    Hope everyone was spared any damage or injury from Idalia. We were traveling and were evacuated from the East Coast so came back to Tampa Bay. No worries as there is plenty to do at this time of year in the garden. Tomatoes, tomatoes, tomatoes. Made another rookie mistake and over planted my arugula, broccoli, lettuce before we went camping . They are looking great but prob should’ve spaced them out more, uo oh. Great video. Wood ash is another good additive to compost.
    I have issues in my garden with sun because my yard is wide open. I have my asparagus on the east side and fortunately have huge live oaks that shade the west. And I love the leaves they give me for composting I still have a center portion of that has a scorching spot that gives me problems. Im thinking about trying a sun shade of some type next year.
    I need to get my act together with fertilizer. I use way to little. But i do have lots of duck and chicken manure that i compost. I also have tumbler for house scraps that i tumble then add to my compost pile of leaves, chicken and duck poop and bedding. I also used the fall oak leaves in the compost piles.
    Love the finger water trick. Been using it for years. I dont get my nails done so ill stick to that😂. Getting soaked now from hurricane but didnt water anything last three days.
    Love your approach to pest. That is my goal. I run my meat chcikens through my garden in between planting. This help with weeds and bugs and also adds the poop. Basically, i turn my garden into a two month chicken run to grow out my meat chickens. That is my row garden. I do have tomatoes, pineapple, asparagus, and a raise bed that is off limits to my birds👍🏻
    You have a great set up. I hope more people in communities start making use of any available space.
    I like ugly veggies too. Actually i have a couple ugly chickens too. Ironically they are my favorites 😂.
    Thanks for video. I learn something every time or get a laugh here in there. Im a warrior in a garden. And I enjoy my new hobby of Gardening. It helps me dealing with things I experienced while in combat.

      Your garden sounds beautiful. I really want to try asparagus again. How is yours doing? I think gardening is one of the best hobbies/lifestyles. @@HomegrownFloridaZ9a asparagus is doing well. I over watered it a couple weeks ago. I left the sprinkler on accidentally. So I got some yellow in it. But new spears have appeared since so I think it will be ok.
      Fresh veggies are the best. I wouldn't say my garden is beautiful but it's like the ugly vegetable thing 😂. I do have a wild flower cover crop now over 3/4 of garden space with lots of yellow orange flowers and butterflies everywhere. My meat chickens are in brooder and will be moved into that space in a couple weeks. I also have the laying hens and ducks running through now. They love hiding in the flowers.
      I'm waiting a little longer before I plant fall veggies. Last year was a mess as I'm sure you know. Hot to cold back to hot.

    My house and our rv carport run east and west so my planting area is south of the house and north of the carport. So this time of yr my carport throws shad to the north and the house is full sun. And it's the opposite in the summer. Is there a difference in growing in the shadow compared to under shade like a tree, or canopy? Is the light level still good for sun loving veggies?

    • @HomegrownFloridaZ9a
      @HomegrownFloridaZ9a  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The shade from your carport would be the same as from a tree so you would want to grow more shade loving plants. Most green leafy vegetables can handle some shade.

    Do you ever use Diatimatius earth for bugs to your plants? I live in Tampa and trying to grow with my greenstalk. Also, I planted seeds in a seed container for the first time, I have it in the window in my office to get sun however, I am not sure if I am watering enough or too much. I had Hollyhock flowers sprouting and then they died. Am I supposed to keep the plastic cover on the seed container or leave it off? should I put the seed container outside or is instead by the window okay? should I put a light on the plants? so trying to learn.

    • @HomegrownFloridaZ9a
      @HomegrownFloridaZ9a  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have used it in the past but I don’t really use it anymore. I left nature do it’s thing for the most part. You want to leave the tray on top until they sprout and then take off once they come up. The window is fine to start but once they sprout, I would suggest putting them outside or under a grow light because a lot of seedlings need more light than what a window provides. As for watering, I water until the soil is dark in color then add more once it starts to dry out and lighten in color. I have a seed starting video that goes into a deep dive. There should be a playlist for it. Check it out.

    • @janicemoyer854
      @janicemoyer854 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They don’t need light until they sprout up. The humidity done is to keep them warm and allow for some water. Hard to help though not knowing your location or temps.

    At 28:00 min I was so sad 😿 bugs and insects are just like small animals. Just because they're small doesn't mean they don't feel pain or suffer 🥺 please consider how it would feel to be stuck to sticky tape to death, or to get sucked up into a machine 🥺 I'm new to gardening so I don't know the perfect solutions yet, I'm going to look into this more. But if you're reading this and you're more knowledgeable than me, please do the least amount of harm to the insects. Please catch and release them, move them to somewhere else. Please don't hurt the bugs 😿

    I know this isn’t what everyone wants to hear, but please do not promote Azure, as they are on extremely right wing radical social media and every dollar we give them, some part of it goes to support extreme politics. I know most people don’t pay attention to this, but if we don’t want our money to support extremists, we shouldn’t use Azure for anything.
