Hidden gems were the reason Blockbuster had such an appeal to me, I miss those trips to see if you got scammed or began a new life long love, for me my hidden gem was Dragon Age Origins, which I had heard nothing about back then.

Yupp when you found out as a kid if your weekend would be filled with an awesome game or be stuck with something like Duke Nukem Forever lol

I agree, I'm glad I'm not alone in missing the days where I wasn't googling upcoming games, seeing constant trailers, ratings, let's-plays, etc. Just going to the rental store and browsing the newer release section, making a decision based on the artwork and description and whether it's made by a developer I've enjoyed previously, and like you said: It was always sort of an exciting gamble, sometimes you'd get one you just didn't like but a lot of times, you made a discovery, you found this new amazing game that you'll likely end up purchasing after your rental period

Completely agree with you guys. Even though it's not a hidden gem, I knew nothing about final fantasy when I rented 8 on a whim, and it turned into a lifelong love with final fantasy, probably my joint favourite series with MGS

I do very much miss the novelty of the movie store. There's something about an instant access, constantly connected world that takes the magic out of things. That little extra effort of driving to the store and spending money on a game sight unseen, somehow makes it more enjoyable and easier to appreciate. It's a strange paradox of progress and convenience that, after a certain threshold, the benefits become harder to discern.

Yes, Edith Finch was a great experience. So many elements cleverly weaved together to tell the legacy of her family. I enjoyed playing each segment, but dreaded the end of each because I knew they would end in tears.

I'm so glad to see the love for the music! It's one of my favourite soundtracks of all time (I'd argue that it's the most underrated video game score of all time), and the fact that it wasn't nominated for any awards blows my mind

"GRIS" (the prononciation is "Gree"), is indeed the French word for "Grey".
For instance, the watercolor paint "Payne's Grey" is "Gris de Payne" in French.

The game I'd like to nominate for this subject is a turn based JRPG called 'The Cruel King and The Great Hero'. It is such an adorable game with a great art style. You play as an adorable orphaned little girl named Yuu that wants to become a great hero like her father that passed away. She is being looked after by a dragon king that steadily teaches her about life and guide her along her path to becoming a hero. The story starts to get more serious and emotional later on when the plot starts unraveling. It actually made me cry towards the end 🥲

My hidden gem list ... Arcade Paradise, Thymesia, Tinykin, any Llamasoft game and Salt and Sanctuary

  • @Grey_Warden_Invasion

The Vita was really good for hidden gems. Because of its smaller online store I was actually able to look through the games and find some that I else would never have found out about. If I had tried to look through the PS3 or PS4 store it probably would have taken me months to get through all the games so I never even tried. I probably would have never started the Trails of Cold Steel series, which is one of my most favourite series of all time, if it wasn't for the Vita, I've found Demetrios, Bastion, Child of Light, a bunch of Lego games and visual novels.
A hidden gem on the big consoles was Brütal Legend on the PS3. I just happened to come across a used copy, wasn't even sure if I should buy it at first because it didn't look all that appealing but the metal soundtrack of the description then convinced me after all and I actually really enjoyed playing it.

22:17 YES!!!! I’m currently playing it now! Trying to tough out Kaycee’s Mod now, but I could not put it down whenever I play it! This is such a great game to play!
If you’re a fan or are somewhat familiar with Magic the Gathering’s gameplay (Power/Toughness, abilities like Deathtouch, Flying, Reach, etc.) - you’re gonna have a great time!

I've fallen hard for the old Infinity Engine games since they've come to console. Playing Baldur's Gate and Baldur's Gate 2 on gamepad has been great. (Not v. obscure, but it doesn't get discussed as a console game much). Having those, plus so many of the more recent CRPG classics like Shadowrun, Pillars, Wasteland and Divinity, playable from the sofa. That's me sorted, there.

I'm with Rob on RiME too. Brilliant game with an ending which will stay with me forever. I was in bits! As for a hidden gem, I would have to say Supraland - a fantastic first-person, 3D Metroid-vania adventure with some very inventive puzzles and a lot of fun easter eggs to find.

No one ever reads the comments so I doubt anyone will read this, but if anyone does I think it’s worth pointing out that two of games they mentioned, and several they didn’t but that are amazing, are actually published by Annapurna Games. I realize they don’t create the games or develop them, they just publish them… still this is an impressive list. They mentioned What Remains of Edith Finch as well as Kentucky Route Zero, but the list goes on:
    Stray
    Journey
    Outer Wilds
    Twelve Minutes
    Gone Home
    Flower
    The Unfinished Swan
    Neon White
    Maquette
    Ashen
    The Artful Escape
I didn’t include all of them, but those are some amazing hidden gems in there.

My hidden gem: Ghost of a tale (cute looking game starring a mouse protagonist in a world that play similary to dark souls (not difficulty wise, but unlocking map wise. Hidden gem for me goes way back to the Ps1 days: Lunar 1 and Lunar 2. To this day, whenever people talk about the best RPGs on the original Playstation, I never hear anyone bring these up. Lunar 1 has had several remakes for handheld consoles, with mixed results, but Lunar 2 never really got that same love.

I just finished 'The Gardens Between' before I listened to this episode and when the topic was revealed I immediately paused and thought about what I would recommend, just to be pleasantly surprised by your guest's choice. 😊
I looked up all the other games as well and will definitely give some of them a try.
My other recommendations for hidden gems: OBSERVER:SYSTEM REDUX (from Bloober team so a little creepy/scary but great story & mechanics), 'TANDEM: A TALE OF SHADOWS' (it's a sweet puzzle game with awesome mechanics) & 'THE TURING TEST' ( puzzle game)

  • @dacollbns6336

Toma Runner (its japanese) is the hidden gem for me in PS1, I cannot stop playing it back then because the gameplay loop is so satisfying. It have nothing much to do, just racing games but without vehicle, but the set up and stages are great and many hidden path could be find. Other one close nowadays for me at least is Attack on Titan games, the nape slashing action and traversal is so fun and made me unable to stop playing...

#PodSquad Got to agree with Rosie about 'Pode', it's a very cozy game, especially if you are playing couch co-op. My dad and I spend time together on Friday s either watching Star Trek or playing games. The last game we played was Pode and it was definitely a team building exercise in communication. Mainly how it would down was this:
Me: *Explains how do to puzzle.*
Us: *Attempt & fail to do puzzle.*
    Me: *Re-explains what to do.*
    Dad: That's what I'm doing.
    Me: Oh, maybe I'm wrong.
Us: Spend twenty minutes figuring out another way to do puzzle.
Me: *Realises Dad wasn't doing what he'd insisted he was doing and that my first idea was correct after all.
BTW, for other cozy games, I would highly recommend two environmental puzzle platformers called 'Hoa' and 'Seasons After Fall'. They have a beautiful art aesthetic and emotive musical storytelling.

I thought Inscription was great - it stole my Christmas day last year. I thoroughly enjoyed the card battling, but I did think it got a bit too clever for its own good at times. I had to look up how to proceed a couple of times. Hugely inventive game though. My own personal hidden gem is "Spirit of the North". It's a slightly janky experience with bad controls but it's a beautiful game where you play as an arctic fox discovering the reason for the demise of an ancient civilisation. The ending was totally heart warming and slightly sad and I loved it.

2 of my hidden gems on PlayStation 2 are Shadow of Rome and Ejay Clubworld. I poured hours into both, more than Tekken 4 and 5, and anything I owned for PS2 really.

This is driving me crazy... Any PS1 experts here? I remember a (I'm pretty sure) PS1 game that I never played but it always sounded very interesting. I think Rob might have talked about it once. The I way I remember the review I read about it, there was a sort of crystal (I think it was a crystal) that slowly rotates its gaze in a 360 degrees circle over the level. It was on a platform. You have to stay out of its gaze. I don't think you could move as in walk around. I think there were other platforms with other crystals that you could take over. So you started low and had to reach higher platforms by taking over the crystals (I think they were crystals). And from that platform get to a higher platform. The end goal of a level was getting higher than the "main" crystal without being in its gaze. I feel like I remember a screenshot with a lot of red and yellow? And I think it was called something like The Guardian or The Watcher or The Overseer.... Something along those lines (don't think its any of those three). Does it ring any bells with anyone? (I am about halfway through the podcast so I hope Rob doesn't mention it somewhere after I post this, heh).

#podsquad with the amount of skyrim you have played Rob I am very surprised you do not know what malachite looks like, considering the amount of times you must have looted it! 😂
