Ive seen country Boys show up with a squirrel guns and lose horribly every time at the trap range. Its a different discipline. I was that country boy with a squirrel gun at one time also.
A few years ago I went to a trap shooting place where we shot clay in different settings and sizes trying to simulate pigeons in a bush, rabbits or squirrels along the ground. DO they have a competition like that?
She mentioned a pair of glasses being "pretty dark" for the day. What would be ideal for the weather that day? It appears a few are wearing perhaps Vermillion..? I am looking at getting a Rx pair made and considering what would be the most versatile.
I would like to know what you went with because I can't see any detail shooting targets without my glasses. Im interested in getting prescription shooting glasses myself
I dont know, but i would guess its so they can put the gun lower on their shoulder to make it easier to handle the recoil, i allso notice some of them have higher stock so they still kan have their chin rest on the stock to keep the head on sight... but then again its just a guess, i have never shot or handled a shotgun before
It puts the butt of the shotgun deeper into the pocket of your shoulder, and allows you to keep your head more erect, keeping your muscles in your neck and eyes less fatigued
Trap shooting is very quick, as you have just seen, If you used a normal Sporting gun you would inevitably shoot over the Top of the clay because of the way that it flies, (curving away from you to the left or right or directly ahead ) By having a High Rib, this gives you the illusion that your lining up the Top of the Rib to the flight of the clay but you are in fact aiming below allowing the clay to curve into the shot, ( you will also notice that the Comb of the Gun is also raised to bring the eye line up to the bead at the end) This is similar to giving lead in sporting clays. Needles to say Trap guns aren't much use in Sporting because of the different trajectory of the clays, and vice versa. I personally find Trap shooting more difficult for me, so I shoot Sporting, but I do love having a go at it every once in a while. Hope that explains it a little.
Where in australia are you? I've found that there are a lot of clay target clubs not listed in the white pages or on the internet. After a little research I found there are 4 clubs within an hour of me and I'm sure there are more I don't know about. I just joined my closest club today, Westernport Field & Game on Phillip Island, but if you Google "Phillip Island gun club" or similar you'll struggle for info. Check with your nearest known club where your nearest actual club is.
Don’t know what you are talking about, do you. The ammo is 2 3/4 inch 12 gauge. The shot load is 7/8ths of an ounce of shot no larger than 7.5. The targets are faster (65 mph) than American Trap targets (40 mph)
Same,I shoot off my deck all the time,i have a set of targets set up off my deck at 100,200,and 300 yards. Including smaller pistol targets at 10 yards and every 5 yards up to 50.
well if you are talking about buying, all firearms need to be registered into your name (forget semi auto's aswell) and it takes about a week to process if it is quick, then you need to o fill out more paperwork and receive the firearm, oh and another thing guns are ALOT more expensive, a bad mosn 91/30 that would go for maybe $50 in the states is about 350 here the cheapest i've seen an ar-15 is 9,000
another thing you could try is ring a local gunshop/dealer (there is always a few in the yellow pages) and ask them about clay grounds and gun clubs, they will be happy to tell you as you may become a customer in the future.
but seriously - 24 hour turnaround here. Some states make you wait to get your permit. Here in Victoria your first gun is 28 days then 24-48 hours for each subsequent gun.
people who are bored by competition shooting, have you ever even shot a gun before? only gone to a range once in my life but thats all i need to appreciate greatly this sport.
neuvocastezero 1 As you look at the ribs, they all cant down from the shooter’s eyeline towards the muzzle. This causes the gun to pattern high (above the bead/rib). Since you’re always shooting a rising bird in trap, the high pattern lets you focus on the bird more clearly.

The high rail is a built-in lead for the target
Carol Meyer: not quite. The high rib determines the elevation of the shot, not the lead. Elevation is vertical as is the rib. Lead is horizontal.

Why reload before you move? Why not put your cartridges in once you are standing at your new position?
halfway through the video i glanced at the description and the first sentence spoiled the damn thing
why are sights so elevated? doesnt it skew the aiming ?
Makes it one of the most desirable place to live in on the planet, was there once and loved it!
Why is the vent rib so high on these competition guns.
They believe they get better visibility due to a higher head position.

Blowing the hot gasses out of the barrel keeps them cooler, avoiding heat waves coming off the barrel, especially in colder weather.
