  • A tour of the Flying Disc Ranch in Thermal, CA. The date farm is setup using some permaculture principles. Fruits are growing in a food forest style with an upper story of date palms shielding sun off a lower store of figs, pomegranates, and citrus. A permanent grass cover crop aerates the land, provides biomass, and keeps the soil cool. No chemical fertilizers are used on the farm. Everything is composted and rock dust is applied to the soil. The farm is flood irrigates in an area that gets about 2 inches of rain a year and summertime temperatures are regularly in the teens. Other properties nearby that were also flood irrigated looked no where near this lush. It is the principles of permaculture that help to maximize and conserve every ounce of water applied to the soil. Video was taken in May 2012.
Flying Disc Ranch is tropical desert filled with a forest of date palms with a lush undergrowth of citrus of all flavors. We maximize the soil by adding compost, water, and living mulch. We maximize the sun and aerate the water to increase fertility.
