Thank you so much for this! My green beans have been the most hearty, and everyone said to rip up all my Summer squash, even though they were still kicking it! Idk why so many people want to rip up perfectly good, producing plants, just because it is "time to". We live in Florida, man!
@sangitadesai7278 I bought some purple garlic at Walmart. Stuck it in the fridge for 3 months. Tops started sprouting, so I planted them. Just an experiment. But it seems like it should work.
I'm trying a African blood red colored beet this time. Supposed to be able to do really well with our quick heat so it's more heat tolerant. We love beets.
Been harvesting quite a bit of squash since Hurricane Milton. Varieties Green Griller (matures in 40 days) and white pattypan squash (surprisingly mine has grown super fast 50 days) putting out squash regularly; growing in plant bags. My Helios radishes are very happy growing nicely and plentiful. I’m also growing Southern Mustard greens, they’re out of control, hard to keep up with the growth. Been stir frying a lot of these. My cow horn peppers are going strong and loaded with peppers. My golden beets are depressing, just don’t want to grow. Great video, really enjoyed it. Thanks from Tampa Bay FL.
Sounds like you are having a great winter harvest! My beets have acted like that before and a little nitrogen pushed them through. Give it a shot and let me know if that works for you.
@@HomegrownFloridaZ9a Hi there, wanted to follow up with you regarding your suggestion for giving beet plants a bit more nitrogen. Well, like you experienced my beet plants are looking much better, 2 in fact are shaping/expanding nicely. Thank you very much your advice has been on point. - Dee Birdwell, zone 10A
If you prefer larger Kohlrabi that does well in the heat we still might have in our Fall and Winter (I am located in Florida Zone 10), you may want to try the giant Kohlrabi variety! In my experience, they got larger than the common varieties and not woody at all! The taste was great and texture crunchy. Last year, I left mine in ground all the way to end of May. It was still not woody! The taste and texture was not as good as I know it can be. Still ate it, it still tasted fine. But my soil tends to be drier than I want it to be. That could have affected it. If you try that variety, I hope you enjoy it as much as I do😄. PS... I am excited to see your Sikil Squash grow! Mine fought the green caterpillars, but lost to the hurricanes.
Hello. I’m in the Cape Coral area and growing black cherry tomatoes. So far they look great. 3 ft tall plants and about 10 to 15 have grown out from the flowers. They are growing against the south wall of our house to get as much sun as possible. I hope yours grow as well if not better.
Oh I'm so glad you loved the heirloom tomatoes seeds I sent you. I'm going to plant them again this year. I'm growing the French breakfast radishes they grow super fast and long. They are not to peppery tasting and they get milder tasting when you roast them with other vegetables. I started sweet banana peppers in October and some are ready to harvest. I'm trying a lot of cherry tomato varieties this winter. Happy winter gardening 😊
It got down to 23F last night, here in Sylacauga AL. So, how did my garden do? Okay, I recently harvested were Komatsuna, Tatsoi, Swiss Chard, Pak Choy, Yellow Heart Winter Choy, and turnips. The cold didn't phase my Swiss Chard, beets, carrots, parsnips, broccoli, cauliflower, or Meyers Lemon Tree. The Pak Choi took a bit of a beating, but is hanging in there. This is where things turn south. The Napa Cabbage (Experiment) is chicken food. I am going to replace it with All Seasons Cabbage (MIgardener). The red cabbage took it hard. I have two heads doing fantastic, three iffy, and one that is chicken food. Tonight, it is forecasted to drop to 23F again, so I'll have to wait and see how the garden takes the repeated freeze tomorrow after it warms up a bit, and the frost is gone. It is a good thing that I have chickens, hens, to make fertilizer for me, else the dying plants would be composted-fertilizer either way.
That’s a great attitude to have. Nothing wasted. I need to take a page from your book. Temps haven’t dropped that low for me yet so fingers crossed I can get a tomato harvest before it does
Looking forward to trying my first Kewalo tomato. You were right - the plant produces like crazy. It will be a little effort to protect it with our first couple of cold nights coming up this week but with ALL of the fruit on just one plant it should be so worth it.
I am located in Florida, Zone 10, and have never been able to get kale and other crops to go to seed. From my readings, some crops need cooler temperatures that I don't get in order to go to seed. And yes, the pests are awful! But, I can get Ethiopian Kale to go to seed. It's a relative to kale and mustard, if I remember correctly.😄
Ethiopian Kale (texel) is Brassica carinata which is an annual. Siberian kales are brassica napus, cold hardy and sweeter than other kales. Lacinato kale and collards are brassica oleracea (so are cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, Brussel sprouts and kohlrabi). Turnips, and Asian greens are Brassica rapa. Mustards are Brassica juncea (annual). Tree collards are usually perennial. Good to know this info when growing these crops together and saving seeds as all varieties within the same species can cross with each other. If you want to breed a new variety, plant similar crops near each other.
Im in zone 9 /10a and Ive had all my brassicas in since Sept. testing out 4 different broccoli varieties this year. So far green magic and gypsy are winning! Are you direct sowing now?
Love your videos! Question how would you recommend getting rid of ants in raised garden bed? I’m in south central Florida and red ants and bull ants are killing my gardens
I'm hoping the early cold snap doesn't take out my tomato and pepper plants. My winter crops are doing great so far, despite the hurricane set backs with my seedlings.
First of all….you can never have too many seeds!! Ok that was my only point to make here!😂
You’re absolutely right about that! 🤣
Yes

Exactly! If the plant wants to live, let it live.
I started potatoes and garlic today and yesterday. Jacksonville. Also started 3 types of tomato and some basil and spearmint inside.
Sounds like you’re off to a great start!
What kind of garlic do you plant in Jacksonville? I have been trying for the past 3 years but no luck so far.
Thank you

I found Arcadia seeds on Amazon in August. My plants are growing well! Hope they form heads soon! I'm in Tampa, 9b.
Arcadia seeds are great! Hope you get a good head off those!
I found some Arcadia seeds on Etsy.

Same here. I’d love to hear how they grow for you. Good luck
I'm a native Floridian & I just subbed. 😊
Welcome to the channel!
Im in west palm beach and the Ethiopian kale and dinosaur kale grow really quickly and doing great.
They do so well here! And they love growing this time of year. Great job

Thanks for the great info! I’ll definitely try that one. I am excited to see how my Sikil Squash does, too.
Hi! Never tried growing the Butter Cup Squash in winter gonna give it a try, just pray we don't get a freeze😊
Fingers crossed for no freeze!
I like turnips for the greens

I'm glad you're enjoying the Kewalo tomato! If you can keep them warm enough, you could have tomatoes all winter.
Kale is a biennial and is hard to set seed in FL due to the heat and bugs attacking the plant in the summer
That makes sense. For some reason I thought it was an annual.

Like in my zone 11b...No pests and less problems to grow but all grows slowly.
10b here, hoping to get some potatoes this year, last year was just too hot!
They do take a lot longer with the shorter days but having no pests and less disease is the best
It might be a good idea to have a seasonal seed case & leave the big case for longer term storage.
Great idea!
I have two containers for seeds, one for Spring/Summer and one for Fall/Winter.
Im in zone 9 /10a and Ive had all my brassicas in since Sept. testing out 4 different broccoli varieties this year. So far green magic and gypsy are winning! Are you direct sowing now?
I love testing new varieties too! I’ll probably do a new round of broccoli, cabbage, lettuce and carrots very soon.
Partytime from burpee over produced cucumbers for me. I live in orlando
Nice!!!
Where do you get the Chandler strawberries plants
I think I got those from BerriesUnlimited a few years ago. Etsy might have a good supply too.
Love your videos! Question how would you recommend getting rid of ants in raised garden bed? I’m in south central Florida and red ants and bull ants are killing my gardens
Diatomaceous earth might help. Helped me with regular brownish ants. (won't hurt plants either)
Which sugar snap peas did u have luck with here in St. Pete? ( hi neighbor 😊)
Also where can you get golden nugget potato slips?
I grow sugar daddy or sugar snap. For golden nugget potatoes, I order my seed potatoes from Grand Teton Organics. Good luck!
@ thank you
I'm hoping the early cold snap doesn't take out my tomato and pepper plants. My winter crops are doing great so far, despite the hurricane set backs with my seedlings.
Fingers crossed for you! Hope your tomato and pepper plants make it!
