I think we need more reserves, public or private, willing to take on Red Wolves. Maybe also, if we're radio collaring them, make the collars a bright color & tell people in the area to let them go if they see such a collar.
I don't really mean to start something online. But there are complications with this. The red wolf and the eastern wolf are compatible with the American coyote (in terms of breeding). Because of the adaptability of the coyote, it's hard to keep them out of anywhere. Virtually impossible as some many billions of dollars spent since the 1800s have shown. So having red wolves in a preserve connected to the mainland or not otherwise perfectly protected from roaming coyotes will only result in a hybrid wolf coyote (the case in much of the east now - and the subject of much debate : coywolf) instead of preserving the red wolf, the species will be lost to hybridization. Loss of habitat is a massive factor of course, but the problem is now more developed. The real obstacle now is that the attempt to eradicate coyotes in the 18 and 1900s resulted in their spread across North America. I don't remotely mean to suggest we should go back to that tactic. I just want to expand the conversation to include the more nuanced aspects of dealing with this conservation topic.
@@brotherpinehunt It also occurred to me at one point that sterilizing & releasing coyotes might have better results than just shooting them.
