Why India Is Afraid Of Its History

  • Textbook sections about Mahatma Gandhi, the Mughal Empire and the theory of evolution were only some of those the Indian government has removed from students’ textbooks in 2023.
The recent deletions aren’t an isolated event. Rewriting history has been a major priority of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Hindu nationalist party - and the impacts have been felt way beyond textbooks.

Kartik! You have just proved yourself wrong. Had it not been taught how would you have known about the Gupta empire, Chola, Cheras!! It was always taught. You were sleeping 😴 then and now the WA university forwards have made you feel they were not taught.. This is called mind bending.. History as a subject is taught to General students from Class VI to X only. Everything from Ancient India to Mediaeval India to Modern India has to be taught to students of Age 11 to 16, including like you who were sleeping during History classes.. Just check the books - it was all taught.
To those who are interested in History it is taught in greater detail after X.

I'm a muslim and a history enthusiast, however i must say that I've studied the ncert history books and it is definitely over-focused on mughal empire and delhi sultanate, and eventhough i love to read about the mughals, there has to be enough representation of the other diverse empires that existed in india. So if they remove part of mughal history and replace it with ahoms or cholas, then although i might feel slightly upset (due to the political aspect) as a muslim, as a history enthusiast I'll be happy that other empires are finally getting representation.

The main issue is that large parts of the history in Indian school books is based on the false propaganda stories of the British. Nobody says that the Mughal history should be erased but there is no need to go into great detail about every Mughal king considering the fact that the Mughals most of the time only ruled large parts of North India. This is why a chapter was reduced. If you have to go to this detail regarding Mughal history then you also have to include more chapters about the great Chola, Chalukya, Vijayanagar and Maratha Empires.

Students in india already have to study 4 books for their Social Science exams (History part 1, History part 2, Civics/Political Science, Economics). It's just too inhumane to make them study so much for one exam. I personally didn't like it during my school days. I found it very difficult to balance with other subjects like Science (Again, divided into Biology, chemistry, and physics), Mathematics, Computer Science, Physical Education, Language 1 (English), Language 2 (Mostly Hindi), Language 3 (Sanskrit/Regional language like Kannada, etc.)
Students are made to study so much and an awful lot of it turns out to be useless. They just use route learning and pass the exam, and then forget everything. Therefore, the syllabus must be reduced.
Reducing science and maths is actually bad, because the topics in those books are important and already very concise.
Reducing language content is also bad because it might render students with less knowledge about either English (which is the very reason for the IT boom in India), or their mother tongue (which will cause a big trouble with all the state governments. People would bycott central government schools and join state government schools which teach primarily in regional language).
Reducing physical education/computer science is not possible because they already have so little time. Students hardly get time to play. There's about one PE class a week!
That only leaves us with Social Science. Of the 3 sub divisions; History, Political Science, Economics... History has 2 books! So it makes sense to remove some content from history. Now, what can we remove from history, the one paragraph about the Chola Empire, or one of the many chapters about the Mughals?
I generally do not like the moves by our government, but this is indeed a thoughtful one. It deserves appreciations. The media will definitely portray it as anti Muslim, but it is not. Muslims in India are not Mughals! There is a whole chapter about the Delhi Sultanate (who were Muslim conquerors) which isn't removed. Going by the logic of this video, that Delhi Sultanate chapter should have been removed. But it wasn't, thus proving this video wrong.
If UK can get away by not teaching students about their Colonial atrocities, why can't India reduce the number of chapters dedicated to Mughals in school textbooks? The Mughal dynasty had a series of chapters completely dedicated to them, their architecture, etc. On the other hand other great empires like Cholas had just one paragraph! That's unacceptable. Clearly, that book was biased towards the Mughals. This could have been done due to various political reasons, but it needs to stop now as it is no longer needed.

@@momrazuddin381Students in india already have to study 4 books for their Social Science exams (History part 1, History part 2, Civics/Political Science, Economics).

Ok, so a couple of things that this video doesn't mention! Majority of the history text books in the past only spoke about Islamic Rulers and rarely spoke about the empires/kingdoms of India. And the government wants to balance that, because india goes further back that the Abrahamic religions. But another thing they are trying to do is raise the confidence of Indians to say tht they are more that what their rulesr defined them (i.e British and Mughals). But I do think they have to show the good and the bad!
In terms of street names, many of the places with Muslim names have had a (not Hindu) but Sanskrit names and they want to change it back to originality. The government is definitely exagurrating the history, it is not against muslims but to raise national pride based on the past to push the nation forward.
And it is annoying they are removing that Ghandi's assasination story. There are pluses and downsided to what is going on with history text books, but not everything is about muslims (AJ+). I hope you cover all aspects of what is going on.

Why is ncert so focussed on teaching colonial history wether it be under the Mughals or the British? It's Indian history, shouldn't be about the history of the Indian people and not about the history of invaders? France was invaded and ruled for as many years by the British, the French don't focus their history and their identities on the Hundred Years war. It's called having a set of leaders who believe that their nation's history is a story worth telling.
Postcolonialism and forced Islamization of the culture through violence cannot be the key part of our identities anymore. We're not British and we're not Mughals. We're not Europeans and we're not Central Asians either. We're Indians. Those people were not from here. We have to teach the history of our people to our kids, let them teach their children theirs.

No one is erasing anything. You can still learn them in higher studies. They just reduce the weightage of medieval history ( mostly about muslim invaders and British occupation) from school curriculum and adding ancient and classical history which was not taught much before. Also medieval history is also very hectic so reducing its weightage is not wrong. There was a lot of unnecessary information before. If someone reads Indian school NCERT books they would know what I am saying.

    • @ariapinandita9240

That's okay. Aji Saka/Ajivaka history from Kali Serayu (the ancestor of Sundanese-Javanese), the fall of the Saka dynasty, and Sriwijaya-Cholamandala war were also removed from their history book.
That's why, Indonesian and Indian history are very different.
Our history book tell us that our ancestors (Saka-Yavana/Sunda-Java, Malaya-Kamboja-Champa/Malay moved to Yunan/Mekong-Irrawaddy river after the fall of Saka dynasty.
And tell us that Sriwijaya-Cholamandala is the reason why the relation between Southeast Asia and Nepal halted for several centuries. That's why we moved the center of agama Siwa-Buddha from India to Borobudur and Mount Semeru/Mahameru in Java.
Of course they want to remove this dark history from their book. That's the reason why the word 'Sanatan Dharma', not well known in Indonesia.
Indonesia is more familiar with the word tirta religion/agama tirta from the story of Purwacarita. Yes, with Aji Saka/Ajivaka as a unifying figure. Because he introduced:
      1. Agama tirta (Kapitayan, Kejawen, Sunda Wiwitan religion)
      2. The Saka calendar (still used by the Muslim Javanese and Balinese Hindus)
      3. Aksara Aji Saka/aksara Hanacaraka/Javanese script
This is why there is no Saka Year commemoration in India as in Bali, Indonesia (Nyepi). To remember the role of Aji Saka/Ajivaka, Kali Serayu (birthplace of Aji Saka/Ajivaka) was made the name of one of the rivers in Central Java. This history is erased from India textbooks and that's okay since we have our own version.

The change of Urdu/Muslim names to Hindu-sounding (Sanskrit-derived?) ones reminds me of South Africa. In South Africa, several Afrikaans locations have been given new names in native “black” languages. Ditto in Canada, some street names and other locations have been given Indigenous names, especially if the original names are seen as having colonial overtones. It’s fine in places like those but when something similar is done against Muslim names in India, suddenly it’s bad?

    • @AppleCinnamonPie
      @AppleCinnamonPie 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +33

You are comparing two very different things and calling them equivalent. This is false equivalence.
In Canada, the names of locations being English erases the fact that this land was originally indigenous. English names is a sign of colonialism. When an English name is changed to an Indigenous name, we are trying to be honest to our history that Canada was a colonial nation. Canada in the past did what India is doing now, erasing local culture, and putting different names instead. Canada is trying to fix its mistake, India is actually making this mistake.
It's not bad because it's against Muslim names, it's bad because it's erasing the local population's history and culture. How would you feel if the British returned to colonize India, and renamed all of your cities to English names? Would you be okay if New Delhi was renamed to St. John?

I'm sorry but, seeing this video as a Dutch History and Science enthusiast is very surprising. The video seems to be very biased with hidden implications at almost every sentence. I liked AJ but I'm seriously starting to doubt the truthfulness since in the first 40 seconds the amount of fallacies and assumptions is, quite frankly, astonishing. You start with a nice introduction to appeal to the viewers emotion, a Misleading Vividness, than you oversimplify the situation, not mentioning the reasons given for the removal of the chapter and than imply a conclusion with ad hominem fallacy, by assuming it's all because of Hindu nationalism.
Journalists should never assume, only state facts. But this factual information with a bunch of loaded words which lead to biased implied conclusion.

Students in india already have to study 4 books for their Social Science exams (History part 1, History part 2, Civics/Political Science, Economics). Its just too inhumane to make them study so much for one exam.
Students are made to study so much and a awful lot of it turns out to be useless.
Reducing physical education/computer science is not possible because they already hqve so less time. Students hardly get time to play. Theres about one PE class a week!
That only leaves us with Social Science. Of the 3 sub divisions; History, Political Science, Economic... History has 2 books! So it makes sene to remove some content from history. Now, what can we remove from history, the one paragraph about Chola Empire, or one of the many chapters about the Mughals?
This is why I laugh when people are worried about the transformational impacts of AI and other advanced technologies: the world has had the internet for 30 years, and we (humans) still fight the same ridiculous ethnic and religious battles as that of our ancestors. From India, to the Middle East, to Europe, and America - people, if think, will never truly change. New iPhone, same ideology.

Fair, but the rise of AI in the wrong hands makes things worse. AI, like the internet before it, is just a tool. A tool that humanity will take time to best utilize. But till it does, it provides unruly elements a tool to create a narrative of hate, create fake stories to support that narrative, and a way to spread it to the far corners of the world.
It will be a dark comedy to watch World War 3 start because a teenager in his bedroom made a deepfake.
