Discovered this back in the MySpace days and the picture perfectly embodies how this song feels. Super ethereal and gives a sense of something off-world.
When, I first heard this song in 2011 I was dealing with loss at a young age. It’s so strange to hear something that moves me to tears after all this growth. It’s almost cathartic. I lost track of this song after some years and only recently thought of it and searched for it. Thank you for keeping this up here. Thank you for persevering this. It’s beautiful.
I've been coming back to listen to this for years now. My motivator is the same feeling you have when you miss an important person you almost were able to forget..
Thanks everyone for posting and supporting independent artists! Some "fun" facts about this video: I made it after buying the song on JB's site, which you should totally do. I paired Albrecht Schenck's painting "Anguish" with Transcend because waaay back in 2009, Jean had done this himself for the download of this song, and I thought it was tonally appropriate. Not that you care but it's far and away the most watched video I've ever been a part of. I don't know or talk to the man himself, I just found his genius and am happy to have shared it with you all. Keep listening and making your own music! If you love "Transcend," make something from within yourself that carries this feeling and make your mark. Peace
I use to practice playing my drums to this album. It was one of my favorite things to do. I even told Jean about it. He was surprised I could keep time, but I have crazy innate syncopation in that regard.
For those who don't know Jean is in a band called Nuclear Rabbit and they will be performing at the Fat Cat in Modesto, California on November 19th. If you are in the area you should check them out!
I've been addicted to this song for several years now. From the first time I heard it I've never forgotten it. It's very Jean, and quite beautiful. For those reading this and wondering, yes, it sounds as good or better live.
This song is just amazing. Been listening to it for 3 years now, never ceases to move me :') Also for those wondering: the painter is Albrecht Schenck as many said before. Title of painting is "Anguish." This guy is amazing at painting animals. Even Frank Frazetta (another awesome painter, look him up if you love art!) himself had one of his paintings, "Found" (another one with a lamb) in his house.
When I think of solo bass players, guys like Billy Sheehan/Victor Wooten come to mind. I have nothing against them, but this carries so much more weight to me. That painting, "Anguish" combined with this song makes one want to cry in some parts, and in others, a strong resolve to carry on. Thank you, Jean=)
For some reason I like playing this in my car just loud enough to drown out all the noise while cruising like 120mph down the highway late at night. It just feels really good for some reason. Everything comming and going so fast, nothing but the sound of this playing, seeing the city lights in the distance. Very soothing.
this is really relaxing and loads of feelingstuff in this lolz i love how the delay delays the notes to like the perfect amount of delays ahah i dont think any of this makes sence what im saying anyway i love this it gives me goose bumps
@dalton9931 It's kind of a depressing wake up call when you see that the most popular piece by an artist isn't his masterpiece, its the "Super Mario" theme
For some fun juxtaposition, I recommend checking out Jean's old band, Nuclear Rabbit. The amazing basswork, as to be expected, but completely contrasting music style. Incredibly dynamic musician.
@wookie95020 AAAH!!! Thank you!! If been wondering where this track reminded me of... Thanks for clearing it up and help reminding me I must play Diablo again!
Jean Baudin is epic. I haven't heard such rounded, full music made with a single bass guitar. (though must mention, a single 11-string bass guitar, haha)
i think every guitarist has a soft spot for sitting in there room and tripping out with sweet delay's but this is something else hey.. this is ultimate! must be so awsome to be able to control your rythm notes AS you play and go where ever you like without kind of pre recorded them and over lapping shit uhh so cool.. do you have a myspace or anything with more stuff?
What is the name of the album? I really want to get this album, no word can accurately describe how (for a lack of a better term) amazing this song is. This is some pretty powerful music 5/5!!!!!!!!!!!
@rhysalexanderstones He does, but he's only uploaded a few clips from his days in E:OS and of him playing the theme to Legend of Zelda. If you search "Element of Surprise Inspiration" you should be able to find it.
@christopher2step It only takes a grand total of 5 minutes to look Jean Baudin up on wikipedia and learn about Nuclear Rabbit, but most youtube users can't even focus on a 3 minute long video.

Years later the chills remain. Magical 😢

The painting was done by A.F.A. Schenck (Albrecht Schenck) in 1878.. It's titled: Anguish.
Nice, ill look it up
How can someone not like Jean Baudin?

For some reason I like playing this in my car just loud enough to drown out all the noise while cruising like 120mph down the highway late at night. It just feels really good for some reason. i really hate people who just characterize jean as "the guy who plays mario" without even listening to this beautiful master piece.

@rhysalexanderstones He does, but he's only uploaded a few clips from his days in E:OS and of him playing the theme to Legend of Zelda. If you search "Element of Surprise Inspiration" you should be able to find it.

This is actually transcending... the whole thought of it... giving a pity view in the landscape... so emotional, BUT IRONIC... AMAZING TRACK!
THIS is the JB that should be worshipped.
@Missrere1984 half my pedal board consists of delay pedals xD
@christopher2step It only takes a grand total of 5 minutes to look Jean Baudin up on wikipedia and learn about Nuclear Rabbit, but most youtube users can't even focus on a 3 minute long video.

"Anguish" by August Friedrich Albrecht Schenck.
