  • The Marvellous Mrs. Maisel, a platform-defining programme for Prime Video, made its last bow with a series finale so significant that it had not one, not two, but three alternative endings. This is after five seasons, 43 episodes, six decades spent on screen, and innumerable chuckles.

    Why did you miss the last encounters between Midge and Susie? That is the relationship. Without Susie she would not have flourished. Her "career" would have ended on that drunken night being hauled off the stage.

      Because that scene was useless. All of the flash forwards were useless.

      @@unforgivenpuppet you totally missed the point. the flashforwards at first made you think "she's made it", but her making it was really the last flashforward. she got everything she wanted in the very end, and she did it on her terms, and she did it without having to sacrifice the closest relationship she's ever had, which is with Susie. I thought the flashforwards were pointless at first too, but then realized that they actually give you the confidence that Midge has a true happily ever after.

    • @unforgivenpuppet
      @unforgivenpuppet ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@jasonmcconnell3503 Naw dude watch it again. The flash forwards weren't some dream sequence or alternate outcome. She and Suzie still had a falling out and still got back together, because of Midge's apology at the Friar's Club. But all the flash forwards do is tell you her future after she becomes a star in the final episode. The story could have been told the same without any of the flash forwards, therefor they are pointless.

    • @unferrc
      @unferrc ปีที่แล้ว +21

      @@unforgivenpuppet I look at it differently. The flashforwards show she becomes a very successful standup but also expose her difficult relationships with her children, her lingering feelings for her ex, and how alone she is in her life like many comedians seem to end up. Her relationship with Susie (with it's problems) is the one constant.

      after she got hired and asked to be put on, and he told her no because of the rule, i screamed 'then quit!’. he basically says he would but the rule is the rule. its so dumb nobody thought of her to quit to get on the show. it also makes for a better story than asking for a favor 🙄

      Had he married Mei Lin (if she had not chosen her career over marriage), his life would have been very different. A new wife and new kid would have prevented him from getting in with the mob. Mei Lin choosing her career over him is also a very critical detail showing how times were drastically changing from women solely looking to be married to having a career but also the conundrum of picking either and not both (you could be fired if you get pregnant).
      All in all I think Joel’s life was beautifully written, he went from a self centered, spoiled, lost young man to a true man, courage, responsible, and honorable. Stories about his life was discussed by many people even famous one of how tough and smart of a guy he was. I’d say that’s very well deserving for him.

      @martidodger7106 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +20

      Joel got out of prison some time in the 90s, it’s mentioned in passing by one of the gossiping comics at Susie’s roast.
      There really isn’t much to Joel’s story after that, only that he and Midge loved each other but remained apart.
      We know that that Rose passed likely from cancer months after Midge insisted to keep her mom’s business going despite it being a failure as a gesture to show that she didn’t think her mom’s business was frivolous, which was a subtle through line between Midge and Rose over them butting heads over their respective careers.
      We know by the 80s, both parents are gone so it’s likely that after Midge’s failed wedding in Hawaii and sometime before Ethan’s daughter, Rose, is born that they passed. I know in some Jewish traditions, it is considered bad luck to name a child after a still living relative (the implication being is that you want the relative to die should you name a child after them while they are alive) so Rose had to have passed before 1985 when Joel was arrested at temple when we see Ethan, Chava, and their an infant Rose at temple.
      As for Abe, we didnt need to see what happened to him as his big character arc this season was him finally realizing how effed up gender roles/the patriarchy is and how it destroyed so many brilliant women’s potential to change the world. Him finally seeing Midge’s strength and how she is a trailblazer in her own right, admitting that Midge is supporting her parents to his colleagues/openly being so proud of Midge, seeing Ester’s genius and supporting his granddaughter’s talents is the arc.
      We know in the 80s while Ester is working ok her PhD that she and Abe were close as he is the only one she could talk to/understood her (she also picked up his frenetic energy and mannerisms.
      Honestly the actress killed it in mirroring both Midge and Abe’s mannerisms in that scene)
      So we can assume that Abe mentored his granddaughter until his passing, as his final pursuit since he was at such a cross-roads/restless with where he was in his 60s in 1961, and that it gave him happiness to do so

    I just wanted to see her career path and to end the season at her breakthrough act at Gordon show is so stupid, i wanna see how she went from there step- by-step, how she became famous and adapted to her new life as a famous comedian. These time jumps to her being old don’t tell us anything.

      Agreed I absolutely love this show but the time jumps were so bad in this season and truly made me feel depressed. I loved her set on the Gordon Ford show, that whole part of the episode is amazing but it just feels so lackluster otherwise. Not to mention she’s supposed to be like 75 or so in the last scene and looks older than my 94 year old aunt.. they did them dirty with the makeup. I’m so sad Joel got such a bad ending, I wanted them together again.

    I totally understand why they did what they did with the final season but I still don't love it. Season one and even season two and three were so charming and captivating because it was such a insular succinct story and world-you felt safe in this little world they created through the music and actors and characters and sets and costumes especially. Season four and five try to get too big and expansive which again I understand why-they were trying to build more into it and expand the story to the very end of Midges life, and explore some other themes and aspects of her life that weren't able to just be covered in the 1960s world and time frame. But honestly we didn't need it-it wasn't necessary; we would've been perfectly happy staying in the small world they created and just exploring and enjoying that place in space and who the character was in that time we didn't need to see the bitter or not bitter end. They also REALLY did us dirty by dropping Luke Kirby and Lenny Bruce almost entirely from the fifth season. They were so good together and the performances of them two on screen were so fun and so rich and so meaningful and we didn't get to see any of it or enjoy that! Again I understand that they felt Lenny Bruce served specific purpose and he wasn't really needed for that purpose in the same way in the fifth season but again we just wanted to enjoy the characters on screen we weren't asking for some great deep thing we just wanted to see them! Not only that but we got cheap replacement of Gordon ford-like who cares about him! His scene with midge were so meh! I DID love Carr and his rel with Susie-super cute.
    The fifth season was also like a Gilmore girls reunion in a way that didn't really make sense. For example they brought back Milo as handsome man completely pointlessly and a lot of the other "funny" bits they were including throughout the season seemed very forced and pointless (eg zeldas plot) again because we lost a cohesive arc and line for the whole story so it just felt like bits and pieces together. They were good bits and pieces with some good writing and good jokes and good feeling moments (Tony shaloubs restaurant speech) but it didn't all go together cohesively because they were trying to do too much.
    Also Midges character more broadly-and really Amy Sherman Palladinos writing-she seems to have these strong independent women but over and over the story progresses and the characters are lifted up both on this show and Gilmore girls by these magical men who fall in love with the leading ladies and basically do everything and give everything to them so it's like you're preaching independence yet there's always a man being the catalyst moving the plot forward. And this next point which mostly I like because I like living in a happy idealized world which is how ASP writes (except when it comes to the romantic relationships of her characters then it's all disaster and garbage over and over again-which is not what we want!), everyone always LOVES the main character. For example, I found it extremely unbelievable that male writing staff would be so quickly accepting and supportive of MM! So yeah while last season was solid and actually pretty good as far as endings go, I miss the MMM of season 1 And I miss Luke Kirby.

      Agreed. While there were some really incredible emotional moments sprinkled throughout, they were doing WAY too much with Season 5. I especially did not like the fast forward scenes. None of them worked for me. Also, Susie and Midge’s fight was just completely unnecessary in my opinion.

    • @jagrutitripathy3978
      @jagrutitripathy3978 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Also I didn’t understand why they ditched Benjamin (the doctor guy) completely.. i was expecting him until the end. His character was good . I found it totally pointless.

    • @marslander2488
      @marslander2488 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@jagrutitripathy3978 Secretly, there were a lot of plot points that ended up going nowhere… it’s like they had all of these ideas and not enough time to execute them due to the short seasons. I’ve noticed that’s a common problem with shows these days. I really miss how tv shows had much longer seasons before the streaming era. When the show was good, it allowed the relationships between the characters to really flesh out over time.

      I don't agree with you at all. I enjoyed the season and actually found the time jumps super interesting. Most shows just end on "happily ever after" and you're left wanting. Here they showed us everything, and I thought that was really fresh. Also that testi-roastial episode was fantastic. What a great way to show what happened to Susie, while simultaneously pushing the plot forward in the past with the Joel trading himself with the mob and Susie getting Goerge fired which ultimately is the catalyst for getting midge on the show. Very clever writing and I enjoyed it very much. I've rewatched the season again now and that episode is even better the second time round.
      But most of all what I disagree with you on is about how you say the men apparently do everything for midge's success??!? I don't understand where you got that from at all. Guess what, men not only existed in 1960, but they ran the world in 1960. You couldn't avoid them even if you tried, and this show, even though is stylised and "perfect seeming" is actually trying to be very realistic and grounded in reality. So much so that they even have real people from the 60s in the show i.e Lenny Bruce. Every single succes for midge comes either from herself, or from susie. Yes she has to open for men, yes she has to be on the men's shows to be seen on TV, yes men have to let her into their clubs. But that by no means it's the men who drive her success. Everything is gained by the hard work and brilliance of Susie and midge. They break the rules and go over the men's heads to get where they deserve to be. Even with getting on the show it was Hedy who made that happen, not Gordon. And the only man who actually matters, Joel, is actually playing the "stereotypical woman's role" by taking care of the kids and just supporting and sacrificing everything for midge's success. But he has done nothing to push her forward, he just supported her and allowed her to do what she needs to do. So I really don't understand where this "strong independent woman but she needs men to get anywhere in life" thing has come from?

    • @natterlie
      @natterlie ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I agree, there were waaaay to many side storylines that were unnecessary and made the pacing feel off at times. I also did not like that Lenny only had like 3 scenes this season, he was such an important part of Midge's career and then the last time she sees him is at this horrible gig and she doesn't even want to talk to him? I was convinced after season 4 that they would include Lenny's death or show famous Midge at Carnegie hall throwing it back to the emotional big moment they had there, but no. So weird.. Maybe Luke Kirby wasn't available or something lol
