Thank you for this tutorial! I have used it many times in the past month on the Baker Street bag. I hope you get $$ from the number of times I watch your tutorials!
Agree with all the other comments. Best and easiest zipper installation video by far. I watched many and your video made adding a zipper so easy and simple compare to videos.
so glad I found this video. I have been making Tote bags and really wanted to do a zipper pocket. I've made plenty of bags with zippers but not pockets with zippers. I couldn't work out how to do that. This method looks great. Well explained without going over the same thing too many times.
OMG!!! I was so scared of the zipper pocket thing. This tutorial is beyond excellent. Thank you so much for explaining and documenting so clearly and thoroughly!
Thank you for such an excellent tutorial. Especially like the camera angle. I can see exactly how you do it. I learn better with a video than I do with just with pictures.
Thanks Sara was this super useful demo. Iam always tensed up when sewing a zipper to a fabric and then fixing the runner onto it, as I have not mastered this technique quite well !! I will try your method now!!
❤it’s been a while since I’ve done a lining pocket so I wanted a refresher, but now I’m throwing out my whole technique! Great tips, especially for the zipper, thanks so much!
I love your tutorials. You are very clear with your instructions. I use 1/8 inch Collins basting tape so that the tape glue never pokes out. Thanks so much for all of your great ideas!
Thank you so much for your excellent tutorial. After all my years of sewing I am still not confident with zippers, so have avoided them in my bags. But, your tutorial helps alot, I can work along with it.
I don't know if you''ll answer this question as it's been over 3 years since you posted this video BUT I'm curious as to why you measure down 6 and a quarter inches down. I'm trying to conquer putting a zip in the outside of a bag and yours is the best tutorial so thank you for sharing your wisdom. Eva UK
Think it's just a different method bringing same results.. it'll be easier to close pocket in my opinion.. still working through the process though.. let you know 😘
Great tutorial!!! I've been sewing on & off for years but just some basic stuff. I'm getting into it more (craft business) & having to learn some new things, which is always welcome. I just finished putting the zipper in (1st time adding a zippered pocket to a lining of a purse) & it turned out great! Ty
This is so amazing!!!! I am a full-on beginner, and never knew of WONDER TAPE! You have explained the usage superbly! I feel that now I can tackle a few bags. Thank you so much for sharing!
Great tutorial. I like how you put the fold at the top. When I’ve made them before I had the seam at the top and it’s difficult to sew with the zipper so close.
I would like to say a big Thank You 😘. I'm always afraid of sewing zippers!! I have seen a few tutorials but yours makes a deeper pocket. I followed your tutorial today and voila! A zipper pocket made!
Amazing tutorial very clear for a newbie like me . I also tried your method of zipper tabs n sewing each part separates the lining n the outer fabric ty so neat and cute
This video is waaaaay easier to understand than the last big TH-camr I watched. Thanks! Question though - isn't your zipper going to hit the stitch/fabric to stop instead of a zipper stop? Would this not degrade the fabric over time?
Excellent tutorial, thank you so much you made it look so easy and now I have tried and it worked out perfectly with your instructions 😄😄 thank you again 🙏🙏
Hello, I am enjoying watching your video just now and I am impressed by your sewing machine and would love to know what make it is would you be aloud to tell us. Thank you once more for the instructions.
Found this video after trying other methods I've seen. I like this method, but how do you determine what your measurements are? First is 12 inches and you mark at 6 and a quarter then half inch. But then, 20 inches and you mark 10 and a half inches then half inch. Why?
Excellent tutorial. Love your fabric choices. I also love freedom from the tyranny of the zipper size. Is there a particular iron you recommend? Thanks!
Hi Sara. Luv your tutorials and patterns! I’ve come across a project you may have time for in one of your Sewcial Sunday episodes! I’m confident now on how to sew zippers into my totes; but can’t find any tutorials on how to sew a front zipper pocket “diagonally” in a tote/purse pattern? Can you help please! Thank you! 🤗
all directional prints will end up half up half down when the are folded like this. If it's something that will bother you you will have to cut the fabric and reattach it so you have both sides going the direction you want. Remember to add about 1 cm to incorporate that change 😊
The lining was always facing the correct way. Do you mean the fabric used for the liner pocket? Any time you fold fabric with a directional print one side will face upand the other down ( remember we are talking the direction the print runs, not the inner or outer sides of the fabric. Because it is just a little zipper pocket being sewn into the lining of the inside of a purse, it would never be noticed enough for it to ever be a problem, but it if is annoying for you you can just cut a little extra fabric ( to allow for the seam allowance and fussy cutting if needed ) and join the 2 pieces together in the direction you want them in before starting the tutorial. Otherwise choose a solid, checkered, polka dotted etc fabric where it will look the same done this way. I hope this helps 😊. This is a really great tutorial but I think it assumes viewers already know how to construct purses, bags, etc and this lesson focused just on putting this little pocket in before you get started on the main construction. 💜
Great tutorial. Can you show us how you sew a zipper on the top of a bag that has a drop-in lining? This would be so helpful as I’m making my niece a bag and would like to do the zipper this way without having to add side panels to the zipper. Thanks SEW much! Have a great day!
Great tutorial and I love the sound of your machine. It's not the clanging sound of some sewing machines, it's the sound of a quality machine. I'm home. What machine do you use?
I’ve never seen a pocket done this way. I’m new to sewing so maybe that’s why lol. It’s a beautiful pocket! I also really love this fabric! Do you know where you got it? Or who it’s by?
Sarah if using different size pockets is there a formula that indicates the place where the zip sits. For example on this one you have placed the line at 10 1/2 inches?
It's a directional print that was folded so one side is always going to be upside down when using this method. Because it is just a little zipper pocket being sewn into the lining of the inside of a purse, it would never be noticed enough for it to ever be a problem, but it if is annoying for you you can just cut a little extra fabric to allow for the seam allowance and join the 2 pieces together in the direction you want them in before starting the tutorial. Otherwise choose a solid, checkered, polka dotted etc fabric where it won't matter. 😊
Which sewing machine are you using? It has a great, smooth, solid sound.......Ah ok I just saw you answered this already, wonder why I never heard of these machines and I live in UK lol. What do you think of it?
Vio Law thank you! I can't wait to make your bags. Your tutorials are super clear and help me feel confident that I'll be successful. I love how crisp the FriXion pen lines are in the video and so far I haven't liked using chalk on the wrong side of fabric. I'm a beginner and even the colored chalk seems to disappear into the wrong side. Thanks again for the videos and tips! Xox
Thank you so much for a superb tutorial on adding a zipper pocket to any bag. It is so helpful!
I return to this tutorial over and over! Thanks again.
Thank you for this tutorial! I have used it many times in the past month on the Baker Street bag. I hope you get $$ from the number of times I watch your tutorials!

This video is my go too for my zipper pocket construction. Love this. Thanks.
Best tutorial I have seen on zipper insertion. Well done.
You did a really good job showing and explaining how put in a zipper pocket. Thanks so much!
Agree with all the other comments. Best and easiest zipper installation video by far. I watched many and your video made adding a zipper so easy and simple compare to videos.
The best zipper installation video I have seen yet!!!! Thank you!
so glad I found this video. I have been making Tote bags and really wanted to do a zipper pocket. I've made plenty of bags with zippers but not pockets with zippers. I couldn't work out how to do that. This method looks great. Well explained without going over the same thing too many times.

Just added my first interior zipper pocket to a bag that didn’t call for it. Thanks so much for the perfectly clear instructions!
Thank you for such an excellent tutorial. Especially like the camera angle. I can see exactly how you do it. I learn better with a video than I do with just with pictures.
Wonderful! Very easy to understand. Thank you for taking the time to explain it!
Thanks Sara was this super useful demo.
Iam always tensed up when sewing a zipper to a fabric and then fixing the runner onto it, as I have not mastered this technique quite well !!
I will try your method now!!
thank you for using bright colored fabric!!! Makes it much easier to tell which way the fabric should be facing
Thank you so much for this video. It's been a very long time since I have done much sewing where a zip needs to be installed.
❤it’s been a while since I’ve done a lining pocket so I wanted a refresher, but now I’m throwing out my whole technique! Great tips, especially for the zipper, thanks so much!

I think it's for the seam allowance??
Thankyou so much for showing such an easy zipper pocket video

Hello,
I am enjoying watching your video just now and I am impressed by your sewing machine and would love to know what make it is would you be aloud to tell us. Thank you once more for the instructions.

Thanks Sarah!
I love the Octopus fabric, where can I buy it, please?
Lovely clear instructions. Thank you.
Wonderfully done as usual -- I finally ordered some wonder tape! So much easier than pins when doing this!
Found this video after trying other methods I've seen. I like this method, but how do you determine what your measurements are? First is 12 inches and you mark at 6 and a quarter then half inch. But then, 20 inches and you mark 10 and a half inches then half inch. Why?
Fantastic tutorial. Thankyou 🌷
Excellent tutorial. Love your fabric choices. I also love freedom from the tyranny of the zipper size. Is there a particular iron you recommend? Thanks!
Sara uses the Singer expert finish.
Any advice on how to deal with the directional fabric appearing upside down in the pocket?
Hi Sara. Luv your tutorials and patterns! I’ve come across a project you may have time for in one of your Sewcial Sunday episodes! Bronwyn Carr thank you!
VERY GOOD VIDEO----YOU REALLY EXPLAIN IT VERY WELL---I'M GONNA TRY IT!!! THANKS
oh wow those are some HEAVY DUTY scissors :D
Great tutorial. Thanks
Can you do this on the outside if you’ve used fusible batting on the outside fabric or is batting too thick?
Fabulous!
does this method only work for a size 3 zipper? are the measurements the same for size 5 zipper?
Should the pocket fabric be marked upside down? if you look into the pocket now, the fish will be the wrong way 'round
all directional prints will end up half up half down when the are folded like this. If it's something that will bother you you will have to cut the fabric and reattach it so you have both sides going the direction you want. Remember to add about 1 cm to incorporate that change 😊
I love the cloth you demonstrate and press on. Is it a proprietary brand?
You should amend to explain how the lining was upside down so the top should be the bottom
The lining was always facing the correct way. Do you mean the fabric used for the liner pocket? Any time you fold fabric with a directional print one side will face upand the other down ( remember we are talking the direction the print runs, not the inner or outer sides of the fabric. Sara Lawson Thank you SEW much Sara. I enjoy your videos. I learn a lot from them. Keep up the great work! Hugs!💝
They are Tokyo Milk fabric :)
Sarah if using different size pockets is there a formula that indicates the place where the zip sits. For example on this one you have placed the line at 10 1/2 inches?
What machine are you using...it's so quiet!
Ty so much for the video
I have hem tape.. is that okay? Seems to be similar...
I find that if you have to use pins to hold zipper in place, just remove each as you near them and readjust and the wavy is no longer an issue 🙃
rmemb to put th fabric upside down so it is right side up when done
It's a directional print that was folded so one side is always going to be upside down when using this method. Because it is just a little zipper pocket being sewn into the lining of the inside of a purse, it would never be noticed enough for it to ever be a problem, but it if is annoying for you you can just cut a little extra fabric to allow for the seam allowance and join the 2 pieces together in the direction you want them in before starting the tutorial. Otherwise choose a solid, checkered, polka dotted etc fabric where it won't matter. 😊
I was able to add a zipper pocket to a Lesportsac bag. Thank you.
Hi Sara, is this the same way I would add a zipper pocket to the front of a bag e.g I'm making the baker street bag will this method work ?
Which sewing machine are you using? It has a great, smooth, solid sound.......Ah ok I just saw you answered this already, wonder why I never heard of these machines and I live in UK lol. What do you think of it?
And the measurements of the molds?
Do you use the FriXion gel pen? Does the ink wash off well?
Vio Law thank you! I can't wait to make your bags. Your tutorials are super clear and help me feel confident that I'll be successful. I love how crisp the FriXion pen lines are in the video and so far I haven't liked using chalk on the wrong side of fabric.
