How Dates are Grown on a Permaculture No-Till Date Farm in the Desert

- John from www.growingyourgreens.com/ goes on a field trip to Flying Disc Ranch, a Date farm who grows dates using no-till, permaculture, biodynamic and organic growing practices. You will see from pit to date on how this palm tree grows and produces delicious fruit.
In this episode, you will learn how date palm trees are grown, and all the stages of date palm growth and some of the farming practices that must be done to ensure high-quality date fruit are being grown.
First, John will compare standard agriculture practices that ruin the fertility of the soil, and share with you a better way: a no-till permaculture food forest in the middle of the desert that is growing a wide variety of tree crops as well as other crops.
You will see the different stages of date palm tree growth and learn how long it takes a date palm to produce edible fruit.
You will learn why bagging dates to protect them from the insects, pets and the weather is really important.
You will discover some of the many practices that must be done on a regular basis to ensure your date palms get large and delicious fruit.
You will learn why this farm does not use synthetic, chemical fertilizers and what they use instead to add nutrients and build their soil so their trees can produce some of the highest quality dates.
You will discover how soil-conserving practices, such as no-till farming, permaculture food forest, keeping the ground covered and adding compost really help this food forest style farm thrive in the middle of 120-degree weather.
Finally, John will interview the farmer, Robert Lower about this date farm he started in 1979. He will ask him the following questions:

Hey! Flying Disc Ranch is in my neighborhood! I live in Imperial County, Slab City, just south of ya'll. I'm in the beginning stages of developing a permaculture here, focusing on moringa and incorporating citrus, fish, dates, desert peach, perennials and annuals. Anything that will grow, survive and produce with minimal water and excessive heat. We might hit freezing a few nights a year, but the wind! Lordy, that wind! I have experience growing in Illinois, but the rules are much different here in the desert. Thank you John! You have helped me a lot over the last two years in learning and preparing.
Imperial County is supposedly the most impoverished country in the United States and Slab City is made up of some of the most impoverished people. My goal is to first grow vegetables to feed my egg laying hens and one rooster, feed my camp mates here in Flamingo Camp and then offer food to all Slab City restaurants and visitors, combat malnutrition and help people prevent or resolve health issues. I've learned through my childhood of starvation, learned through adulthood of diabetes and all the secondary complications, food is either poison or medicine. It's a matter of knowing the truth and discerning what is false but being taught as truth. I will most definitely be contacting Flying Disk Ranch very soon!

Nice farm and great interview with Robert. He's right about using the old pest remedies. My grandma and my mom used fruit in a jar baits and my mom used Coors Light in metal pans for slugs.

Hi John, I grew up part time in Palm Desert with my Grandma. I used to play on the lots where dates and pomegranates were grown. The developers have taken out so many of the date fields, it is sooo sad. I spoke out at City council meeting to not destroy a whole block of dates and original historic house. They moved house to the pack and put up photos of history but allowed all the date tress to be bulldozed out... just heartbreaking.

It is utterly annoying how our children are fed the mantra of, "having to regenerate the planet to avoid climate disaster," but then make growing superfoods along keyline/cascading systems illegal.

It might be a nice idea to add layers to graze below the trees and have an income selling eggs while improving the soil and building pastures (holistic management)
Yes, great idea. Also after chipping, a grinder used to reduce the chips to sawdust for quicker compost. I find I can never have enough so I am always trying to find ways to compost quicker. Raw material is free or will be until people realize they are throwing away "gold". Activated biochar would be the final touch.

I freeze! I use them year round to make protein balls w dates nuts raisins and coconut and they are always delicious. Going to track Robert down to buy his… we organic garden in Woodland Hills = tree fruit grapes,greens, veg - but don’t grow dates. Thanks for the video very informative. We need to support our farmers.
That beautiful desert makes me want to go there, as I can't imagine there being too many allergens. If it wasn't for the ridiculous taxation in CA, I'd want to retire there and have a near 365-day per year growing season. No humidity is another great reason to live in the desert. Nashville is as moldy as the carpet on a boat dock.
Instead, Californians are moving to where I live in great numbers--7,500+ a year from SoCal to Nashville.
About dates, the best I ever had came from Israel. They were organic and were purchased at a store in the DC area along with the best tasting olive oil I have ever consumed.

$4 to $8 a pound is quite cheap compared to the price we pay in Australia, with local growers getting $35/kg through internet sales.

Hi ! So i live in Southwestern IL. I went to the market and bought some Dates in a package. Ingredients is just MEDJOOL DATES... they are SOooo sweet. Is that sugar natural? THey are delish. but Soo sweet. whew. Wish we could grow them here. NOt sure they would survive the winters.
so were selling our house next year ans so i just dug 75 holes in the back yard lawn and am growing like crazy, then b4 winter (minnesota home 20 miles south of minneapolis)

I prefer Flying Disc to China Ranch, as they better embrace a better style of regenerative and organic agriculture. China ranch, does bag their dates, but they use synthetic fertilizers and may use herbicides.

I LOVE YOU JOHN. But why do you insist that every type of rock dust has 72 trace minerals?! When you crush up a rock from a quarry, it contains those minerals. Azomite contains all 72 trace minerals because it is from an ancient lake / sea bed, I think? Please someone help, I'm not sure but it's been on my mind.

Would you please put some Nursary addresses who mail date plam tree to Miami? I called 20 Nursary, no one wants to mail. Nursary from Dubai wants to mail but I can’t get permission from Department of Agriculture. Any help to get some off shot plants is highly appreciated.
I'm in uae and I highly recommend the little circular dates, we call them lulu dates, and the red dates which is the trademark of a prominent farming region in UAE city of Al Ain. Those dates are like candy, you feel guilty eating them because their so sweet.
Other wonderful fruits we have in this region; is a type of lime that makes the most punch lemonade, excellent for pickling, and salads; sour frim mango which is so good it eaten with the firm skin; a type of almond that doesn't produce almond but the fruit is edible, it has a unique taste (best local fruit); a tree that's from the buckhorn tree family that makes fruit that's superior to apples and better than most fruits, it good green or rip. All this plants grow really well in stoney, desert, dry and hot environment. Also all those fruits are very unreasonably expensive and no one seems to have mastered harvesting them.

I wonder if a permaculture forest, on a sheltered (walled) plot in that valley could grow bananas, cocoa, coffee, and coconut? How would we know until it is tried by an expert who has imagination? A thick adobe wall would provide a heat sink in winter and they are cheap because your material is laying all around. It just takes the initial labor for rammed earth.
