    Jack, I literally can't thank you enough for saying the names of the translators! In my very first seminar on professional translation, we were told that our "names will be forgotten, written in small in the back, and our work will never really appreciated because we are mere translators", so hearing you say the names gives a little hope that it won't happen!

    • @carinam.9447
      @carinam.9447 2 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      In German books that have been translated from other languages the name of the translator may not be on the cover, but at least on the main title page inside most of the time :) at least from my experience cataloging library books, where the translators are almost always put into the catalog as well.

    • @benikakruzelova2332
      @benikakruzelova2332 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@carinam.9447 That's great! Where I'm from, the names of translators are usually in the general description of books (along with date released, edition, etc.). Only poetry and Shakespeare's plays are distinguished based on the translator.

    • @dreamland7078
      @dreamland7078 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Well where I'm from actually the translator's name is written along the name of the author and people can chose which translator's work they wanna read, I mean there are usually more than one person translating a book in different publications, don't let them ignore your hard work

    • @Alittlefruitgoesalongway

      I try to remember the translators of books I really like. I love to read books from around the world and really like to dive into several books from a country to learn more about it.
      One big example for me, Big love to Pevear & Volokhonsky for their amazing Russian classics!

    I wrote my thesis on Shin Kyung Sook's works (not Violets though because it wasn't yet translated and it was hard to find copies of her works in Korean) and I'm really excited to hear your opinion on her writing!

    • @kindateia

      She is my favorite author! What was the thesis about?

    • @nicolechirilov7603
      @nicolechirilov7603 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@kindateia I analyzed the underlying feminist aspects present in two of her novels: The Girl Who Wrote Loneliness and Please Look After Mom. You probably know this but she is not an openly declared feminist writer so I basically focused on those aspects that could be overlooked at first glance. 😊

    • @kindateia
      @kindateia 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@nicolechirilov7603 very cool! :0 Yes, the fact that she isn't vocal about her beliefs really does make analysing her works a more interesting thing. For example, we can pretty much tell from some of her works that some of her heroines have subtle traits in their lifes we would typically associate with wlw heroines (Violets is of course the most outward we have it in English), but it is never said or explored outright (not saying it is necessarily needed because novels are of course not about that) and we never hear her speak on it outside of her novels. Analysing her works, all we have to go off of is literally just her works, and it's such an interesting place to be.

    • @nicolechirilov7603
      @nicolechirilov7603 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@kindateia I totally agree. There is a similar dynamic in The Girl Who Wrote Loneliness/A Lonely room (wlw dynamic) but it is very hard to conclude that romantic feelings are indeed involved in the characters' relationship because everything is very subtle and often masked by fascination and admiration.
      On another note the feminist aspects of her work do not end with the wlw dynamic.. they are also hidden in her portrayals of the historical events that involved women (in The Girl Who Wrote Loneliness especially since most of the "action" takes place in the 70's when women were forced/had no other choice but to work in factories) and in the identity of women as individuals not just as mothers (as seen in Please Look After Mom)
      There's not a lot I can say about Violets because I have yet to read it but maybe I'll come back here after I finish it. Thank you so much for your input though.

    • @kindateia
      @kindateia 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@nicolechirilov7603 I really couldn't be happier discussing about this with you. Nobody I know read her but her works mean so much to me!! Thanks so much! I am also glad I was not just seeing this, because The Girl Who Wrote Loneliness totally had something that seemed like a wlw dynamic, and then I found out it was so largely autobiographical and just felt not right about assuming. But then internet had no info about it at all! Shin Kyung-Sook really keeps to herself so you can never know directly. She has really developed and thought-through views on the world on a lot of topics though, as I particularly noticed in the Court Dancer, so she probably has something on her mind, just doesn't say it.
      And - yes, as a history student, I too really enjoy the way she shows as women in history. Sometimes the most feminist approach about talking about them is just being honest and attentive, and she is. It is upsetting how rarely I see this, but in her books women feel more real rather than fictional characters, if that makes sense.

    I love that you'll be reading argentinian literature ❤ btw, some context on The Adventures of China Iron, there's a classic book in Argentina called Martin Fierro and it's about the life and adventures of a gaucho, his partner "la china" is a character that has barely any presence in it, and that book is the author imagining her journey.

    Oh my god if u enjoy Kyung-sook Shin read "Please Look After Mother" by her! It's a hugely popular book by her about a mother that goes missing and as her family is looking for her they realise they never really knew the woman they called mom, starting off with how none of them had a recent picture of her for the missing persons poster. You get the perspective of the daughter, son, husband, and then the mom herself. It was deeply emotional for me, I felt everything from sadness, hope, guilt, anger, etc.
    I read her goal with this book was "to show how mothers whom we rely on to protect us may also be fragile beings in need of care" and I think she really hit the mark.

    After hearing about Loop, if you're looking for another retelling of the Odyssey I recommend Margaret Atwood's the Penelopiad. I'm currently writing an essay about it for school where I'm comparing it to Circe by Madeline Miller.

    I would like to recommend some more books that weren't originally published in English:
    War and turpentine by Belgian author Stefan Hertmans. The author tells about the life of his grandfather. It's really beautiful
    I'm currently reading The books of Jacob by Polish author Olga Tokarczuk. I haven't completely finished, but i'm close. It's about Jacob Frank, a false Messiah in the 18th century. It's long and weird and the beginning is hard to get through but it's completely worth it.
    There is no English translation of this book, but it's originally in French and i remember you mentioning that you were learning French, so if you ever feel like reading a novel in French, i highly recommend Les jardins de Zagarand by Éric de Kermel. It's an exploration of another way of life in harmony with nature and with each other. It's beautiful and my favorite book of all time!

    Charco Press publish South American authors. I ❤️ them & think you can close your eyes & point at their catalogue & never be disappointed( unless it is written in Spanish, which i can't read☺️)I love 'Die my love ' & 'Elena knows. ' Next on my Charco TBR is 'Bricklayers' by Selva Almada & ' Loop.' They also have some books that actual translators have done like Sophie Hughes who translated Paradais & Jennifer Croft. Looking forward to getting to those. I love them & would think I was in heaven to get a box like that 😍.

    I love your videos and also I would love to suggest a book. It's called 'The rage that remains' by Mareike Fallwickl. She is an austrian author and feminist. The book was written during the pandemic and focuses on what happens to a family if the mother, the primary care giver, isn't there anymore. I think this would be right up your alley. All the best!

    So excited for you to enter this whole new world that is latin-american literature! And I must say, as a Brazilian, you have to look more into our literature; Clarice Lispector, José Saramago, Machado de Assis... there's also one book that I highly recommend that is called "Pacientes que curam" by Julia Rocha.

    Scattered All Over The World by Yoko Tawada was translated from Japanese and is a really interesting dystopian, it is even described as a "cheerful dystopian". It is also the first book in a planned trilogy. Great book, totally recommend it!

      Some recommendations: Farewell Anatolia by Dido Sotyriou, Petros' war by Alki Zei, Imaret, three gods- one city by Yiannis Kalpouzos. The first is about the struggles that a young man faces during the raid of Smyrne and afterwards, the second is about a boy names Petros and how he deals with the awful conditions that Greece faces during ww2 and the third is about two men born 1854 on the same day, one a Greek and one a turk (during this time most of greece was captive by the Ottoman empire) and how their lives go from there as they become basically brothers despite their many differences on the surface

    You could absolutely do a whole video on books from argentina/ Latin America. It would be fascinating to see your reaction to some of the literature about the dictatorships that spanned across the continent in pieces such as La Muerte y La Doncella by Ariel Dorfman (Chile) or Decir sí by griselda gambaro (argentina).
