it's very briefly mentioned, but Sydney has experience working at Alenia, which is only one of thirteen restaurants in the US that has been given the three Michelin Star award, and she still gave that up to work as sous for Carmy. That very subtly (and not so subtly to those in the culinary world) tells that Carmy really is one of the best chefs in the world.
Nah man, I grew up in Portland, Oregon. My dad went to culinary school, he's been in kitchens longer than I've been alive, and I've spent enough time in them to know that this is just how a lot of cooks are. This show knows for a fact what kitchen culture is.
Can’t be the only one that thinks Faks looks like the camera man from scream-the one Gale kept calling Jesus.
I’ve rewatched several episodes of this show, but this is for first rewatch of the first ep. I never noticed how pronounced Richie’s Chicago accent is before. Does he lose it as the episodes progress? It was just so “DA BEARS” that I never noticed before.
YOOO LETS GO this one is PEAK bro, you're gonna get so anxious so get ready 😂🎉
It’s important to say the real chef knifes of that caliber are EXPENSIVE they take care of them like samurai’s take care of their katanas or soldiers their muskets. A single chip on the blade is hundreds of dollars
I've been enjoying your ASIP series, and now The Bear?! I had to sub so I don't miss anything 👍🏻
i remember watching this show for the first time because i keep seeing those memes of jeremy allen white on twitter lol and i didn't expect it to be THIS good. season 1 is amazing, but season 2 definitely is a whole different level. can't wait for you to watch the Fishes episode because that episode is insane 😭
So, the fat dude with the moustache is a real famous chef from Toronto. He also did a lot of their "script expert" stuff. I'm not even kidding.
Definitely here for the The Bear journey. 🤘🏻🤘🏻
I’m starting this tomorrow myself!! What a surprise. It’s been far too long since I’ve started a show and I figured The Bear was the perfect candidate
I didn't realize the actor playing Richie was also my favorite part from the punisher. This guy really shone in that, he built a whole human out of very little. Glad to see he's getting roles worthy of his talent.
Chef here.. This is the most realistic show made about the business in my opinion. They really captured the stress and the service nightmares :D
Initially stoped watching this show because it gave me so much anxiety. So glad I stuck with it. One of the, if not the, best show out there now. Great call on the Safdie Bros. movies, which also gave me extreme anxiety.
Genius to compare the anxiety and editing this show brings to Safdie Brother films (Good Time and Uncut Gems). Besides Better Call Saul, this is the show I’m most excited to see you react to and deconstruct in real time. Cheers from Maine!
Love Maine! Cheers! Happy to see you are vibing with these videos already 🤘🏽
There’s a film with Stephen Graham called Boiling Point that was set in a kitchen and received acclaim
10:14 Pig was not what I expected. It was thoroughly enjoyable
This show made me feel so stressed out, I had to stop watching it. I'm getting over the flu so maybe that didn't help with me feeling overwhelmed lol. I'll give it a try again
I reinstated my Hulu subscription for Season 2!!!
Yep. I'm about to do the same.
So glad you are reacting to this series. It's so good. Looking forward to your comments and thoughts on all the aspects of it. Cheers!
Fak, the guy fixing the arcade and other stuff is actually a real chef and did a lot of the consulting of the cooking in this show. Funny that here’s playing this role of the fixer
Fyi the first episode is shot by a completely different DP then the rest of the season, and the set wasn’t really complete so it was shot much more close-in and claustrophobic.
i love the symbolism of throwing away the tomato sauce once you finish the first season and how much it comes full circle.
This show is soooooo damn good! Easily one of the best shows I’ve ever seen and, to me, it only comes second to Reservation Dogs which I really hope you’ll react to at some point as well! Can’t wait to see the rest of your reactions to this show!
Richy is one of my favorite tv characters in the past 3 years. He feels as fleshed out as breaking bad characters
a bit late, and it's been quite a while since i commented here, but im happy to see you're starting this one. one of my favorite newer shows, it's phenomenal and i cant wait for season 3
I always thought he looked like a young Gene Wilder! People wanted him to play the new Wonka and I agree with that!!
It’s because I feel anxiety and don’t know this food/culture lifestyle that I love this series so much! The writing, acting, cinematography, editing (pace, energy), characters - all of it - is why I love the show so much.
Good call on the “Pig” movie reference. Nic Cage got a lot of Oscar buzz at the time - it’s that good! In a different direction, but about food, is the com-dram “Chef.”
i fucking love and adore chef! it’s so good
Glad you’re doing this series next! I LOVE this show
Word has it that Lip Gallagher became a line cook after Tammi left him and took their daughter with her.
I don’t think iv ever binge watched a show faster than this. Went in blind, and ended up being more attached to the characters in 2 seasons, than I have through 6+ seasons of other shows.
Exactly how I went into it.. fell in love with the whole story and mind blown 🫶🏾
i just started the bear too this is awesome, i love your channel and ive been loving your better call saul reactions too
happy to hear! it’s a pretty good duo when it comes to weekly uploads. I enjoyed watching them both back to back!
Midwest friend. It's that midwest chicago vibe.
Oh, man is about to watch Peak!
Also 3:04 is the moment I knew this show was gonna be Amazing
oh man oh man oh maaaaaaaan!!! you gonna love this series and I'm gonna love watching along!!
How are there comments from a month ago when this video was just posted today??
