I was at that concert. I was 25 yrs. old. A huge steel drum band opened for Toots & the Maytals. I will never forget that show! I've seen Toots many times in the US and Jamaica. I've been to Jamaica 5 times, mostly in the late 70s & early 80s. Toots will always be my Reggae Man. I love him so much. Last time I saw him was in Marin County Fair about 10 or more yrs. ago. He sang "Reggae Got Soul" and everyone just went wild. There were a lot of fans there like me who followed his career since this first concert (I think) in San Francisco. They had their kids with them and everyone knew all the lyrics. RIP Toots; you brought so much love into our lives. If anyone out there is feeling sad, listen to Toots sing "Spiritual Healing."

He really is the best soul singer, by far. It's not about reggae or any genre, he's above all this, he's a real gift to the world, and will never get enough recognition.

It seems Toots evolved from Sam Cooke and then Otis Redding.
      There has been no other.
God I love Toots to bits.

This is fantastic - what soul - funkiest Reggae star ever - this vid displays that.
I still get a lump in my throat when I think this lovely funky, soulful man is no longer with us. Had the privilege of seeing him about 7 times - never disappointed - always joyful crowd hysteria. - RIP lovely gifted genius - x

Had the honour of opening for Toots a few times over the years (like a lot of musicians since he toured for so many years). And it's amazing to go back and watch this footage and see he still did some of the same things so many years later.. and the crowd still loved it !

I was at this show when I was 17 and on acid. Toots and the Maytals were opening for Santana and the crowd (including me) were just chilling and waiting for Santana. I remember Toots really trying to get people moving. Great to see that this video was recorded for all time & for future generations to see.

Toots with or without the Maytals gave some of the best performances of anyone, at least that I ever saw. I saw him 5 times, once without the Maytals. The man could play the guitar! I can't praise Toots and the Maytals enough nor express my gratitude for their music that I first heard at 17 and never stopped loving

Toots and the Maytals ! What a wonderful performance with great energy. Watching him reminds me of an Ivorian artists who passed away in the 80's, Enersto Djedje(rip). The clothing the dance steps...and this makes me think Toots inspired him!
Rest in peace Toots and thx for sharing.

Always Loved Toots growing up. I’m so blessed to not only have the privileged to listen to his 2008 record (true love) on cd, but I also am grateful to be the few who admired his style Toots’s known style in my area. I’ve lived only 28 years of this life now, and I only met 3 people in passing that know the legend, and only one of them knowing how much of a legend Toots really was. This of it this way Bob Marley is the man and the very known legend, meanwhile Toots Hibbert was the Man, the myth, and the rarest known gift that ever came to reggaes genre. Especially when you go as far as the United States. Rest, but stay sound Toots. You earned it.❤🎉

I never thought about that until I woke up this morning,(2021.07.22) with a beat in my head and I had to listen to almost every famous reggae singer today to find the song and the lyrics and what you know it was Toots song "I KNOW WE CAN MAKE IT" When I read the lyrics, I understood the message. GOD IS THE GREATEST AND HE SPEAKS TO ALL THAT SEEKS HIM WITH ALL THEIR HEART:-) Verse 1 I know we can make it if you don't break up our true love
Things will be better if we stick together all of our life
There is a fountain flowing with milk and honey for you
Life will be better, we can make it together, oh yes, we can! #AMEN!!

@@MrJeremyactor Yes..I lived in SF at the time..my first exposure to Reggae..went out and bought Funky Kingston album afterwards..BTW the video does not do Toots or the audience justice. While quiet at the beginning, Toots had them jamming by the end. Reggae was very new to the "scene" at this time...Played Funky Kingston on Amazon recently and realized it sounded very familiar...it was a while ago.... but the message has not changed..

I was at this show. Santana was the headliner (Borboletta tour? Can't remember). Toot's got a lot of airplay on the local SF station (KSAN) so I had some idea of what I was in for. This show tho' made me a fan for life.
    *
I wanted to comment specifically tho' on the people who were talking about the (dead?) audience. The cameras were/are really close. The people you are seeing are right at the front of the stage and were usually hemmed in by the people behind them - from one of the cameras - there were two - you can see a few more people (there was not a lot of room to move - spent a few nights there myself). Winterland was an ice arena (Ice Follies played there when my mom was a kid - 30's & 40's), so there was a lot of room on the floor, and there was an upper seated level. I was about 30-40 feet back and it was different there. The audio is off the board so you don't hear much of the crowd (unlike the "Frampton Comes Alive" LP - half of it recorded at Winterland - where they mic'd up the audience and mixed it in (and way up) so you got the "feeling" about what it was like to be there). Anyway...the fact that we have this show some 45 years later and that is sounds so good should be enough. Cheers!

    • @MaximusWolfe

It wasn’t a lousy song and that’s why Toots covered it.

"Country Roads" was the greatest song John Denver ever wrote, and to this day it is one of the most loved and most requested songs of all time. Toots sang the song about his beautiful homeland Jamaica. Instead of West Virginia, he sings West Jamaica. Because of that song I went to West Virginia (from my home on the West Coast of the US) to just see the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains and the Shenandoah River. "Country Roads" (original version) is very popular in Ireland, (the famous Irish Pubs) and everyone sings along.

Toots is the real root king. IMHO, the king of Reggae. I was exposed to reggae (or at the time: “Ray-gay”) around 1972 when my parents took me took Jamaica for summer family vacation. As the son of a musician, and a young drummer, I can only say... I was addicted. I’ll always love Toots. It is you.
