    Dude you won't believe this but today I saw someone reply under a chainsaw man video stating that most of chainsaw man's first episode was CGI even the character acting and all lol. When someone else clarified that it was 2d and not CGI he said and I quote "Doesn't matter if it was 2d, if it looked like 3d then it was bad 2d animation to begin with."
    This just goes to show that these people will hate anything that MAPPA studios does at this point and it's hilarious.

      The problem is how jarring it is. It's distracting and takes me out of the actual anime.
      I never understood people saying "you can't even tell its cgi, it looks 2D!"
      Maybe for them, but I can EASILY tell when a character is cgi, even if it's switching between 2d and 3d as it goes. Only time it's not possible for me to tell is just when it's only for a frame or 2, because then it's just too fast for the human eye to catch in general.
      It's jarring because the movement immediately changes, along with detail and shadows to a cgi look, and it's a lot more smoothed over than 2D animation.
      In a vacuum of just anime vs other anime cgi, sure it's good cgi. Doesn't mean it's GOOD cgi.
      Good cgi is indistinguishable from non cgi unless it's intentionally made to look different.
      Good cgi is violet evergardens type writers. Or the backgrounds in many anime.
      The characters? Not so much. It's really noticeable still.
      For me, cgi is bad as long as I can notice it and go "that's cgi". If it flies under my radar then it's good cgi.
      Chainsaw man had some of the best anime cgi for characters ever. There's still a number of scenes I was disappointed in though because my brain went "that's cgi".
      It's still noticeable even in chainsaw man. It's just a lot better than other shows like aots cgi is all.

    I personally think CGI can look better than 2D if the studio isn't using it to cut corners for time constraints, nearly every Gundam anime has CG MECHS in it, and look amazing, something 2d was never able to achieve in the older Gundam shows, giving it that robotic polish look, (I do still like 2d MECHS but cg MECHS just look way better!)
    Ajin is still currently my most favorite full cg anime, and grateful they chose to go along that way!
    There's even an anime that managed to make crappy cg look like it couldn't have been done any other way and in a good way!..
    I'm talking about Kurokami...
    The only times I've disliked the choice of CGI was Berserk 2016-2017, (but looked fine in blu-ray) and Ex-Arm!

    I used to be one of those people who would go crazy hearing that the 20 second animation scene in a 2d anime I watched is CGI... After sometime, I realized that the animators are underpaid and many are literally dying. So after that, I started not hating CGI. It's not that x CGI's any easier, but since it doesn't need to be drawing every single frame, it make it a little faster to animate. Props to the animators suffering for us to get these gorgeous shows, most of whom get hate for something so small you might haven't even realized by yourself but someone else pointing it out.

  • @Dogflamingo
    @Dogflamingo ปีที่แล้ว

    Yo, you should just say characters instead of foreground because you could have a fully CG desk in the foreground and I don't think people would care.
    Also, it's namely characters moving that's the problem because when you animate characters in 2D they'll have inherent imperfections but 3D will always be perfect, unless you program it otherwise. Think about the way shading moves on a 3D character vs 2D (lines won't be consistent between frames). Some 3D stills are obviously 3D (4:25) but others look perfectly fine (5:36)

      They should use the cgi and 3d methods that arc system works does to their recent games. It's a mixture of both and to make every movement, jumping, and combat in the 3d environment like its a drawing, the illusion of 2d in a 3d space.

    • @Dogflamingo
      @Dogflamingo ปีที่แล้ว

      @@BeansLive567 Yeah, that would be the best case scenario but that takes a bunch of effort. Arc sys treats those 3D models as if they were 2D, reducing the frame rate and purposely adding imperfections. Really do wish we get a full CG anime one day that does go full force like Arc sys tho

    They use a lot of CGI to pump as much anime content as possible in the shortest amount of time.
    So they can make the most money in the shortest amount of time.
    For example look at something like the 26 episodes of EVA and something like the Ghost in the shell movie...and compare it with today's anime...nothing today looks better.
    Another thing I want to add...In the current season of anime...we have 68 anime.
    A lot of sh*t pumped...and a lot of people that cope with 3DCG.

    • @ProbablyPretentious
      @ProbablyPretentious  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I don't think that's correct, in the long term maybe, if they invest in a 3d model that can be used for the next 50 eps that may save money, but in the short term, cgi is the more expensive alternative, since cgi artists are paid more than traditional 2d animators. You're not wrong when you say that cgi Is used to pump out a lot of shows, however the reason why it's needed is because most shows don't have the schedule/time required to hand draw complicated designs for too many frames...

    Great video as always! I really want to say this however and I originally wanted to comment on MankoMan's video with the similar topic as you but decided not to because I'm not sure what I'm talking about regardless but here it is:
    I'm going to go through assumption but I have a feeling the reason why anime fans despise CGI is not only because of Berserk 2016, but also probably because how CGI were oversaturated in their daily lives given a lot of Western Animation especially movies uses a lot of CGIs. Anime happens to be the only medium that uses 2D or Hand-Drawn animations to this day and some people decided to gatekeep CGI because it'll ruin their experience and they didn't want anime getting oversaturated with CGI just like what happened in the West. That and you could argue that considering 2D or Hand-Drawn animation is kinda dying to a certain degree and how CGI tend to age poorly as time went by compared to 2D and Hand-Drawn animation... This probably contributes to a huge stigma against the CGI. Another thing that made a lot of anime fans scared of CGI is of course, the clunky movement and the uncanny valley that existed when using a CGI you could argue that Japanese CGI were still at its infancy compared to the west which is possible on why people perceive Japanese CGI isn't ready yet. But yeah, speaking of Japanese people not being ready yet, you could also say that people dislike CGI because it was used as a shortcut rather than enhance a product.
    Regardless, these are my assumption on why tons of people hate CGI in anime and still, great video nonetheless. And I just want to say that even Masao Maruyama, the former producer and founder of Madhouse and MAPPA, said that the blend of CGI and 2D can be the future of the anime and this is the reason why animes like Garo exists. Speaking of CGI, you should check any works by Naomi Iwata, it looks really great until now even if its on CGI.

I can essentially confirm that the stigma against CGI came to several things such as anime medium doesnt translate well to CGI because its deep rooted to 2D, have their adaptation lost in value when it comes to CGI, making the visuals dated as time went by compared to 2D animation which stood the test of time or the existence of CGI would make the 2D of anime extinct. These are the opinions of the people who commented on that Trigun Stampede MAL thread so yeah...
