Wouldn't you want to find the most open choke that would throw a larger even pattern ?

not necessarily, as the shot goes out further, the spread becomes increasingly wider, creating less density, meaning higher chance of hitting the bird non lethally injuring the bird instead of instantly.

@@cwbr2d256 I am inspired by Warren Hicks videos. He shoots steel #2 and #3 loads through a Skt1 Trulock choke. Steel doesn't need a very tight choke as it doesn't deform like lead or bismuth would. He routinely kills 3 birds with 3 shots which makes a good case for more open choke. But he cautions to wait for the birds to get in range, and make sure the gun fits. Almost every video I've seen lately on choke selection with nontox shot seems to promote ultra tight patterns no matter short, med or long range. When in reality you should only need the full choke choke pattern at extended long distance. Filling a duck with 50 pellets at 25 yards doesn't make for very nice table fare. The 2 chokes of an O/U shotgun could solve the short range / long range pattern dilemma , but to each their own...

@@gadgethunter5732 yeah you are right, in my situation the only places close by are very pressured with smart birds, meaning you take further shots usually, so In many situations having atleast a modified if not a full is a good decision. It really depends on location, and I didn’t take that in mind.

Anyone who shoots any amount in the fall waterfowl season unless their filthy rich, can’t afford to shoot bismuth no matter how dense it patterns

I have no use for the Bismuth when I’m water swatting 90% of the birds!!
The FastSteel 2.0 is a water swatters dream at 20 yards.
